Medium mode is still medium mode, so Squirtle hasn't changed much, nor needs to. It's a Water type, that enough is to make it good. While Ice Beam isn't on the table like last time, along with Body Slam, there's still the replacements of Ice Punch and Headbutt that do just fine. Otherwise, Water types are pretty useful from here on, especially now that Surf is available, while the other two Water HMs, Waterfall and Whirlpool, fall by the wayside. Sure, it's fairly focused on the defensive stats, but the typing and, indeed, the higher than average Special Attack say otherwise. It's also pretty slow, so any Electric and Grass attacks coming its way are gonna land before it can do anything back. Starting off, you've got Tackle and Water Gun, good good, but you'll never stray too far from the Water and Ice moves that will do you just fine for most of the game. Otherwise, Bite is a good option and Strength is the last piece of the puzzle. But what about Egg moves? Well, uh, Mist? Mirror Coat? Too defensive for this totally defensive Pokemon, so Confusion is the best you got. Still, that's not too baaaad? Ah whatever, you know what Squirtle does and it still does it fine enough, generation change or no.
