ZC has this neat reimagining of the Z1 title screen. Modern titles for modern people, eh?

It even remade the whole Z1 scroll thing from scratch! It's worth pointing out now that ZC was first intended to be a faithful recreation of Zelda 1 on the PC, dating all the way back to 1999!

If it still being around and updated to this day isn't dedication, I don't know what is (disregard the fact that it's an entire new devteam handling it).

ZC later got a level/quest editor thing added to it around... I'd like to say 2000? Granted, back then, it was really arse, being the bare minimum of Z1 clone making and being very buggy.

This is the file select! Looks similar to the Z1 file select, but an astute reader such as you might notice something near the top.

Yup, there's multiple pages of save files supported. ZC supports up to 15 save files per .sav file; so 15 base, and you can have more if you're willing to juggle the files or use external .sav jugglers.

Gotta change my controls in the settings beforehand; you'll notice it's a bit cropped. ZC has a lot of empty space surrounding the main playable area that I've chosen to crop out, and in my infinite wisdom I accidentally cropped out this screenshot too

As I was saying, ZC's original level editor was really crap. The first major update that got people hooked was 1.92, which I'd like to say came out in 2002? It added a lot of non-Z1 stuff like hammers and hookshots; the ability to have more than 9 dungeons and 1 overworld worth of content, animated tiles, and new enemies that... frankly, aren't very good (example: darknuts that move very fast, shoot sword beams while moving, and deal like 20 hearts of damage (no I'm not exaggerating they do a lot))

We don't talk about 1.92. It's a bad time. That said, it's an important milestone.

Next up was 2.10, which improved the interface, added Nayru's Love and Farore's Wind (Din's Fire was in 1.92), and let you change how the player looked upon picking up certain items. Also bugfixes (at the cost of introducing others). It's still not the best program, but there are still a few people who use it as a sort of niche limitation to force them to work creatively, which is neat.

Also don't mind me, just rambling while I set up the save file for our latest adventure.

But then we reach the holy grail of updates: 2.50. This update added a lot; You can finally edit or even create new enemies, edit or create new items, have more than one warp per screen, change how the subscreen looked beyond mild edits, let the player move diagonally, let the player drown in water, etc...
and scripting. You could now insert your own custom code in the program to make it do whatever you want. Custom bosses, custom items, custom visual effects, npcs you can talk to... all these, and more! All of which we're going to be seeing in this journey we're about to embark on. We're playing this in version 2.53, which is a ajor bugfix update over 2.50. Yes, the version numbers are utterly nonsensical and make no sense. Yes, they actually did go from 2.10, to 2.50, to 2.50.1, to 2.50.2, and finally to 2.53. The devs probably smoked a lot.

Also, this file select supports keyboard typing. Really handy.

I decided to name my file after me this time cause I'm vain. Sue me. We get a neat classic link icon next to our name; you may be wondering why we don't get fancy unique ones like we saw earlier. Well, we haven't loaded the quest yet! Gotta press the key I assigned to the 'A' button, and then...

Presto!

A minute after searching for the file with that fancy browse button later, and...

Here we are! Created by Moosh and Russ. Moosh requested I refer to him as a degenerate when asked for comment and claimed responsibility for "most of the degeneracy", so if the OP refers to them by any sort of title you can blame the degenerate for requesting so.

Much better. Now, let's finally head into the world of Pokemo-er Zelda fangames. Press start to begin!

Right away we are presented with a choice. We get to pick our main character! I plan on covering both modes eventually, don't you worry.

I pick the green elf kid on the left to start with.

: The evil demon Akuma resided in this darkness and with his vile influence, he destroyed the ancient kingdom ruling over Fendora. Mankind was almost completely killed off.

: bloodshed. They fought for days on end, evenly matched, their powers quickly depleting.

: remaining survivors, built the Temple of Seals to imprison him.

: would appear before them and defeat Akuma for good. In preparation for this day, Moosh bestowed upon the people a magical staff and three crystal spring bananas, the keys to Akuma's prison.

: now, they'd feel properly filled in if something significant were to happen.

Wow Uncle Ben who I've only just met, you know so much! Won't you please tell me more?

Oh sure, why don't you ask me if I'm a boy or a girl as well? Golly gee professor Oak, you're so knowledgeable to have to ask that question!

It's me, your grandson, Gary Oak!

Oh yeah? What proof do you ha-

Oh.

What!? I didn't enter that!

Get out of my head!

: Maybe you should see the village seer. That could be a sign of something serious. Speaking of him, I need to go speak with him about something. I'll be sure to bring it up.

And Ben walks out, after forcibly changing our name, questioning our sanity, and not giving us a starter pokemon. I feel cheated.

: I was supposed to meet with my friend Xaya by the Moosh statue today. I'd better get going.

Welp, we have our first objective! Time to leave th-

Oh.

I'm not doing that on purpose; if I start moving I can't stop or turn until I hit a wall.

Gary Oak shouldn't have to deal with pokemon ice movement! This is an outrage, and not the dragon type move either!

We eventually use the rail to line us up with the door, make like a grass type, and leaf.

Town.mp3

There's a kid out here. And, unfortunately, the ice movement thing is still affecting us. Let's talk to the kid and see what he has to say! We'll have to move right, then up, and left to reach him.

Kenny: They say we can't turn without bumping into something because Akuma put a curse on us right before Moosh and the sages sealed him. Does this mean people in other villages can turn at any time?

Oh, that explains it. Lets see what's over to the left then! Also, every npc in this game has a name, so I'll just prefix their text with it if they aren't important enough to have a screenshot.

Oooh, a heart piece! We can't get past these bushes yet, but we'll keep this in mind. Let's explore the right side then!

Boris: Boris smash too many rock today. Fingers hurt. Da.

We can't reach the house yet, so let's head up...

Xaya is north of Boris, but let's put off meeting up with her and see what's over to the left.

Sasha: I dropped a potato I was going to eat today. It was horrible. I hate it when food goes to waste.

She dropped her hot pocket. Unfortunate

I tried to explore over to the right, but unfortunately I walked in front of Xaya, which sucked me in and started the cutscene. Guess exploring will have to wait.

: Hey Finnigan. As you know, my father is the village seer and I've inherited his abilities. Well you see, last night I had a vision of the Moosh statue and so I figured we should inspect it together. I'd do it myself, but I thought I'd feel safer with you here. You know, just as a friend.

Uhuh, sure, whatever you say Xaya.

: I'm your best friend, Xaya, and I trust your judgement, but do you really think there's a secret to this statue that nobody else has found before?
: In my vision, I reached out to the statue and saw it move. There must be a switch or...

The screen jolts a bit. Xaya starts shaking.

: Xaya? Are you okay? What's happening? Another vision?

Xaya falls down and the screen distorts...

Final Confrontation.mp3

Town.mp3

After the vision, the screen blacks out and both Gary Oak and Xaya are in this house. They both walk up to the old man.

: Well, you see...
: That is troubling news indeed, for it means Akuma's return is at hand. However it is Xaya's first vision that intrigues me. I have a theory what it means, but I must stay here to look after Xaya. I'd like to ask That you inspect the Moosh statue once more. I will catch up with you soon.
: I'm gonna rest up here, Finnigan. Good luck!

And with that, we have control again.

Let's talk to them again!

: My head is still spinning from that horrible vision I just had. Thanks for looking out for me, Finnigan.
: If it's no trouble, I'd like you to inspect the Moosh statue again. Try inspecting it from the south.

We start to exit the house, but we stop to talk to Uncle Ben before we go.

: I may not look like it, but I'm somewhat of a tech geek. If you find a tech, chances are, I'll be able to tell you a thing or two about it.

Neeeeeeeeerd.

We exit the house.

Let's explore more of the village! We never did explore the east side. Also, remember that bottom screen and what options there are available to move to down there. Totally not going to be any inconsistencies regarding that later.

Ian: I used to be a real funny guy back in the day. Now what's considered funny has changed and I've stayed more or less the same. Getting old sucks.

o-okay then

Another piece of heart! We sure are finding a lot of those. Can't get it yet though

I guess we can't put it off forever. Time to face what lies ahead.

A secret passage! :O

Level 0.mp3

There's a switch down here, and some barriers. It's not as easy as just stepping on it cause of the ic-

No it's still easy. It's nice that they're teaching you the basics though!

Our first real "puzzle" with the Akuma's curse. The trick to this one is that if you just went up from the prior room instead of repositioning yourself to where I am now, you wouldn't be able to solve the puzzle that way.

This room looks a fair bit more tricky.

One attempt later and we end up in a pit. Ouch! Pits work just like in LttP or the GB Zeldas; you fall in them, take damage, and respawn at the room entrance.

It's just a more complicated version of the prior room's trick; you can't solve it from one entrance to the room.

We've found treasure!

I dunno, it looks like an ordinary ca-

Okay, yeah, it's the staff o-

Shut up

It occurs to me we haven't seen the inventory screen yet, so let's check it out.

Looks neat! A lot of empty space, I'm sure we'll be filling it out in due time.

First things first, we no longer are bound to pokemon ice movement! We're a free elf!

We also have a neat cane slash that we can use by pressing A! Might come in handy.

Last, but not least, we can press the B button to turn into Moosh!

If you press A while in Moosh form, you can do a dash attack!

With all these new toys to play with tucked under our belt, leaving this shrine thing is no problem at all.

Town.mp3

Orson comes to greet us in a completely normal, consistent manner. Nothing wrong with this at all!

: So you found the Staff of Moosh, did you? This proves that you are indeed the Avatar of Moosh as I predicted. This of course means it is your destiny to defeat Akuma, but first you must find the three Crystal Spring Bananas. My ancestors scattered them to the far corners of Fendora to keep them out of the hands of those who might do evil. The first of them should be in the Forest to the Northwest. Find the bananas, Finnigan, but beware. There are forces at work that seek to release the seal on Akuma if Xaya's vision is any indication. Come speak to me if you are lost. And buy a bomb bag while you're in town. These 50 rupees should cover the cost.

: Thank you. I'm a little confused still, but I promise I will defeat Akuma.

We have our big objective! Find bananas. Ooooooooh banana!

If we go back to Orson and Xaya's hut, they have this to say...

: The first banana is in the forest to the Northwest. Also you'll want to buy a bomb bag before you go.
: I heard, you're the avatar of Moosh, Finnigan. I'm happy for you but at the same time a little scared for your wellbeing. Be safe, okay?

With our new free movement power, we can check out every house we couldn't before!

Tex: Wow! You got the staff and everything. Does this mean you can perform techs? I hear if you turn into Moosh, you can do special attacks by pressing a sequence of buttons. If you ever find a tech, you should go talk to yer Uncle Ben. He knows a lot more about the world than he lets on.

Word travels fast, doesn't it? Also how the heck do you know about techs? Let me guess, next you'll say darth oak is my father.

Xerxes: I'm working on building a machine that lets you relive memories of past battles. Unfortunately it's not ready yet. Come back later.

Okay mister boss rush man.

Stan: This strange portal appeared in my house yesterday. I hear if you go inside, the evil spirits of the Old Ones will force you to play a diabolical game for their entertainment.

What!? Why would anyone do that!?

Stan: But if you do well, the portal might spit out something nice.

...

Let's check out the creepy portal!

Flappy Moosh.mid

We've made a horrible mistake

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

It's flappy bird but with Moosh. God help us.

I make it to 60 on normal mode before I hit a pipe. Let's get outta here!

The portal spits out a piece of heart. 1/4 Heart Pieces!

Time to go back in then like the trained dog I am

... needless to say, we don't win any more prizes with our skill.

Horace: It's funny the stuff that gets in your way sometimes. I bumped into a rabbit a while back.

Mako: I had the weirdest dream a couple days ago. I was a girl, and there was something about my best friend wearing a talking outfit...
Mako: I kinda wish I could have it again. I'm not too good with girls.

I already talked to you :U

Let's go buy some highly dangerous explosives!

I-is that a feather?

Zachary: That's a feather. Our supplier found a whole treasure trove of them inside a volcano recently so we're selling them dirt cheap. I don't think they do anything, though. They cost 5 rupees.

I get the yes/no options mixed up and buy the feather. It does nothing, and now I don't have enough to buy bombs

Thankfully, grasscutting is a highly profitable business venture, and it takes no time at all to replenish the 5 rupees we just spent.

Zachary: That's a bomb bag. It can hold 30 bombs. That's 30 more bombs than I think I need, but you never know when you'll need more bombs. It even comes filled with bombs. For 50 rupees it's yours.

This time I actually buy the item! Now we have bombs!

If we go up to the register and talk to Zachary:

Zachary: A customer? For real? I haven't had a customer in forever! I'm so happy I'm even going to say the thing:
Zachary: *ahem*
Zachary: BUY SOMETHIN' WILL YA!
Zachary: Hope you enjoyed that. Isn't often that I say the thing.

What a nice boy that shopkeeper Zachary sure is. No plans for cult domination he has, he sure doesn't.

Before we leave town, I go and check out the heart piece we saw earlier.

With our new cane and it's amazing power to cut grass, we can snag this! 2/4 Heart Pieces!

Speaking of cutting bushes, we can finally leave town now!

Onward, to adventure!

Next time: We set out to explore the land of Fendora!
