Puzzles Reinvented

Alrighty, so! We just have a few puzzles to work through right now. Nice and easy, I would hope.

2. The upper blocks are letters. Try to figure out what letters the blocks represent

3. As we all know, the main character of this game is Professor Layton.

Think on that...

S. As Hint Three alluded to, the blocks spell "LAYTON."

What missing letter would complete the word?

Pretty obvious what the "pattern" here is...

Think nothing of it, Rosetta. I hope to see you next week. Be sure not to neglect your studies.
Heh heh. No worries, Professor L. I'm looking forward to our many hours of... private instruction.
Oh, and make sure you leave your little friend at home next time we meet.
He might distract me from my studies.
I shouldn't say bad things about your students, Professor, but she is definitely not top of my class!

2. Just because there a lot of injured people and death somewhere doesn't necessarily mean that it's a dangerous place.

3. The original description could apply to a place where a lot of crime and accidents occur. However, it could also apply to a place where injured and sick people gather.

S. There's only one facility where sick and injured people are carried off to.

This is a classic linguistic trap, really. In particular, it's the mention of "injured people" that makes it obvious.

Honestly, Colby should be ashamed for coming up with something so basic and uninspired!

3. Eventually, you'll need to change direction by going through all four squares in the top-right corner and then again in the bottom-right corner.

S. To get your car into the parking spot, you'll end up approaching from the right side along the row below it and taking a right turn in.

Nothing too taxing here. Just a matter of drawing a path as you go, and it pretty quickly becomes obvious what the route is.

It probably helps that anything other than that path would total the car even faster.

3. A sheet that contains adjacent squares of the same color can't go on top.

S. Sheets A and B have adjacent squares of the same color. If you put either of these sheets on top, you won't have a checkerboard. In other words, you know that C goes on top.

Now that you know this, think about what colors need to fit into the black squares of sheet C.

Pretty easy to figure out, really:

...Not entirely sure why I picked that one to be the one I wrote out in full, since no one got it wrong. I'unno, it's probably the one that's easiest to explain.

Now then, let's get back to business, shall we?

Suspicion

Chapters in this game seem a lot shorter and individually less substantial than they did before, huh? Maybe that's just me, though.

London Streets

Excuse me? I don't know what you're talking about.
No point playing innocent, boy! Old Stachenscarfen knows more than you think!
Keh heh heh! They might be hidden, but I DO have eyes, you know.
And these eyes can see tat the law's right on your tail!
I don't think I understand...

Me either. His eyes aren't that hidden! Though, yeah, he could totally do with a haircut.

Say no more, boy. Just know that I'm always on your side. If you call me, I'll come running!
Oh... Well, thanks, I suppose.
We ought to be off now, Luke. I have the feeling that things are about to get interesting.

The entrance to the clock shop is right there, so it's not even a far trip.

Of course! Allow me, Professor.
Come on in!

Suspicion

Sorry to keep you waiting. Where is Cogg, by the way?
Oh, same place as always. In the back, tinkering with that big clock. Tee hee hoo.

No point keeping him waiting any more than we already have.

We did. I hope Luke hasn't got tired of waiting for us back in the future.
Yep, we mustn't keep the young sir waiting.
"Young sir"?
Hrm? Oh! Heh heh heh! Did I just call Luke "sir"?

My mind's just not as sharp as it used to be, you know. I often get a little muddled and-

*loud knock on the front door*

Hrm? Someone's at the door.

But I, madam, am no gentleman! I'm an officer of the law, and I'm here on an important investigation.

You tailed us, didn't you, Inspector?
In which case, Spring is right. It is very unbecoming of a gentleman.
Say what you will, Layton. The fact remains that our prime minister is missing!
And if I have to step on a few toes to find him, then that's what I'll do!
Inspector...
And I'll keep doing it until you lay your cards on the table, Layton. ALL of them.

You too, Luke!
F-Flora!

Sure is getting rather crowded in here now. Anyone else wanna join in while we're at it?

Flora, please. We just didn't want to put you in danger, that's all.
You say that, but the real reason you won't take me is because you think I'l get in the way! Isn't it?
No! That's not it at all!
Flora, you have to understand. You could be put in harm's way. It's for your own safety that-
I don't know anyone else here. What am I supposed to do when you two run off?
Just sit there like a lemon and wait?!
Well, when you put it that way...
Luke!

You may be leaving her behind out of concern, but that doesn't help anyone if it gets her all upset.
Inspector? You too?

I have to start her up now.
But there are several people here who have nothing to do with the matter at hand.
Well... The more the merrier, that's what they say, isn't it?
That's ridiculous. I beg you to reconsider.
Sorry, Professor. We've got to go. Hold on, everyone!
Hold on? What for?

Time machine clicks on, screen gets very shaky, the blue lighting becomes yellow. Seen it before, so I'll skip over it...

What in the world...?
Urgh... My stomach's doing backflips again.
Hey, Layton! What just happened?
Step outside and see for yourelf, Inspector. That should serve as sufficient explanation.
What are you on about now? Hmph. Come on then, Barton. Let's go outside.
Just a moment, Inspector. I'm feeling a little queasy. Very queasy, actually...
Pull yourself together, Constable! We're going outside.

Are you okay, Flora?
It was a rather bumpy ride.
I'll say. Time travel really takes it out of you.

Oh no! Flora!

We'll give her a moment to feel better, before we follow Chelmey outside.

More London Streets

We're still in London, Inspector. We've just been transported 10 years into the future.
But that's impossible! Isn't it? Or... is it possible, Layton?

The past two games included a town comprised entirely of robots and a box full of weed gas so potent that it made you hallucinate an entire town, complete with inhabitants and actual food that somehow worked as food, even if you had never inhaled it.

Time travel seems pretty possible.

One thing is for certain. We're no longer in the London we know.
Hmm. Well, there will be plenty of time for debate once my work here is done.

Yes. It's by no means certain, but it remains a definite possibility.
Well then, what are we standing around here for? The hunt is on, Barton!
We're off to find the Prime Minister!
You know, Inspector, we may have better luck tracking him down if we work together on this case...
That's enough from you, Layton. The fact remain that you're a civilian. I'll handle this on my own!

Before we leave and find Big Luke again, we'll take this moment to talk to Barton right quick.

Yes. No. Yes. Um... Where am I?
You're in the future! This is London, but 10 years in the future.
Oh... Oh my.
No need to fret, Constable! Everything is fine!
Oh, don't worry about me. The inspector is here. You and your friends are safe. We'll all be fine.
That's right, Constable!

Shame he ain't much good at puzzles, though. Art over there has another one for us, so I reckon we should go do that.

It was nothing really, just a bit of thinking and a well-placed cut.
Yeah? Well, if ain't too much trouble, you think you could work your magic on these boards too?

Umm... I'm not very good at these, honestly. I'll get back to you on that.

Anyway! One last little thing before we find Big Luke.

We can go talk to Cogg now and go between the Present and the Future Londons. We'll take a quick, long jog across the Present London back to Gressenheller University...

London Streets

Because Rosetta gets a new puzzle for us at this point.

Yeah, it's... it's a bit mean that this happens here. At least the window for doing it is pretty large.

Of course he didn't! I don't know what world you're living in, but you've got it all wrong.
Well look who tagged along. I didn't even realise you were there, short stuff.
I'm pretty sure I told you before, miss, but we're on a very important case right now.
Stop pestering the professor - we've got work to do.
And how do you know I'm bothering him? Can you read his mind? Do you know all his likes and dislikes?
Let's find out!

Oh my God, I did not come all this way for this dumb argument. Nope, we're not doing this right now.

Don't be ridiculous. I... I'll get it next time! You'll see!

We'll just go to Future London and not put up with this.

More London Streets

Now that you mention it, we never decided on a meeting place. Perhaps we should pay Shipley a visit.
Of course! He can get in touch with Big Luke for us! Shall we head over to the restaurant, then?

We could do that... but first, I don't think he was here before...

Mr... Stachenscarfen?!
The one and only! And who's your feathered friend there?
Oh, you mean Mac?
Rrrrrawk! Nice to meetchoo, meetchoo!
Keh heh heh! Nice to meet you too, birdie.
Say, you seem like a dependable lot. Can I ask you a favour?
I've recently become rather fond of mushrooms. Especially those little red ones, they're dee-licious!

A small, red, delicious mushroom... I haven't a clue where we could find one of those.
Awwwrk! Mac knows! Mac get!
Keh heh heh! Now, that's the kind of can-do attitude I like, birdie. But are you really up to the task?
Mac's no ordinary parrot! This should be a doddle for him.

It took a bit, but we finally have proper access to the minigame associated with our little parrot friend.

Let's get this show on the road.
Fetching my mushroom should be no problem for your parrot if he's half the bird you say he is.
Now hurry! I can't get enough of those little red mushrooms - you just have to be me one, quick!

We have to actually do this one right now, so...

The Parrot

Only the one so far, of course. There IS a bonus puzzle before now that doesn't count towards completion, though. We could still access it by clicking that little note in the bottom left.

We won't do that just yet, though. It's actually a bit harder than Stachen's here.

We just have to guide Mac over to Stachen here in 10 seconds. Not too tricky, but the definitely-not-poisonous mushroom weighs just enough to be a nuisance. Apparently. So instead of flying, Mac bounces. Off ropes.

Look, just go with it.

We have to set up a course of three ropes or less that'll get the job done in time. Being the first one, it's super easy to do:

Also being the first one, and mandatory to boot, I just did it myself.

More London Streets

Awrk! Ssspecimen!
You just go on like that and you'll become a very fine parrot! Keh heh heh! People will love you!
Awwwrk? Delivery! Delivery!

Now we can head on over to the restaurant and see if Shipley's still there. But, as you'll no doubt expect, first we have a spot of business in the Totally Not A Pub, Honest.

Searching for Clues

Feels like everytime we've come near the... "cafe", there's been at least one new puzzle. This time we've got two, eh?

We have. I can't say too much, but we've been on quite the journey.
Oh, is that so?
What you really need to perk you up is a nice, big meal, but we don't serve hot food here, I'm afraid.
I suppose I could whip up one of our special ham rolls, though. If you ask nicely, that is!
That sound great! But what makes it so special?
It's all about the order of the ingredients. Plus it has a extra-special secret ingredient.
Now I just have to remember how to make the thing. How does it go again?

I think we'll just give her time to get that straight. It's pretty important and all.

While she does that, we'll just go talk to Alfie I guess.

You don't look very well. Are you all right?
No worries, little lady. I'm doing just fine. FINE! I do appreciate your concern, though.
By way of thanks for your kind words, have this puzzle!
It's been sitting in my back pocket, so it's a little squashed, but it plays just fine. FINE!
Uh...ew?

Puzzles Reinvented

1. Identify the boxes that share a jam with each otehr. By weighing these boxes together, you can compare the weight of the two jams that aren't the same.

2. Try comparing the red/blue with the red/green box. You should be able to identify whether the blue jam is heavier than the green jam or vice versa.

3. Continuing on from Hint Two, try to figure out the weight of the red jam.

To do so, compare the red/green box with the blue/green box. You should find that blue > green > red.

S. Thinking of red, green, and blue as 1, 2, and 3 temporarily (lightest to heaviest), you'll find that the yellow/yellow box and the blue/green box are equal in weight. This means that the two yellow jams equal 3 + 2 (the relative weights of the blue and green jams).

In other words, one yellow jam has a weight of 2.5. If you fit that into what you know about the rest, you're done!

Okay, so this one... is a bit awkward. In giving you all the information you'd need to solve it, I would have to actually solve it. It's sort of like those weight puzzles from the first game, but without it being randomised and requiring clever thinking.

Disappointingly, the way to solve this is just to weight one set against all the others.

From the first set alone, we already know that blue is heavier than green and green is heavier than red. This doesn't help with yellow, of course, at least not without one last weight-in.

We know that 2Y is heavier than RB. RB in turn is heavier than than RG, so we can skip that one. We also know from the first set that BG is heavier than RG for the same reason. This means we only need to compare 2Y to BG...

And they're equal. So, in summation:

RB > RG
RB < 2Y
RB < BG
RG < 2Y
RG < BG
2Y = BG

This makes it pretty clear that the weight values are B > Y > G > R.

And if we just plug those values into the list above, just for proof, we get:

1 + 4 > 1 + 2
1 + 4 < 3 + 3
1 + 4 < 4 + 2
1 + 2 < 3 + 3
1 + 3 < 2 + 4
3 + 3 = 2 + 4

Oh, and as the preceding scene implied?

It only took until part-way through the third game, but Flora finally gets to solve puzzles!

...Granted she doesn't get
many, but she does get some!

Searching for Clues

Oh yeah, we're on Picture Book 3 now, I guess. Moving through that at a decent clip, it seems.

More London Streets

We'll head towards the restaurant proper, but first... Adeline has something new for us as well, huh?

Trip? I'll have you know that I was born in this city!
Right you are, then. Whatever you say.
What about yourself, madam? Were you born in London as well?
Me? Oh no, born and raised in Cardiff, I was. Spent most of my life there.
But then something, erm, unusual happened, see, and I ended up moving to London.
Oh yes, my life story's just like one of them sweeping, epic adventures you see at the pictures.
Speaking of films, have you heard this one?

Urm, probably not. I'm not really much of a movie person, you see.

When a tall person sits in front of you at the pictures, you just have to change seats.
Gosh, that's terribly poetic... Though I'm not sure I understand what it means.

It means she's probably never been to a cinema. I'm not exactly tall or anything, but that... doesn't matter. The futher back you go, the higher the seat it. Y'know, to prevent this problem.

Whatever, let's just head over to the arcade.

What's that, Professor?
We've neglected to explain the situation to Flora.
Gosh, you're right! It completely slipped my mind!
Oh, it's all right. I'm just happy I could come along.
Be that as it may, I think an explanation is in order. Let's stop at the hotel for a quick chat.

Puzzles Reinvented

1. You don't need to make any cuts on the left side of the board.

2. The gap there is threee squares long. In order to fill it, you need to find a place to cut an equally shaped piece from.

Find a shape you can cut out that will both fill this three-square gap and utilize the three-square L shape protruding from the right side.

I wasn't kidding earlier, when I said I'm pretty bad at these. I'm glad I get to shirk my puzzle-solving responsibilities share the load sometimes.

1. Well, for starters, Professor Layton isn't really into clothes...

2. Something Professor Layton likes is hidden among the clothes...

The rest on the other hand? Nah, I can do them just fine.

1. Are you trying to stack the ingredients exactly as the rules dictate and finding that either the ham or the lettuce ends up in the middle?

The trick is to work out where the ham goes.

2. The ham goes either at the top or the very bottom.

1. Try using the Memo function to write down the possibilities for each seat.

A depends on C, so keep those two on hold while you figure out the rest.

2. After writing down the possibilities for each seat, it should become clear that there's just one decision you have to make. Only one person doesn't mind the back-left seat. Who is it?
