Update 63: The Moon Doors

Weird little fella, ain't he?

I'm a good girl with a gun!

Actually, you're a crazy girl, with no gun.

Hey, give that back!

I remember to spend the skill points I gained from the last update. I'll have Susan put points into Gun Mastery so I can unlock Swashbuckling for her.

Call Bird now has a 35% chance to inflict head bind with its attacks, deals 100% damage on its initial attack, and 90% damage on its AI attacks. It also has a base HP of 60. Okay, now that I've handled that bit of business...

I'm switching back to the team that fought Kirin for this update.

We're mainly gonna be covering the Moon doors in this update.

Hee hee, thanks for the key, Olympia!

The Formaldehyde is nice.

The Hamao II much less so. This room contains random encounters from the secret area on the 1st floor. Nothing interesting here.

But we've now completed the first floor. There's nothing more for us here.

The 4th floor has another Moon Door, and there's a lot more to cover here.

It's been a while since we heard that battle theme, huh? Anyways, most of the encounters here have the same monsters as what you'll see on the 4th floor, though all of them contain a new enemy.

Huh, a butterfly. Interesting, I guess.

You know, those butterflies look just like the ones that hang... around... Fang... Uh oh.

Guuhhh... My stummy hurts...

He just literally vomited his guts out!

K-KILL IT NOW!

Venomfly
Level: 44
HP: 411
STR: 41
VIT: 40
AGI: 39
LUC: 39
TEC: 41
Attack Type: Pierce
Exp: 2465
Item Drops:
-Drop 1: Butterfly Wing - 30% Drop Rate. 1 needed for Naien (Crossbow.)
--Iridescent wing with a mysterious shine.
-Drop 2: N/A
-Gold: Scales - Kill with Volt. 80% Drop Rate. 1 needed for Leg Eater (Gun.)
--Gained from a Labyrinth butterfly. Highly flammable.
Description: A poisonous butterfly found throughout the world. It is especially hated by explorers.
Damage Resistances: Slash: 100% Strike: 100% Pierce: 100% Fire: 150% Ice: 100% Volt: 100%
Ailment Resistances: Sleep: 100% Confusion: 150% Plague: 10% Poison: 10% Blind: 100% Curse: 100% Paralysis: 100%
Bind Resistances: Head: 100% Arm: 100% Leg: 100%
Other Resistances: Death: 100% Petrification: 100% Stun: 100%

Skills:

Poison: Uses the Head. Attempts to inflict Poison on a single target, and has a 80% success rate. Deals 350 Poison damage. Has an action speed of -6.

Did you think you would go a whole game without meeting one of these? It's the only new enemy in this area, but a very dangerous one. That description is pretty apt, as Venomflies are a recurring enemy in the series, and they are pretty hated. At the point they show up in the games, their Poison is a huge pain to deal with. You want to end any battles with Venomflies in them fast, since the Poison is strong enough to nearly kill or outright kill your party members.

You're NOT touching any of us!

Not happening.

Of course if you have a way to deal with ailments, Venomflies aren't too bad.

My next shot will find its mark.

Eghh... Come on stomach. Just hold out for a little longer...

Bug zapped!

And that was enough to net me both the Venomfly's regular drop and its conditional one.

GET THAT THING AWAY FROM ME!

H-ha ha. L-look at big bad S-Sid, all scared of a b-butterfly!

You're one to talk! I see you quaking in your shoes too!

All the encounters here have Venomflies in them. Honestly at this point in the game, you have so many options available to deal with them. Venomflies are pretty hated in the previous games because they were one of the toughest enemies to deal with, and they were encountered very early on. Likely way before your party was even prepared to deal with them. But in this game? Your party should have a ton of skills to deal with them easily.

...This is gonna hurt.

Pain! Pain! So much pain!

Man, I can't believe Fang managed to befriend one of those.

Of course that doesn't mean you're allowed to be careless.

Nothing over here.

Hey, isn't that an elephant from the 3rd Stratum?

But this one looks to be far bigger than those. Stay on your guard.

The FOE in question walks along that path. Wait until it's to the right of the mud tiles before attempting to slip through.

Of course I opt to take it out.

Calamity God
Behavior: Patrols a set path.
Aggressive: No
Level: 55
HP: 4140
STR: 57
VIT: 56
AGI: 41
LUC: 42
TEC: 48
Attack Type: Pierce
Exp: 7430
Item Drops:
-Drop 1: Strong Fang - 60% Drop Rate. 1 needed for Pavis (Shield. Must be restocked.)
--Rare, extremely strong fang that’s easy to work with.
-Drop 2: N/A
-Gold: N/A
Description: An elephant monster used to even harsher areas. Its charge mows down all in its path.
Damage Resistances: Slash: 100% Strike: 50% Pierce: 50% Fire: 50% Ice: 100% Volt: 100%
Ailment Resistances: Sleep: 10% Confusion: 50% Plague: 10% Poison: 10% Blind: 10% Curse: 10% Paralysis: 50%
Bind Resistances: Head: 25% Arm: 25% Leg: 25%
Other Resistances: Death: 10% Petrification: 10% Stun: 50%

Skills:

Withering Glare: Uses the Head. Lowers the physical defenses of the entire party by 40% for 4 turns. Has an action speed of +3.
Charge In: Uses the Legs. Deals 110% Strike damage to the entire party. Has an accuracy of 99. Has an action speed of -5.

Calamity Gods are far stronger versions of Cave Elephants. Don't take them lightly, as they hit very hard and are very durable, so they take a while to kill.

I'm not risking having my physical attackers use Berserker Vow, mainly because the Calamity God hits really hard and has access to an AOE.

I will however, make use of Charge Tactic instead.

And Guard Order since the Calamity God can lower our defenses.

And Line Guard since we need all the defense we can get.

March ahead...

And fear nothing!

Even with all those defensive boosts, the Calamity God still hits hard.

RRRRAAAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!

Aaand I just lost my hearing.

Time to go on the offensive.

One, two, three!

...Not my best work.

Unfortunately, 5-Ring Sword is an unreliable damage skill. Sure it has the potential to deal a high amount of damage, but it also has the potential to deal a low amount of damage as well. At the very least, it doesn't have Nine Smashes' accuracy problems, so it's easier to work with.

That's a thick hide.

That Pierce resistance makes Sidney's job a lot harder.

Gladiator.png.

Cut you open, split you into two, and sliced out your guts!

Though in this case, it was enough to finish off the FOE.

I've located a hidden passage!

Behold, intersecting corners.

Also treasure.

Rough and tough!

I give it to Sidney since he has the lowest VIT, and needs to be on the front row for Front Mortar shenanigans.

Here's another Calamity God. Avoiding it is pretty easy.

Just make sure you're right next to it, then walk into the mud tile, so it'll walk past you.

And if we want to come back here, we can now skip past all that.

Another hidden passage.

A very nice find!

Madora IIs heal 300 HP to one row, but they're a post-game item. They're pretty handy.

Now that we're at the end of this secret area, something must await us.

What gives!? There's nothing here!

After all that, we get bupkis? What a ripoff!

Well, you know the saying about journeys and destinations.

There are a few other doors with those Moon symbols. Perhaps we can investigate those?

And we're completely done with this floor. A few nice items, but nothing much to see overall. I went back to sell my stuff to Edie.

The Leg Eater gives a character a 12% chance to inflict Leg binds with their regular attacks. I guess it's decent, and this is the point where Guns start to catch up to the Jolly Roger.

This can serve as a nice upgrade for your Arbalists.

This shield was unlocked by selling the Calamity God's drop. Like with all pieces of armor, don't upgrade unless this provides a huge boost in defense from what you're currently wearing.

There was another Moon Door in the 2nd Stratum. Let's go check that out.

On the way there, I set up camp.

Hey Charlotte. Mind telling me what the heck THIS is!? And what's that little comment below me supposed to mean!?

Thanks to user Ragnar Homsar for drawing this.

...Wha!? How did you-!? Ngh... First of all, give that back. Secondly, it's difficult to find someone who could be a good match for you.

And just what do you mean by THAT?

You're too... brash. And you don't really think things through. And you're too excitable. And-

Yeah yeah, whatever. Hey, are you sure these two would be a good match for each other? I mean I'm pretty sure Rose-

Huh? Hey, let me take a look at that... Why the hell are you setting me up with OLYMPIA!?

...You do realize that Asteria is 32, right?

...Why am I not in here!?

Man, is this what you've been writing in your journal all this time? And here I was thinking you were writing stuff like battle plans and all that. Ooh! Hey everyone, take a look at this!

...Faye. Allow me to educate you on the consequences of looking through other people's private and innermost thoughts.

Huh? What's are you-OWOWOW LEGGO OF MY HAAAAAIIIIIR!

And give me back my journal! Sheesh.

You know what, let's just never talk about this again.

Fine. And Alice would so be better off with-

That's not dropping the subject.

Here's the moon door.

Open sesame!

And now we're completely done with this floor, though there wasn't much to explore.

Where does this lead?

I immediately regret my decision.

RUN!

Yikes! It just lept up to us!

Oh yeah, here's this FOE's gimmick. It can move 2 tiles at a time. And they don't start moving until you get into their line of sight.

Here's this FOE's patrol path. Fortunately, it isn't aggressive.

Wait until it's past this shortcut to slip past them.

Lets you put critical hit forges on your weapons. Considering that they only apply to regular attacks, those forges are useless!

There's a one way passage here if you want to slip out.

I opt for murder instead.

Sea Berserker
Behavior: Waits until the party gets in their line of sight. Afterward, they walk forward one tile, and then walk forward two tiles.
Aggressive: No
Level: 55
HP: 4220
STR: 56
VIT: 56
AGI: 37
LUC: 47
TEC: 48
Attack Type: Strike
Exp: 7390
Item Drops:
-Drop 1: Metallic Fur - 50% Drop Rate. 1 needed for Heavy Armor (Heavy Armor. Must be restocked.)
--Hardened blue fur that once belonged to a beast.
-Drop 2: N/A
-Gold: N/A
Description: A dangerous sea beast that lulls its prey with its lullaby-like cries before killing them.
Damage Resistances: Slash: 50% Strike: 50% Pierce: 100% Fire: 100% Ice: 50% Volt: 100%
Ailment Resistances: Sleep: 10% Confusion: 50% Plague: 10% Poison: 10% Blind: 50% Curse: 10% Paralysis: 20%
Bind Resistances: Head: 25% Arm: 25% Leg: 25%
Other Resistances: Death: 10% Petrification: 10% Stun: 10%

Skills:

Lullaby of Rest: Uses the Head. Attempts to inflict Sleep on the entire party, and has a 30% chance of succeeding. Has an action speed of -5.
Ruin Fangs: Uses the Head. A single target Slash attack that deals 75% damage and attacks the target twice. Has an accuracy of 90. Has an action speed of -6.

Sea Berserkers are stronger versions of High Walruses with one key difference. They know how to sing. Lullaby of Rest is a really deadly skill since it can disable your entire party, leaving the Sea Berserker free to munch on your party members. They're also really durable, so they'll take a while to take down.

Slice and dice and dice and slice!

And this is 5-Ring Sword hitting 10 times. Too bad the Sea Berserker is resistant to Slash attacks.

Well that was a rude awakening.

Bah.

Boom! There it goes!

Honestly the FOEs in the secret areas aren't too interesting since they're just stronger versions of enemies we've fought, and they're kind of damage sponges for weaker parties. Just stay on top of your game, and you can handle them. Oh, and since I didn't get the drop, I have to fight another one of those.

Another Sea Berserker.

Here's its patrol path. Hide out in that side path, and then slip past it.

I would have just walked past it, but I wanted its drop.

I put more levels in Berserker Vow for Rose.

For the record, the random encounters in this secret area don't contain any new enemies. The Sea Berserker is the only new monster here.

Another Sea Berserker and its patrol path. Once again, hide out in the side path, and slip past it when the coast is clear.

And here's another Sea Berserker.

This next bit should probably be watched in video form.

Okay, so I try to be clever and slip into that 2nd alcove there. Except I realize that this isn't gonna work out, since walking forward now would result in a battle.

So I try to go back and then realize that I'm getting into a battle because of my stupidity.

So I think to myself, no problem, I'll just escape! I mean the escape rates are normally skewed in the player's favor if their characters AGI stats are high enough.

Get your butts moving!

I'm trying, but that thing's too fast!

Except then I realize, oh wait, this is a party full of slow people. So escaping in this case will take a while.

Especially considering that it can just put the party all to sleep.

Let go! Let go. Let...

A soldier falls...

OW OW, Watch where you're biting!

This stupidity happens for a long time.

I see an escape route!

And I end up behind the FOE. At this point, I realized why FOEs can no longer share the same place with the player in the 3DS games. To prevent weird stuff like this from happening.

My brain was on autopilot at the time and I didn't notice that I was behind the FOE until it was too late.

Again? Really?

Leading to yet another stupid and avoidable death.

Run run run!

And then I realize I'm trapped.

Because the next time I step backwards, I'm gonna end up into another fight with absolutely no way to avoid it. This is a thing to watch out for in EO games, especially the DS ones, because in some cases, you can get corned by a bunch of FOEs, and just pinball between them with absolutely no way out. And that's another reason why the FOE system got changed in EO4, to prevent situations like that from happening again.

I'm really getting sick of being a walrus snack.

We're getting out of here!

And once again, I end up behind the FOE. Yes I made a really bad misplay here, but you saw that interacting with FOEs in this game can get really awkward at times. And it's why I can't really complain about the changes EO4 made to the whole system.

Anyways, I finally stop having a massive brain fart and finally get untangled from that whole mess.

Someone mind telling me what the hell just happened back there?

It seems like Faye tried to dance with a walrus, and as a result, it tried to have you all for a snack.

Eh heh heh, sorry. My sense of direction kind of took a hit for a moment there. W-won't happen again!

Anyways, the game switches things up here and has you duck into these one way passages in order to get past the Sea Berserkers.

And now we have a quick path back to this point if we want to revisit this area for some reason.

Another Sea Berserker.

And more one way passages to slip through.

This is the Sea Berserker's patrol path, and thankfully that's the last one we have to sneak past.

And we're at the end of this secret area.

Oh come on! Nothing again? Not even like a, I dunno, some big ol' monster to fight?

...Personally, I'm thankful that no such thing was waiting for us.

We're not actually done with the secret area yet, as there's a bit more to explore.

Back at this set of one way passages, there's another hidden path here.

A handy treasure awaits us.

Okay, I guess this trip wasn't a complete waste of time.

And here's the exit.

With that, we're completely done with the 5th floor! Though not much was in that secret area, Oh well.

Man, Olympia ripped us off! This key lead to like, nowhere!

Faye. We technically stole the key from her, remember?

Oh. Right, but still!

Are there any other Moon doors in this Labyrinth?

Well... There's one more door, but going beyond there would be a waste of ti-

Hey there's one more? What are we waiting for? Let's go!

Oh wait, but first...

The Heavy Armor is a slight downgrade from Cassandra's current armor in terms of defense, but it provides a 10% resistance to all physical attacks. The resistances are much more useful than an extra 5 points of defense, so I pick that up for her.

If you remember, there was one more place with a Moon Door in the 3rd Stratum. And that was where we first encountered the Deep Ones.

Faye. I really don't think it's a good idea to be here.

Look, I wasn't with you all when you came here, so sorry if I'm a little curious.

What's the harm? From what I'm seeing on the map, it's only a small room.

I think Cassie's a little scared of what's in the room. If he tries that trick again, I'll just blow em' up!

Yeah! We have Sid with us, so there's no need to worry!

Mmmm. Fine. But make it quick. I don't want to be in there for any longer than we need to.

The outwardly human, yet utterly alien, creature is there, staring at you as before.

The Eldest One turns its gaze haughtily from you. It seems it has nothing else to say. You decide to act in deference to the unnerving creature and leave this place.

The heck was that about?

I did say it would be a waste of time. Let's go, Faye. ...Faye?

...Huh. What a weird little fella. So, he's the prince of the Deep Ones?

I think that's what he called himself, yeah.

Hmm...

There's really not much point into coming back here. That was all the Moon Doors, and they didn't have much of note in them. Oh but before I end this update, there's one last order of business to take care of.

Remember, we reached floor 16, so that caused Gatekeeper to respawn.

Hey, what's the Gatekeeper doing here? I thought we took it out. Oh wait, it's a gho-

I believe Angie said that Yggdrasil could repair it. I guess it did just that.

Oh. So it's not a ghost?

Hmm... Hey, you all wanna trash it again?

Wh-You want to antagonize the Deep City even more!?

In case you haven't caught the memo, they're pretty much our enemies now. The Abyssal King and Olympia are trying to kill Princess Gutrune! That's practically a declaration of war! Sooo, what harm is a bit of vandalism gonna do, huh? It's not like we'll make things worse.

What about the Deep Ones? It is keeping them in the Abyssal Shrine. I think.

Couldn't Yggdrasil just repair it again? Besides, it's not like we saw any one of them trying to escape that place.

Ehh, sure why not? I'm itching for another fight with the thing!

I can't go for Gatekeeper's conditional drops right now, as I don't have anyone who can inflict binds in the party. So instead, I'm gonna go for Gatekeeper's regular drop, since we missed out on it last time.

I'm gonna try to kill Gatekeeper before it gets a chance to split off into Keeper Head and Keeper Body.

THE PAIN! THE PAAAAAIN! How do you even deal with this!?

Simple! Pain is power!

I think every bone in my body just broke.

Wimps.

And now I'm preparing for the attack. I'm also putting up an Aegis Defense, because despite the fact that this party is stronger than when they first fought Gatekeeper, Tenchi Souha Sho will still kill them, especially since my front liners lost some HP from Berserker Vow.

Do your worst.

Because it won't do a thing to us.

RRRRAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!

Whoa, where'd you learn to yell like-Uh I mean AAAAAAGGGGHHHH!

AAAHHHHH-Ow, my everything.

Goodbye, Gatekeeper.

CUTCUTCUTCUTCUTCUTCUTCUTCUTCUT!

Don't leave me out of the chopping party!

Ehh, cutting's not really my thing. Oh hey, it's dead.

And I got its normal drop.

Just showing that Gatekeeper itself counts as a separate monster.

Provoke now has a maximum aggro value of 8.

And we're done with everything in the Labyrinth for now. Let's go back and start preparing for the next Stratum.

Gatekeeper's normal drop unlocks this Club, which can be handy if you're using a Club Gladiator. There's nothing much of note about it.

Now why don't we see how the rest of the guild is doing?

Man, crazy how far we've come, huh?

Sidney has great single target damage, and some nice elemental AOEs at his disposal, making him a really good physical attacker with decent coverage. He's good for taking out random encounters and FOEs, but he has quite the TP problem and is a bit of a glass cannon.

Don't worry Princess Gutrune, we'll stop them from getting to you!

Rose is a very durable physical attacker and is a nice safe option to take along. However, she lacks elemental damage, and also has a big TP problem.

I can safely say that Senator Flowdia was right to trust in you, Guild Tidehunt.

Charlotte is a pretty big glass cannon and is kind of an RNG based physical attacker since her main damage skill is 5-Ring Sword. Her regular attacks are pretty decent for taking out random encounters thanks to Second Sword. Like most other physical attackers, she also has TP problems.

Man, can you believe we're almost at the bottom of the-wait a minute, we already reached the bottom! The Porcelain Forest is in Armoroad! Well, I can still be a hero, by protecting Gutrune!

Faye is our healing support, and is good at keeping the team alive and preventing ailments from hitting them and dispelling them, as there are lots enemies who will make use of ailments.

I suppose everything's about to end soon. But... why do I feel so uneasy?

So, do you want to steamroll the 5th Stratum? Then bring a Hoplite with a max level Antivolt. Lots of enemies, and an FOE makes use of Volt attacks, so you can pretty much render your party untouchable in a lot of battles with that skill. Cassandra has that skill, and she has quite the slew of defensive skills at her disposal.

I can't say that exploring the Labyrinth wasn't fun-er, an enjoyable experience.

Akatsuki has a bunch of crowd control techniques at his disposal, as he can dish out some decent damage and petrify enemies. Also thanks to Dark Ether, he can keep our party going for a long time in the Labyrinth.

I still can't believe we got caught up in such a big mess. Oh well, life's full of surprises, isn't it?

Asteria is our elemental attacker, and is good for taking out random encounters. And she doesn't really have any problems with her TP pool. She also has access to Meteor, so she has access to physical damage as well.

I wonder if I will be crowned queen of the Labyrinth after all this is done.

Susan is our buffing support, being able to increase our party's offenses and defenses, and can prevent them from being hit by ailments with Prevent Order. Not only that, Monarch March is also good for keeping our party topped off in between battles.

It's been smooth sailing, huh? I can't believe we've had an easier time in the Labyrinth than all those other guilds.

Scott is another physical attacker and deals a decent amount of damage. He can head bind enemies with Hanging, so he's got some utility. Eagle Eye also lets him boost the party's damage output. He's also agile, which is what he has over the other physical attackers.

I wonder if I'll meet any new friends down there.

Fang is our ailment specialist. His elephant is fantastic for dealing with random encounters, and he's the only character with access to all 3 binds. Primal Drums is a great way of boosting the party's damage output as well.

It's almost over, huh? Until then, I'll do my best!

Alice is our other crowd control specialist, being able to instantly kill enemies with ease, and can increase the amount of exp our party gains, making them stronger faster.

Vote for 3 party members you want to see explore the 5th Stratum. Votes must be in bold.

Only four floors left...

Until everything ends.
