The Teams:

There were 4 teams added in Super Mega Baseball 3, one for each division. The DH (Designated Hitter) was also added to the super conference (DH can be activated or deactivated as desired in custom leagues). I've included the 2 more interesting teams below although if you see any in that picture of interest, feel free to ask for more info.

The Beewolves have been around since the first game, this is the crew I started playing with back in the day. In that time they've lost ace pitcher Yolando Cooper in the expansion draft and added Hurley Bender among other moves. Though listed as a balanced team I would say they are strongest at starting pitching even without Cooper, while being very weak at bullpen and also lacking in infield depth. They do have 2 superstar players in Handley Dexterez (Short Stop) and Hurley Bender (Starting Pitcher).

The Blowfish are a balanced team in the sense of not having any major weaknesses. Solid offense and defense, great pitching rotation and a strong bullpen, they do have some question marks in regard to outfield depth and closer Julio Huper is getting positively ancient in baseball years, so a decision will have to be made there sooner than later. Overall though this is an outstanding team.

The Heaters are one of the new expansion teams, and one of my favorites in concept. They are listed as "speed demons" but have one of the best starters in the game in Elmo Slayer and one of the best closers in Der Neverwocker. They also have a ton of money tied up in those players so the rest of the team could be considered a bubblegum and duct tape situtation. It certainly isn't hopeless but they are a team that demands much more intense lineup and bullpen management so they may not do as well in sim and AI vs AI. There also wouldn't be as many management options due to a lack of cap space.

Hands down my favorite team to play in this mode, the lineup, rotation, and bullpen are an absolute glorious mess. Features the youngest player in the game (I'm aware of) in Trey Mondo, one of the lowest accuracy pitchers in Beebee Takabasei, and maybe 2 good offensive players. Sure the bullpen is very good but they aren't going to be getting many leads late in games.

All that said, I love this team for franchise. They get over 10 million in cap space for development and you have a ton of options to upgrade positions or move players to secondary positions to squeeze the most out of this lineup. Typically this team is going to look very different at the end of its first season and some players will see major gains, last time I played them Takabasei's junk stat went up almost 30 points in one season! If she could hit the broad side of a barn she'd throw the ball right through it.

One interesting note here is that while I know this roster very well, I've never played it in a purely simulated league and would be interested to see how the player's perform without me controlling them. I've also never played it with artificial limits on what I can or can't do with them and my Sand Cats rosters typically see a ton of player turnover in the first year.

The Moose were my team back in SMB 2. In addition to great power, they have a great starting rotation lead by Rhiannon Cannon with a serviceable enough bullpen. I know the speed stat looks low but they have a couple good baserunning options scattered through the lineup or off the bench. I actually haven't really touched them in this game yet so I don't know if their limited defense is a major achilles heel (they really nerfed defensive stats in this game, it was pretty much meaningless in 2) but I would call them a great all round team as constructed.

I have actually never played the Overdogs. I think they were added in the second game and they were horrible in that game, bad offense and lackluster pitching put them behind in games a lot. I do like the logo though.

I would imagine they're worse in this game? Even if they upgraded at the plate, bad defense is much worse now than it used to be and coupled with the pitching this group could give up a lot of runs. That isn't a good formula for a smallball oriented team. May be an interesting pick because of the logo design and I know absolutely nothing about them, but don't expect them to win in the first season.

The Sawteeth would be the last team I have any significant experience with in this mode. The best argument for playing them is they're a well constructed small ball group with a sweet logo. This is actually another team I really don't know much about but would like to take for a spin, as they were another expansion team in Super Mega Baseball 2 where most of my time was spent with custom teams.

While I don't know the players well this squad always seems to play tough when I face them.

The Sirloins are the team that pretty much everyone plays, and for good reason. Ridiculous offensive stats and one of the better starting rotations in the game, in Super Mega Baseball 2 they were considered kind of a cheat team because defense was essentially meaningless as a stat so everyone played them online. It got to the point where the developers added a fatigue system into online play if a team got picked too much.

They're still a very good team in 3 but have lost third starter Kerwin Arches to the Sand Cats, downgraded at bullpen a bit, and now that mediocre defense can bite them with errors and dropped balls. All that said, offensively they're still outstanding and can score in bunches and coupled with a nasty starting rotation they can get a lot of early leads.

The other reason we may want to play them is several of the Sirloins best players are getting older. Hammer Longballo is now pushing 40 and should only have another year or two left before he hangs it up. In every franchise I've played he's either retired or entered free agency after the first year and he always demands 25+ million to start during negotiations.

This is a team that should be pretty good in the first season but start to drop off if we can't figure out how to balance the salary cap between paying aging superstar players and bringing in some fresh talent.

They also have some of the better names in the game, mostly being meat or home run based.

The Buzzards were horrendous in 2 but have seen a resurgence now that defense is a stat again. They still aren't great - it's odd to build a team around defense with such bad pitching - but it's something. Personally I haven't touched them so I can't tell you much.

The Crocs are a very tough team with some great starting pitchers, but the lineup suffers a little from a lack of power hitting. Their bullpen is also very vulnerable late in games, I had some very exciting postseason battles with these guys and only won when I was able to get the starter pulled for fatigue.

I wish I knew why this team sucks so bad. They have fantastic pitching on paper but for some reason they never seem to be able to pull it together. Even in 2 where defense didn't really matter, this just wasn't a good team. Maybe lineup construction? Offensively they're much worse in practice than they are on paper. Too bad, the pirate's cool.

Now we're getting into the teams I don't have as much experience with. The Grapplers are one of those bullpen teams with a garbage rotation so they give up too many early leads for the relievers to be effective. One of the moves I tend to make with these teams is to downgrade one of the relievers once it becomes viable to find a good spot starter or, if possible, a true ace pitcher to lead the staff (generally they're gone by the time they're affordable though).

If we decide to go with a bullpen oriented squad remember that you'd be free to deny my requests to clear these overpriced relievers off the cap. Could make for some interesting storylines.

Like a vegetarian diet, the Herbisaurs are just kinda boring and sad. I think they'd actually be fun to spice up in franchise and see who really steps up.

I had a bit of a rivalry going with this team in my Sand Cats franchise. During the regular season they handed us our first lost when Rhonda Rhubarb beat Kerwin Arches by going 9 innings and only giving up 2 runs. We would go on to meat them in the playoffs where Rhubarb went against us in an elimination game on short rest. She was again brilliant but this time I was patient enough to get her pulled in the 7th and we touched up the bullpen for 5 runs.

I have strong feelings about this team that I may never fully integrate.

If you're going to build a bullpen oriented team, build them to score a bunch of runs and keep in the game early. The thing with the Jacks is they can stop you cold with that bullpen and keep putting up runs. Kind of a streaky team but if they get hot they're a definite spoiler.

The Moonstars are unfortunately another kind of bland group, though I do like the logo. It's weird, I love pitching and they have it in spades but they're just so bad otherwise, and the bad defense almost negates the great pitching anyway. The 2010 Seattle Mariners reborn.

True to their name, the nemesis don't care about winning so much as ruining your carefully cultivated ERA by putting up a ton of points and causing you to break your controller when they rob a homerun. This is probably the most spiteful team in the game and it's mostly played by miserable little goblins, so it should be right up our alley!

I don't have much to say here other than that may be the angriest platypus I've ever seen.

The Wide Loads are a decent all rounder team kind of similar to the Moose, no big weaknesses but they aren't really great at anything either. I would encourage against this pick because I have ethical concerns about a team concept that encourages morbid obesity.

The Wild Pigs, like the Wide Loads, are not really a stand out team. Another group I don't really know much about. The times I've faced them haven't been particularly memorable.
