Puzzles Reinvented

Welcome back, folks! Just gonna finish up these few stragglers before we head off to Scotland Yard.

3. If you start from spots D or G and follow the directions mentioned in Hint One, you get these routes:

D to E to B to C.

G to E to D to A.

S. The final direction: take "the next left and it will be right in from of you."

Try taking a left from each of the final spots listed in Hints Two and Three.

As long as you remeber which way you were facing, you'll figure out the clock tower's location in no time.

A pretty easy one, all things considered. Not really too many possibilities that seem plausible, really.

It was okay, I suppose.
Wh-what? Just okay?!
Keh heh heh. Oh, I see. You're playing it cool.
You don't want to let on that my puzzle knocked your socks off.
That's one way of putting it...

We've got almost all of the second book's stickers at this point. Only like one or two to go, if I remember right.

3. The upper level has 40% as many tourists as the bottom level. In other words, two-fifths of 25 tourists, or 10 tourists. So that's 35 total tourists.

Is that everyone, though?

Unsurprisingly, this was the most common answer. It's definitely what my first thought was when I read it.

...So of course it's wrong. This is probably more of an issue caused by a regional difference that I didn't think would matter.

S. Hint Two reminded you that, besides the tourists, there's also a tour guide riding the bus. Moreover, a bus can't run without a bus driver!

Exactly one (1) person guessed 37, so congrats there, I guess!

So, I mentioned a regional difference here. The US version of this puzzle is completely identical, except the bus is stated to be a tour bus instead. Where 37 would work, because you've got 35 passengers, the driver and the tour guide.

Unfortunately, that's not the case here, so it's sorta... just messed up. Except for a brief, brief period of maybe like 7 months years ago (years after this game came out even), the driver and conductor are... the same person. Very rarely there'll be a second person there, because the driver is new or recently trained or something. But that's the exception, not the rule. Of course, I'm speaking about the UK specifcally here, but considering that everyone else rolled them into one person as well? I'm taking that as a good sign that's a very common thing.

The old double-deckers, mind. None of that bendy business.

Okay, cool, Vito has good opinions. yes the longer ones can carry more people but they also struggle with things like "not causing traffic issues" and "passing each other at turns"

S. It wasn't a beautiful bouquet or a violin's song that charmed her.

It was a loving gesture!

Okay, so technically A was the least common (picked) answer. But the logic employed by folks who picked B was, well...

It was exactly what the right answer was. Just, uh, employed in a way that was slightly off. Don't see the need to penalise for that.

The compliment means all the more coming from a lady such as yourself, Florence.
I do hope our paths cross again sometime.
Tee hee! Now you're making me blush.
You can sweet-talk me all you like, but you should know I'm a married woman.
I think that lady has taken a shine to you, Professor...

S. You know that the man in the middle has white pants. So, in order to avoid the same combination as the woman, his hat must be green and his jacket must be red.

If you fill in all these colors, you should solve this puzzle in no time!

Nothing too complicated or mean this time. Just a nice, straight forward logic puzzle.

Not at all. I quite enjoyed myself.

And that leaves us with this one mandatory puzzle.

2. Is it "00m"? Nope.

The answer is exactly 1/1000 of the original value.

3. No matter how much you play with the number, you can't get 1/1000 of the original value.

Why don't you try changing the unit of measurement?

S. 1/1000 of 1Km is 1m.

One one-thousandth of 100 m is 0.1m. In other words, 10cm.

And boy is it, by far, the easiest one we've had for a long time.

Alright, alright, back to business we go.

Suspicion

Back in present-day London, they seek out Chelmey, who was also at the time machine presentation.

We do have one small thing to do first...

London Streets

But it's not a detour, or anything. We just have to talk to Rosetta Stone again. She's right here, so that's easy enough to do.

We don't have time to talk! We're in the middle of an important investigation!
I wasn't walking to you, shorty. Well, Professor L?
We are indeed following a lead in our investigation.
Right, right... I don't supose I could have a second of your time before you head off, though?
Didn't you hear the professor? We're in a hurry!
Listen, pipsqueak, you might think you're the professor's spokesman, but, um, YOU AREN'T!
D-did you just call me "pipsqueak"?!

Heh heh! I knew you wouldn't let me down, Professor L.
I've got this puzzle I just can't get my head around, you see. Won't you help a damsel in distress?
A puzzle, you say? I think we may be able to offer some assistance. Let's have a look.
If all you wanted was some help with a puzzle, you should've just said so from the start...

We'll get to that later. We ARE a bit preoccupied right now.

Tell you what, why not come round to mine tonight, and we'll think it through together over dinner?
The professor's fully booked this evening! And for the rest of the year, come to think of it!

Weird jealousy arguments between a 13 year old and someone who's at least 18 aside... We do have somewhere to be. Best head on over, then.

Silence

Though, we do have another one of these scenes on the way there. This time, it's not mostly just a recap.

What was this explosion you were researching?
It all happened quite a few years ago, when you were very small.
Two scientists working in a physics lab accidentally caused an explosion during an experiment.

That must have been all over the news.
You'd think so, wouldn't you?
However, though many perished in the blast, few records of the accident remain.
What happened?
That's something I'm still trying to work our myself.
But answer me this, Luke: what is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of an explosion?

That was my first thought as well. I have a strong suspicion that these two incidents are connected.
Why's that?
Well, it's nothing more than a hunch at the moment, so I can't really say any more.
Hmm...
Oh, Professor, this is our stop!

London Streets

There's no time to waste. We have to find the inspector.

I agree, there's no time at all to waste here.

So we'll spend a scant few moments collecting all the hint coins here and then just head inside.

Searching for Clues

We'll grab a few more coins since we're here. Can't go anywhere else right now, so let's talk to the one cop who's here.

We're here to see Inspector Chelmey. Could you let him know that we'd like to speak to him?
I see... While the inspector is always happy to meet the public, he is terribly busy at the moment.
Furthermore, I'm under strict orders to issue this puzzle to all visitors.

Mandatory puzzle goes here.

Huh? Do you know the professor?
Of course! I'm a huuuge fan!
How could any self-respecting puzzler NOT know the name Layton?
I assume that puzzle was one of your own design?
That's right, guilty as charged! Heh heh!
I couldn't pass up the chance to have Professor Layton solve one of my puzzles!
I'll call to let the inspector know you're coming.
His office is just up those stairs.
Thank you very much.

Well, unless we want to leave (we don't), there's only one place to go. That other conspicuous doorway isn't an option.

...And Chelmey isn't even here. Great. I'm sure Barton knows where he is, though.

Wrong game, Barton. You're one sequel too late!

Good day, Barton.
Oh! Er... Good day to you, sir.
Barton, we wish to have a few words with the inspector, but I don't see him here.
I don't see him here either.
I was led to believe he was here in his office...

...I am puzzled by his sudden disappearance.

I'm pretty sure it's impossible to dislike Barton.

And if you disagree, I'm sorry. We're not friends any more.

It wasn't five minutes ago I told you I needed to pop downstairs to see the chief constable.
Oh yes. You did say that, sir.
Use your ears, Constable. You'll never move up in the force if you don't learn to listen.
Hello Inspector.
Ah, sorry about that, Layton. What a surprise to see you. Welcome to my humble office.
Forgive the sudden intrusion, Inspector.
I heard that you're leading the investigator into the prime minister's disappearance.

Dozens of eyewitnesses, myself included, and not one blasted lead to work with!
Since you were there too, I might as well hear your take on things. Have a seat.
I was interviewed on the day of the incident, but maybe another chat will uncover some new theories.

The Professor's Deductions

Yes, I certainly was.
Then you must believe, as I do, that there's no way anyone could have survived that blast.

But what confounds me is that we haven't found a single trace of any of them.
What do you mean?
We went through the place with a fine-tooth comb and didn't find anything related to the victims.
No bodies, no clothing and no shoes. Not even so much as a pocket watch or ring!
All we recovered from the scene was the 10 tons of scrap metal that used to be the machine.
No people.
There were eight of them, sir.
What? Did you just say something, Constable?
There were eight of them, sir. Eight people vanished.
Ah, yes. According to eyewitness reports, eight people vanished from the scene.

Now, in the world do eight people just vanish? It's like a blasted magic trick!
Don't worry, Inspector. From what I've heard, the prime minister is still alive!
Hmm? Ah, young Luke. Be a good lad and keep quiet, all right?
The adult are having a serious conversation here.

I already mentioned it this update, but again: Luke is 13 here.

Inspector, I assure you Luke isn't making this up. There's a very real possibility tht Bill Hawks is alive.
What?! Well, don't leave me here scratching my head like a fool! Explain yourself, Layton.
I will, but I must ask a favour of you first.
And what would that be?

What did you just say?!
I'll take that as a yes. It is imperative that I see any and all case files on that incident.
It sounds like you're on to something here, Layton. What do you know?
Nothing at the moment. But I have a suspicion your current case is somehow linked to this old one.
Hmm. I'd like to help, really I would. But those files are sealed and require top-level clearance.

I see...
I had hoped a man of your status might have the necessary clout to acquire those documents.
Unfortunately, it seems I may have hoped for too much. I'm sorry to have asked the impossible of you.
Er... Wait just a moment, Layton. I... just might be able to get you access to the case files.

A true gentleman is a master manipulator.

That Future Layton is apparently evil is... kinda not that big a surprise, if you think about it. Layton ain't exactly the perfect boy scout hero he's made out to be after all.

Excellent. I would be extremely grateful for that.
Just one thing, though. These documents don't come for free.
I want to hear everything you know, or suspect, about the prime minister's whereabouts.

Just.. this exchange is kinda amazing. Layton blatantly manipulates Chelmey into giving him access to classified documents. For nothing! Ostensibly for the price of "everything Layton knows", yes, but the inspector already asked for that.

Barton! Head down to the archives and find those old files. Tell them you're there on my orders.
Right away, sir!
Those files can't leave the archives, but you can read them down there.
Take the stairs down from the lobby to the cellar.
Much appreciated, Inspector.

We'll head right on over there, then. It's the second doorway by Colby. Nothing surprising here.

Suspicion

Speaking as someone who's worked as an archivist before... this is pretty accurate. Heck, I'd say it's still a bit too neat if anything. Though we're only seeing a snippet of it, so it could be even more of a mess elsewhere.

I've gathered all the case files pertaining to the explosion.
Thank you, Barton. Your hard work has saved us considerable time.
Yuck! These papers are all mildewy and covered in dust!
These files are off-limits to most people. You're the first to touch them in a long time.
Hand some of those over and I'll help you look through them. Where should I start?

Oh... Of course. If you say so, Professor.

In a very rare moment, we're not controlling Layton at all here. This is probably the most blatant the series has ever been about giving Layton information he needs for his Dramatic Reveal, without telling the player. Like, they're ultimately not mystery games, so it's fine and all. It's just normally more subtle about it.

Oh, it's not so bad. He only scolds me when he has good reason to. Which is often, unfortunately.
I make a lot of mistakes, so I get shouted at a lot.
He's always telling me I lack insight and don't, um, pay enough attention.
He's absolutely right. I get distracted very easily and then I make mistakes.
Aw, chin up, Constable. Everyone makes mistakes. I make them all the time!
I have made some howlers, though.
Just the other day in fact, I found myself in quite a jam...

Another mandatory puzzle goes here.

I'm not entirely sure Layton even knows how to shout.

Well, the professor's not really the shouting type.
But it's true that I never leave a puzzle unsolved. I've got his reputation to uphold!
Oh dear. I never considered the possibility that my clangers could harm the inspector's reputation.
Don't worry, Constable. You try your best and that's the most important thing.
If only I could convince the inspector to see things that way.

What is it, Professor?

What exactly did you find out, Proessor?
Let's just say that I'm very confident that the prime minister is still alive.
The only way to save him, however, is to travel to the other London, where he's being held.
You think he might be trapped in the future?
Perhaps. This is something we need to discuss with the inspector.

We should probably go check in with Chelmey. Not doing so would be incredibly rude after all!

...Plus, we have time to kill before the bus is expected to get here anyway. And it'll probably be late or cancelled or just not show up for no reason at all.

The Professor's Deductions

It did indeed!
But before I explain, please allow me a few questions.
Inspector, were you involved in the investigation into th explosion at that institute 10 years ago?
Yes... Ages ago, it was. I remember I had just been promoted to sergeant.
I see. And do you remember the names of the scientists thought to have caused the explosion?

Weren't there two scientists implicated? Do you remember the second scientist's name?
Erm... It WAS quite a long time ago, you know.
I see you're having some difficulty remembering.

Layton acting awful smug about this, when he absolutely just read these details on something that happened a decade ago in the past 5 minutes.

Hmph.
Well then, what about the victims? Do you remember anything about them?

Several of the builing's tenants perished in the explosion, as well as one of the lab assistants.
Strangely enough, though, I think that both the scientists involved in the experiment survived.
That was very informative. Thank you, Inspector.
Right, now I've got a few questions of my own.
How do you think this old case relates to my current one?
This is just a theory...
But I think the prime minister is being held somewhere beyond the influence of Scotland Yard.
Do you mean to say he's being held in another country?
You may find what I'm about to tell you hard to believe...

If this is your idea of a joke, Layton, I'm not laughing!
I can understand your scepticism. Well, thank you for all your help today, Inspector.
Should I learn anything else about the prime minister's whereabouts, you will be the first to know.
Come now, Luke. Let's be off.

Inspector, I've told you as much as I know at the moment. Now, please excuse us.

Welp, that was a fun diversion. Chelmey absolutely think he got swindled here.

And, to be fair, he did! Just... not quite in the way he thinks.

London Streets

Righto, Professor.

We'll just take the bus back on over to Midland Road then. No interstitial scenes or anything this time.

Though en route to the clock shop, we'll check in with Vito again. He's right here after all, so it's easy enough to do.

I... can't say. It's a secret.
Oh. Well, I was going to offer you a puzzle, but it looks like you're in a hurry, so...
You've got a puzzle that needs solving?
Hoo hoo! Now I've got your attention, eh?

Nah, not really. Bit preoccupied. Sorry!

S-something like that, sure.

We'll just carry on further into this alleyway... again... then.

What's the matter, Luke? Are you scared of travelling through time again?
Yes... I mean, no. As long as I don't have to do it alone.
Of course not. I'll be right here with you.

That's right. If my assumptions are correct, we'll find the prime minister there as well.
Do you think we'll run into trouble along the way?
Considering the warm welcome we received from the Family at the casino, I'd say anything's possible.
Luke, there's no telling what kind of dangers await us in the future.
Maybe it would be best for you to remain here in our time.
What kind of apprentice would I be if I left you to face those dangers all alone?
I'm coming with you, Professor. Let's go!

Puzzles Reinvented

1. It's understandable that you're confused by the blocks' complicated shapes.

Here's a hint: each of the blocks represents something.

Only 4 puzzles despite how lengthy our trip to Scotland Yard was. Only picked up two puzzles our entire stay there, even...

1. The key point is that it's the average for the year.

1. The first space after the start is an X, so you have to turn either left or right. Turn left.

2. At some point, you'll need to go all the way from the left to the right along the second row from the top.

Now just figure out how to get there.

1. You're not trying to build the entire checkerboard in your head at once, are you? That will only confuse you.

Try focusing on just one part of the board first.

2. Any sheet that doesn't already have a rough checkerboard pattern on it can be excluded as the top sheet.
