Part 12: Pirate Swag

In both senses of the word.

Last time, we crawled out of a dank sewer so we could watch the bad guys get away. But we completed our job with Moanna, which was enough to get Captain Frog's ship back, at least.

This dude's all starry-eyed about living through a pirate raid. Claims it was a good experience.

"Oh man we totally got pillaged so COOL"

Speaking of, Port Cordelia's Keparrow:
Blue Crystal (sell for a chunk of change)
Space Creature
Speed Berry
Mega Battery

Anyhow, back to Port Revelry.

Talking to the sailor at the dock gets us on board Moanna's ship, though she's not moving yet. This gives us a chance to poke around and talk to crew and passengers.

Talking to Moanna gets us the Sandwich recipe, which raises attack by 5% for a set amount of battles. It takes Eggs and Bread... and egg sandwiches are pretty awesome.

Also, while indoors anywhere on board a ship, the screen steadily sways back and forth for that authentic ocean effect. It's almost like I'm totally not holding a DS in my hands!

The non-crew passengers are mostly merchants and their children. That little girl is amazed at how big the ocean is, nevermind that she's probably lived her whole life in a port town.

A young couple, treating this as a cruise.

The cannons are purely for self-defense, or so the sailor claims. Maybe I just want to imagine Moanna saying something like:

An unsigned merchant ship? Not in my waters!

In other words, show no mercy?

The merchants have set up shop below deck. They've got items, weapons, and Guardians for sale, but none of it's new to us. There's an inn, too, with a save circle if we need it.

This girl responds differently to each frog.

Smells like curry...

Not surprising, since he's hogging all of it.

Why do you have a tail? You're weeeird.

Why're you green? That's weeeird.

Eek...! Wha-what is it...? Your face... it's scaring me...

I thought I heard a voice just now... did I imagine it?

This guy talks about the three types of Recipes. We already know and use Main Dishes and Curry, but there's a third category, Desserts. We've yet to find any Dessert recipes. They raise everyone's Blazing Rise gauges by set amounts depending on the recipe, but BR fills up fine on its own, really.

A hidden item sparkle reveals the Fresh Salad recipe! It buffs everyone's speed by 10% for a few battles.

Now that we've picked the ship clean, we can return to Port Revelry.

One autoroute later, and we're back in Drunkyville.

Since we last left him, Captain Frog has spliced the mainbrace. Many, many times.

VIDEO: Drowned Sorrows

Ye know? If ye take the gettin' outta "gettin' on board," then ye're just bored... GEDDIT?!

Wow... that pun was terrible, Captain...

My good Captain, you've completely and utterly lost me.

Arrr, Sergeant! Don't ye be callin' me Captain no more. A captain's the most important man on the ship, and his ship's what makes him one! There be no such thing as a captain without a ship! So I ain't even here no more!

Well, we just got that ship back from Miss Moanna!

What the... did ye really, Sergeant? Ye did that for me...?

It's give-and-take out on the open sea! Isn't that right, my good Captain?

That's me good ol' Sergeant! But how'd ye pull it off?

It was our reward for guarding Moanna when a pirate woman and her crew raided Port Cordelia.

...A pirate woman?

Hold on... was she wearin' a bracelet anythin' like this?

Indeed she was! That's exactly it.

I see. If it's her, then I know just where she be hidin'.

What say we go rub out some pirates, Sergeant?

Hmm... if Alea and that pirate woman are connected, we might find a clue leading to the next Legendary Armament.

Then we'd best sail out with the tide. But first, Sergeant...

I'd like ye to have this for gettin' me ship back.

Got the Telescope! Captain Frog was added to the Support list!

Alongside Oyuki, that makes two Supports we've earned so far.

That's proof of our brotherhood. I'm sure it'll be helpful to ye.

Gero! Our brotherhood, eh? Then I'll take good care of it, yes sir!

I'll take ye anywhere ye need to go on me ship, Sergeant! Those scurvy dogs be on their turf southeast o' here.

Yarrr, Sergeant! Let's set sail for a pirate clobberin'!

Captain Frog's Support attack, Bind Shot, fires a net out of a cannon to stop enemies from moving. Not bad, if you want yet another way to make monsters helpless to your combos.

Upon trying to leave, Captain Frog calls for us to wait.

He says he'll go on ahead and ready the ship, which is now accessible on the overworld just outside town.

The game supplies us with sailing controls--A to embark/disembark at a coast, Y to walk around the ship, and talk to Captain Frog to return to the world map.

Okay, platoon! Let's go crush some corsairs!

Before we leave, there's one more thing to do on Moanna's ship.

She has a little errand for us to run.

Take a parcel to the local bartender...

Deliver the goods, get the signed receipt...

And take it back to Moanna.

The job's worth 2,000 Gold. It seems like it'd be repeatable, but it's not. Just an easy 2k.

Anyways, we now have our own freely controllable ship, AND IT'S A PIRATE SHIP!

From here, we can go straight to the next plot point.

But we're on a pirate ship, so there's booty to be had.

Speaking of, here's this guy, admiring the captain from afar. He's got the stereotypical talks-super-girly Japanese speech patterns, and warns us not to get between him and his love.

So Keroro's not the only one with a gay teammate.

Captain Frog's flag. I heard a red flag means no quarter.

This pirate claims that, after using an Arte a certain number of times, its power goes up. The Artes system in Keroro RPG is pretty simple, so they won't upgrade to anything new like in other Tales games. All you can do is make them stronger. Some Artes are more powerful from the get-go, but we won't see those until later.

Lying on the table in the captain's cabin is a recipe for Borscht. It heals the party by 20%, and adds 5% to their BR. In the anime, borscht is Kururu's favorite dish next to curry, thanks to Koyasu's rampant ad-libbing.

Here's the rest of Captain Frog's cabin. Nothing else to loot, unfortunately.

This pirate jokingly warns us not to fall into the ocean again.

The captain's got cannons, too.

Ooh! Cannons!

Keroro runs off to look at the ones on the port side.

Impressive...! These are well maintained.

Corporal, you can tell just by looking?

Of course. See this luster? Even after constant use, it's still like new.

It does look really nice, but that's all I can see about it.

You expect less from the resident gun nut? Kuu-kukuku...

Co--Commander! Be careful with that!

Kuru...?

Mega particle cannon, align sighting! FIIIIIRE!

Meanwhile, the grown-ass sergeant is making pew-pew noises on the other side of the room.

Hey, that was pretty good, huh? I always wanted to try it out on a real ship!

Oh, oh! I also gotta do that one part!

Come on, port side! We need more firepower!

The screen shakes with a violent BOOM!

Ge... gero...?

Oy! Whadda ye think ye're doin', firin' a cannon without the captain's permission?!

Gero... I'm sorry...

Ye're lucky it fell into the sea this time, but ye better not do that again. If it'd hit the town, we'd be dancin' the hempen jig!

I... I swear I won't do it again!

The grog with food coloring over here hides a Panacea, which heals status ailments on one ally.

This swab's not slacking--he's just on his break. Always.

This pirate tells us how he came to be in Captain Frog's crew. He snuck on board one day to steal the treasure (like we're doing pretty openly), and got caught. Just when he thought he was gonna get keelhauled, Captain Frog said, "Ye got guts! Join me crew!" And that was that.

A barrel with no item sparkle, and not a pixel different from other barrels on this ship.

Except for the A button prompt.

Quiet, everyone. There is a strange presence here.

An enemy!?

...Come out!

What were you doing in there?

W-wait, please...! I swear I'm not anyone suspicious!

Gero... you look plenty suspicious to me, buddy.

Hiding in barrels isn't what I'd call "normal."

So why were you in there, anyway?

Depending on your answer, we may have to report you to the captain.

Oh please no, anything but that! I went through so much just to get this far. If you give me away, I'll be...!

It seems things are more complicated than they look. Would you care to explain?

O--okay... ever since I was little, it's been my dream to travel around the world. But I could never do it, so I gave up and just kept living out my life.

Sad, but realistic.

Then one day I thought, "Am I really okay with this?" And I just couldn't stand it any longer, so left home right then. But I didn't have a boat, or any money to get started on my adventure. I was wondering what to do when I happened to see this ship.

And that's when you decided to sneak on board.

Yeah. I thought I'd found a good hiding place, but...

You were found by us, and now here we are.

Guys, could you please not tell anyone else I'm here? Next time this ship drops anchor in town, I promise I'll get off! So please, I'm begging you!

We can choose to stay quiet about the whole thing, or inform the captain of a giant rat eating all the hardtack.

Tell the captain
Don't tell

But Captain Frog saved the platoon from desiccating salt death, and it's his ship, so he has a right to know.

...I see. I guess there's no fighting it, then... so much for the adventure...

Then I'll inform the captain of your situation.

Oho, so here's our stowaway.

Er... um... I'm sorry! I shouldn't have snuck on board...

Belay that talk. Ye wanted to go on an adventure, didn't ye?

Ah... y-yes...!

Then I'll allow ye to stay on board. Make yerself at home!

Now ye probably know this, but ye'll be earnin' yer keep on this ship. Understand?

That's fine with me! I'm just happy I get to stay!

Listen up, me hearties! From now on, he's one of us! So treat him like he was yer own brother!

Aye aye!

Whew! Things looked dicey for a minute there, but it turned out all right.

Now this young man is free to follow his dream.

And he's taken his first big step towards it, thanks to the platoon.

Since our honesty turned out better than he expected, the new crew member rewards us with a Long Sword.

It drops Keroro's attack a little compared to the Vatras Sword, but increases defense and, more importantly, CC. At 13, Keroro edges out Dororo for Chain Capacity supremacy.

Artes/Skills learned this update:

Keroro
Bright Noa: Keroro pretends to be one of his favorite Gundam characters. Costs 1 cannonball; adds the Totally In Trouble status effect.

Next time, adventure on the high seas!
