Puzzles Reinvented

Welcome back, folks. Today we've got a fair few puzzles to get through before going on an intentional time travel trip!

3. Look at the photo from many different angles. Now you've got it, right?

S. Knight A and knight B's lances appear to be straight.

Compare knight C and D's lances carefully.

3. Try making a chart laying out the conditions of Hint Two, and mark the genders of each known sibling. You should make an important realization.

Also, just so you're clear, A is a male and B is a female.

S. There are more than five siblings.

If A has three younger sisters and C has three older brothers, than there must be at least three female siblings and three male siblings.

Don't need to even think about anything here, really. The puzzle itself all but tells you the answer outright.

Wow, what a sore loser.

At least we got another sticker out of it, but still.

2. The memo is a math problem. Try entering it into a calculator. Think on that...

3. 101 X 5 = 505

Calculators can't display letters, so...

S. The answer to the equation is 505.

Have you noticed that the five looks like an S and the zero looks like an O...

This is... absolutely the easiest of the bunch, frankly. Even moreso than the previous one.

Excellent work, my good man!

Honestly, I found the logic provided for this one a bit tough to follow until I started to map it out. Not because it was badly written or anything; I'm just bad at spacial stuff like that.

3. Starting from B', head up at the first intersection you encounter.

Starting from C', head straight at the first intersection you encounter.

And, well, this is a tad inconvenient. Hmm...

S. Based on the instructions in the first three hints, line A won't go above the ground. Also, line A should be completely connected by now, so connect the remaining lines.

It's a long route, but it gets there in the end at least!

You remind me of my son. A right know-it-all, he is, but he's a good boy really.
He used to love it when I'd give him a puzzle to work on. I do wish I could see the little tyke again.

3. Open the Memo function, and fill in the space around the colored sections of the each symbol. Then use the eraser to clear a horizontal line through the middle of each symbol.

You should see what's going on now.

S. After completing Hint Three, turn each symbol 90 degrees to the right.

Can you see the digits now?

I still think this puzzle is the hardest one of the lot here.

As you might recall, this one was a hidden puzzle. Just gonna skip along to the next one then.

3. D is quite a unique shape, and you can fit only two of them in your space. So D also isn't the answer.

S. The answer is either stone A, B, or E.

As mentioned in Hint One, if you start from the corners and work your way in, filling in as many stones as you can, you should find the answer in no time.

You can't fit more than four of any of the stones.

Nice and easy, really. Was another hidden puzzle, so...

3. Did you try filling in the dangerous squares? If you did that, wouldn't it reveal a safe path?

S. You'll know a path is dangerous if you've run into a dog before turning around three corners.

I know! I'm glad we could help as well!
Yes. Erm... Glad to be of service.

3. The frame and blocks are all composed of identical equilateral triangles.

If you compare the number of triangles in the frame to the number of triangles used to create all six of the blocks, well then...

S. The frame is composed of 22 triangles.

Together, the six blocks are composed of 24 triangles.

So there are two many triangles in the blocks. Which means...

A nice little trick here to figure out the real answer. Don't even need to try and piece the triangles together if you realised that.

And since this is our final hidden puzzle for now...

Suspicion

This encounter reminds Layton of Inspector Chelmey, and some questions he'd like to ask him.

More London Streets

We do start the chapter in the wooded area, but there's nothing to do but begin our trek back to the clock shop.

About five years ago.
Did anyone comment on its peculiar location?
Building a structure like that in the middle of the river seems to serve little purpose.
That's not untrue, Professor... But let's discuss the city later. We need to make for the clock shop.

That we do, and we will. But first, we might as well take a moment to talk to London's most dignified, dashing and debonair gentleman.

Er... All right. What's the matter?
It's that blasted bird over there!
The dreadful creature swooped down and plucked my best cufflinks right off my sleeves!
What bird?

Ah, there's now a parrot flying around the area here. Well, alright then.

Oh wow! A parrot!
Don't just stand there staring! Grab the winged menace before it flaps off!
You may not have noticed, sir, but we're in a bit of a hurry here.
Luke, listen to yourself! Don't you remember what the professor always says?

A very good point, Luke. Very well then, let's think. This bird clearly likes shiny objects.
Excuse me sir, would you happen to have anything shiny we could borrow for a moment?
Of course! What sort of gentleman would I be without the proper accoutrements?

Oh... Oh dear.
What's wrong?
Curses! The garnet has fallen to the bottom of my case and I can't reach it!
You're not making it very easy for us to help you.

038 Cluttered Case

Puzzles Reinvented

1. All that clutter got you confused? Well, here's a hint. You can't just move the garnet straight up. Looks like you'll have to bring it up from the right.

2. Move the following pieces up: the corner-shaped pieces above the gem, the T in the upper right, and the piece below it that looks like an L on its side.

Then you can move the gem up to the middle row and then all the may over to the right.

3. When you've completed Hint Two, put the garnet in the cavity of the U-shaped piece in the lower right. Then you can move the pieces above it to the left out of the way.

From there, move the garnet all the way to the upper-right corner.

S. If you've made it all the way to Hint Three, the rest should be simple. At this point, the gem should be in the upper-right corner. If you move the three pieces that are below the bag's opening, a path out will appear.

The key is not to move any items besides the initial three already moved.

Ah, a sliding puzzle. Great. Well, at least it's not that difficult for once.

But more important is that the person who solves this isn't necessarily who you think!

End

More London Streets

With any luck, this flashy gem will attract the parrot.
See if you can tame him when he gets close.
Leave it to me!
Right then. Here goes!

Here he comes!

Don't worry, boy! We won't hurt you!
Skwawk! Skwaaaark!
You don't say!
You know, that bird seems pretty fond of you, Luke. Are you friends now?
Of course!
Well, now that you're friends, why don't give you him a name?
Good idea, Professor! But what should I name him? Hmm...

The parrot's name is about as relevant and important as the other animal(like) companions from the previous two games. I went with a terrible joke from the 90s as filler. Something better wouldn't be hard to think of, though.

Hello there! I'm Luke. It's nice to meet you too, Mac!
Nice work, Luke! That was amazing!
Of course! What else would you expect from the apprentice of the great Professor Layton?

I'm sure you're not surprised to learn that the parrot is our third and final minigame. We can't even do anything for it right now though, strangely enough.

Keep at it and one day you will each become a true gentleman, just like myself.
Glad we could help. Here's your garnet and... I believe these cufflinks are yours too.
Oh, yes. There we are. With these in place I'm even more devastatingly handsome than before.
Now I believe you two young men deserve something for your trouble.
Oh, there's really no need, sir.
Helping people is reward enough for any gentleman!

Now that this is done, we can head on over to Midland Road...

But first, let's talk to Graham one last time.

Propose a business partnership, that is!
Gosh, how exciting!
Oh yes. At last Belle, radiant goddess that she is, will help me realise my life's ambition!
I plan to start... a clothing line!
As you can see, I am no stranger to style myself.
But no one has their finger on the pulse of fashion like that girl.
Every genius needs a muse. Belle is mine!
Oh... Well, um, good luck with that.

Okay NOW we can begin our very long path all the way back to the clock shop. Although, once we get to Flatland Road...

The left? Will that way take us back to Midland Road as well?
It will, and in half the time.

So now we can go through this archway and get access to a new area.

...If it's that much quicker, it sure would've been nice to know about it sooner.

Not much over here, though. Just the usual few hint coins and one guy to talk to. Well, might as well since we're in the area.

Oh, nothing, sir. I just saw you there and thought I'd say hello.
Hyaah haa haa! You've got some guts, trying to say hello to me. It makes me laugh! Hyaah haa haa!
It's been a while since I had myself a chuckle like that. Let me thank you with a puzzle.

Ah, that's nice and all but we're kind of a bit preoccupied right now.

Speaking of which, we'll just move right on.

...Hey! The door's locked!
Locked? It can't be. Budge over, Luke. I'll get it open.
How strange! It really is locked.

As you no doubt expect here, this is a mandatory puzzle so we'll just skip past it for now.

I think it's a little early for congratulations, Professor. The door still won't open.
If the puzzle isn't keeping the door shut, what is?
Well, I suppose it's time for plan B.

Certainly. It does seem we've run out of other options, after all.
Ready, everyone? All together on three. One. Two. Three!
Aaah!

Ah, this path IS much quicker! Also explains why this door was locked before for good measure.

What's that man doing on the ground?!
Ha ha ha! This fellow must have fallen asleep against the door.
It just goes to show that every puzzle has an answer.
Well think fast, Professor, because that answer is coming this way and he doesn't look happy.

We're terribly sorry, sir. Please understand, we had no idea you were there.
Oh, not you again...
Look, I can't deal with that hat of yours right now. I'm out of here.

I wouldn't pay it too much heed, Professor.
Besides, we need to keep moving towards the clock shop. We're nearly there now.

We'll do that in a moment, but first we're in the area so let's pop into the definitely-not-a-pub.

Searching for Clues

Just one thing to do in here.

Oh, nothing serious, I assure you.
Really? Still, that hat's trouble if you ask me...
But never mind that. Now that you're here, there's something I'd like your help with.

We'll do this later, but now we can move on.

Heading back outside then, we'll go on back north. That puts us just outside the clock shop again.

More London Streets

And, like you'd expect, Art has something new for us.

It's good to see that you're making progress with the construction work.
Pfft, if only that were the case. We've hit a snag, see. Look at these boards here.
They're a very odd shape. What are you using them for?
Diddly-squat. I've got crates of these things, but I can't use them.
I need square boards, y'see. What's a man to do?

Yeah, uh, I dunno either. Sorry.

Anyway, no more putting it off. We're just outside the shop after all, so...

That's because you didn't know the secret knock. Watch this.

Go on. Try the door now.

Suspicion

Augh! What are you doing hiding there?!
I see you've learned the secret knock, dearie.
Actually, I was the one who did the knocking, Spring. Is Cogg around?
Ah, there you are, Luke. Cogg's in the back room.
Oh, so you know the owners of the clock shop, Luke?

Well, it wasn't explicit but it was pretty obvious. Be hard to have free access to the wormhole here without that after all.

I think Cogg can explain better than I can, though. You should ask him.
All right. Let's hear what he has to say.

Cogg's in the backroom. Neither Luke nor Spring have anything new or interesting to say, unfortunately.

Nothing particularly unusual or new here either. Might as well just talk to Cogg then.

Nice to see you again, Professor and er...
Luke! The professor's apprentice!
Yes, yes, Luke, of course.

I think it would help to have everyone on the same page.
It'd be my pleasure. Now then, Luke! Erm... the smaller Luke, that is.
Yes?
Tell me, lad. What does this contraption behind me look like to you?
A big, old clock.

The old girl needs a lot of TLC to keep chugging along, so I spend quite a bit of time on maintenance.
I was right in the middle of oiling her gears one day when two Family thugs burst in...

Tension

Too right. Hey, boss! There's a big clock ere, just like you said. It's a proper antique, look!
Hey you! What do you think you're doing, barging into my shop? Get your hands off my clock!
Shut it, you old codger! You don't tell us what to do. Don't you know who you're dealin' with?
I'm dealing with a load of clods who won't get out of my shop!

Now get outta the way! We've got a schedule to keep here.

If we don't get a move on, things won't be ready in time for you-know-who!
Sorry boss, we're doin' our best, but grandad here's got his knickers in a twist.
Then throw 'im out into the street, you numpty!
Let me go, you villains!
We're just gonna go for a little walk, all right, grandad?
You keep your filthy hands off my clock! You hear me?

But we 'ave to wait until the exact time the boss said to turn this thing on.

Suspicion

It wasn't until later that I found out what the thugs wanted from my little clock shop.
See, the Family was funding the construction of a time machine by a group of scientists.
I think the idea was to use it to create some kind of wormhole.
But how could they do that?

Anyway, things didn't go exactly to plan, for whatever reason.
I see. So... somehow thi hole in time appeared in this clock of yours.
That's more or less it. This clock has been ticking away for over a hundred years.

The wormhole, or whatever it's called, became a part of my clock.
The thing is, I'm the only one who can keep the old girl running.

Wow, that's really weird!
It's a burde, is what it is.
Once the Family realised, they forced me to work the clock for them.
After a while, I caught wind of Cogg's situation.

In fact, the Family's been nothing but a source of trouble for him.
It certainly sounds like it.
So I approached Cogg and Spring and explained my plan to them.
They agreed to help, and Cogg fired up the machine so that I could get my message to you.
And upon receiving your letter, I let my curiosity take Luke and myself on a journey that led here.
That's quite a plan you concocted, Big Luke.
Thank you... But it's about to get even more interesting.
Oh?

You'll be able to speak to Inspector Chelmey there.
But you will come back to put a stop to what's going on here when you've finished, won't you?
You of all people should know the answer to that question, Luke.

Thank you, Professor. That was exactly the answer I was hoping for.
I wouldn't dream of leaving things here in this state.

Ha ha! That's true. My apologies. I should have never doubted you.

So now we can return to the nominative present day, but first...

We have a puzzle gate at last. 30 is very easy to hit by this point, though.

Seems you've done enough research to take your investigation back to your own time.
Hopefully, you'll learn something there that will help us clear up the terrible situation here.
Yes, I hope so. Now then, Cogg, if you would be so kind as to start up the clock...
I hope you'll understand if I stay here.

I agree.
Besides which, the poor inspector's eyes would likely pop out of his head if I turned up with two Lukes.
Wow, that actually sounds quite funny... Too bad you can't come, Big Luke.
Okay, she's all ready to go. Let's get going!

Ugh... I feel sick.
Are you going to be all right, Luke? You look positively pea-green.
I feel sort of seasick. My ears are all stuffy and the ground feels like it's made of marshmallow.

Well Cogg, we're going to head off now and see what we can find out.
Sounds good. I'll be here waiting for you. Just use that special knock and I'll let you in.

Yep, that'd be a pain, all right.
Now, you two should get moving. I'd like to get home in time for dinner.

Whew, it took a while but now we're back in our own time at last. Guess we should take advantage of this as soon as we can, and try to find Inspector Chelmey.

Puzzles Reinvented

As I'm sure you noticed, there's not too many puzzles this time around. Not like there's none at all, either, though.

1. If you think rationally about whose coat each child is wearing, you should figure out the answer in no time.

For example, you know B is wearing A's coat, right?

2. A isn't wearing a coat.

B is wearing A's coat.

C is wearing a coat, even thought he didn't bring one...but it's not A's.

It's a little convoluted, but the answer's in there somewhere.

1. It's difficult to choose only four numbers. Just try plugging in different numbers.

2. Think of two sets of two numbers that produce the same value when the numbers in one set are multiplied and the numbers in the other set are added together, and vice-versa.

1. The waiter said he hated carrying the box when it was filled with one type of glass.

What makes things unpleasant to carry?

2. It's the weight of the box that gives the waiter trouble when he's carrying glasses.

1. Compare the shape of the strange piece of wood to the square version in the upper-right corner. Keep in mind of the squares on each side in mind. That should give you a good place to start.

2. Each side of the square you're trying to make is five squares across. If you keep that in mind, you should be able to figure out where to make your cut.
