What is hard is easy again. This literal fire salamander shouldn't have any problems tackling the early game with its high Speed and Special Attack, even if its just a little weak on the defensive side. But this isn't exactly the early game, is it? And Fire types don't do too well around here. Still, that's what the rest of your team is for, so it's not really a factor. The generation shift hasn't done all too much for Charmander, but hasn't done much to stop it either. Fire is one of those not great, but not bad types, really, so it still works just fine. You'll be relying on Ember for an annoyingly long time, but you could also snag yourself Fire Punch if you've got the cash. From there, there's a number of TMs to use and be effective with: Iron Tail, Dragonbreath and Headbutt, of course. Eventually, you'll get Slash and Dragon Rage through level up, so there's plenty of moves to choose from. Bite and Belly Drum from breeding is also a good option and while Outrage and Rock Slide are also great moves, finding their parents is gonna have to wait a little while. Overall, Charmander still works perfectly well, maybe even better than last time due to the number of new moves available to it and general Fire buffs and lack of competition even this late on.
