Update 74: The Abyssal King and His Servant

Getting Knife Mastery to 10 increases his regular attack damage with Knives by 11%. It also unlocked a new skill for him.

There is strength in numbers.

Tagen Battou (Translation: Plural Sword) is a bit of an odd skill. For one thing, this skill has its own damage formula. Basically the Ninja attacks all enemies on the field with Slash damage a random amount of times. However, the damage greatly increases when the Ninja has clones out. The more clones they have, the greater the damage is dealt per hit. But if the Ninja has no clones out, a very pitiful amount of damage is dealt. Any existing clones rejoin with the Ninja, adding on their HP and TP pools to the casters'.

The damage formula for the skill is as follows:

If the Ninja has no clones when casting the skill, the skill power is equal to Base Power * 0.5 * Skill Multiplier.

If the Ninja has at least one clone when casting this skill, the skill power is equal to Base Power * 2^X * Skill Multiplier where X is equal to the number of cloned units on the field, capping out at 6.

If you're using a solo Ninja, and manage to cast Bunshin 5 times, you can multiply this skill's damage output by 64! Which is insane, but considering that you need to be running a solo Ninja to pull that off, it's not a very practical way to get through the game. At any rate, at level 2, the base power of the skill is 52%, and the Skill Multiplier is 101%. It's okay when your Ninja can get 1 clone out, but stick with Takanoha if you're 6th party slot is occupied by a different Bunshin user.

Anyways, let's get on with the final boss.

Here's my setup for this fight.

Ready to go?

I do wish we stocked up on more supplies, but aside from that, I'd say I'm ready to fend off a potential assault.

I hope it doesn't reach that point, but if I must, I'm ready.

Right, let's go.

...It seems you’ve made it. Well done, Tidehunt.

The old woman continues speaking, casting a worried glance around the forest as she does.

I took steps to transfer the Princess elsewhere before His Majesty arrived. Now, all you have to do is stop him when he gets... here...

...He's behind us, isn't he?

The old woman trails off as you begin to feel a terrible presence from behind.

What the heck are you going on about!?

The Abyssal King sighs deeply, taking worrisome steps toward you.

H-Hey! Calm down! There's no fish person around here!

The Abyssal King’s voice is calm as he stops before you and casts his sharp gaze about the room.

That... thing... you all hide... Where is the false, evil-ridden Princess?

The Abyssal King’s gaze moves from you to the old woman next to you. Her countenance desperate, the old woman clings to the Abyssal Lord and pleads with him.

...My lord! It is me, Flowdia! I have been the Princess’ lady in waiting these 100 years! Princess Gutrune has waited for you, yearned for you... She has sacrificed her humanity for you!

The Abyssal King only knits his brow in response and brushes the desperate woman’s hands away.

You are a stranger to me. I know neither you nor this Princess you speak of...

With these harsh words, the Abyssal King extends a large, sharp blade from his arm.

Again, where is the evil-ridden Princess? Tell me, or I’ll kill you and carve it from this crone!

I don't think we can reason with him anymore! He's gone completely nutso!

We don't want to do this, but you're not giving us any more options here.

Fine. I didn't expect diplomacy to work anyway.

Video: Automaton King and Olympia

Their Own Brand of Justice is by far my favorite final boss theme in the entire series. You really should give this one a listen. It's a very fitting track for all the final bosses in this game.

Out of all the final bosses in the game, the Automaton King and Olympia are generally agreed to be tougher than the Deep City's final boss. You have to deal with two enemies at once, which can easily overwhelm you if you aren't prepared.

Now before I go more into detail about them, there is one important thing I need to say. Kill Olympia first! And I'm not just saying that because she's a jerk that totally deserves it. If you kill the Automaton King first, this happens:

...Screw this, I'm not fighting all five of you by myself.

So you're giving up?

No.

That wasn't nice...

Cruelty blows up Olympia, so you don't have to fight her. Except...

Cruelty is also a suicide move, so you completely lose on the experience points she gives out and her item drop! And no, you can't get another copy of it or refight Olympia through normal means. You have to play through the entire game all over again to get another chance at her drop! Not only that, she actually has the more valuable drop of the two, since the Automaton King's drop just makes a sword that will eventually be outclassed, while Olympia's makes the Yggdroid's ultimate armor!

Let it be known that even to the very end, Olympia was a dick.

But Olympia only uses Cruelty if you kill the Abyssal King first. If you take her out first, that won't happen. Anyways, Automaton King is pretty much the heavy hitter. He's gonna be dealing most of the damage, while Olympia supports him. You should still take out Olympia first as she is capable of making both of them harder to kill, and can heal herself and the Automaton King.

I'm gonna get Protect Order going (though this was a misplay on my part, as I should have been just applying Attack Order throughout the fight instead.)

Cassandra will set up a clone.

Sidney will empower himself.

This fight is probably gonna take a while, so I want to cut down on my party's TP usage quite a bit.

Asteria will be chipping away at them with elemental damage.

You know, there is still time to back away from this.

Something tells me they don't want to do that.

We're gonna have to give it our all for this fight.

Leggo of me! Mmph mmph!

Oh, and bring lots of Theriaca As for this fight. Both the Automaton King and Olympia love throwing out binds.

And those will frequently prevent you from using your skills.

If I have to...

Faye's Head and Arms are bound, so she can't really do anything.

And guess who forgot to stock up on supplies for this fight? I have absolutely no way of removing these binds now, so Faye and Sidney are sitting ducks.

At least Cassandra didn't get her arms bound, so she can protect the front row.

Thankfully Charge doesn't use a body part, so Sidney can still amplify his damage output.

Akatsuki has nothing better to do, so he'll just chip away at those two.

Asteria will chip away at Olympia as well.

Sidney is dangerously low on HP, so I'm gonna have Cassandra Bodyguard him.

Watch me soar!

Meh.

Outside of her regular attack, Olympia only has one skill that can deal damage, so she's not as scary as the Automaton King, but she's still very annoying to deal with.

I'm surprised that didn't fry you right away!

Olympia is best taken down with physical attacks, as she resists elemental attacks. Likewise, elemental attacks are your best method of damaging the Automaton King, as he resists physical blows.

Faye is still bound, so she's nothing but a sitting duck right now. But Sidney should be able to deal a decent amount of damage to Olympia, even without attack buffs.

Gonna have Asteria chip away at both a bit more with Meteor.

Not now...

What a waste!

Unfortunately, only the Automaton King took all the hits.

Look at that damage. That was without any damage buffs!

Faye finally got her head unbound, so she can use Unbind to get rid of the party's binds.

I'll have Akatsuki use a Theriaca B to get rid of Cassandra's Paralysis. At least I remembered to bring that.

My thanks.

Oh that's just great.

Sheesh, what are these restraints made out of!?

Assuming Faye doesn't get her head bound again, I'll have her heal the party.

AUGH!

Assuming she doesn't get taken out. I should've had both Cassandras Bodyguard Faye and Sidney.

Once someone drops below 81% of their maximum health, Olympia will start using Fortress every 5 turns. She'll cast it on whoever has lower HP at the time to increase their physical defense.

Hee hee! I don't feel nearly as bad shooting you! Here, have another!

Thanks for warning me, idiot.

Gonna have Cassandra use Antivolt this turn.

I can finally have Sidney buff himself properly.

I'll have Akatsuki revive Faye while Cassandra buys me a free turn.

I don't like the looks of that.

Miss Faye, are you alright?

Yeah... My head just... ugh... Just give me a minute.

Not on my watch!

Uzurai is a very hard hitting Volt attack that gets used every 6 turns as long as both the Automaton King and Olympia are both alive. You can use Antivolt on those turns to get yourself a free turn. If you somehow get the turn count to a multiple of 30, Olympia will prioritize helping out the Automaton King cast this skill instead of casting Fortress.

This is gonna hurt! You, I mean.

I don't trust Faye to heal the party in time, so I'll have Akatsuki patch up the front row as well.

Yeah, good thing I had Akatsuki use the Madora II.

Aegis Shield is up, so I'll use that to buy myself another free turn.

Try getting past this.

Okay.

...Damn it!

Unfortunately, Aegis Shield does not block debuffs.

When Fortress wears off, it'll restore a large amount of HP to whoever the buff used to be on. Forcibly dispelling the buff through Ad Nihilo or a Metopon won't cause that to happen.

At the time I was playing through the fight, I didn't realize the buff already wore off. Oops.

...I'll admit that I don't know what I was trying to accomplish there.

Boom! Try repairing that!

And Olympia buffs herself again. But...

I can have Faye dispel that.

I could have had Asteria cast this earlier, but Faye's head was bound, so it would've dealt less damage due to the TEC penalty.

Oh no you don't.

Here's your ticket to the scrap heap!

But it doesn't look like he'll give up.

One down. Once Olympia goes down, the fight becomes a lot easier.

2896 points of damage, ouch.

That's not enough to dissuade you?

At this rate, if he keeps going on like this...

I try to go on the offensive and have Faye put up an Attack Order.

Here we go.

Guess he's still gotta lotta fight left in him...

I should note that a Prince/ss isn't that good of a class to bring to this fight. Mainly because of Liberation, which is Ad Nihilo on steroids. Not only does it dispel all buffs on the target, the damage increases with each buff that was on them. Buffing your party can be a death sentence in certain cases, as he is far more likely to use this skill the more buffs you have. On the other hand, the Automaton King and Olympia don't have any answer to debuffs, and a defense debuff can prevent Fortress from being applied.

But I'll just have Faye Resurrect him.

Ugh... D-damn it...

Or not.

I'll use the last of my Nectar IIs to revive them. I hope I don't have to use anymore, because I really should have stocked up on more supplies for this fight.

Thanks...

...For nothing.

Oops.

Maybe I should have had both Cassandras use Nectar IIs instead.

Is... is it over...?

Unfortunately, no. But I don't think he can keep at this for much longer. Just hang on, Faye.

Sorry, but I can't stick around anymore.

Up... and at em', Sid...

I accidentally selected Tagen Battou instead of Takanoha here.

Though Typhoon Bolt should deal a decent amount of damage to the Automaton King.

We are all sad.

Yeah, Tagen Battou deals a very pitiful amount of damage if you have no clones out.

I'm sorry... Everyone...

Shoot. Do we have anymore Nectars!?

No, we didn't bring that many!

And I'm out of Nectars.

Just for that, I'm giving you a double dose!

Ooh, Double Action proc, nice.

Rrrgh...

This fight is almost over now.

Once the Automaton King is low on HP, he'll start breaking out Punishment.

But eventually...

I'm sorry. We tried to be reasonable. Multiple times. But you just couldn't give up.

At least it's over now.

And with that, we've beaten Etrian Odyssey III.

Video: Ending and Credits

Out of all the credits music in the series, this track is my favorite of the bunch. No matter which path you chose, it's a very fitting theme to reflect on the events that happened.

Also this game's credits does a neat little thing where your maps are shown on the bottom screen. It's a nice little reminder of what you had to go through.

So that was Etrian Odyssey III. To this day, it's still my favorite game in the entire series. It certainly has its fair share of flaws, (The class balance is pretty much up there with EO2 as the worst in the entire series, for one) and I definitely would not recommend it to someone who's looking to get into the series, unless they don't own a 3DS. In which case, this is the easiest title to get into. If you do have a 3DS, I would recommend starting out with EO4 instead, as it is far more friendly to beginners.

But EO3 does have a lot going for it that just makes me enjoy it more than any of the other games. For one thing, the class portraits in this game are my favorite in the entire series. (I'll just say I was disappointed with EO4's class portraits and leave it at that.)

And the music! Overall, I love EO3's soundtrack a lot more than any of the other games'. I've already given my opinion on what I consider to be standout tracks throughout this LP.

And for better or worse, EO3 is a bit heavier on the story which definitely makes it a bit more of an interesting experience. Though personally, I'm not too big a fan of it. The reason why hasn't shown up in this LP though.

EO3 was a game I was really looking forward to show off. One of the reasons was that it's pretty much one of the biggest games in the series. Despite the reduced number of floors, there's a lot to do in the game, such as sailing and Sea Quests.

Not to mention it had the whole multiple endings aspect which hasn't been done again in any EO game. Though I understand why that's the case, as that does create additional factors to account for, especially considering that entire classes were gated behind the paths. And it does make 100% completion a bit of a pain. (If there's a remake of this game like how the first 2 EO games got remakes, I am curious as how that would be handled in Story mode.)

And as horrifically unbalanced as subclassing was, it definitely added something to the series and made character customization a lot more fun.

Still, I enjoyed showing off the game, and doing this LP helped me learn about the game even more. I mean for one thing, I never would have considered using a Farmer/Ninja in any other case, nor would I have found out how powerful one of those could be.

Oh and I do have to say that the QA for this game was much better than it was in EO2. (Let me just say the end of my EO2 LP had some very... magical moments.)

Is that girl STILL sleeping?

Can ya blame her? Faye took quite a beating in that battle. I'm still aching from what they did to me!

Still, for someone to be sleeping that long is a bit unnatural.

I'll go check on her. Maybe that battle took a bigger toll on her than we thought.

Mmm...

Something wrong, Charlotte?

It's just... When I was sent to assist you, slaying the Abyssal King was not what anyone had in mind. For the record, I don't blame any of you for what happened, but it's a shame things had to turn out that way.

He attacked us first. Any bit of diplomacy we tried went out the window when that happened. But hey, it's all over now. We reached the bottom of the Labyrinth, and put an end to whatever was going on with you guys.

Speaking of which, what's gonna happen with the Tidehunt Guild now?

Once Faye wakes up, I suppose we'll officially disband it. There's nothing else for us to do after all.

Aww, does it have to be over?

Nothing lasts forever, Fang. I enjoyed my time with you all, but I do have to get back home. Oh, Asteria! How's Faye do- ...Is something wrong?

F-Faye! She's... she's... she's not breathing!

Thank you for reading.
