Turn 1 - 1200 05 August 1914 - Liège

North

We move 9th Uhlans toward Lixhe. It'll take us a while to cross, because there's obstacles we need to clear first. We'll hopefully be across by dark, however.

3rd Uhlans is pulled back toward the outskirts of Vise, and we send our horses to the rear to better prepare for combat. The machinegun detachments sets up. They have a three hex maximum range and will be able to cover any thrusts the Belgians might decided to make. We pull the scouts in as well to cover our left flank.

South

5th Uhlans surges forward. One company captures the near side of the bridge, and the other runs into an ambush from a Belgian cavalry detachment:

We lose a man and the unit is halted in confusion. Two more companies from 5th Uhlans arrive to reinforce, however, as well as a single company from 13th Uhlans.

Half of 13th Uhlans rides hard for Amblève; I Company reports it can see the rooftops to the north. The other half rides north toward Beaufays to backstoop 5th Uhlans and threaten Amblève from the east.

Belgian Turn

In the north, the Belgians maneuver out of our sight--there's no contact but we know they're out there. Some recon will be in order next turn.

In the south, there's some desultory gunfire exchanged between the two cavalry groups. III Company 13th Uhlans discovers it's only been issued half the authorized ammunition--orders are quickly sent to the rear for resupply but it's uncertain how long it will take to rectify this mess. III Company 5th Uhlans reports sighting a second Belgian cavalry detachment to the northwest.
