Part 2 - Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy

Level 3 starts off inside a dark room. The further you go into the Dungeons of Doom, the more likely you will see dark rooms. After a certain point, every room will be a dark room, in which you will have hopefully found a light source by then.

Mostly because there are much scarier things to stumble upon in the darkness than hobgoblins after a certain point.

Sometimes, a tunnel may end abruptly with no way forward. However, if I take some time to search the walls...

A secret passegeway may be revealed!

Off in another dark room, I find my first wand/staff (represented by a /)! There is little difference between the two other than the charges they can have.

Uh oh, the first incredibly dangerous enemy: the rattlesnake (represented by an R)! The rattlesnake has a chance to drain strength when it attacks.

Fortunately, it's asleep right now. Unfortunately, monsters have a chance of waking up when you leave a room, which means I will have to deal with it in these cramped corners. My bow and arrows should do the trick.

Damn it.

Damn it!

Fuck! There goes my strength

I finally take it out, having lost three points of strength in the process. At least I leveled up and got seven HP from it!

I figure, with my strength drained and my hit points low, that it would be a good time to test out my potions to (hopefully) find a potion of restore strength or healing!

Nope, that's not it. That was definitely not it

That was a potion of hallicination, the second worst potion in the game. This randomizes the displayed character for all monsters and items for 850 turns. It's still not the worst potion in the game (blindness) because you can still see things at least. While this is affecting me, I will have to take things a bit more carefully.

I drop my spare potion of hallucination and continue drinking potions to try to restore my strength, and stumble upon a potion of confusion (with a unique message because I am tripping right now). Although it is a bad effect, it will be worth keeping these in the future to throw at enemies (confusing them) instead.

I also find a potion of haste, which is a shame to waste now, but whatever.

In the next room I stumble upon something that is sleeping; it's marked as a wraith (represented as a W, which can drain levels), but I know that they don't spawn this early.

Still, better safer than sorry. I back up and shoot it with arrows.

I also manage to find another wand!

It's been a while since I started the game, and I'm now starting to get hungry. However, since Hungry doesn't do anything to affect me, I'll wait for a bit to eat in order to get the full food value out of my food (since there is a cap on how full you can be).

I spot another potential rattlesnake(?), but this time I've got a range advantage!

Score! I killed the orc(?)!

My hunger state turned to Weak while I went to retrieve the arrow that missed, so now is a great time to eat food! Weak means that you are incredibly close to fainting, which is very bad if monsters are around.

On the next level, I explore around and find a maze! Mazes are good places to get monsters to lose track of you (as they don't have very good pathfinding). Since the stairs are here, I'll explore the rest of the level first.

By the way, if this were actually a dragon (even though the symbol is currently I for ice monster, with D for dragons), I would be dead. Don't fight dragons

I manage to find another gold wand. I might want to test one of them out soon to find out what it is. Preferably, however, after I stop hallucinating.

I also try to pick up what I thought was an item, but it turns out was the real stairs. Time to backtrack and figure out what the item I left behind was.

It turns out to only be some gold, though

Finding nothing, I start heading back to the stairs and run into what might be a kestral.

Wait, that's actually a kestral! Looks like the hallucination has worn off!

I dive down the stairs into the dark unknown...

NEXT TIME: Things start looking up!
