Chapter 27: Sun Vulture and the Split Personalities

Music: You Turn Me On

Let’s continue our excursion into the Big Empty by hunting for some of the appliance modules for our new home base, shall we?

After all, we’re really going to need them even after we do the brainiacs’ busy work.

Another one of those signs. Might as well see what’s so special about it.

Huh. Was expecting more gurneys and respirators and shit.

But I guess killer robots with too many doctorates is enough!

Each marked location has a personality holotape inside, the medical facility carrying the one for the Auto-Doc, naturally.

Though, there are also upgrades dotted around the crater for the appliances. Since the Auto-Doc is the first on the list (and a main priority for most players), it luckily has some of it’s additional features in the same building.

Um. Excuse me. There’s no door to the bathroom… why is the sign right behind this electrical equipment?

Even though I haven’t touched Fallout 4 for over a year, I will never stop scrounging for duct tape…

Ahahahaha I’m totally going to run into one of those zombie-suits around here, aren’t I?

In the next room over, we come across a Sterilizer Glove, which is an unarmed weapon that burns foes on each strike.

And wouldn’t you know it, the game spawned some Lobotomites for us to test this new Fire Punch on.

At last, I never have to cook my meals after killing them ever again!

The other interesting thing in this room is this recording found next to an empty jail cell.

Not going to make it through this, hope someone finds this message, gets it to the Brotherhood in the West.
Tracked a rogue Brotherhood Elder, Elijah, here, to the Big Empty.
Place is more than it seems, there's a crater hidden deep inside. Junkyard of pre-War labs scattered across the crater's surface, all still running... like this one.
Elijah's dissecting these centers, one by one... tracked him to an old Chinese-American internment camp. Survivors, ghouls, have bomb collars.
Robots moved in when I tried to intercept him... Elijah sent the camp ghouls against us both, like walking bombs.
Got hit by the explosions, woke up here. Guess the medical robots were programmed to bring wounded victims from the camp to this center.
Some kind of Auto-Doc prototype lab... manned by corpses trapped inside suits that keep them moving, no idea why.
Not sure how long I'm going to last... cut open my head like a lot of the humans I've seen here, feel strange, can talk, but can't hack the term-
...wait, an explosion outside. Someone's here... someone's...

Christine’s armor is found near the sunken Auto-Doc, along with a stealth boy.

It has a bit more DT than regular recon armor, but our armor is still better.

Since we have the holotape for the Auto-Doc, let’s plug it in!

I'd like to engage your services.
And rightly so, I should think. All right, then, let me just fire up the old interface for you.
Can you do anything beyond healing me?
Well, firstly I would say providing wholeness of the body is service enough, but if you must know, I'm also programmed with cosmetical subroutines.
Diagnostics says they're off-line at the moment, though. Something about corrupted data files and all manner of such foolishness.
If you want a haircut or a nose-job that won't leave you looking like a Ghoul with alopecia, you'll have to find replacement disks for them.
Also, and I won't swear to this, but I recollect at some point having a few implant installation modules. Can't speak to where they got to, though.

I'm feeling a little unwell in the head. Can you perform a psychiatric evaluation on me?
Concerned about the state of your mind, are ya? Well, such things ain't my specialty, but I'm happy to tender my opinion as to your mental health.
I should make you aware that the benefits of such a procedure are exclusive - that is, this only works once. Now are you sure this is what you want?
I'm ready, let's do it.
All right. Just try to relax, this won't hurt - unless your sense of self is especially vulnerable.

This is the other reason why I wanted to get to this DLC early. The Sink Auto-Doc can allow you to reset your starting traits, but only once. Now, remember that Logan’s Loophole trait I took at the beginning? Well, at level 21, I was going to stop leveling up (even though the Jsawyer mod reduces the level cap to 35, I still want some of those nice late-game perks). But now...

I can simply take it off and give myself another trait (or none at all). I take the Skilled trait, giving me +5 in each skill, but reducing the experience I receive by 10% overall. Seeing as how I’m almost level 19 and not even halfway through the game, it’s a nice trade-off.

Sure, I’ll be susceptible to chem addictions now and they won’t last as long, but now that I have multiple suppliers of drugs and the Sink Auto-Doc can cure my addiction for free, it’s no longer a problem. Hell, I have 30 Psycho on my character at all times!

There are also implants we can upload to the Auto-Doc. Let’s try this one out, shall we?

This one increases the amount of damage we do to any Cazador, for the small price of 8,000 caps. What a deal!

Hokay then.

Next stop: the bottom of these cliffs.

On our way down, however, we ran across a Lobotomite with this handy weapon, which is basically a less powerful Power Fist but with a faster attack speed. Since we can’t mod it, we just store it for later.

Oh crap, more of those plant things from Vault 22… Why do I have the feeling this is where they came from?

Yup. Figured. Shoulda known. These fuckers made Cazadors and Nightstalkers; why WOULDN’T they have also made Spore Monsters?

Patient Zero here drops some Thick Red Paste, which heals for a shitton. Or, at least, it says it does. In reality, it simply increases your max HP by 15 and heals for much less than what it describes. We can still craft it later on, though.

The holotape for the biological research station is found in this collapsed building.

As are some dried seeds on the second floor, as depicted by me standing right in front of where they normally spawn except my recording didn’t wanna turn on when I picked them up. Just trust me this one time, okay? Okay.

Oh looky here, overturned trucks with cages. This place just keeps getting better and better.

The next holotape is found in this facility right here, next to the botanical garden we found the bio-research holotape.

This is yet another Wild Wasteland area: Doctor Venture’s Walking Eye can be found here.

Besides that, all there is in this room are a bunch of energy weapon ammo and the Sink holotape...for the sink.

I have a skeevy feeling about this.

What did you just say?
Your seed, baby. I'm the original, certified, rarefied, testified GS-2000 Biological Research Station. Yes sir, I'm a seed-clonin' machine.
You got seeds? I'll clone the shit out of them.
My seed? I think you've got your biology mixed up.
Naw, baby, I'm all about biology. I'm the original, certified, rarefied, testified GS-2000 Biological Research Station. I'm a seed-clonin' machine.

What does that mean?
It's the miracle of life, baby. You bring me some succulent genetic samples, and I'll work my mojo on them. Clone you up all kinds of plants. Aw yeah.
I can also break them down for you, if you're into the kinky stuff. Bring me any old plant parts, and I'll grind them up into Salient Green for you.
Yeah, you like that, don't you baby?
What's Salient Green?
Just the miracle of life in sticky, gooey, liquid form, baby! Heat that gunk up over a campfire, and just watch it congeal into all kinds of plants.

So if I bring you samples of dried plant life, you can clone them and grow them in these planters?
You know it baby. I just need some samples and I got you going. Take a few days, but trust me - it's all kinds of good.
Ahem. Well then, in that case...
I command you to open your port and receive my seed!
Aw, yeah, baby, just slip it in there. All the way down in that dark, moist earth. Mmm... launching interface.

As the smooth-talking machine said, we can grow our own crops here! It takes a few in-game days, but at least we have a steady supply. All we need are the seeds, which we find in the Big Empty. We can also convert the veggies we have into Salient Green, which heals us for a decent amount.

Orrrr we could convert the Salient Green in Battle Brew!

Just gonna put this chip right in-
Oh God, look at you! You're... filthy. I suppose you'll... want to clean up then?
You seem kind of worried about dirt. What's wrong?
Ugh, it's just so... unsanitary! Do you know how many germs are in one cubic centimeter of dirt? Seventy... hundred... gajillion!
Would you want that getting washed down your gullet day in and day out? I didn't think so!
You know that not all germs are bad, right?
Oh don’t tell me you’re a… germ sympathizer!
I just came over to fill some of these empty bottles.
Oh, I'd love to, darling, but the circuits that allow me to dispense water into non-organic containers burned out years ago.
You'd have to find a replacement for that module.
Then I’ll be able to convert these empty bottles into Purified Water, right?
That IS what I was ultimately designed for, dear, yes.

With our health in good order, we carry on to the next two holotapes!

Back at the red-crystal cliffs, we come to this train tunnel. There is a lot of spare ammo and pulse grenades in the area below the turret back there, requiring the Force-Field gun.

Of course, the real prize is in the closet. That’s right: DUCT TAPE.

oh and the holotape too i guess whatever

I don’t know what’s more glaring: the X-2 sign or the weird red symbol on the door.

Axe-cuse me, y’all!

Buddy, my entire LIFE is a combat zone!

Holotape. Coffee maker. First floor.

While we are here, we might as well pick up the next item on that shopping list those floating aquariums gave us.

The neat thing about this item is that, since the devs figured the 15lb. weight would be too much for characters already hoarding all the loot on their travels, you don’t actually need to carry it back with you: it just gets uploaded to Dr. Klein. Nifty.

Oh boy, yet another weapon to test!

The antenna doubles as a melee weapon (which is ALSO strong against robots and power armor), with its own attack.

It’s… pretty much the same as the Proton Executioner. The proton axe deals more DPS, so we’re sticking with that.

A light switch should be acting normal… right?

What function do you serve?
Doctor Mobius and I were deeply involved in research on the ability of light levels to enhance human cognition.
What were the results?
We observed a fascinating phenomenon: certain spectra of visible light actually increased cognitive function and reasoning ability.
<flirtatious> Of course, Doctor Mobius' brain is so big already, we had a hard time measuring it.
Can you turn those lights on for me?
As much as I'd love to, I'm afraid not. The data from that study has gone missing. You'll have to find a backup if you want to use the Smart Lights.
Well, I guess I’ll see if I can turn on the other lights in the next room.
Oh, that’ll be way too easy for that skank.
...riiiiight.

What are you, some kind of novelty talking light switch?
I was Doctor Mobius'... personal assistant! We were studying... um... oh, shoot, what was it?
Oh yeah! Lightning! No, no, wait, uh... Lighting. That's right. How lighting affects human interaction.
And what did you find out?
Oh, it was super exciting! It turns out that some pretty colored lights can make you way better at talking to people!
Can you turn those lights on for me?
<poutatious> Oh... I'd love to, sweetie, but I don't have the programming. All the data from the experiments was lost.
You'd have to go out into that nasty old crater and find the backup copy.

I saw another light switch in the other room. Do you control that one too?
Oh... her. Trust me sweetie, you're better off not thinking about that frigid little ice queen.
Sounds like there's some bad blood between you. Or, um, circuits.

I’m just gonna… walk away.

Trying desperately not to think about half of her new appliances hitting on her, Sun prepares for her next day by feasting on some of the food paste she’s made.
