Update 59: Kirin

Video: Kirin

I really insist that you watch the video before reading on. Trust me, it's better to watch the whole thing in motion.

Okay, time to fight the boss.

I don't want Rose dying on me, so I'll have her put up an Indomitable. And use Berserker Vow to boost her attack power.

Charlotte will debuff Kirin's physical defense to amplify our damage even more.

I'll have Cassidy open up with Charge Tactic and also use Eagle Eye

Faye is gonna power up Rose with a Bravant.

And Bobson will... also use Eagle Eye. Not much for him to do really.

Okay now, ya'll ready for this? CAUSE IT'S GO TIME!

Invincibility!

Mmhmm mmhmm, I see that big honking weak spot there! Can't hide anything from me!

How amateurish. That spot is much more vulnerable than the one you're looking at!

Actually, I believe that's a better spot.

Ripped and ready!

Uh, here's the protein drink you asked for.

Oh, thanks. I feel even stronger already!

It is time to unleash destruction.

Focus!

Have at you!

Time for a smackdown!

Rose just dealt a total of 4691 damage. That's over a 3rd of Kirin's HP. All because Bobson smacked it a few times. Oh but it doesn't stop there!

My turn, hons!

Hmph. Is that all?

Aw shut it gramps, I did my best!

Follow my lead.

Ha! It'll take more than that to-

Sorry Rose, but I'm taking this kill!

Uhhh, okay then?

Well. That was easy.

GEEEEEEEEET DUNKED ON!

Oh Charlotte, you're so cool, and awesome, and I lo-

Oh come on! That is SO not what happened!

Yeah, what the hell!? I was in the middle of telling an awesome story, and you just had to interrupt me with all that! And that was supposed to be MY LINE! It doesn't sound anywhere as good coming from you!

This again? Really?

Well sorry, but I couldn't think of anything else to say. And your story was awful. It was too brutal and lacked... elegance. You hit the lightning beast over and over until it died. How does that make for a good story!?

Tch! It's more exciting than, oh I killed the damn thing in one hit, aren't I so cool blah blah blah!

Girls. Guys. Girls. Calm down, and let me tell the real story. Instead of the BULL HONKEY you were throwing at all these people! Okay, let me start at the beginning.

You didn't think I would actually just cheese the boss like that, did you? Nah, Warrior Might is ridiculously overpowered. That's probably the only time you'll see me annihilate a boss with it. The strategy is pretty much the same for every boss fight. Set up on the first turn, annihilate it on the second turn. It even scales well in the post-game, and can utterly destroy almost every single boss there in 2 turns. If you do want to make use of it, be my guest, but I won't be doing that in this LP. The game is easy enough as it is.

Unihorns dispels debuffs on your party, which sounds nice, except that enemies don't debuff your party that often in this game, and in most cases, they aren't that devastating.

The Flame, Frost, and Storm Jars all deal 70% TEC damage to all enemies. They're stronger than the Zodiac's Binary skills in that regard.

Nectar IIs are very strong revival items, since they revive party members at 100 HP instead of 20. I'll make sure to stock up on these from now on.

Urrgghh...

Can we please never do that again?

Yes. No offense, Sir Faye, but I'm a warrior, not a farmer. I'm sure Alice could have done a better job of gathering than us.

EXCUSE ME!? Alice works very hard to provide for our guild, and you're saying that you wanted her to work even more just because you had to go buy that-

Um. It's okay, Faye. I don't mind gathering more materials. That's my job, remember?

...Darn it Alice, I was in the middle of guilt tripping them!

Anyways, onto the actual fight. This was the party that was voted on to fight the boss.

Unfortunately, this happened on the way down.

MEDIC!

I'm a Monk, thank you very much.

So that spot where we needed a party member with high STR? Well we got a few of those now, so let's try lifting that thing up.

You crouch and take hold of the stones, grit your teeth, and pull with all your strength! Despite the stone’s tremendous weight, you succeed in lifting the tiles! Below the stone floor, you find a species of vine that will be useful as materials. You pluck the vines and stow them into your pack before leaving.

Okay, now let's do this for real. Here's my setup.

Standing before the device are two figures you know well: the Abyssal King and Olympia. Upon noticing your presence, they turn to face you. The Abyssal King speaks slowly...

If they will not act, I will slay that evil myself. Armoroad is my native land, after all...

Wha? Hey! What do you mean by that!?

A flash of white.

It’s clear that he must have used the teleportation device to make his escape to another area...

Behind you!

...Tidehunt. You threaten the Abyssal King’s plan. He harbors no enmity toward humans. But I am different. All threats must be eliminated...

Oh, I've been waiting for this.

A dreadful blade extends from her inhuman form and she slowly approaches, eyes locked on you... As you cautiously watch Olympia’s movements, a familiar voice echoes from behind.

...How long were you standing there?

You aren’t sure how long Kujura has stood behind you, but his katana is drawn. He glances at you...

You go on ahead. We can’t allow the Abyssal King to reach the Princess. And I have a score to settle with this thing... It took the lives of many sentries in the 2nd Stratum.

Fine. Just make sure to give her a good beatdown for me, k?

You nod your assent to his claim, and Olympia steps forth.

The girl’s voice is even and calm as she begins playing an eerie, shrill melody.

Come to me, beast clad in the lightning!

A flash of white.

You can see no other way forward but to fell the creature! Draw your weapons and slay the enemy standing before you!

Hmph. I don't think it'll just let us pass by

Then we'll just beat the stuffing out of it, like we always do!

Kirin isn't too bad if you're prepared and know what to do. If not, well he can be a pretty rough fight.

I made a mistake and had Cassandra attack instead of using Bunshin.

Let's get some damage going.

Rose still has Warrior Might, but I'm not gonna go and abuse the whole buff stacking thing. Also we don't have the party of Shoguns here, so its damage output would be pretty low anyway.

Gonna get Protect Order going.

Charlotte doesn't have any damage skills, so she's just a support, and fuel for Warrior Might.

...What the hell was that?

Ha! That was pathetic! Must be a real weakling. Is that all ya had to throw at us, Olympia!?

I doubt she would have had this thing attack us if she didn't think it was capable of taking us down. Don't let your guard down.

Retribution's attack power isn't a typo, it actually is that low.

Your defenses are meaningless to us.

ARP AROOO!

Just lowering Kirin's defenses.

I got your backs!

Certainly seems tough.

Ya didn't hit him hard enough. Here, let me show you how its done!

Well at least I actually managed to hit him.

Well I just wasted a bunch of TP.

Also Protect Order's healing power is insane now.

Fortunately I actually remembered to use Bunshin this time.

Just gonna have Rose attack since using Warrior Might on a turn where the party isn't happening is just a big waste of TP.

Unfortunately, I forgot that Kirin doesn't have access to ailments. Only binds, so this does absolutely nothing.

Vaccinated?

You sure that's gonna help?

To be honest, I don't really know.

Ow ow ow. Okay, maybe he's not that weak.

Kirin will mostly stick to using his physicals and trying to bind your party. Though the chances for that happening are pretty low.

Hya!

Some assistance, please!

Greetings.

This one's gonna be a scorcher!

Probably should have had Rose relearn Blade Rave so that Warrior Might isn't the only offensive skill she has. I'll respec her after the battle.

May as well provide some ammo for it while I'm at it.

Ready when you are!

Now Rose! Just like we practiced!

Slice and dice!

Uh huh. That katana is sure looking like a good use of our money.

Sh-shut up! That thing is just moving around too much!

Maybe ya need to take some aiming lessons from yours truly!

I think that would make her aim worse.

Hey! That was just a fluke!

We strike!

See? Hit my mark!

Which is more than I can say for her!

Grrr...

Unfortunately one of the Gladiator's main weaknesses is that their stat spread causes them to have a low hit rate. If you're trying to make use of Warrior Might, it's probably better to outfit everyone with equipment that boosts their hit rate. That would increase WM's damage far more than STR boosting equipment. If all those hits connected, Rose could have dealt around 3000 damage instead of 1504. Arbalists do have the same problem, but they have a passive that can negate that issue.

Gonna have both Cassandras use Line Guard to protect the team from another physical.

Unfortunately, Front Mortar is really draining Sidney's TP. This is also another reason why Charge is broken in this game. Not only does it increase a character's overall damage output, it is insanely cost efficient and lets offensive classes deal way more damage without using up as much TP as just casting the same skills over and over.

I'll protect you all!

Nrgh. Can't break free...

Oh no, that's not good. So Kirin's physicals all have a low chance of inflicting a bind, so that component of those skills aren't too much to worry about. But if anyone gets bound, dispel them as soon as possible! You'll see why in a bit.

Warrior Might uses the legs, but it'll do half damage as long as Rose has her arms bound.

Rose isn't in danger right now, so I don't have to use Unbind right away, but better safe than sorry.

Pfft, that again?

What the hell!? It wasn't hitting as hard when he used that attack before!

I did say to not let your guards down.

Ouch! Son of a- Ahem. Ah yes, I believe I read about those beasts before. It seems the more Kirin is wounded, the harder that attack hits.

That would have been nice to know before!

M-my apologies.

Okay, so Retribution is one of the main skills to look out for in the fight. It does actually deal 2% TEC damage. However, the game makes an adjustment to the damage formula for this skill to ensure that the damage scales as Kirin loses HP. After the base damage is calculated, but before the random number from 1 to 10 is added on, a multiplier ranging from 0 to 100 (The number used is how much HP% Kirin is missing) is applied to the damage, making it far more dangerous as the fight goes on. The saving grace about this skill is that Kirin will always use it on the 1st turn of the fight, and every 5th turn. Kirin will never deviate from that, so if you have a Hoplite with a max level Antifire, use that skill on those turns. If not, make sure to put up a Fire Mist before he casts Retribution

Oh and funnily enough, since the multiplier is applied after the numbers are run through the damage formula, it's entirely possible for the skill to never deal any significant damage to a character if their TEC and armor defense is high enough to lower Retribution's base damage to 0. After all, 100 times 0 is still 0.

You're free!

Sweet! Thanks!

May as well give my party a free turn.

Guard us well.

You go first.

Ka-BOOM!

Some more nice damage.

Kirin has lost over half his HP.

MMPH MMMMMPH!

Uh-oh.

Just in case I can't unbind Charlotte in time, this should protect her from being obliterated.

Once Kirin drops below 76% of his HP, dispel any binds on your party ASAP!

Insulation!

That skill is why. Once Kirin drops below 76% of his HP, he'll start using that whenever at least one of your party members get bound.

Divine Wrath: Uses the Head. Deals 40% Volt damage to the entire party. Has an accuracy of 120. Has an action speed of +0. Damage scales depending on how many binds the targets have. Dispels all binds on the targets after dealing damage.

Divine Wrath on its own isn't that dangerous, but Kirin will rarely cast it if none of your party members are bound. However, that changes if a character has any binds on them. For characters that don't have any binds, they'll only be hit for 40% TEC damage. However, the skill does have a 1x multiplier attached to it. Each bind on a character adds a value of 2 to the multiplier. Divine Wrath will deal 3 times the damage on characters with 1 bind, 5 times on characters with 2 binds, and 7 times on fully bound targets.

Now it might seem simple to avoid taking the extra damage, since Kirin's physicals have a low infliction rate. Except once Kirin drops below 51% of his HP, he throws in another move. (which he didn't get to use in this fight.)

Imperial Pride: Does not use a body part. Counter skill. If the user is attacked with physical or elemental damage, this skill will activate and attempts to bind the target's Head, Arms, and Legs all at once with an 80% success rate. Has an action speed of +30.

Yeah that skill is pretty nasty, and if it happens to fully bind a target, Kirin is pretty much guaranteed to cast Divine Wrath on the next turn, (unless the next turn is a multiple of 5) killing everyone that was unfortunate enough to be bound. There are ways to get around it. Once Kirin drops below 51%, you can use the Regroup Tactic Limit to instantly recover from the binds for 5 turns. Or just have a fast character use a Therica A on your most important party members. If you have a Hoplite with a high level Antivolt, you can have them cast that on the turn immediately after to reduce or nullify Divine Wrath's damage. They aren't great damage dealers, so they shouldn't be attacking at all during the fight, unless you want to risk them getting tagged by Imperial Pride for some reason. This fight is pretty much Ketos 2.0. in that it punishes you for being tagged with binds for too long. Just make sure to keep your party healthy at all times, and you should be fine. That should be your number one priority.

Lemme just get that off...

Phew! It was hard to breathe with that in the way. My thanks, Sir Faye.

Once Kirin drops below 26%, he'll get more aggressive and attempt to use the Imperial Pride + Divine Wrath combo a lot more often.

Hee hee hee! Ready for another round of explo-

THE BATTLEFIELD WILL RUN RED WITH YOUR BLOOD!

Killstealer!

But that doesn't matter, since Charlotte decided that the battle was running on long enough.

The basic gist of the battle is to apply Fire protection every 5 turns, and make sure that your party stays unbound the entire time. If you can manage that, the battle isn't too bad. If not, Kirin can be a bit rough.

Geh... I'm quite spent after all that.

Man, that thing took a while to take down, huh?

Behind you, you can hear pants and heaves from the two evenly matched combatants.

Yeah. So you might as well just give up now!

The girl who was battling Kujura seems to have realized her weakened position.

...You leave me no choice.

She says quietly, as a bright flash blinds you!

GAH!

Really!? She was right there, and we just let her get away!

Kujura slowly approaches as you scan the area, finding nothing. His movements are weak and halting from the fierce battle... He seems to be in great pain.

...They must be stopped. But first, the Senatus needs to know that the device was activated.

Kujura issues you a key with his order to report back.

And take this. That woman dropped it, which means it may be useful in some way.

And now we can finally open those moon doors.

Thanks but, you sure you're okay? You look like a mess, man.

...I’ll be along once I’ve rested a little. Don’t worry about me, just go.

Affirmative. Stay safe, Sir Kujura.

Your options are to do as Kujura says and report to the Senatus, or check the teleportation device.

We can talk to him again, but he doesn't have much to say.

And we're done with this floor and the 4th Stratum!

So this is the teleporter.

Shall we see where it leads?

Whoa. It's like everything is made of those fancy Chinese dishes and stuff.

I've never been here myself, but it is as beautiful as I was told.

I never thought I would ever be visiting a place like this. Hmmhmm. Perhaps getting dragged into all this was a good thing after all.

I'm almost afraid to fire off anything in here. Who knows if this entire place will break or something?

Welcome to the Porcelain Forest. We're not even in the Yggdrasil Labyrinth anymore (though the game still counts this as the 5th Stratum.) I don't really think that highly of EO3's aesthetics, but I do have to say this is the best looking Stratum in this game. Oh, and take a listen to the music, it's a great track.

When you touch it, you receive a mild shock and jump back. There seems to be no way past...

OW! Hey, what gives!?

Ah, yes. Certain people aren't authorized to enter the royal forest. I believe only Armoroad Royalty can venture in further.

Then what are we supposed to do?

We'll probably have to talk to Senator Flowdia. Considering the circumstances, I'm sure she'll make an exception for us.

Perhaps the Senatus would have some idea as to how to pass this strange barrier.

No choice but to go back for now.

I told you I saw Princess Gutrune the other day, right?

Uh huh?

Well, later I heard that some bad guys went into the royal forest looking for her! But I hear they asked you guys to go protect her, since you’re so good. Don’t let her down, okay?

Hee hee, don't you worry! We won't!

Maybe listening to a 10 year old wasn't the best idea.

Now I’m left with 100 production models... What to do with them? This won’t look good on the books. The real shame is that it wasn’t a bad idea. I thought for sure the rollers... Hm...! Hear me out! If these were worn on the feet, your speed in the Labyrinth would be... No?

Uhhh, no thanks, lady.

Selling the Blue Scale unlocks the Book of Law, which increases a character's TP pool by 20% when equipped. It doesn't provide a TEC increase, so I don't really bother with it. Asteria doesn't have that big of a TP problem.

Is that...?

There’s this thing called an abacus used for back massages! You roll it on your back, and... Ahhhhhhhhh, that’s nice. It really relaxes my muscles from a hard day of work. The girl at Napier’s Firm sold it to me! Isn’t it so cool? She said this would be a big seller, so if you want one, you’d better get it quick!

We'll... keep that in mind.

Hey, you got a minute? See, I was paired up with this monk the other day. I like a man in glasses! He was a real icono... ico... A unique guy! I think guys who do things their own way are great! Anyway, he tells me that monsters called Petaloids appear on B17F in the day, so we should go at night. I was like, omigosh, is he making a pass at me!? But so we leave for the Labyrinth, okay? And guess what happens? No sign of those Petal-things, but this freaky volty fox thing shows up! So I decided know-it-all jerks who act all superior are useless. Give me a wild, passionate guy!

I... see...

I guess that would be nice to know if we want to avoid those Petaloid things.

...Nerona finally coaxed me into going to the Porcelain Forest... Maps seem so useless there... ...And... In truth... It’s too bright there... I wish I could hide my eyes for even a second...

Okay, I really don't like the sound of that.

Let's check out the quests.

Another contest from that guy? Heh, so what's this one about?

Ah, you guys! That is another request from that Elval fellow. He has way too much money! He sent this request out only to guilds that showed potential in his contest the other day. It is another contest, but he wants you to collect stuff. Talk to the guard in the plaza. Well, go see what all the fussing is about, okay?

Well if the Senatus is making a request, we better get it done.

Welcoming! The Senatus has another job about making reports. It seems they want to know what materials you can find in the Labyrinth. All you have to do is go to the Senatus and make your reports. Anybody could do it! Go talk to the granny at the Senatus for more details. Now get a move on, explorers!

Invitations to this contest were only sent to guilds who performed well in the last one. Mr. Elval’s request is that you compete to collect as many materials as you can. The contest will take place on the Fourth Stratum. Your skills in harvesting will be tested. There is no time limit for this contest. Come back with at least 5 items to qualify. Your entry will not begin until you reach B13F, and you must stay on the Fourth Stratum. If you leave the Fourth Stratum without collecting 5 items, you will be disqualified. That’s it for the rules. We look forward to seeing the fruits of your efforts!

Wait, a gathering contest? Really?

I think I'll pass. I had enough of that earlier today.

A young group’s been half wiped out in the Second Stratum. I was just doing the after-action. It doesn’t matter to me where or how you explorers die. You knew the risks when you signed up. Just... try not to die when you’re under my care. The paperwork’s a real bitch.

Duly noted.

...Well, it finally came in. Your ship should be pretty comfortable now.

And with this, we can now explore the rest of the ocean. Let's see what he has to say normally.

At times like this, look to the sea. Its unchanging waters ease one’s heart and restore one’s resolve.

Your quota is 130 items. If you feel that you don’t have enough, go gather more. Once you’ve registered that many, come speak with me again to complete the request.

Incidentally, if you're on the Deep City route, this quest has different dialogue. You would be reporting to a regular guard instead of Flowdia since she considers you traitors there. Anyways, I register my entries. You should have more than 130 entries at this point.

Artisans in Armoroad will now be able to refer to this list when developing new weapons. This is ultimately for your benefit, you know. It’s your duty to make regular reports. Thank you for your contributions to Armoroad’s future. Your reward has been left at the bar.

Anyways, let's report in.

Yeah, sorry. We were kind of too late to stop them.

The Abyssal King and his lackey have used it... The Princess rests in that forest. We must act. And... Oh, but of course! You’ll lend a hand, I trust? If the Abyssal King were to confront the Princess... I haven’t lived 100 years to allow that. Much rests on you. I need your help to protect our dear, sweet Princess!

Ah yes, there’s still the matter of your reward. Hurry, take it... There isn’t much time.

Alright, so what do you want us to do?

It seems a force from the Deep City has invaded the Porcelain Forest I mentioned once before. The best way to guard the Princess would be to evacuate her... but we have our reasons for not doing so. Yet if by chance these invaders should stumble upon the Princess and they came to blows...!

Yeah, that would probably be bad.

You grasp the situation, I trust. I do not want His Majesty and the Princess at it tooth and nail! Here, take this. You’ll need it to pass the forest’s barrier. Take it into the forest and stop the Abyssal King!

Now we can properly explore the 5th Stratum. Let's see what Flowdia has to say normally.

Your guild is the first exception. Take care not to desecrate the forest during your travels.

I actually remembered to spend my skill points this time. Provoke now has a maximum aggro value of 6.

Double Action now has a 12% chance of activating.

Put a skill point into Sword Mastery, but it doesn't matter. I'm reverting Rose's skillset back to her old one since I have no intention to abuse Warrior Might.

Form Qi now provides a 55% bonus to healing.

Katana Mastery now provides a 3% boost to regular attacks.

Oh, and now let's hand in our quest report since we got that done.

You make your reports about the items, yet? One of the guards mentioned that. This is the reward from the Senatus. Here you go! Please take it with our thanks. Why not take a break from the adventuring and read your Item Compendium for a while? You might learn something new! ...Well, until next time, keep up the good working!

Curse is a really terrible ailment to use, so I won't be making much use of this.

Double Action has a 14% activation rate at level 3.

...How'd you figure that out?

Olympia told me you turned down the Abyssal King’s request... Honestly? I’m disappointed you can’t see the wisdom of what he’s asking you.

And for some reason, that's what she says for the next few floors, so I won't be showing off what she says for a while.

By the way, what do you all think of the Deep City?

It's certainly an interesting place. I just wish we didn't get have to get caught up in such a big mess.

Well, I guess we see eye to eye there. I’ve finally started to appreciate this city. At first, I was so bored I thought about running away, but now I don’t think it’s so bad. Should I settle down here...? If I do, maybe I could marry a rich man of the Deep City...

Hm?

...Oh, no, it’s nothing. I’m just thinking out loud.

To be honest, not really.

Oh... What a shame. Personally, I’m only just starting to appreciate it. I’ll still return to Armoroad someday, of course, but I hope we can still be friends.

You shouldn’t be wasting time here. Go where you’re needed.
