Ahem, if you didn't opt for the fire starter, then hot damn (no pun intended), you've got a good choice. With pretty high Attack, Special Attack and Speed, you've got a pretty fast mixed attacker, which is great, especially since you can catch it so early. Though in Gold and Silver you'd be waiting a while longer. But regardless, you learn Ember pretty quickly and from there, so there you go, nice STAB, easy as that. But then it's a while before you get anything else, so TMs are again necessary. At least you're not in too much hurry to evolve your cute dog, since you don't miss out on many moves and it's not worth bringing around a fairly fragile doggy, cute as they may be. If you're able to, definitely pick it up, but there's only one cute fire animal for me right now.
