This time around the regional bird is a bit different to the offerings last time around. While the story mode doesn't usually favour defensive Pokemon, it's also easy enough that you can experiment with whatever. So any Pokemon (with a few exceptions) are perfectly fine to use, so go ahead and choose bulky bird if that's what you want to do. It doesn't have anything very outstanding as far as attacking stats go, but it can take Special hits well enough. Which we won't exactly be encountering for a little while, but that's how the stats fall, really.
It has a few moves to get going, but then it quickly gets a few support options, so in order to get some kind of kick to your attacks, you'll need to use TMs. And you don't even get that much in the way of Flying moves, so of course you're relying on the Normal typing. And some Psychic moves, cause sure, why not. So it won't be pulling too much weight, but that does mean it'll be helping the rest of your team pull their weight.
