Scenario 9
The Empire Doesn't
Massacre a Village

--------------------------

Throughout history, Langrisser has lent its wielder infinite power. But having been lost for hundreds of years, it has faded into legend. The company knew if it could claim the Might of Elthlead for the Empire, their dreams of peace could finally be realised. However, the Descendants of Light were already plotting to mobilise and thwart the Empire's plans. As the company marched to a nearby village, the princess of Kalxath, Cherie, waited with a detachment of the Army of Light to stop them.

So, thanks to our misadventures under a bridge we now have two sweet new items - Odin's Buckler & the Assault Suit. Have a gander at their sweetness, won't you?

However, since we have no summoners and I have no need to pump up someone's stats up... yet. So, they'll remain in our pile of unused stuff and now, we can move onto our actual equipment changes - more swift boots and bling for Octavian. War bling. Swag, if you prefer.

So, say hello to Swag-tavian.

Now after a hard day of looting superhero hideouts, Octavian continues on his journey towards the ruins of Castle Baldea in search of Langrisser. But Cherie awaits us and it'd be impolite of Swag-tavian to keep the ladies waiting. Let's take a look at the map:

We'll be utilizing that bridge as a choke point for a phalanx wall & ranged fire tactic on the main front, whilst Octavian will attempt to ford the river and flank the enemy from the south. Hein & Imelda will hold off the aerial and naval units in the north with spells and arrows. As you can see below, it's a bit more complex then some of the previous maps.

That is all, our tactics are sound, our minds clear. For Pax Rayguardia! We march!

This town will soon become a battlefield. Please leave as soon as possible.

What about you, Princess Cherie? Aren't you coming?

I must remain and fend off the Empire. We can't let them get Langrisser. Forgive me, everyone...
I didn't want the war to come here, but...

Princess...

If you don't leave you'll be caught in the melee! Everyone, please hurry!

I'll handle the protection of the villagers, Princess!

New colour for this generic mugshot - surprisingly, the Descendants of Light have a black-armoured generic commander.

Princess, we've spotted the enemy!

All right! Everyone get into position and prepare for the ambush!

The civilians are still evacuating. What should we do, Octavian?

What a royal pain in the ass. I saw we just take out the civilians as well. (CC:103)

I will have none of that talk. Our aim is to forever rid this world of bloodshed.
The killing of innocents goes against His Majesty's wishes.

Exactly. We can't let our troops harm the civilians.

So you've come, Octavian!
Even though you may be a Descendant of Light, I won't give up Langrisser to you!

We will see about that! Let's go, Cherie!

By that, he means Rohga should move out and form a solid wall of spear and shield.

You're in the way! Move it! Level up!

And that's all for combat this turn, but we've manevuered into position that'll hopefully pay dividends next turn. I do worry I've overextended Leon & Octavian but this remains to be seen. Here's how our forces are lined up at the end of the turn:

See what I mean? Octavian is in danger from those Elves, but if I fail - so be it. Swag-tavian is bling enough to take it.

I'm really sorry. To chase you out of your homes like this...

Oh, no. We are happy to do as you request, Princess.
But isn't it possible that we might be killed while escaping?

It's all right. If Octavian is here, he'll make sure no one lays a finger on you.
The Empire may be an enemy, but marauders they are not. Their aim is peace, much like ours is. Now, hurry and get out of here!

The Empire is no band of marauders except for maybe Baldo, Morgan, Imelda, those Assassins from the defend the Temple of Light mission, Morgan again, Aniki, Imelda again but otherwise, we're all for peace!

Very well.

I entrust you with escorting the villagers out safely! Take care that they don't get caught up in the battle!

Understood! Don't let the enemy through!

Despite the situation, this town's layout is perfect for an ambush.

Fighting in the streets will restrict our movement. Be careful when moving your subordinates.

You're right. We should take extra care concerning the cavalry.

What about the Serpent Knights?

If we engage water units on land, we should be okay, wouldn't you think?

Yes, we should be.

We took some minor damage and so, now's the time to strike. We begin with Octavian hitting up the footmen in the south. Rohga assists in the middle.

Woah!

Level up! AT+1, Class Change!

Now for Leon to shoot down the rest of our foes, except the Phalanxes who are way too defensive - we'll need Rohga to wall them up and then focus them down.

No...

Level up! DF+1

Hein & Imelda combine for some rather unimpressive damage. Dang it guys, I want you to obliterate them not char them slightly! Maybe some arrows in the face will help out?

If you mess with us, you'll get hurt!

Hein takes out one more Fairy and we reach the end of Turn 2. We're in some danger and could potentially lose Leon, but hopefully not. Here's our current situation in the north and northwest fronts.

We're saved. Princess Cherie, please be safe!

There's no need to worry! Take care.

Thank you very much.

Whew, that group has been safely evacuated. There should still be another group of villagers near here...

Heh, how futile...

Aim for the enemy's weak point and attack at once! Now, go!

I wonder if you can even come close to beating me.

7 damage to a commander, oh Hein, you gorgeous destruction boy, you!

Im, impossible...

Not... yet...

Level up! AT+1, DF+1, MP+1, Class Change!

General has the better aura, better DF, lower AT, MP & MV. However, we're going canon Light path Rohga, so say hello to Ranger Rohga! Unfortunately, since it's CR is 0 we now have a bunch of unsupported Phalanxes who'll need to be retreated next turn. Now it's up to Octavian to swoop in and save the day before Rohga loses a bunch of men.

And that's all for Turn 3, the aerial forces are ripe for Imelda to finish off and the majority of the enemy's initial forces are defeated and whilst there's one unit holding back with those civvies, the naval unit & Cherie. Should be alright though.

So we lose one Phalanx as predicted and now we move onto wrapping up this map.

Is, is this the end...?

Time for Hein & Imelda to wrap up on their end.

Ugh! To die in such... a... place-!

So, that's all the initial forces destroyed and all that remains is , and . Turn 4 is done and Cherie's forces do jack all. Time for Leon to hunt us up some seafood.

Level up! AT+1

So, that is nearly dead. Turn 5 is done.

Whew! We're praying for your victory, Princess!

Thank you. I'll do my best!

Farewell, Princess Cherie. Please, don't die on us...

That's the last of them... All the civilians have been safely evacuated.

Mission complete. Now we're off to join the battle!

Okay! But don't go overboard!

Understood!

Gaahh!

Ugh, very good...

Level up! AT+1, DF+1, MP+1

I believe there's one secret tile in between those 4 wooden posts anyway, all that remains is Cherie and that'll be that for this one.

It seems as if I'm all alone, doesn't it?
For once in my life, I wish I'd paid attention to all those boring old strategy books.
But I guess I'll just make do. I'll try my hardest from here on out!

General Vargas? Well, if you look closely, the situation is more troublesome than we had anticipated.

General Vargas, shouldn't you be with Lady Eliza? The birth of your child is a very important time.

If I left fellow officers in this mess, I wouldn't be fit to look my newborn child in the eyes!
Hmph, I guess I'll just have to rescue you, then! Gah hah hah! Here I come, girlie...

General Vargas...

Hey, you little punks! I've heard the news, from now on let's be friends!

Hmmm... such strong allies. Finally a group worthy of my strength.

He sure has a heart for battle, don't you think?

When we select Vargas...

Let me see how serious you are! Level up! Class Change!

So, here's Vargas - he's not great yet but that will change in time. You may be surprised by my choice for him to become an Assassin - there is a very good reason. In the Imperial path we do not get access to any naval commanders aside from Vargas. He also gets access to a new naval unit that I want to show off. Leon moves up to that secret tile.

I will bestow upon you wonderful power. What would you request of me?
`Increase AT & DF, Increase MP, Increase Magic Resistance
AT & DF raised by 1 point!

Now to finish this.

Put down your sword, Cherie! I don't want to hurt you!

That's my line! If you surrender now, I'll forgive you!

I have no choice... Here I come, Cherie!

Ooh... Any more and I'm toast. No choice but to flee.

Level up! AT+1

That should be the end of it. So why aren't we off to chase the enemy, already?

Vargas, your help today was much appreciated. Please return to Lady Eliza quickly, for her sake.

That's right. Too much anxiety can be hard on a woman, particularly considering what she's going through.

Heh, seems you won't accept my help under these circumstances, eh?

There's no need to worry. This is for a glorious child of the Empire.

Guys, I'm sorry. Once the child is born, I'll rush back to fight with you. Until then, stay safe.

It's over...

Colonel Laird has discovered Castle Baldea!

I see. So he found it... Good work.

Castle Baldea? Finally, we'll get our hands on Langrisser.

Onward! I'll trust you in leading the way!

Yes, Sir!

I really like that the majority of the post-mission scene is the Empire show, with power trio Vargas, Imelda & Leon discussing his upcoming child whilst Octavian & co. just sorta sit on the sidelines. Heck, I don't know but this might also be the first time that Octavian didn't have the last word before heading into the Spoils of War screen.

Next time, let's go facestomp an old man! The boots of the Empire halt for no man - trampling will be imminent and utterly ruthless.
