Part 3 - The Calm

Level 5 starts out dull (which is perfectly fine with me, by the way).

I stumble upon the mystical dungeon pizza. Hopefully it's the fabled Pandemoneum Pizza!
(The pizza is actually a custom food type that you can rename! The custom food only gives you about half the amount of nutrition compared to normal rations, so it's good to eat them up first to clear up your inventory.)

I hit level 5 killing another hobgoblin, getting six more max HP! At this rate, I should have a good buffer of HP by the time scary things start showing up.

I also get hungry again, so I eat my pizza a bit early. RIP pizza.

My first gift on Level 6 is another unidentified scroll. I might want to get around to figuring out what these are soon, as I'm beginning to reach dangerous territories.

For example, a zombie (represented by a Z). These guys are twice as healthy as hobgoblins, which means more chances for them to attack.

I stick with filling it full of arrows.

I end up exploring the entire level, and decide to ID my scrolls before moving onto Level 7, which is where the first major mid-game enemy shows up.

The first scroll I try turns out to be confusing touch. This makes your first successful melee attack against a monster confuse it (after which the scroll's effects go away), which can make it easier to fight.

The scroll doesn't auto-ID until after I confuse something, so I give it a name when it prompts for it.

My next scroll is one of identify potion! In this version of Rogue, there are seperate ID scrolls for each item type. Yes, this is absolutely terrible. If you at all have an interest in playing Rogue yourself, I recommend the Android version, which has some good quality of life improvements to make the game more tolerable (like reducing the likelihood of dark rooms and combining all the ID scrolls together).

Unfortunately, I already drank all my potions, so the scroll gets wasted

The next scroll is magic mapping, which is useful to know.

Finally, my last scroll is remove curse. Curses are binary in Rogue: if a piece of equipment is shit/became shit (through rusting) and is cursed, and are stuck wearing/wielding it. Otherwise, it's good to use. Remove curse lets you remove any cursed equipment that you were wearing at the time of reading the scroll, but does not remove the curse from the item (as in, if you put the shitty item back on, you get recursed). I had nothing cursed at the time, so nothing happens.

Level 7 marks the point where most people will die if they get lucky through the beginning, because it is the start of centaur spawns. Centaurs can do 3-12 damage, and are twice as healthy as zombies. If you don't have a good way of fighting things at this point (and most characters won't), the most you can do is run for the stairs and hope for the best.

I end up wasting my confusing touch on a zombie I stumble into in the darkness, but whatever.

I find another short bow, which is not worth the time or resources to bother even trying to figure out if it is better than my normal bow.

I also find a spear, which is strictly worse than the mace with no advantages. It's not even a good throwing weapon, since throwing bare arrows does the exact same damage, and arrows stack.

Hey, it's an actually useful weapon! There are only two non-magical upgrades to your starting mace (which does 3-9 damage including the enchantment): a long sword (3-12 damage) and a two handed sword (4-16).

I give it a quick wield/unwield to see if it is cursed. It isn't, so I stick to using it!

I give some more scrolls a read in the hopes of getting a weapon enchantment. The first one is an identify magic object scroll (rings, wands, and staves).

I identify my gold wands, which reveals them to be light. Not really that good other than revealing dark rooms in dangerous situations.

My next scroll is an identify scrolls scroll!

It was also my last scroll, unfortunately

Well, despite getting lucky on item IDing, things certainly seem to be going just fine!

NEXT TIME: Things very quickly stop being fine.
