Gameplay
Personal Notes
- Intersperse 4.5 talk into Let's Play of 4, introducing new Navis in the interim where nothing is happening within the context of the game. Do not introduce Navis ahead of when they are displayed in 4.
- When discussing each Navi, divide their presentation into sections.
* Section #1 - PET Screen: Introduction, starting/max HP, General/Library/Email dialogue, Holiday dialogue, and Tournament dialogue. Holidays are listed on the calendar.
* Section #2 - Internet (Gameplay): Buster shots, combat attributes, level up requirements, and personal mini-games (if any).
* Section #3 - Internet (Dialogue): Jacking out, fleeing from battle, their dialogue as an NPC, their dialogue as an NPC in a mirror match, and ShadeMan/LaserMan/Bass.
- NPC dialogue includes declining their request for battle, losing the battle, and winning the battle.
- MegaMan does not appear when not being played as and thus has no NPC dialogue.
- When doing the Bass vs. Bass transcription for his story segment, use BN2/3 Bass' mugshot for the boss.
- Discuss the PvP patch.
Commentary
- Most of the Navis are unlocked by completing a late-game tournament. For the sake of convenience, I'll be using a save file that has all Navis unlocked from the outset.
- The novelty of having 21 Navis to play as is nice. It's a shame that each one has their own folder, Key Items, HP leveling system, etc. that makes using all of them a real chore. MegaMan also lacks anything that would make him enjoyable to use in comparison to the others, like a Navi Customizer or purchasable HP Memories.
- This game has no real plot to speak of and is more of an attempt to make the player feel like an inhabitant of the Battle Network universe, which is at least a neat idea.
- The game's original battle system doesn't appeal to me at all. It makes me feel less like I'm playing due to the Navi exhibiting their own independence, and the Program Advances are not at all handy in the original due to how awkward it is to use them. The lack of Full Synchro is also stifling. Using a gameplay mod made by Greiga Master, I've been able to have more fun with things.
- I wish this game incorporated a combination of libraries from previous entries rather than just sticking with Battle Network 4's wholesale. You have Navis returning from 1, 2, and 3, so why not bring chips from those games as well?
- 4.5 was apparently going to have Key Item roadblocks, but they were seemingly cut in favor of the minigames. Regardless, the CutKey is preserved, likely a relic of that design system.
- The Chip Traders don't seem to force a save when used, for some odd reason.
- I'm not really a fan of events being tied to certain hours of the day. I guess it makes the world feel livelier, but I don't like feeling time-gated from events in a single player title. I feel like having so many Navis to play with would be encouragement enough to stick with the title for a while.
- The Ticket/License system artificially gating off areas is extremely obnoxious, but the gates in general are also fairly annoying. At the point in the story I'm on now, am in an area with a power-up for Roll that will increase the damage of her buster. Unfortunately, I can't access it because it's behind a door that I need NumberMan, ProtoMan, or ShadowMan to access, which requires me going through the process of getting them through enough of the story to get here.
- On the topic of the above, the lack of shortcuts to later networks is also a frustrating omission. That was something Battle Network 4 did well!
- Navis asking you more about yourself as the game goes on is a charming feature. It's just a shame that the dialogue gets a little repetitive and has very few variances, likely due to the expectation that you'll be spending more time on the Net than at the home screen. It's also possible to miss out on some of the questionaire information if you don't visit each menu enough times.
- Being unable to set FastGauge as a regular chip is making combat feel very tedious. (Mercifully, this was alleviated in later patches.)
- DS Navi chips are functionally a V2 chip in this game given that Dark Chips aren't a thing that you can use. SP Chips also seem to automatically be at max damage value.
- As a boss, ShadowMan has no counter frames for activating Full Synchro in the patch, for some reason.
- Strangely enough, there's a script error when Bass shows up in Chaos Area 2 for FireMan, ThunderMan, and SearchMan. While he usually says "...Come! I will bathe in your blood!", he instead repeats the line "Battle...with me..." without having his portrait appear. Dialogue after the fight is the same as usual. Apparently that was an issue in the vanilla game as well.
- The following Navis are not featured in the credit roll: WoodMan, SearchMan, AquaMan, ThunderMan, JunkMan, SparkMan, ColdMan, and ShadeMan.
- All in all, this game feels like it was devised more as a testing ground than an actual game, which I suppose isn't inaccurate. It's more inconvenient in a number of ways than BN4, and the lack of variance in what each Navi can do hampers the momentary enjoyment provided by the large roster of playable characters. Worse, if you don't have the Battle Chip Gate or some other method to unlock everyone, the gameplay is very repetitive and plodding, which will undoubtedly burn people out on wanting to go through the story with every Navi.

MegaMan
MegaMan is one of the four default Navis from the outset and the most familiar option. Unfortunately, he is at his most unpleasant to play in this game. Without any kind of gimmick like Style Changes or Souls, he comes across as a more boring version of every other playable character, and doesn't even have any fun dialogue to make up for the fact since he doesn't have Lan to bounce off of. If the aim was to get people to try playing as other characters as a result of this, that's somewhat fine, but flawed given that you are expected to beat the game with all 13 of the BN4 characters. I think MegaMan would've benefitted from having purchasable HP Memories or, at least, a daily practice virus battle for an HP upgrade as a playful nod to how every Battle Network game starts with a tutorial.

Roll
Roll is the second of the default Navi options. While it's nice to be able to play as her for once, she is a bit grating. As the only female character on the roster, her dialogue is written as though her personality is "girl", which is off-putting even in light of the fact that most Navis only have one character trait. Perhaps it'd be less pronounced if there was one other female character to play as? While she caps at 900 HP and only gets one buster upgrade, her charge shot winds up being handy at destroying chips at times and she also lacks any weaknesses. If anything, I kind of wish she had her HP noodle healing attack from her Mega Chip as a charge shot instead of a barrier; just give it a weak heal, a small range, and/or a long charge as a trade-off.

GutsMan
GutsMan is the third of the default Navi options. He levels up by battling, which makes it easy to farm weaker enemies until he caps. I used him to grind chips for the other Navis, allowing me to kill two birds with one stone. I'm surprised that he, of all Navis, has Under Shirt. I would think that SuperArmor would've been a more appropriate ability for him. He also doesn't have a punch attack as a charge shot, strangely enough!

NumberMan
NumberMan is the fourth of the default Navi options. I find him to be the least enjoyable of the base options, if only because his charge shot is RNG based. He levels up quickly, at least, thanks to his easy mini-game, and he also is one of the two starting Navis to be able to remove certain obstacles on the Net. So he has that going for him. There's not much more to say beyond that!

NumberMan: B-By my calculations, our chances of escape are zero! A-And our chances of winning are... ......A mere 0.00001%! B-But... we have no choice but to try!

FireMan
FireMan is unlocked by getting a trophy from the Official Tournament for the first time. He's the first Navi with a weakness, though that's only really a problem when fighting Aqua viruses, AquaMan, ColdMan, or IceMan. There's not really much else to say about him, aside from the fact that having a flamethrower charge shot is always nice.

WoodMan is unlocked by getting a trophy from the Official Tournament for the first time. I wish WoodMan's Death Forest charge shot didn't give i-Frames, but it's a fairly solid attack all the same, if a bit slow. WoodMan also has a very strong Otenko vibe in this game with both the respect for the Earth and Sun but also the intensity of his threats when he's pushed to his serious point, though that might just be because I played Boktai recently. Then again, we never do see Otenko and WoodMan in the same place at the same time...

WindMan

I find his charge shots to be fairly disappointing, primarily since bosses teleport when they move anyway, making it harder to maneuver them where I want. I suppose it's more useful for viruses, though. At any rate, he's probably my second least favorite Navi to play as.

ThunderMan is unlocked by getting a trophy from the Official Tournament for the fourth time. His charge shot is essentially what ElecMan has in BN6, so it's pretty good, especially since it strikes three times. Granted, since it flinches, it's better against viruses than Navis. Beyond that, his gimmick of leaving effigies everywhere reminds me of the fact that his clan will be linked with TomahawkMan's, so that's a neat little call forward. I just wish he said anything entertaining outside of the Official Tournament ending.

MetalMan
MetalMan is unlocked by getting a trophy from the Official Tournament for the fifth time. He's basically the cooler GutsMan, only he gets his HP from winning a mini-game. Having SuperArmor is a pretty nice ability, Metal Blade is a decent long-range option, and his mini-game isn't too bothersome, so leveling him up isn't too bad. His dialogue is a little tepid, though, usually just talking about his fists or something. His movement animations also look a little strange to me considering how he usually doesn't move much in battle unless he's punching.

JunkMan
JunkMan is unlocked by getting a trophy from the Official Tournament for the fifth time. Without a doubt, he is the most uncomfortable Navi for me to play as because of his passive gimmick of launching junk cubes at the enemy. This results in enemies taking 10 chip damage from those instead of the hits I want them to take. If the projectiles didn't give i-Frames it'd be fine, but instead it just proves to be more of a hindrance than a help. ThunderMan has a significantly more overpowered gimmick and it still has less of a downside. Beyond that, JunkMan skirts an odd line between cute and dangerously close to yandere territory.

ProtoMan
ProtoMan is unlocked by getting a trophy from the Official Tournament for the sixth time. I'm not a fan of how his sprite looks in this game compared to 5 and 6, but I do like that his charge shot is LongSword in this game instead of the usual WideSword. The increase in range is something that helps him a fair bit. That aside, the Official Missions aren't terribly interesting, just being a battle with a criminal that doesn't have much to say. Shame there wasn't a little more there.

StarMan
StarMan is one of the Navis that requires the Battle Chip Gate to unlock, though the patch has adjusted it to where he is unlocked by viewing the game's credits by beating the game with the initial 13 Navis. Aside from MegaMan, I feel like StarMan is the biggest victim of this game's lack of meaningful uniqueness between Navis. While his personality and charge shot are different, he is essentially just a reskin of Roll without the ability to swap his charge shot to a barrier or get a discount on Wednesday. He levels up via the exact same mini-game, caps at the same amount of HP, and has the same daily "data appeared somewhere on the internet" gimmick. Even as a boss, he has an attack that is essentially Roll Arrow. I wish more had been done to distinguish him. I am surprised there's no allusion to his previous history as a villain, though.

IceMan is one of the Navis that requires the Battle Chip Gate to unlock, though the patch has adjusted it to where he is unlocked by viewing the game's credits by beating the game with the initial 13 Navis. Sadly, FreezeBomb isn't as good as in Battle Network 2, but he'd probably he disgustingly overpowered if it was. At the very least, it does have a nice set-up into ElemIce and AreaGrab combos. I just wish he felt more interesting personality-wise than "slightly more confident AquaMan".

I much prefer his charge shot from 6, though being able to stun at will isn't a bad trade-off. It's extremely weird seeing him walking around instead of floating everywhere, though.

PlantMan
PlantMan is one of the Navis that requires the Battle Chip Gate to unlock, though the patch has adjusted it to where he is unlocked by viewing the game's credits by beating the game with the initial 13 Navis. Of all of the Navis, I enjoyed messing with PlantMan the most. I was able to make a solid folder with him thanks to FirePlus and GreenWood, and his Charge Shot pairs extremely well with the latter. Ironically, he uses it even better than WoodMan, the Navi the chip was based on.

KnightMan has a mechanic where he challenges Navis around the Net, much like Battle Fridays, with him gaining HP upon victory. KnightMan's got a fun personality, where he just seems so composed and refined at all times while also being a bit of a battle fanatic. It's rather charming.

ShadowMan
ShadowMan is one of the Navis that requires the Battle Chip Gate to unlock, though the patch has adjusted it to where he is unlocked by viewing the game's credits by beating the game with the initial 13 Navis. He feels very satisfying to use, mainly because his charge shot with the ninja star is great, albeit with a long movement stun on him afterwards. ShadowMan's assassination requests also have a lot of curious background information. One involves putting out a hit on a music producer who ruined the client's career and drove them from the music industry. Another involves a romantic rival wanting you to kill the other member of the love triangle. The most memorable for me was an operator sending his Navi to a remote part of the internet and then putting out a hit on him, leading the Navi to realize he's been betrayed when he can't jack out. It's interesting to see all of the circumstances the missions put you into.

Bass
Bass is one of the Navis that requires the Battle Chip Gate to unlock, though the patch makes him unlockable by clearing the Under Tournament. Naturally, he's incredibly powerful, but having Darkness Overload as a charge shot seems almost unfair for its range and damage output. As a nod to the originally trilogy, he also starts with a barrier. There's also a nod to that trilogy when he fights Bass in the Chaos Area, suggesting that it's one of Sean's clones that he's battling. I wonder if it's possible the original Bass never showed up again after Battle Network 3, and all of the Bass that MegaMan encounters are just clones, hence the lack of recognition.
