Update 24: Welcome to Etrian Odyssey

Dammit dammit dammit! Why did I tell him that!? And Olympia, she... ARGH!

Uhhhh...

Well, the thread voted to tell the truth to Agata, so we'll do that.

Should we tell him? He wishes to help the girl.

But Hypatia specifically requested for us to not tell him.

A request that we never got a chance to agree to.

Look, I don't think-

Oh for the love of. Look. We can't argue about this all day. Let's just tell him. I'm pretty sure there's no harm in that.

Are you sure about this?

Look, it'll be fine! Yeah, we'll tell you! It's uh... wait, where was that nest again?

Sweet! Thanks, Tidehunt! Way to help out a fellow explorer! I owe you one!

You pull out your map and show him a detailed route to the ancient fish’s nest.

It's in this portion of the floor.

Alright... Got it! I’ll get over there on the double! See ya!

Agata sighs before leaving on his own, but still Hypatia does not budge an inch. You are now concerned for both of them... Should you talk to Hypatia or pursue Agata?

Uh, you alright there, Hypatia? Maybe this wasn't a good idea.

Her expression is distressed and haunted... She seems lost for how to proceed. Perhaps you should pursue Agata in her place to talk him out of it, but it may be a guild issue...

Should we go after him?

Well he's certainly not gonna survive by himself.

There's a shortcut near the nest. We may be able to cut him off there.

This happens on the way to the nest.

Unbind is cheaper.

You assume that she is here due to her concern for Agata, but then a sickening noise resounds! The female astrologer darts off toward the nest alone quicker than you can react! The fiend ahead is too dangerous for her alone! You must hurry and reach the fish’s nest first!

Quickly!

Oh no...

He's... he's...!

At the girl’s feet is a boy’s bloodied form, lying still with a peaceful expression.

Her voice is almost inaudible as she stands and looks toward the heavens.

I came here once with my father when I was young... His guild was powerful, but... A swarm of ancient fish fell upon us and my father was cut down trying to protect me... I used a thread to escape... And then buried the memory because it was too painful to bear... Seeing Agata fight, I remembered. But the shock of the memory left me open to attack... This time, Agata protected me... Both of them gave their lives for me... Father... and now Agata...

...I think we should leave her alone.

You fear that your continued presence would only disturb her further, so you withdraw...

I-I... Dammit! Why did I tell him that!? What was I thinking, telling him where the nest was!? Ugh!

Well, it's too late to change anything now. All you can really do now, is to make sure something like that doesn't happen again.

Instead of charging forward blindly, try thinking things through in the future.

I should have said no...

If you decided to tell Agata where the nest is, congratulations! You just got him killed! Hypatia asked the party to not tell him, and you opted to tell him. He actually would have lived if you listened to Hypatia and withheld the information. But as it stands, this is the last time in the game that we will see Guild Murotsumi.

Antifire lowers Fire damage by 30%.

I decided to see if I could kill one of the fish at this point.

Arise!

I've still got my pride.

I guess not.

I couldn't.

Now back to where we were before.

I could go left here.

But there's treasure to be found to the right.

A passage here.

A level up here.

These should keep our feet safe!

Rain or Shine nullifies the effects of damage and mud tiles for a certain number of steps. Right now, it nullifies them for 10 steps, which isn't too helpful.

And some treasure here.

Izuna deals 235% damage and has a 45% chance to inflict Petrification. Very decent for getting rid of enemies that you just don't want to deal with. It won't work on bosses, though.

Here's a shortcut back to an earlier area.

You immediately rush to his side, but he has already passed away. He must have borne the brunt of some vicious attack... His thick armor is rent in twain.

Why? Why are there so many deaths down here?

The Labyrinth is a dangerous place. If it's too much, you give up and go home, or this happens.

Huh. I wonder when one of us is gonna bite it.

Everyone, look! There's a trail of blood leading down that path!

As the rest of the party shuddered at the carnage, Cassandra saw something and alerted the others. Whatever murdered this sentry was drenched in blood, which left a trail down a nearby path. You consider with some trepidation whether to follow the trail of blood or retreat for now.

Mope all you want, but Olympia is still out there. We must catch her if we wish to prevent any more murders.

More and more of them begin pouring past you, flittering into the bushes. You manage to see one clearly and notice that these are all starfish--a huge number of them! You can watch them through the foliage to investigate the starfish, or ignore them.

Fascinating. So these are the starfish that scholar wanted us to observe. Let's take a closer look.

The sight before your eyes momentarily startles you! A countless number of starfish are gathered here, lying in piles on the ground... but why? You are filled with curiosity, but you remember to write what you see on a piece of parchment. You can continue observing them, or you can take your report back to the city and turn it in.

Huh, what are they doing?

Now you're gonna be asked a bunch of times if you want to stay. Saying no at any point will net you a lesser reward.

As you study the starfish, you see what looks like bones scattered under them. Putting aside any trepidation, you look more carefully and see that it’s actually coral. You can continue observing them, or you can take your report back to the city and turn it in.

It looks like they're eating the coral.

The starfish that were eating the coral begin to do something that astounds you! The starfish begin to surround one of their number and start eating its body! ...But the starfish being eaten is regenerating at a tremendous speed! As this continues, the starfish being eaten grows larger and begins to change its shape! It seems that you happened to be here to witness the birth of a new King Starfish! You can continue observing them, or you can take your report back to the city and turn it in.

So that's where those King Starfish come from.

This must be some sort of-

Uhhh, Asteria? You might want to stop taking notes.

Hmm? Why's- Oh dear.

The new King Starfish begins to eat some of the smaller starfish, and grows even larger! Unfortunately, the King Starfish notices the unwanted guests to its coronation and roars at you! The smaller starfish all turn in your direction... Despite not having faces, they look hostile. If you want to make it out of here alive, you will have to face the swarms of starfish!

Easy peasy.

Angered even more by the violence, a second wave of starfish rushes towards you!

There's more coming!

Oh no. I have to fight 5 of them instead of 3.

Killed in the line of duty...

Wakey wakey!

I won't fail this time.

Through the exhaustion of battle, you roar in defiance towards the King Starfish!

You've been dethroned.

Hellfire was overkill, but that was just in case the Petrification didn't proc.

You take a deep breath and look around, but all you see are bits of starfish floating in ichor.

Well, they're all dead now.

Sheesh. We're asked to observe some starfish, and we end up fighting for our lives. Hopefully all this data will satisfy the client.

This isn’t what you had intended to happen, but you should turn in your report to the bar.

Or are you here to tell me what in the blue hell happened to my missing man?

Oh right we never- Oh crap. Uhhh...

He... He... died. We just saw his body a while ago.

He was dead!? That can’t be! Don’t even joke about that! Where’s your proof!?

You doubt whether any words would be sufficient to help him accept his comrade’s death right now. The sentry seems to be paying you no heed, so you decide to take your leave.

Eventually, you notice a medal given to new recruits clutched tightly in his hand. It must have been very important to him to hold onto even during his dying moments... Perhaps the corpse’s identity will come to light if you take the medal with you. The choice is yours whether to pluck the medal from the corpse or to leave it be.

Geez, these are some stiff fingers!

Rigor mortis makes the fingers as difficult to pry open as if he was still alive, but you succeed. You pay a silent tribute to the fallen sentry before leaving the area.

I'm sorry I couldn't help...

This happened on the way back. Really loving this party.

And since I ran out of Nectars and TP, I start using up my Nectar IIs. Well it's better than letting it go unused and dying because of that. Etrian Odyssey does not favor hoarding. You get into a bad situation? Use an item if it'll save you, even if it's ultra rare or something! Needlessly hoarding will get you wiped in these games.

Look, we found this on him.

You produce the sentry’s blood- encrusted medal and hand it to his livid captain.

This is his...! No... There must be some mistake... How... How could this...?

Even with the helm muffling his voice, you can discern his despair at the fragility of life. As you grope for something to say to him, he takes the initiative to speak to you instead.

I’m sorry, I was just a little shaken. It may seem callous of me, but I’m all right now. The moment we got our orders to delve into the Labyrinth, I knew this was one possible outcome. Thank you for taking the time to look for him. Here, a little something for your troubles.

I’d best get back to Kujura and break the news to him. Can’t stand around here forever, after all.

With that, the sentry gathers his compatriots in the area for the trek back to their base camp. You see them off before resuming your search through the Labyrinth.

A nice upgrade in damage, though she does lose out on the Volt attribute.

We're obviously not done with the floor yet, but this is all that can be explored for now.

When you touch it, however, it crumbles away... It seems the pillar was made of salt. Your exertions in the Labyrinth may have caused you to sweat more than you would have thought... If you feel the need to replenish your salt, you may gather a pile of the salt and lick it.

This is actually a class specific event. If you say no without a Buccaneer in the party:

It's probably not sanitary to lick random stuff in the Labyrinth.

You reconsider the wisdom of carelessly licking objects in the Labyrinth and withdraw.

If you say no with a Buccaneer in the party:

Don't worry. Having a bit of salt can be good for your body. And with all the nutrients this baby probably soaked up, it'll probably be even better!

Just as you decide to err on the side of caution, Scott puts a hand on your shoulder. According to Scott, this pillar’s long-accreted nutrients would be quite refreshing. You decide to follow Scott’s advice and gather some salt from the pillar before licking it. The nutritious salt slowly heals the sodium you lost through your perspiration!

If you say yes:

You break off a portion of the crumbling crystal pillar and lick it carefully. The nutritious salt slowly heals the sodium you lost through your perspiration!

Ahhh! I really needed that.

I feel so refreshed!

The salt is so refreshing that you are immediately tempted to take another lick. A small voice inside suggests that too much salt could be harmful. Should you heed it...?

If you say no:

As nutritious as salt is, too much of it can be harmful.

You decline, not wanting to risk an excess of salt. You leave the temptation and the room behind.

If you say yes with a Buccaneer in the party:

Let's have another lick!

Whoa, hold on there little missy! Salt's good for you and all, but too much of it can be bad for your health.

You are about to take a second lick of the pillar, addicted by now to its taste... But Scott stops you, saying that too much salt could be injurious to your health. It seems that there can indeed be too much of a good thing... You nod and return to your journey.

Hmm. Thanks for the warning.

If you say yes without a Buccaneer in the party:

Let's have another lick! Mmm-PLEH! PLEH!

You lick the salt again, addicted by now to its taste, but the excess of salt proved harmful.

We shouldn't have done that.

Your experience proves there can be too much of a good thing. You regretfully leave the room.

Some class specific events just simply force a good outcome, or stops you from experiencing a bad one, instead of having a unique event happen.

Rock Corals are much tougher versions of Hungry Corals. They hit very hard, and pretty much shut down any physical attackers in your party. Yeah at this point, the game is pretty much screaming at you to use Zodiacs. If you don't have them, Rock Corals are nightmares to deal with.

If you do, they're not too tough. Though they may have caused heavy damage to your party.

Oh come on!

Really Faye? Really?

What you are witnessing is probably the average Etrian Odyssey experience. Deaths everywhere. Random encounters tend to be very dangerous, and there aren't too many enemies that are just trash mobs and nothing more. And even in some formations, trash mobs can be threatening.

He raises a hand in greeting, but his movements seem slow and somewhat pained.

What happened!? Are you okay?

We were looking for that girl... But my group was overrun by the monsters and annihilated. No one left but me.

He mutters before barking a dry, pessimistic laugh. His example is a fearsome warning to continue only with the utmost caution... You may press on as is, or ease the sentry’s pain if you possess any spare medicine.

Can't we do anything for him? We can't just leave him like that.

There are a few ways that we can handle this,

A Medica/A Medica II:

Here's some medicine.

The sentry cheerfully accepts the proffered medicine.

Thank you, Guild Tidehunt. This should get me back on my feet. I’ll go back soon.

The sentry gulps the medicine down and stretches out to sleep on the grotto floor. His strength should return once he’s rested. You leave quietly so as not to disturb his sleep.

Let Faye cure him:

This option isn't available if you don't have a Monk in the party.

Hang on, I got this. There there, you'll be fine.

Faye stepped forth and applied a monk’s knowledge of the healing chakras to the sentry. After Faye finishes, the sentry thanks you, the color having returned to his face.

Then it continues on as normal.

Give him nothing:

You think twice and elect not to give the sentry any medicine. Reasoning that you’ll only be a burden if you stay with him while he’s wounded, you leave the area.

I opted to give him a Medica II. You do get something later depending on what your choice was. If you decided to cure him. You can also talk to him again after healing him.

He seems to be trying to regain his strength. You should let him rest.

E4 Mine Point:
Jet: 60% Gather Rate.
Phyllite: 40% Gather Rate.
Magnetite: Rare.
Common Gather Periods: 2 to 10.
Rare Gather Periods: 1 to 5.

GAH! I won't be able to move these for a while.

Not only do Arm binds prevent the use of arm skills, they also halve the damage output of STR based attacks. So these can shut down your physical attackers.

Ice Mastery now gives a 6% boost to Ice damage. But more importantly...

A level 5 Ice Mastery unlocks this skill. Which I'll get for her on her next level up.

Up ahead there's more Sea Wanderers. This time in a group of 4.

They're guarding a shortcut, which is vital to progress.

Obviously there's more to the floor, but we can't explore it for now.

The same Scaled Dragon from before. If you manage to kill this one, you can actually skip exploring that portion of the 8th floor.

Like with Narmer, I don't suggest using this on the upcoming Stratum boss, since it's also an easy conditional to snag later. I do suggest maybe using this for an upcoming Sea boss.

High Walrus
HP: 456
TP: 73
STR: 30
VIT: 24
AGI: 18
LUC: 22
TEC: 15
Attack Type: Pierce
Exp: 1088
Item Drops:

--A muscular arm to heavy for the average human to carry.
-Drop 2: N/A
-Gold: Icicle Fang - 80% Drop Rate. Kill while head is bound. 1 needed for Cranequin (Crossbow.)
--Icy fang which causes frostbite in its victims.
Description: A sea beast that's proud of its two sharp, armor-piercing tusks, as well as its immense form.
Damage Resistances: Slash: 100% Strike: 100% Pierce: 100% Fire: 150% Ice: 100% Volt: 150%
Ailment Resistances: Sleep: 100% Confusion: 50% Plague: 122% Poison: 100% Blind: 100% Curse: 100% Paralysis: 50%
Bind Resistances: Head: 100% Arm: 100% Leg: 122%
Other Resistances: Death: 50% Petrification: 50% Stun: 100%

Skills:

Ruin Fangs: Uses the Head. A single target Slash attack that deals 75% damage and attacks the target twice.

If you thought High Onneps were bad, High Walruses are even worse. They hit a lot harder, and their skill is pretty much guaranteed to one shot whoever it targets. You do have a Zodiac, right? Nope? Well, good luck. In fact, it might be best to just run from them if they're really too much for you.

Yipes! That was close!

Luckily, Faye avoided dying for a 4th time.

If you can't handle these things by themselves, you really won't be ready by the time they start showing up in tougher formations.

The currents make a return.

And this one is blocking a path.

The top portion happens to be in the shape of a bench large enough for your guild to sit and rest. A quick glance around reveals no monsters... It seems possible to rest here if you so choose.

Ugh, are we ever gonna catch up to her?

Hmm, how about we take a little break for now? I'm sure we could all use one.

We could rest on those coral.

The coral bench is comfortable. Your party’s fatigue is eased by the much-needed rest.

Let us resume our-MONSTERS!

However, when you stand ready to resume your journey, the ”bench” suddenly begins to move! It appears that you were seated on top of a monster that catches its flies with honey, not vinegar...! It is fortunate, you reflect as you draw your weapons, that you are fully rested for this battle!

So here's kind of a dick move that this game likes to pull. Bait and switches. They make you think something good has happened, only to follow it up with something much worse. You're probably gonna lose all that HP you healed in this fight due to how tough Rock Corals can be.

Fortunately, that fight wasn't too much trouble for me, but I'm pretty much out of TP now.

OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY!

NO!

Curse you! Yeah, Pasaran hunting? A huge pain. It's not a reliable way to grind since you have to get really lucky with the Pasaran placements.

B2 Chop Point:
Sturdy Timber: 30% Gather Rate.
Indigo Pith: 60% Gather Rate.
Abyssal Twig: Rare.
Common Gather Periods: 1 to 12.
Rare Gather Periods: 1 to 5.

Fortunately I brought tents just in case my supplies ran low.

I used 3 of them.

Just how long were you in this Labyrinth!?

Well, I found the stairs up to the 4th floor fast enough, but it took me a while to get up to the 2nd floor.

AHEM! Shouldn't you be hunting down that woman instead of resting here for the entire day?

Oh. Right. Let's go.

Unbind is even cheaper.

W-We found her! That woman!

The sentry appears to be relieved to see you.

Where is she now?

She went down the stairs ahead. The other sentries followed... But you better go too!

The sentry then runs past you, saying something about needing to report the matter to Kujura. If he speaks true, you are closing in on the object of your search. You must be very cautious now...

If you manage to kill that Scaled Dragon, you can actually skip a majority of the 7th floor.

Save this for the Stratum boss.

Mists halve the amount of damage a damage type does in battle. There's one for each damage type except for Almighty. However, there's a downside to them. Mists affect both your party and the enemies. So you have to be careful in how you use them, otherwise you might end up creating a situation where both your party and the enemy can't do anything to each other. This wasn't the case in the first two games, but Mists got nerfed because of how everyone used them to make boss fights a lot easier in EO2.

Also had another near death here.

Which didn't last for long since Alice actually died later.

At least Cassandra got a level up out of it.

Antifire reduces the damage of Fire attacks by 36%.

After confirming that you are with the investigation, the sentry explains the situation to you.

So what happened next?

The six of us chased her into a dead end to the south, but just when we had her cornered... A swarm of ancient fish popped up out of the blue, and five of my men were gone in an instant.

Apparently, in the sentry’s haste to escape, the girl’s trail was lost... You might try heading to the dead end to the south and investigate the area where Olympia was seen.

We shall take things from here. Head back to the camp so you can recover.

Here's the last swarm of Sea Wanderers in this Stratum.

Aha! I think I figured out where Olympia disappeared to.

Maybe she went through here.

Get ready. Who knows what she's gonna do next.

Video: Confrontation

You step past a wall of blue rocks and coral to discover Olympia, the object of your search.

Olympia coldly and emotionlessly spits these words at you, utterly reversed from her previous tone.

Go home if you value your lives. Your continued search for the Deep City will be your deaths.

Yeah, I don't think so. And you have a lot to answer for. You're coming with us!

With this, Olympia raises one hand into the air. In response to her signal, a beast appears from the depths of the reef, between you and the girl!

I do not do this lightly. But you have ignored my warnings and persisted in your quest...

As the girl brings her arm down to point at you, the beast charges! The time has come for battle!

Yep, that's right. A mandatory FOE fight. If you're not prepared for this, the fight can be a massive dick move. Remember that it's vulnerable to Sleep, and once it gets below 51% of its HP, it'll always use Tear Apart. This miniboss can be tough to deal with if you have a bad party. But if you are prepared for it?

Roast it.

MAGIC!

Really? You just did that?

You should have used the crocs from Lagaard! I heard those are a lot tougher.

It's a joke.

Nowhere to run, Olympia.

...I have no other choice. I must...

The girl is suddenly interrupted by a voice ringing from the heavens.

Olympia also seems to hear the mysterious echoing voice and nods discontentedly.

And you, small ones... mark me well. We have our own designs in stopping you. You have your own circumstances, naturally. Such is the world.

A flash of white.

The voice from the heavens takes a deep sigh, after which a blue sphere appears before you.

This Sea Bead has power over this grove. Use it to make your way through the Labyrinth to me. Oceanmaster Ketos shall greet you. Overcome that trial to gain free entry to the Deep City.

That's the boss for this Stratum.

...I suppose this is goodbye, members of Tidehunt. I doubt we’ll meet again.

Wha!? Hey! Come back here!

This may be a good opportunity to report to Kujura on Oceanmaster Ketos and the strange Sea Bead.

It's too late. She's gone.

Senator Flowdia certainly isn't going to be happy about this.

You all caught that, right? She wasn't working alone...

Hmm. Just what did we get ourselves into?

Well, we better talk to Kujara so he can call off the hunt. Even if we failed our mission, I'm certain he'll want to hear about what happened here.

Unless you really need to go back to town, resist the urge to use an Ariadne Thread. You have to talk to Kujara again to advance the plot. As for the level ups...

Rain or Shine nullifies hazard tiles for 15 steps.

Keburi no Sue reduces the TP cost of all skills by 3.

Also, try to make sure that when you leave, you don't get sandwiched by the Sea Wanderers.

Upon noticing you, he ambles over to chat.

You quickly inform Kujura of what transpired, and he nods before speaking again.

So you weren’t able to capture the woman as we’d hoped, but... Your efforts weren’t fruitless.”

The young man mutters some more and motions to his men to begin packing their things.

I’ve discovered something too. We should compare notes before resuming the hunt afresh.

Though your mission is not quite complete, Kujura seems to think you should report to the Senatus.

You reflect that it would be best to follow their lead in order to report to the Senatus.

Now you can go back to town.

Thanks to you, I made it out alive. I think you deserve this as thanks. The sentry presents you with a bag, which you humbly accept along with the sentry’s thanks. The sentry wishes you luck with your investigation before returning to his post.

You get this if you gave him a Medica II. If you gave him a Medica or had your Monk heal him, then you would get a Medica II.

Time to hand in our report, even though we failed.

Um... Yes. My apologies for our failure.

But then, Kujura tells me that the danger was such that the sentry team was decimated. Moreover, the information you brought us along with our own may open the way to the Deep City. The time may be ripe to issue a mission to find the Deep City and fulfill my long-dreamt-of wish. ...And that’s where we stand. The woman escaped, but it wasn’t a total loss. We have you to thank. I’ll need that Sea Bead you said you were given, in exchange for your reward.

We accept.

As I thought, Guild Tidehunt... I assumed you’d be the ones to accept this mission. That Sea Bead you retrieved... Apparently, it can control the currents within the Labyrinth. Kujura and the sentries say they found a suspicious spot. Kujura! Explain your findings to them.

One of the men found something unusual surrounded by the current. I checked it myself. There was a vertically flowing whirlpool. I got the sense it was artificial, not natural. There was also a pedestal that would have supported something about that Sea Bead’s size. ...You may be holding the key to further progress. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must be off to visit the wounded.

If it indeed unlocks a path ahead, there’s no need to check in with us first. Find the Deep City! ...Be very careful, though. This mission will be much more perilous than the previous ones. But we won’t find the location of that Deep City unless we continue to press forward. Let nothing bar your path to the Deep City, and come to me for your reward when you succeed!

We COULD advance the plot, but I think now would be a good time to prepare for the next set of Sea Quests. Which we'll do in the next update.
