Final Fantasy Barry - Part 1

Our first flash game will be Final Fantasy Barry. This guy is our protagonist.

All the music for this game is FF7 MIDI files.

Anyway, we start off next to a house riding a bike.

The house acts as an inn, letting you spend magic points to heal to max HP. You can also increase stats this way. Resting is 6MP, Boosting HP is 12, and boosting Strength or Magic is 24.

Clicking on your character shows your current status. You'll gain a lot of everything as you win battles.

Random encounters are common as hell, with three different enemies who will attack. First is this guy.

Limit only activates when Barry's at low health.

Draw lets you spend a round drawing either your Uzis or your Assault Rifle.

Combat is turn-based. You act, your opponent acts. As you can see, a shotgun blast to the face does 7 damage to you. At least this game is authentic to the Final Fantasy experience.

With guns out, you can shoot. Shooting costs ammo and doesn't really get more powerful as you level up.

It's really nice early on, though, as it does a good amount of damage and will help you get through battles painlessly.

Each opponent has two attacks they'll use. This guy's second one is to smack us with the butt of his shotgun.

Finally, here's Barry's regular attack. His slappy jump kick will become more powerful as attack goes up.

Magic lets you spend 6MP to cast a Fire, Ice, or Thunder spell for mediocre damage. Flee lets you run away, guaranteed, and is handy to avoid tedium later on.

After each battle, stats will go up. Magic points is set to be 12 for any random encounter, and attack and magic goes up a random number between around 4 and 7. HP increases at a flat 20% of your maximum.

The problem is that random enemies level with you, and HP scales much more quickly than damage, so as you go on random encounters become much lengthier. However, story battles have a set difficulty, so you still need to actually grind to be able to beat those.

The trick is to boost stats at your house, which enemies won't scale with. Of course, even then all that means is that you won't die during a battle. It's still a tedious slog to go through these battles.

The second opponent is a ninja.

His first attack involves him planting an explosive on your head, blowing it up to give you a minor headache.

The assault rifle sucks, by the way.

The ninja's second attack is a kick-flip, which is much more logical an attack.

Not as logical as a jump-kick, of course!

After your HP is low enough, Limit is unlocked. You can pretty much spam it as much as you want at that point.

It does a decent bit more damage, though you still want to avoid getting your HP too low since you can't recover it outside of battle.

The third opponent is a mage.

Other than that, same strategy of kicking him in the nuts.

Northwest of the house, there's our first "dungeon" of four.

Let's check out the dialogue for this game.

Hell no! We're going in!

Maybe you don't know who I am... I will be walking through this door, whether you are in the way or not.

The solider's pretty simple since he does crap damage.

Nothing to write home about.

Hmm - that was harder than I expected. I would't expect any less from The Colonel's thugs.

Any misspellings or poor grammar is from the game itself, as you may expect.

The security key card lets us in, while more MP lets us upgrade more stuff and cast magic.

In here is a wizard just lounging around.

Excuse me young man - I'm a wizard from the last free settlement, Madjaa, have you heard of it?

Heard of it? That's what I'm trying to save! How did you get here anyway?

Teleportation. I too am trying to save Madjaa, but I am too week to use my powers nowadays!

I jacked this from the guard you just wasted in the corridoor! But it appears that it's out of bullets. I sense that you are now a warrior with great powers. I would be happy exchange magic with you for ammunition.

Now you can trade all your ammo for MP. It's worth doing since more MP = more magic and stats, and guns are now paling to attack damage.

Well, that's over with. Let's do the boss of this area!

what

Aah, I see you made it past the front door... I'm surprised you could find the handle!

Sorry, but if you don't mind me asking... who the hell are you?

I see we're well past the small-talk stage. Considering you won't be needing any more information shortly, you may just call me Colonel.

Maybe you don't see the two Semi-Automatic Uzi's I'm idly playing with... or maybe you just love lead.

Hmm... let's see how effective those are against my battle-enhanced killing machine! And I don't mean my abdominals!

Our first boss battle is a robot.

As always, kicking it in the crotch is advised.

Its first attack is a boring laser-eye thing.

I haven't talked about magic yet because it costs 6 MP per spell. You know, the same MP that we use to heal and increase stats.

This guy can only get hit by Thunder, so let's show that off.

Not too shabby.

Speaking of thunder, this is the robot's other attack. Yes, it's incredibly ridiculous.

Kicking and slapping our way to victory.

If The Colonal was able to make something as technologically-superior as this as a basic guard, I dread to think what lays in store at the advanced missile depot. Then again... I only have to look around at the shreds of metal to see what a threat this 'machine' posed

Also, more MP!

I hate to admit it, but you have way surpassed my expectations of your achievement... Still, there is no stopping the eradication of the last free town. You will never destroy the one with the truest power.

All those innocent people are going to die by your hand. Does that make you feel proud?

You don't understand what power you are dealing with. You are a strong warrior but that isn't enough...

OH GOD

I am acting only on orders I have been given by he who is your real enemy. I pledge my allegiance neither to you, nor him. I only hope that you can actually stop those missiles for the sake of the innocent.

Okay, I have the first keycard. Now all I need to do is find the underground passage to the East of here to pick up the second, and then I'll make them pay. Unless I die. Could go either way I guess

Oh, Barry!

Next time, we'll tackle the rest of the game!
