Hoo boy, welcome to the uphill battle that is choosing Chikorita as your starter. That doesn't mean it's necessarily bad, it just has a lot working against it, especially the early game. But firstly, you can tell what it'll be from the start, a Defensive tank. Which might not work all too well as a pure Grass type, but since its stats are fairly balanced, you won't have many problems from either side of the spectrum. So you can go both Physical and Special with very little problems and be able to take some hits too. Just not with too much power, since it does have its fair share of weaknesses. And it's definitely designed to be a support Pokemon, so its moveset is pretty lacking. But it learns what it needs to, though for a while you'll be relying on Razor Leaf and with mechanic changes means it won't crit very often anymore. Oh well.

To begin with, you'll have a lot of troubles with the various resistances you'll face, so team support will be very helpful, though you shouldn't have to worry about super effective hits coming your way. At least you'll start off with some very strong STAB very quickly, but there's a very large gap in the moveset while you learn not too much at all, it's a bit of a shame, definitely, though none of the moves you learn are bad exactly, they're just pretty spaced out. It's the same with TMs, you won't be getting much in the way of STAB, but hey, if you need a supportive tank, then this will do you swimmingly.
