Game Mechanics: Pasaran Hunting

Etrian Odyssey III has a rather interesting FOE type it introduced, the Pasarans. If you’re familiar with Dragon Quest, these FOEs are essentially the equivalent of Metal Slimes. Rare and a huge pain in the butt to take down. But if you’re successful in killing them, you’ll be rewarded greatly.

Part of the difficulty in taking down Pasarans is finding one to fight in the first place, but killing them in battle is no small matter either. They have a deceptively small amount of HP, but take only 25% damage from everything, including Almighty damage. So just killing one can be a herculean task. But we can talk about how to kill them later. For now, let's just focus on how to find one.

Pasarans can by spawned by 2 methods. Walking around, or using a tent. Using a tent actually has a higher chance to spawn Pasarans than walking around. However, it isn’t quite as easy as I say. There are some requirements that must be fulfilled before a Pasaran can spawn. A certain area of the map on each floor must be well explored first. From there, a tent can be used to have a chance to spawn them. However, for walking around, you have to walk in a certain area of the map to have the chance to spawn them. Once a Pasaran spawns, they will attempt to flee from the player. However, they can only move 1 step every 4 turns. (Aside from the floor 24 Pasarans, which stay completely still until time runs out.) Not to mention that they can also phase through walls, making them trickier to pin down. But with careful manipulation, you can catch up to a Pasaran and possibly corner it before it runs off the map or phases through a wall out of your reach.

Do note that once a Pasaran is killed, 14 days must pass before it can be refought. Though Pasarans spawned by walking and Pasarans spawned by tents are considered to be entirely different Pasarans for this purpose. This update will showcase exactly where Pasarans can be spawned, as well as where to trigger their spawns. Here’s a legend for the maps.

This will denote the area where you have to explore in order to trigger Pasaran spawns through the walking and tent methods.

This will denote the area where you will have to walk in order to spawn a Pasaran through walking.

This will denote a Pasaran’s possible spawn point, of which there are up to 2 on any map.

And now for the maps themselves.

Now that we know how to make one spawn and the best places to hunt them down, let's focus on figuring out how to kill them once you've done so.

The key things to keep in mind are that you effectively have to deal 4 times as much damage as their HP in order to kill them, so don't be fooled by their seemingly low amount of HP. The only time it really comes into play is if you've infliced Poison or Plague on them. A max level Call Insect from a Wildling can one shot the Pasarans in the first three Strata, while two shotting the ones from the ones you encounter after that. Cursed technically applies a form of fixed damage, but the Pasarans barely any damage with their regular attacks.
