Update 85: Scylla

Sometimes I wonder why we try to kill these monsters in such unorthodox ways.

First thing I'm doing this update is buying a ton of Curse Gases. You'll see why in a bit.

Let's get to the fights, shall we?

Here's the team I'll be using for the first Sea Quest.

And my Limit setup. Though I never really got a chance to use any of these.

Could it have noticed you? Suddenly a gigantic and grotesque shadow appears beneath the water! Atop the bulging mass of creature is a beautiful woman with a tragic expression...

Why is there a woman on that... thing?

Ooh! I heard that there was something like this in High Lagaard! Something about a dead woman getting experimented on-

You are quickly brought back to reality when the old soldier yells at you! His blade is already drawn!

Ah! Sorry!

Tell us the details later, we need to take her down now!

Join him in the fight and capture his indomitable spirit as you challenge the grotesque beast!

Here's another cameo boss, this time from EO2. Scylla was the boss of the 3rd Stratum in that game, and she was rather infamous for being a brick wall. So of course Atlus just had to bring her back. She pretty much operates the same way she did in EO2. Though she did get a few changes.

For one thing, she no longer uses her regular attack (unless she's Confused) so she'll be throwing out her skills a lot more often. She also no longer has 2 versions of Embrace (One dealt 150% damage, while having a 0.15x accuracy multiplier, while the other version dealt 200% damage and had a 0.05x accuracy multiplier) and instead the version she has goes all in on damage while tanking the accuracy to even lower levels. With that said, her AGI stat isn't that low, so she can still hit some slower classes with it. The other thing to keep in mind is that leg binds flat out disable your party's evasion in this game instead of just lowering their AGI, so Embrace is guaranteed to hit your party if she uses Tentacle.

Standard setup procedure for everyone. No need to do anything fancy here.

Okay, I think I'm starting to get used to this. ...Ow, maybe not.

Whoa, back off crab lady! I'm not taking any hugs from you!

Scylla always uses Embrace on the first turn. It's not likely to hit anyone, but if it does, you'll be off to a pretty rough start.

PUMP! IT! UP!

Okay, don't hurt yourselves too much, girls.

Aww, I was hoping she would get another heart attack.

The Tiger does have a 1.8% chance of instantly killing Scylla, but don't expect that to happen. If you really want to cheese Scylla that way, just use the Scylla exploit.

Let's amp things up.

Gonna cast Prevent Order to stop Six Sins or Lullaby from landing, I guess. Really, Faye doesn't have too much to do in this fight unless Scylla lands an ailment or uses Tentacle. Her role is pretty much reactionary instead of being proactive this time around.

And Asteria will knock off a good chunk of Scylla's HP.

Safety first, everyone! Geez, I sound like Cassie.

Ha! Nothing wrong with a little caution.

Oh huh, what do you know? That was the right call to make after all.

Storm warning!

Well, that's nice of him to do, but I have no idea if this will really help. It won't help that much against Embrace, and Cry Soul is the only thing it really affects.

More preparations for our upcoming assault.

Ready to kick some crabby butts?

Oh, so that's what having a broken back feels like...

Rose, I believe you may have some competition in the spine crushing department.

Oh come on, they're just good old fashioned bear hugs!

Oh dear. Well, Faye's job is done for now, at least.

Ooh, even more damage amplifiers!

Don't worry, Sir Faye. We'll avenge you shortly.

Payback time's coming!

Okay, time to take Scylla down.

Blood for blood!

Charlotte managed to roll 10 hits, and dealt a grand total of 6915 HP. Lopped off half of Scylla's HP in one attack.

Oh, this is going to either do nothing, or suck big time.

I'm okay!

Never mind...

A weird little visual glitch that can happen with Endure is that the game won't tell you if it activated if the character ended up dying anyway thanks to taking another hit from the same attack.

You are SO going down after what you just did!

Rose dealt a fairly impressive 3812 points of damage with that. Not as much as Charlotte did, but Scylla should be pretty close to dying right about now.

...That certainly wasn't an ohm run.

Great. Asteria would have killed her if she didn't miss. Oh well, I can just finish her off this turn. Not gonna bother reviving Charlotte and Faye and risk losing the fight now.

By the way, I'm the only allowed to give out those kinds of hugs, thanks.

That Sea Quest isn't really too much of a hassle, and you should have a fairly easy time with it.

The old soldier gazes on as the beast crumples into the deep, a tear rolling down his cheek...

I wonder what his and her deal was.

If the tales from High Lagaard are true and of any indication, it's not a very pretty one.

You are left to wonder why as he thanks you and asks that you set a course for the city. You comply, and make ready to report your results to the ocean city.

Makes you wonder about his burdens. ...But a man’s business is his own, and I just hope he finds peace. Anyway, he left this with me for you guys. He said he hoped it would support you in your endeavors.

It's a nice upgrade for Cassandra, I suppose. But if you already have this piece of equipment when you complete that Sea Quest (Or any of the Sea Quests, really), the Harbormaster's last line changes to this instead:

In any case, another fantastic job. I know Yggdrasil is tough, but the sea is counting on you, too.

Asteria has Meteor maxed out (60% damage per hit, and hits 5 to 6 times), so I'm gonna spend my skill points on Berserker Vow now. Yeah, both it and Charge work on Meteor because it deals Strike damage, despite the fact that Meteor uses the TEC stat to determine damage. Buffs only look at the damage type the skill deals, not the stat that it makes use of. It's the only way to keep her from falling off in the post-game. Hooray for weird technicalities!

...How in the world does this make a lick of sense!?

It's been such a long time since we last worked with them, hasn't it?

Yeah, didn't you fight with them like, at the beginning of all this?

Up next is this Sea Quest.

Here's my setup for this quest.

The monster rises, a beast half composed of sea organisms and half woman. This is your mark. Defeating her is the only way to pass through to the northern lands. As you and the brothers draw your weapons, the monster’s tentacles rise up and attack!

Back for more? Fine with me!

Just gonna ensure that Cassandra can set up Bunshin safely and doesn't have to defend the party with low HP.

I'd love to fire off a Etheric Charged Typhoon Bolt, but Asteria's Limit gauge isn't full yet. So I'll just settle for charging up for Volt Star.

If Pollux has nothing better to do, he'll just attack.

I really wish Castor was using Volt Star instead.

Many hands make light work.

I really don't have to worry about Scylla's opening attack unless I'm using Rose or another party member that's ridiculously slow.

Okay, since Scylla's attacks are all physical, I'm just gonna have one Cassandra use Line Guard to protect Faye.

And have the other one use Bodyguard to protect Asteria.

After this, Asteria should have her Limit gauge filled up.

Thankfully Scylla only rolled 3 hits on that one.

You know, this would sting a lot less if Castor actually used Etheric Charge. As it stands, he's just kind of useless.

Now that's how it's done!

I don't want anyone being tagged by Lullaby or Six Sins, so I'll have Faye prep up Prevent Order.

Let's blow Scylla up.

Pollux just spent this turn healing himself.

Scylla misses yet another Embrace.

Nobody loves you.

Ready to go?

Hee hee! Yeah, prepare for a world of hert- no, I'm not doing that.

Aww, and here I thought you came around. Oh well.

Ooh, 5135 points of damage. Very nice.

The elemental Limits are still good in the post-game, as long as Asteria can hit a weakness with it. Though now I'll have to chip off the rest of her HP fairly slowly, but it should be manageable at this point.

Not on my watch!

...Usually I'm the one who says that.

And the rest of the fight is just keeping the front line protected with Line Guard, the party protected with Prevent Order, and Asteria being Bodyguarded while she chips away at Scylla. So let's skip ahead to the interesting parts.

Let go of my feet!

Aw, fiddlesticks.

Hang on, I'll get you all out!

Tentacle is the one attack to watch out for, since it turns Embrace into a nearly guaranteed party wipe.

I don't want this Cassandra dying to Embrace, so I'll have her cast Indomitable. Unfortunately, despite the fact that 2 people can use it thanks to Bunshin, single target Limit skills only affect the caster.

And I'll have Faye dispel the leg binds.

Go ahead, just try to kill me!

If the ally AI can read your inputs (Some Sea Quest NPCs are capable of doing this, some aren't), they'll be nice enough to not make your actions redundant. Though given that Pollux is faster, maybe I should have just let him cast Unbind instead.

Okay, not as bad as Embrace, but this is still gonna sting. As Scylla's HP gets lower, she tends to get more aggressive about comboing her attacks with her disables.

Okay, that wasn't too bad.

Hands off! Err, tentacles off!

Okay, Scylla should be dead soon enough.

That's a soothing voi.... Mmmph...

Oh, come on! Lullaby is the worst of Scylla's disables, since not only does it disable the victims' evasion, it also ensures that Embrace will kill them.

I'm waking her up, pronto!

Miraculously, she never went after Asteria. Not that it would have mattered, since a Cassandra was Bodyguarding her.

Wakey wakey!

HUH!? WHA!? Oh, um. Thanks, Faye.

Here lies Scylla, unloved and unhugged.

Considering the amount of heart attacks she survived, I don't think we're done with her yet.

Really, aside from the fact that she's a cameo, Scylla really isn't an interesting boss. Just keep chipping away at her and dispel any ailments and binds that land on your team. She was an utter nightmare to deal with in EO2, and she's nowhere near that powerful here. Even though you're stuck with NPCs, you have plenty of ways to deal with her attacks at this point.

You watch it sink completely before cheering in victory, and setting sail for the ocean city.

I guess it’s important to stop and smell the seaweed sometimes. Sounds like things worked out for them. This book they asked me to give you must be their way of saying thanks. Please accept it on their behalf.

I think I'll stick with Asteria's current book. This isn't enough to fill up her Limit gauge in less than 7 turns. Though this can be nice if you want to ensure that someone fills up their Limit gauge faster.

And time to take on the 3rd Sea Quest.

This is the team I'll be going with. Originally I brought Rose instead of Charlotte, but Charlotte is far more reliable. She's significantly faster, which also means that she doesn't whiff her attacks as often. And 5-Ring Sword deals more damage on average than Blade Rave (That's also factoring in the 25% damage boost from Endless Battle.)

There are so many things that can go wrong in this battle, so I'm bringing a few safety nets.

Just then, a gigantic, black shadow appears next to your ship as though it had been waiting for you!

We're here! Get ready, all of you!

The monster rises, a beast half composed of sea organisms and half woman. This is your mark. The requestors show no signs of fatigue, they meant what they said about taking things easy! It is time to take weapon in hand and cooperate to defeat the threat before you!

Since I only have one attacker here, I'll be setting up a safety net by having Cassandra use Bunshin.

And I'll have Charlotte use Berserker Vow. I'm not really too worried about the HP loss.

I have no idea how Rose can do this all the time.

Mainly because the Farmers in this Sea Quest are pretty much serving as your healers for this fight, only significantly less durable and a lot more limited on how often they can do it. They'll prioritize healing you over healing themselves, take advantage of that. Though it does mean they'll die a bit more easily. You do want to keep them alive since they are your main healers.

If there's nothing for them to do, they'll just defend. They won't bother attacking Scylla. In most cases, at least.

Another reason I brought in Charlotte over Rose. She can actually dodge Embrace, where Rose actually had a good chance to be hit.

Assistance has arrived!

Just gonna have one Cassandra Bodyguard Charlotte, while the other one buffs her with Bravants. I want to increase Charlotte's damage output as much as possible.

Now that Charlotte has 9 turns of Berserker Vow active, I'm gonna use Daifuhensha to increase her damage even further. Yeah, a lot of the popular strategies for the game in general just involved stacking as many buffs as possible. To the point where buff stacking got nerfed in EO4.

I am a beacon of knowledge blazing out across a black sea of ignorance!

Charlotte, we're going to have to have a little talk if you keep up that attitude.

Daifuhensha unfortunately has a Provoke effect, so Cry Soul will target Charlotte pretty often. This almost lead to a Cassandra getting killed, but she managed to dodge those fatal hits.

Oh, that's just great.

You whippersnappers need to learn how to respect your elders! Where's MY medicine!? You there, tuck in that shirt! Back in my day you'd get a good spanking for that! And nag nag nag nag blah blah blah...

...Is this what I really sound like when I'm lecturing you all?

You're... not nearly as naggy as this. But you could afford to tone it down juuuust a bit.

Okay, now that Charlotte's Limit Gauge is full, I'll set up another safety net with Indomitable.

And I think she has enough buffs to take down Scylla, so I'll just have her Charge up now.

Take your best shot!

Fortunately, that Confusion did not last for long.

Because I'll be taking mine soon enough.

Gonna use Second Wind in case this Cassandra takes too much damage.

And here we go.

It was not luck, but skill.

Charlotte managed to roll all 10 hits here and dealt a whopping 7349 points of damage!

I'm really gonna have to thank Akatsuki for those lessons later.

Cassandra is having a lot of close calls in this battle. That value point in Senpuku is doing a lot of work.

...You didn't have to do that for me.

You really, really didn't.

All the Farmers accomplished was wasting supplies, but oh well. At least they were nice enough to refill my party's TP at the very least.

...Guys? GUYS!?

And this is why Prevent Order is considered to be one of the best support skills in the game. Because it prevents situations like this from happening.

Charlotte rolled 6 hits here, so she ended up dealing a respectable 4394 points of damage. Not enough to kill Scylla, but I don't want to do that just yet.

...I don't like where this is going.

Oh great, Charlotte still has Daifuhensha active. On the plus side, that means everyone else might be left alone.

There goes Indomitable.

If you think that's enough to take me down-

And Endure.

OW! Okay! You made your point! Please stop-

ACK! That was a tactical blunder...

And goodbye, Charlotte.

At least both of the Cassandras woke up.

Okay, Scylla has 417 HP left, so I think now is a good time to... go for her conditional drop. Which is killing her with Curse damage. Thankfully, this is the last Curse damage conditional in the game. But it's also the hardest one to go for. For one thing, Scylla has a Curse resistance of 10%! And the only methods to inflict that on her are using the Monk's Darkness Fist skill (which has a 60% infliction rate) or a Curse Gas (which has a 40% infliction rate.) Yeah, you're looking at a 12% to 13% chance at most if you're using the former method, and an 8% chance for the latter. Unfortunately, everyone's LUC and TEC stats are so low that they're stuck with a 4% chance per gas.

If you're going to go for the drop, you should either do it on the first Sea Quest and let Glaukos die early, or do it on this Sea Quest where Pale Horse never attacks in most cases. Except the problem is, if you get Scylla's health too low (2%), Pale Horse will start attacking her in order to killsteal. Yeah, they did not make this an easy conditional to go for.

Today is just not my day...

I hoped to stick around for a bit longer, but oh well.

And here's all the deaths that happened while I was trying to inflict Scylla with Curse.

This is going to take a while.

I'm wondering how in the world Edie managed to turn the very essence of evil into something that can be bottled up and weaponized.

Somehow, I wouldn't be surprised if she managed to turn her own greed into a tangible product.

After wasting several turns, I finally managed to land the Curse! Now all that needs to happen is for Scylla to commit suicide.

Perfect! The best time to go for this conditional drop is when she tries to disable the party, as she is very likely to follow that up with an actual attack.

Now since the Farmers prioritize healing my party over themselves, I'm gonna have Cassandra Line Guard the back row in case she uses Embrace.

Charlotte is just going to defend.

Begone, foul creature!

Ooh. That's gotta... I don't really see how she's coming back from that.

FINALLY! This drop took several tries to get due to how annoying is! Feel free to burn a Formaldehyde or use Lucky Hammer if you don't want to try going for it legitimately. Because Curse damage conditionals are the worst kind of conditional to go for.

And here's my little trophy. I never have to worry about those drops again.

You inquire about their behavior.

...What in the world are you all doing?

How you recover on a ship is important!

How do any of you get things done like this?

After seeing them in action, I wonder how they even get anything done at all.

Very carefully.

Shaking your head in disgust as they disappear into their tent, you set sail for the ocean city.

...“Over-exerted!?

“Camping trip?”

Do I even want to know what happened out there?

If Cassie is in one of those moods, no. You don't.

...Perhaps they could conquer even Yggdrasil with little more than a tent... They told me to give this to you. It’s up to you to find a use for it.

I guess this is nice for Gun Buccaneers? But this gets outclassed very fast. So into the inn storage it goes. Anyways, let's see what Scylla's drop unlocks.

I already showed off what her regular drop unlocks, so let's just look at the conditional.

Unfortunately, we need a drop from the 6th Stratum to fully unlock this piece of equipment. Oh well.

Cassandra got a level up from that fight, so I level up Parry to 3. Now she has a 10% chance to nullify physical attacks.

Now that's all said and done, let's take a look at the guild. I wanted to tackle a sidequest first, but unfortunately, everyone is too low leveled to take on any of them. So we're just going to explore a bit of the 6th Stratum first. Unlike some of the post-game bosses, where a little optimization may be required, the random encounters in the 6th Stratum aren't nearly as dangerous. Especially not compared to EO1's post-game random encounters, so you can get by with pretty much any party.

Hey, didn't we have any maps of that place?

Not really. We just kind of stumbled through blindly through there, remember?

Aww, this is gonna blow.

Faye is our healer, and honestly, she's kind of a really important support at this point. A couple of enemies love throwing out ailments and binds, which she can get rid of easily.

I hope the saying “third time's the charm” is true for us.

Cassandra is our defensive support. If the party is going to go up against any FOEs, she'll be nice to have along.

Eugh, it's always a pain to go through that Stratum. I don't think I have enough gunpowder for this.

Sidney is one of our strongest physical attackers. And he does have access to elemental damage, which is nice for dealing with a few enemies. He does have a small TP pool, but at this point, TP support is barely a concern, since we're going to get access to an item that completely eliminates any TP woes.

I most certainly look forward to the darkness and dizziness that awaits us.

Akatsuki's role is uhh... Yeah I'm gonna be honest, while using Dark Ether can be fun to use in the main game, it falls off hard here. For one thing, you don't want to have one person spamming Dark Ether all the time in boss fights since that effectively means you're fighting with a man down.

With that said, he's not a bad party member to bring along, since he can pick off some annoying enemies with Izuna, but he is heavily outclassed by Alice at this point.

Oh goodness, I just remembered what's in store for us, and I'm not looking forward to any of it.

Asteria is our elemental attacker, and she can make a few random encounters significantly less annoying since some of them take longer to kill with physical attacks.

But we must persist for the good of Armoroad and the world! What kind of queen would I be if I were to let such a thing run amok?

Susan is a nice support to have around since she can protect the party from status effects with Prevent Order, and is capable of buffing up our physical attackers.

Yeah, she's got a point. It might be annoying to go through, but I say bring it!

Rose is a durable physical attacker, though out of all the physical attackers we have, she is the weakest one.

A whole new Stratum to go through. And we're gonna be completely alone on this. I don't know how to feel about that.

Scott is one of our strongest physical attackers, but he lacks some of the elemental capabilities that Sidney has.

Th-that place is scary, but I'll still help out! M-Maybe.

While Fang's usefulness in boss fights is very questionable, random encounters in the post-game aren't so resistant to his disables, thankfully. He can be a fairly decent support at this point.

I'll do what I can! I won't hold you back!

Believe it or not, Alice is actually one of the best party members to bring along for this Stratum. Her pickoff capabilities make a lot of the enemies significantly less annoying to deal with since her instant death capabilities can bypass their annoying gimmicks entirely. (And one of them is kind of a middle finger to players looking to 100% the game, which Alice can deal with.) Akatsuki is capable of the same thing, but his stat spread makes pulling that off less likely.

We'll have to be careful on how we proceed through this.

Charlotte is another physical attacker we have. She's fairly fast but fragile, but capable of dishing out a lot of damage.

I'm gonna need a lot of tune ups for this!

Smith is another physical attacker. He's fairly durable, and can dish out elemental damage, which is nice for a few random encounters.

Vote for up to 3 characters you want to see explore the 6th Stratum. Votes must be in bold.
