Video: Act 1 Scene 3, Paper Hearts

Thank you.

quote:

Pavisierres and Merobusto

Masquerada who practice Merobusto alone are called Pavisierres, and practice a type of dance that involves strong, bold, contained movements. The Pavisierres, among all the Masquerada, have the ability to brand the largest volume of their element at any one time and their abilities reflect this - Earthbrand Pavisierres have the ability to summon walls of earth; Airbrand Pavisierres can channel pounding blasts of wind.

With the raw strength and power of Merobusto comes a price, however - Pavisierres are almost never able to control their elements with precision: large, bold displays of their power are often all they can manage.

quote:

Sicarios and Medanza

The Sicarios are practitioners of Medanza, the Media that I personally believe to be the most beautiful to watch. It is a fluid dance, which involves tumbles and turns and flowing flips. It is elegant, but not clumsy, smooth but not inaccurate, and these descriptions are reflected in the abilities of the Sicarios, who wield their elements with the most precision and finesse of all the Masquerada - Firebrand Sicarios often wield whips of flames; Waterbrand Sicarios hurl icicles with almost preternatural precision.

This focus on finesse has cost the Sicarios in raw power, however. Few Sicarios will ever be able to take on a Pavisierre in a test of strength - either physical or magical - and so they must rely on their wits and cunning to make the most of their talents. A Sicario that positions themselves well on the battlefield, however, is truly a force to be reckoned with.

- See that ward over there? I know a fantastic Illisian steakhouse.
- I'd rather something sourer. What about the ward next to it? I know an amazing TeSerric noodle shop there.
- I'd rather visit the Lhistran bakery two wards north.
- Lhistran bread is too stale. What about that Zoric brewery Mia was walking about the other day?
- Ages, the options in this city...
- Well... We do have the Registry's cookhouse.
- I suppose. No food like free food, after all.

- I wonder what they must think of us, though.
- What do you mean?
- Standing here, looking down at them. We've literally been doing this for the entire day.

Don't be. You're here to find your brother, not deal with my demons.
If you ever need help-
A generous offer, but I knew what I was in for when I returned.
Then why did you?
Did you know Avestus promised me enough crescents to last a lifetime, if I came back?
So you're back for coin?
Come on. We should speak with Kairi. Hopefully she can tell us more about the fey.

We need to find out what Razitof was doing with the fey. If anyone could tell us more-
-it would be the head researcher of the Registry.

What is this?
A set of uniform. The Vaorone wishes for you to change into them, then meet him in the reception hall. We've a room for your privacy, just over there.
... Dismissed. Just a moment.
I'll be here.

Is it still a uniform if no two of them look alike?

Why?
Well- Forget it. Now come on, Avestus-
No.
I beg your pardon?
I will not forget it.
Mariner, you're being silly.
Listen, Cicero. I can see that this search for my brother has brought you to dark places.
I hope you know I'm not doing this for you.
I never thought you were, but I'd like to aid you where I can.
Ah, we're on the same page, then. You can start by not asking so many questions. Now, hurry along-
Why do you hate it?
Please, Mariner-
It's just a question.
Because this symbolises everything about me that my brother would disapprove of. And I am wearing it. Satisfied?
Quite.
You'd better be. Now come along.

I think you look very smart, dear.

quote:

An Inspettore's Cape

The cape of an Inspettore is their signature. Only seven in the Citte bear such capes, and they are not easy to come by. The cape is woven from TeSerric silk, coloured with Illisian dye, stitched with Zoric thread, stuffed with Rhunic wool and worn by Ombrian flesh; it is a symbol of the responsibilities of the Inspettoores - to care for the Citte and its people, no matter where they come from.

The truth of the matter, however, is that the Inspettores are agents of the Registry, and hold to the orders of the Vaorone at the tip of the White Spire with utmost obedience, even if those orders come at the expense of those beyond the Registry.

quote:

Kalden Azrus

The Mariner seems to believe he can somehow help me. What does he think himself to be, a counsellor of some sort? I don't want to encourage this behaviour - my past is past and bringing it up is bound to do no one good. I don't plan on allowing him to continue with this prodding, but I'm foreseeing that I might have a difficult time telling him off.

He seems genuine and sincere about his efforts, though, as much as I'd rather he wouldn't.

In that respect I suppose he does remind me of Razitof.

quote:

Tristan Delzole

I should not be upset about what Tristan did - I've known him for so long, I know where his allegiances lie - yet, how little sway reason has over the heart. I am hurt by his actions, despite understanding them, though I suppose I should be glad for them. It is a reminder that even the best parts of the Citte, the parts that you hold close to your heart, have the capacity to hurt you. It reminds me of the mercenary days that I spent out on the streets, with guarded heart and selfish mind.

I wonder if I'd been wiser, then.

- I wonder if-
- I wonder what-
- 'Wondering' isn't going to find you any answers. Get back to your books.
-- Yes, sir.

- I want to be an Inspettore someday.
- To go on dangerous missions?
- Diplomatic ones, to travel! Imagine, seeing the shores of Zor, or the mountains of Illisia, all at the expense of the Spire. *Sigh*

- I heard that the Quiet Order's situation was resolved because of Gavar.
- He's living up to his reputation, it seems.

- You intend on provoking these Red Scarves, then?
- My dearest, where is the fun in that? We belong to the city of masks. It is time to put some on.
- You plan on manufacturing conflict?
- You speak as if there is any other kind.
These two are sure taking their sweet time with this conversation, aren't they?

So many Portieri. Makes me uncomfortable.

And the Registry is ever so grateful.

Judgemaster. Vaorone. I apologise if I've interrupted something.
Not at all, Inspettore. In fact I was hoping to see you personally to deliver the news.
Should I be frightened?
Inspettore, meet Tiziana de Felici, one of my finest Marshals. The moment I heard that you'd returned, I understood that the White Spire must have been on hot coals.
And the Judgemaster was ever so generous to lend the Luca's strength to our cause.
In what fashion?
The Marshal will be assisting us in the investigation.
You've told her about it?
Of course. For the sake of our kin, we must set aside our differences, Cicero. But my words are wasted. I can see you already understand.
So the Sorelle is part of the investigation as well?
I'm just here to-
As Razitof's brother, of course. As I said, finding him is reason enough to overlook the schism between the Seimora and the Registry.
That is good to hear. I will admit that I am pleased - surprised, but pleased, that the pride many scorn the Registry for having has not clouded your judgment.
And I say gratefully the same, that the fallacious arrogance of the Luca hasn't stopped you from stooping to assist us.
Well, if that is all, I'd like a final word with my Marshal before she joins you.
Take as much time as you need.

quote:

Faveo Fedelta

There are some men that are satisfied with the status quo, that are content with their places in society, who find enough joy in simply surviving in this city.

And then there are men like Faveo - visionaries who have a dream for their people, who are willing to sacrifice for the sake of progress, who have the ability to set their sights on more than just getting by.

Throughout my career as an Inspettore, I haven't often been required to interact with the leader of the Luca Infinita, but all the times that I have, I have been nothing short of impressed with his efficiency, his determination, his focus.

And now, as he comes into the picture once again, I am reminded that he is in possession of so much more than just a powerful will; he is a man of cunning and wit, who will stop at little to do what he believes is best for his people, for his guild.

All I can hope for as I continue the investigation is that I manage to stay out of his way. From the way things are progressing, however, that does not seem very likely.

Cunning bastard.

How best to spy on us, I'm sure.
You think he's... Did Faveo tell the Crown about this meeting?
And share the opportunity to get the upper hand? I doubt it.
Then he's cornered you, hasn't he? If you turn down his offer for help, he'll have a reason to bring it up to the Crown.
Citing my dissidence as reason for suspicion that I'm hiding something.
They'll conduct an investigation-
-and they'll find out about Razitof and what he's working on.
Just what you want to avoid.
And if I do accept his help-
-then he'll have a spy among your ranks. But given the choice between one rat from the Luca or the attention of the Crown...
He knows that I will not act against him.
Unbelievable. Any plans on dealing with this?
Other than keeping her out of the loop as much as possible? Perhaps an accident-
Lay a finger on her and a dozen more of the Golden Guild will be nipping at our heels, you know that.
Hmph. I've always wondered how different things might have been if I'd made you a Regenti.
I may hate the beat of the Citte's politics, but it doesn't mean that I don't know how to dance to it.
Really?

The Mariner is hiding something and it might be connected to his brother's disappearance. You brought me back to do a job. Let me do it.

That would be now. We're on the way to meet the head Vegilus. Marshal, shall we?

Whoa there, chatty cathy, give me a minute to catch up here.

A walk sounds magnificent, Vaorone, thank you.

quote:

Tiziana de Felici

And now we have a spy amidst our ranks. Perfect.

There is nothing I hold against this woman personally - to be perfectly honest she is simply performing her duty - but that does not mean she is any more welcome in this investigation. Getting rid of her does not seem to be a viable avenue for dealing with her presence; perhaps I should start with learning how much she knows.

quote:

Luca Infinita

The Luca Infinita, or the Golden Guild, is a source of ire for many in the Citte. Their strict laws and martial influence are often deemed suffocating, and where once the men and women in gold were respected, now they are treated with annoyance and even fear.

- My only question is why they didn't put the lady Inspettore on the job. Why'd they have to bring Gavar back, of all people?
- I heard she had better things to do.
- So what, they have a choice, now, eh? Picking and choosing jobs as they like?
- All I'm saying is you don't know what runs in the upper rings of the Spire.
- Hmph. Probably for the best.

- What I mean to say is, yes, he might be skilled in the Media, but...
- You're worried about his history.
- I mean he sided with his brother; that's essentially a betrayal, isn't it? And then now he's been welcomed back? I just don't understand.

- It seems that Gavar is gaining popularity.

- Strange mix of colours he travels with, though.

So, Marshal, how much of the case have you been briefed about, exactly?
Enough.
You have no questions that you'd like answered?
Inspettore, if you're attempting to goad out of me the extent of my knowledge about the case so that you can use it against me, I suggest you try a different tactic.
Ouch.

- I've tried it already!
- Everything?
- Everything!
- Including adding three drops of Almaic acid and waiting seven minutes and thirty-hour seconds before diluting the solution with foxglove extract?
- ... Perhaps not everything...

I do not dance the dance of politics, so I will be straightforward with you - yes. You being called back is a sign that secrets are being stirred. I know you are keeping something from me, as the Registry is keeping something from my guild, and I am here to find out what. Is that straight enough for you, Inspettore?
Surprisingly so.
So you're here to spy on us?
You've never dipped your fingers in the pool of politics, have you?
Too bloody for my tastes.
Well, the Inspettore knows what's going on as well as I do, and that's all that matters. Now, if we're done wasting time?

First they force a new partner on me, and now the goddamn Agency's breathing down my neck

Our new recruit shares Kalden's Pavisierre fighting style, but the similarities end there. Tiziana's Firebrand skills are all about burning anyone who gets too close; even her single defensive skill comes with a damage field and optional spread attack.

Since we have two scrappers, I'll rebuild Cicero for some extra ranged damage.

Stoic
Increases damage by 10% when there are no allies within 4 metres.

Void (Mask Charge Cost: 35, Cooldown: 10 seconds)
Conjures a forcefield that sucks in enemies within 6 metres for 1 second.
Positive Charge
Before the forcefield dissipates, lightning strikes its core to deal 10 damage. Enemies dealt damage this way receive an Air Tag.

Evensong (Mask Charge Cost: 25, Cooldown: 10 seconds)
Conjures a pool of mud at the target location. All enemies within 5 metres move and turn 20% slower and take 5 damage per second for 5 seconds.
Inspiring Anthem
Allies in the mud gain 25% more attack and cast speed.
Echoing Wail
Increases radius by 3.
Magnum Opus
Enemies in the mud pool become Rooted for 5 seconds.

Ice Spikes (Mask Charge Cost: 35, Cooldown: 10 seconds)
Conjures ice spikes that erupt from the ground, dealing 40 base damage to enemies in its path.
Nova
Upon expiring, the ice shatters and all enemies within 2 metres take 30 damage.
Exigence
Increases damage by 30.

For Kalden, I've swapped out Hopespring and Redoubt.

Pavisierre+
Increases damage reduction by 10%.
Soul+
Increases maximum Focus by 50.

Atmos Ring (Mask Charge Cost: 40, Cooldown: 15 seconds)
Conjures 2 spheres of water that rotate around the caster for 7 seconds, raising their Threat. Whenever a sphere passes through an ally, that ally heals for 5% of their maximum Health. Sphere expires after 5 heals.
Discharge
Whenever a sphere expires, it bursts and deals 30 damage to enemies within 3 metres.
Atmos Ring+
Increases sphere speed by 50% and duration by 3 seconds. Each sphere can heal allies 3 more times before expiring.

Ward of Protection
Increases aura radius by 3 metres and nearby allies gain 10% damage reduction.

And as for Tiziana herself:

Pavisierre
Increases damage reduction by 10% and Threat generation by 20%.
Soul
Increases attack speed by 30%.
Pavisierre+
Increases damage reduction by 10%.

Pommelstrike (Mask Charge Cost: 0, Cooldown: 8 seconds)
Tiziana strikes an enemy with fire for 15 base damage and activates Elemental Tags.
Taunt
Whenever an Elemental Tag is activated, the target is forced to attack Tiziana for 3 seconds.

Blazing Bulwark (Mask Charge Cost: 25, Cooldown: 15 seconds)
Tizian conjures 5 flaming shields in an arc for 5 seconds that destroy incoming projectiles. Enemies between her and the shields suffer 5 burn damage per second.
Avenger
Launches a set of shields outwards that deal 40 damage to enemies.
Bulwark Master
Increases casting arc by 20% and the maximum number of shields by 1.

Judgement (Mask Charge Cost: 30, Cooldown: 10 seconds)
Tiziana launches a fan of 6 flaming bolts in a single direction, dealing 10 base damage per bolt to all enemies within 12 metres.
Extended Strike
Increases bolt range by 25%.
Sweeping Strike
Increases casting arc by 33%, bolt damage by 8 and the maximum number of bolts by 2.

Sanction (Mask Charge Cost: 40, Cooldown, 15 seconds)
Tiziana unleashes fire waves at the target location that deal 30 base damage per wave and Taunt all enemies within the arc.
Firebrand
Enemies receive a Fire Tag.

-The Conoscenza-

Never thought I'd ever see the insides of this place. The Registry's always so stiff about sharing.
Just remember, we're here for Kairi, not for sightseeing.
Of course. Lead on.

quote:

The Conoscenza

Home to the Citte's second-largest collection of written histories, the Conoscenza is the pride of the Vegilus, and contains volume upon volume of information on topics that range from botany to Dimenticate history.

The silence is too deep, here. Usually there are-
Watch yourselves!
Get them!

-Mars de la Fey-

I messed this one up by setting Kal and Tiz's AI to not use their skills on a single target.

So they took forever hacking away at this one guy and got slowly chewed up in the process.

Fortunately Ice Spikes do ridiculous damage when they're upgraded this way.

-The Conoscenza-

It is customary for Portieri to stitch insignias of some sort... on the inner walls of their jackets. Personalize them. These have none, and they are poorly fitted. *sigh*

-Tiziana's Theme-

What is it?
Nothing, just a thought.
A thought?
Don't bother yourself with it.
"If I must bother someone else with it, then I choose..."
Inspettore, allow me to make something clear to you. There are two ways that this can go. The first: If you pay me with respect and honesty regarding the case, I will offer my full assistance, and as I have just demonstrated, I can be useful.
Do I want to hear the second?
If you attempt to blind me with lies and fabrications, I can make this investigation very difficult for you, as I have also just proven.
Are you threatening me?
I am presenting options.
Tiziana's got no guild support here, so she has to play both Good Cop and Bad Cop all by herself.
Faveo put you up to this didn't he?
On the contrary. The Judgemaster would be especially displeased, I imagine, with my forthrightness.
Yet you are unashamed to admit it.
"The veils of deception, set aflame; to the mask of lies, do the same."
A song?
The Bright Chorus. It had once been the moral compass for the Luca. That was a verse from it. No one sings them anymore.
Make your choice, Inspettore. The wick of time is ever burning.
I suspect these are Maskrunners.
Why?
Just before this, we found evidence that has led us to believe that they have taken Razitof captive.
What would they want with him?
He was creating fey.
What?
I don't know why, or how he knows how to, but he was. And now the Maskrunners have him.
You believe they are after the Head Vegilus as well?
If she knows about this, then perhaps.
And you think following her trail will lead you to him?
I think it's better than knocking on the Maskrunners' doors and asking for Razitof back, yes.
I see. You chose well, Inspettore.
Don't make me regret it. Now come on. If those men were guarding the entrance, Kairi's still somewhere here.

quote:

Tiziana de Felici

Fascinating.

Never before have I met someone in the Citte that is at once so immersed in the dance of politics yet so insolent towards its customs. She is a pawn in the grand game, and she knows it, but yet she refuses to play by the unspoken rules - she seems to loathe secrecy, she does away with any hint of deception and perhaps most gravely, she trumpets her motivations with nary a hint of embarrassment. Granted, I might be reading her wrong and perhaps she is lying about her true goals, but somehow I don't find that likely.

How I am supposed to deal with this honest enigma of a woman is currently beyond me, but I am equal parts cautious and curious about her presence in the investigation.

-Mars de la Fey-

-The Conoscenza-

quote:

The First

The founder of Ombre is a man referred to as the First, whose actual name was Theronin Ateo. Born in the land of Altimire, Theronin was considered cursed by his curiosity - he'd always wondered what lay beyond the mountain Murare, in the lands they'd known as the Dark Beyond. There were tales, of course - of the presence of unspeakable evils, of death, of tainted lands - though Theronin remained skeptical. He was a man who needed to see with his own eyes to believe, and so, disobeying strict orders from the priests of his theocratic country, he brought a group of adventurers together and ventured into the Dark Beyond.

His journey to the Echoing Plains set him upon Sierra Vede, and he met with fey there. Cautious, he never interacted very deeply with them, but he recognised their existence, and wished to learn more about them.

He returned to Altimire and attempted to requisition larger forces to explore the wilderness that lay beyond, but when he told the priests the stories of his expeditions, they called him blasphemous.

According to their religious texts, the people of Altimire were promised salvation if they kept their holy lands free of the demons that lurked in the world beyond. Theronin's stories about these creatures that he found sparked a wave of terror that coursed through the priestly councils. Their reaction was to exile him and the taint which he brought back.

And so Theronin, as well as those others who had either supported him or who, too, had grown tired of the rigid Altimirian theocracy, left Altimire and journey through the Echoing Plains, until they reached Sierra Vede. Under the mountain's shadow they settled and began what was to grow into the prosperous nation known as Ombre today.

quote:

Ombric Calendar

The Ombric calendar is a strange one, by any standards. Time and history are divided into Canticles, each lasting various amounts of Mesuras (each of which in turn lasts four years). The reason for this is to be found in the history of the nation - the first settlers of Ombre were from the neighbouring theocratic nation of Altimire, and had been cast out for blasphemy. Spurned and spiteful, they vowed to stray from the ways and culture of their fatherland as much as they could. Where Altimirians listened to their heads and their gods, Ombrians listend to their hearts and their whims.
Ombre's disdain for organized religion is also the reason why they don't have any good swear words.

The first step that Ombre took away from Altimire was the adoption of its own calendar; instead of the Orian calendar that Altimire followed, which had years that consisted of three months each lasting approximately a hundred and twenty days, the Ombric calendar (also known as the Song of the Ages) was made to comprise years of eight months with approximately forty five days in each. The months are as follows: Inizia, Salira, Elodia, Kora, Ruvida, Picca, Scendera and Ophina. Though many refer to events by the Canticle in which they occurred, there is a slightly more accurate method of recording dates, though often only used by the Vegilus - years are recorded numerically from the establishment of Ombre. Vegilus use the suffix IL (Inizia Liberata) to denote the year of the event with respect to the founding of the nation.

Good. Now, let me repeat the call numbers again, and this time, I don't expect you to say that they don't exist, all right?
Y-Yes.
The first: DF.328.D439.KL3. The second: DT.854.A172.PG6. The third: DP.90...

They're looking for specific books. Razitof must have had something to do with this.
Well, best to act while we have the element of surprise.
Wait, Tiziana-
It's not important whether you surprise your enemies or your allies, just as long as you surprise somebody.

Get them!

-Mars de la Fey-

-The Conoscenza-

I told you, you chose well.
Unbind the Vegilus. Kalden, see if they need healing.

Are you hurt?
I'm fine. What are you doing here?
Saving you, apparently.
Well, you've done a mighty job at it.
Actually we were here for answers, but it seems all we've found are questions instead. He was asking you about books?
If only he just asked. Capturing all my Vegilus like this... a tad overdramatic, I'd say.
Why did he want them?
I don't know. I do remember their call numbers, though.
We should get them ourselves, then, see if-

Are those-

-Mars de la Fey-

-The Conoscenza-

It's related to why we came to find you, actually.
The fey?
This is not the first of its kind that I've encountered, and I have a theory as to how and where they're spawning.
I'm all ears.
One thing at a time. I'll tell you what we've learned about the fey after we get the books, if that's all right with you.
As much as I'd like to know now... I suppose my curiosity can wait. I can bring you to the books they were looking for, but they took all our Mascherines. Tossed them to the lower levels. If there are more fey out there...
We'll handle them.

And they're all cut loose.
Then let's go. We'll find the books and clear a way for the Vegilus as well.

quote:

The Registry: Vegilus

The Vegilus are the thinkers of the Registry, and its ranks comprise the brightest and most astute of Ombre's minds. Many beyond the White Spire fail to understand the importance of the Vegilus. To them, the men and women of the scrolls and the books are soft and foolish for choosing to forsake power in exchange for knowledge. Certainly, their opinion ignores the fact that knowledge oftn is, in itself, a form of power - the Vegilus live on the brink of discovery, and in a city that's been built upon the ruins of a civilisation that dominated lands the size of which Ombrians have never even dreamed, they are likely closer than anyone else in the Citte to understanding the wellspring of long lost ancient powers.

quote:

Kairi Aquila

If there is a search for a parable of how doggedness pays off, the story of Kairi Aquila would be a fine candidate.

Born of two Portieri, Kairi's life had not been paved with the intentions of guiding her towards academia. In fact, her parents had intended for her to rise through the ranks of the Portieri and hopefully be selected as an Inspettore. Her father was a Dirge and her mother was a Sicario; both trained her in their respective Media for the Vamus Tests, and taught her the histories of Ombre for her Accredita. Through it all, Kairi performed in the Media as her Portieri parents had expected - well. What they hadn't expected from their daughter, however, was her intense curiosity regarding the histories of the world.

When her parents would give her a summary of the Theralds, she would go on to ask about the entirety of Rhune and its culture; when they mentioned Salting, she would ask abut the First Canticle and how they'd seen and treated the phenomenon; when they warned her about the fey, she would ask about those found in the Echoing Plains and what they'd been like when the First arrived to establish Ombre. Constantly, however, her inquisitions would be quelled.

Focus on practicing your Media, her parents would say, and during her youth, she'd obey. All this changed when, at the age of eighteen, she sat for her Vamus tests and failed them.

When her parents found out, they were furious. It was impossible that she'd failed - they watched over her with the scrutiny of hawks - how could she have done poorly?

They learnt later that she'd intentionally flunked the tests of Media-proficiency. She didn't want to be a Portieri, she wanted to be a Vegilus, she told the testers first, then her parents. Upon seeing the fire in her eyes as she spoke those words, her parents realised that there was something special about their daughter. They realised that they could no longer control her and that they had to let go. Suffice to say, considering her current position in the Registry, that was a move that benefitted them all.

quote:

Tiziana de Felici

I suppose one benefit of having her trail along would be her prowess in battle. I shouldn't be surprised, given the fact that she is a Marshal of the most martial of the Seimora, with a discipline and straightforwardness she carries over to her personal life.

She has effectively coerced me into telling her about details regarding the investigation, accomplishing the feat with nary a drop of guile. I am impressed by the efficacy of her methods, as much as I am a victim to them - perhaps all this flitting about in shadows isn't as necessary or as efficient as our culture has led us to believe.

And then there is the point about the Bright Chorus. She knows it by heart, clearly, and that is confusing to me. There are very few in the Luca who still believe in the Bright Chorus - many believe that its tenets are outdated and impractical, and judging by her trust in the institution of the Luca, I'd have thought she'd be one of them. But yet, here she is, quoting it.

And so, the veil of questions surrounding this enigma thickens.

The first two books are on this level.

-Mars de la Fey-

-The Conoscenza-

It is. It's a compilation of folk tales that we believe the Dimenticate had once told.
That is incredibly thick.
What would Raz want with folktales?
We'll have time to figure it out later. We should get the other two.

-Mars de la Fey-

-The Conoscenza-

quote:

Luca Infinita: Origins

Of the guilds today, the Luca Infinita holds its place as the second oldest guild, approximately half a decade younger than the Altus Nobilis. Founded in the Fourth Canticle, the Luca Infinita, unlike most other guilds, grew from the seed of a less than pure intention.

After Ombre had secured its victory against its fatherland, Altimire, at the end of the March of Broken Songs, word of its power and potential spread throughout the lands, attracting a great many immigrants who were either dissatisfied with their own countries, or who were lured enough bythe enticing tales of Ombre's power that they were willing to pull roots and sail to our shores. The surge in population in the Fourth Canticle might not have been as considerable as that in the Sixth Canticle, but it was sizable enough that the Portieri at the time could not cope with the increase in areas that they had to watch. Violence and crime spread throughout the lands and though many in the Luca would tell you that their guild was fashioned with the intention of combating that influx in crime, the truth is less simple than that.

Velario Emirus, the founder of the Luca Infinita (and, ironically, ancestor to Vicario Emirus, current leader of the Labores Solis) lost his son to a robber in the streets, who killed the young boy because he'd made the mistake of forgetting to hide a precious stone he'd bought for his parents for their anniversary. The robber made off with the stone (history has forgotten its exact nature, though some suspect it had been a Skystone from Illisia), and left Velario with nothing but a deep-seated thirst for vengeance.

Velario spent the subsequent months hunting his son's murderer and when he found him, made short work of the man (Velario was Masquerada; his son's murderer was not). The tragic story and its satisfying conclusion spread quickly through the streets of Prima Campa and inspired a great many others to take action against the nascent criminal industry. It was only upon seeing the effect that his vengeance had on those around him, that Velario realised he'd tapped into a wellspring of discontent shared by much of society, Masquerada and Contadani alike. it was then that the idea of forming a guild struck the man, and so the Luca Infinita was born.

In modernity, the Golden Guild has strayed quite substantially from its roots, and has become blinded by its obeisance to laws, rather than to justice (though many in their ranks would argue they are one and the same).

quote:

Canticles

The Ombric calendar is divided into Canticles, each lasting an indeterminate number of years. It is the responsibility of the Songstresses of the Citte to recognise the events that spell the end of a Canticle - the ending of a war, or a great economic windfall, for example - and to then name the Canticle and chronicle all of the major events that have transpired since it began. Needless to say, the process through which a Canticle is declared over is an incredibly subjective one. Though there are many who disagree with the haphazard and disorganised method of chronicling the ages, tradition can sometimes be stronger than sense, and the method has been preserved since Ombre's beginning.

Ombre is currently in its eighth Canticle, and, as of my writing this, is in its four hundred and seventh year since its liberation (407IL).

-Mars de la Fey-

-The Conoscenza-

quote:

Guardia Sempra

All Masquerada who receive some sort of tutelage in the Media often begin their training by learning how to establish a defensive barrier pedagogically known as a guardia sempra. Colloquially, however, this defensive mechanism is referred to as a focus shield, for in order to maintain it, a Masquerada must constantly devote a fraction of their trained mind to intercept incoming offensive manoeuvres with a flash of their element. This brief manifestation of a barrier assists the Masquerada in reducing any sort of damage coming their way.

Certainly, even the mind of a trained Masquerada can grow weary if subjected to relentless onslaught, and under such pressure, a Masquerada's guardia sempra can fail to defend the Masquerada against incoming assaults, leaving them vulnerable to attack.

It's right here. This is a book about Dimenticate history. It chronicles the empire's expansion of territory.
That's huge.
Your Regenti was interested in ancient people, it seems.
But why?
We'll get the last one, and hopefully we'll find our answers.
It's upstairs.
Let's go.

-Relentless-

Kairi, get back!

In Ombre, the library books stamp you late.

Going light on repositioning and status effects hurt me a little here. When enemies want to do something, I pretty much have to let them.

Plus it looks kind of like Atmos Ring is just altogether inferior to Hopespring--although they'd probably work well in combination--and Judgement & Sanction are both weaker than Creed, which Tiziana also has. Lesson learned, I guess.

Maybe it just seems that way because I don't have a Portieri platoon backing me up this time.

When one of the Triplets goes down, the others will heal a bit.

-The Conoscenza-

I hope so.
I certainly hope your theories about the fey will explain that to me.
I'm hoping they do too, but again, let us find the last book first.

I recognised its spin while you were fighting the creature.
And its size, no doubt.
Tides... Of all the books we had to collect, it had to be the three biggest ones?
Inspettore, if it's your plan to go through each...
I don't think we have any other choice.
Even with a pair of eyes on each volume, it'll take you at least a week to get through them.
Worse, still, we don't even know what we're looking for.
Hold on... I need a moment to think.
Cicero, what if we try to-
By myself, please.

All right, Raz, give me something.

Yes! All right, "Power. Creating power, using it to expand..."

"...anything that smacks of strength or supremacy."
Inspettore.

I said I'd like to be alone, Marshal.
Are you all right?
I will be if you give me a second.
All right. I'll see you with the others, then.

*sigh*

Yes, I have.
You have an idea on how to get us through the tomes, then?
I do, in fact. Follow me.
*sigh*

Just a moment, Kairi, please. Ahem. I apologise for the delay. I understand how uncomfortable it must be standing here, but there is a final request that I have for you.

I am looking for information within this book, as well as within the two my colleagues are carrying.

I do not have the luxury of time to sift through its contents, and I implore you to lend me your assistance, for just a few moments, in this endeavour.

Cicero, they might be Vegilus, but that doesn't mean that they can cover a thousand pages in one day-

*RRRIP*

*gasp* Inspettore!

Books can be repaired, rewritten. Time cannot. Mariner. Marshal. Perhaps you'd like to cover your eyes, Kairi.

*BOOK CRIMES*

... And, maybe your ears.

Inspettore, I think I found something.
Go on.
I'm looking at a timeline of the Dimenticate's history of expansion. There was a specific point in time after which they began furiously claiming land.
And what point is that?
It's referred to as Iechein Ciun, of the year of Nuarthe.
Good. Everyone else, keep that in mind.
Something else, sir!
Yes?
It's a religious text about some godsends the Dimenticate were supposedly blessed with.
Go on.
They're referred to here as the Knife, the Seed and the Heart.
They're here, as well. Says that they changed the very face of Dimenticate society. Allowed them to start winning wars.
It would fit the timeline.
Excellent. The Knife, the Heart, and the Seed, remember those names!
Something more, sir! From a story. It's about where they came from. "These were flesh of the god himself. From the marrow of our father's bone, they were presented to us in steepled fingers of stone."
Good, good, now does anyone have anything on what exactly they were? How they functioned? What they did? ... Well, it was worth a try. Is there anything else anyone deems important? ... I suppose that's it, then. Thank you all for your cooperation. You're quite free to leave when you're ready.

Desperation breeds innovation.
And your search criteria were... conveniently accurate.
A hunch. If Maskrunners were searching for something, what else would it be, but power?
So... now, what?
Now, recollection. The Maskrunners knew about the numbers certainly, from Razitof.
Razitof?
They have him. Captured him, for what I now suspect to be his research.
The Knife, Seed and Heart?
What do they do, exactly? All we understand is that they were the key to the Dimenticate's power, but how?
I'm sure we'll soon find out. If the Maskrunners have captured Razitof and are now looking for books that involve them...
They're after the artefacts.
And so are we. It's our best bet at finding Razitof.
Then we have to beat them to it.
We can start by paying the Cleaver a visit.
I don't recognize the name.
"In steepled fingers of stone." There is only one place that is conjured from that imagery. A set of ruins in Cacciatore territory called the Cleaver.
But that quote was from a story.
If you have stronger leads, Mariner, I suggest you lay them out, please.
You're right. I apologise.
Now, if that's all-
One last thing, Cicero...
Ah yes, the fey. Of course. I'll meet you at the coach.

Papers, books, anything that can be used as a physical building block for a form...

-Ouij'tre (the Singing Tree Remembers)-

quote:

In the Conoscenza, we encountered Maskrunners dressed as Portieri who had taken the Vegilus hostage. I dislike, intensely, the trajectory of this investigation. The less this has to do with Maskrunners, the better I'll feel. Anyway, the Maskrunners must have obtained the uniforms through the Quiet Order - one of the Registry's uniform houses was located there - and though their presence in the investigation might make me uncomfortable, I cannot deny that it has put us on a better path.

They had been asking after specific books about Dimenticate history, books that must have been what Razitof had been after, during his trips to the Conoscenza, and what had informed his subsequent research. The books (which we found with the aid of Kairi) speak of ancient artefacts called the Knife, Seed and Heart, and though I cannot let the others know just yet, I believe these artefacts were intimately linked to the creation of the Mascherines. In the meantime, they will have to just accept that Razitof had been on a quest to understand how the Dimenticate came into such power.

The books also spoke of a place referred to as "steepled fingers of stone." I believe that is a reference to a set of ancient ruins called the Cleaver, and though I am unsure what we will find there, I do believe it will lead us to more answers.

In the meantime, Kairi has promised to further investigate the creation of fey - I have told her all I know and all I suspect, and she is excited about testing the hypothesis.

- They probably think we're lazy.
- Lazy?! They haven't seen how much work we put into our instruments!

- Smooth, elegant. I doubt someone my size could pull it off.
- I don't know many who can. The Caprice is one of the hardest flourishes that exist.

quote:

The Eterea: Merumento and Mecantare

The Eterea are one of the three pairs of Media that are currently recognised, and have their practitioners concentrating on the craft of music to affect their branding prowess. The two constituent Media are: Merumento and Mecantare. The Eterea are unusual in their mechanisms because neither require the practicing Masquerada to move or be in direct physical proximity of the subject of their branding; only Dirges and Songstresses can brand materials at a significant distance from them.

- And how does Maric expect me to cultivate relations when he constantly sabotages my attempts at establishing rapport with those barbarians?
- The Zoric people are not barbarians, Edan.
- Of course they are. Have you seen the way they eat? And the way they speak, and the things they drink?
- ... And you said Maric was sabotaging your relations?

I hope I haven't kept you waiting.
I need to return to my Court.
That was quick.
I feel the Judgemaster would want to know that one of the Registry's members was seeking artefacts of great power.
I thought you said you weren't a player in the game of politics.
I am not playing politics, Inspettore. I am fulfilling my duties. Consider it a privilege that I am even letting you know.
I don't suppose there's anything I can do to talk you out of it?
You suppose correctly.
In that case, I should at least thank you for your assistance today. It's good to know the Bright Chorus is still alive in the hearts of some.
Well I... I suppose you're welcome. I will see you soon, Inspettore.

I may not enjoy politics, but let this be a lesson to you, Mariner. If you cannot kill a spy, then you'd do just as well to befriend them. Come on. We have ruins to investigate.

It's so exciting, isn't it, sister?
What?
We're going to the ruins!
I hope you know we're not actually going to go follow them inside.
W-What?!
You'll not miss much, anyway.
Not a fan of ruins, sir?
Hate them. For my Accredita, I scored the worst for the section about ruins and archaeology.
Why's that?
Well, for one, when I'd been-
...When you'd been?
Not again, Kalden.
Come on.
He may not care for political maneuverings but Kalden's "Here comes the airplane" approach seems to be surefire against Cicero's stubborn moods.
When I'd been Contadani, before I joined the Registry, I used to spend a lot of time along the highways. There were a pair of Vegilus that came by every morning on their way to the White Spire, who would talk about ruins and interesting finds. Every time I listened to them, walking in their fancy robes, all I could think... Was 'why do they have so much energy for the dead, when the living still suffer'? Now look what you've done, Mariner. You made me kill the mood.
Please don't say that, sir. That was, umm, lighten-enlight-enlightening, yes, enlightening.
He means 'thank you', sir.
