This update is purely going to be an exploration one leading up to the second dungeon. I'm too frustrated to do dungeon crawling, and you'll see why in a moment.

We head back to town, and since we have a nice nest egg of rupees...

Another item to fill out our inventory!

We got a tech at the end of last time, so let's get that checked out.

: Ooh! This is the Shield tech. It doubles your defense until you get hit seven times.
: To use it, you press: Down, Down, Down, A

: Hey Finnigan! Did you find the first Crystal Spring Banana?
: Huh...It's actually made of crystals? I guess I just never thought of the name literally. Haha.

: The next banana is in the ruins to the Northeast atop Trilby Peaks.

Let's test out that new tech!

The boosted defense is signified by us being green now.

Or blue, if we're Finnigan. We can only use these techs as Moosh, but the persistent ones seem to carry over to Finnigan if you switch back.

Ugh. I guess I better not put this off any longer than I have to.

Okay, so there's 3 prizes you can win from Flappy Moosh. One for getting 50 points in normal, one for getting 30 points in hard, and one for getting 100 points in anything. We got the normal one back in update one.

Hard isn't too hard if you grind it out for about 5 minutes. However, I have very little patience at this point, so I'm about to get my pro gamer card revoked and become a speedrunner.

Become a speedrunner by going slow. See that paused text in the bottom left? ZC has a built in frame advance, and I'm gonna abuse it cause I've already done this thing twice before legit already.

We get it easily. Even with TASing, I suffer a forced loss at 33 because of poor pipe RNG making it unwinnable.

1/4 Heart Pieces found.

Okay, so that isn't so bad. But if you recall, I said there were 3 prizes to be won here.

There's a prize for getting a score of 100 in any difficulty of your choice. This is where WTF mode would theoretically shine, as WTF mode randomizes your jump height, gravity, and speed. You could keep rolling until you find one that lets you snag that 100 prize with some difficulty.

However, that requires tedious amounts of time rerolling, and extended concentration to not choke as you do it for about 2 minutes straight until you hit 100.

In other words...

Gently caress that.

ZC has built in cheats. If you know the corresponding code per level for a quest, you can turn on cheats for that quest. ZC isn't a very well-encrypted machine; even if I didn't know the quest password for this quest for reasons, I could crack it open with minimal effort anyways and then view the cheat passwords from within the editor.

Look at all these options! Link Data is what we want.

We can give ourselves any item we want. I'm going to give myself the reward for that 100 flap ordeal instead of doing it legit: the Flap Tech.

Check that box, and...

Voila.

: Ooh! This is the Flap Tech. It lets you jump in the air and makes shockwaves when you land.
: To use it, press: Up, Up, Down, Down, A

For whoever is wondering: No, you can't use a tech without obtaining it first, even if you know the code.

I save my game and risk the wrath of the LP curse because saving is the only way to turn off cheats.

Thicc bear.

I waste some money on feathers before I go.

There's 2 exits to town we haven't actually checked yet. Let's check south first!

Shockwave stuns all enemies on screen and releases 8 projectiles that deal a good chunk of damage. It's pretty useful!

Unfortunately, this path only leads to a dead end. We can't deal with those trees yet.

Also, Moosh in the subscreen is green if you have defense enabled. Neat, probably unintended, touch.

Let's head east instead.

Nice, a graveyard. Y'know, I kinda wonder how anyone would ever reach this to pay respects with the whole curse thing they have going on.

2/4 Heart Pieces found.

We can explore the graveyard and get that heart piece with our new leaf. It doesn't look like there's much here at first glance asides from those rupees, but...

One of those graves has flowers in front of it. That must mean someone was here recently paying respects or something, right?

Bingo! It moves!

: I am the Cheeseforce, hear my words of Swissdom. The bonus dungeon is finished now, but it's not here, so I'm just chilling here.
: What, you want money like in the two week version of the quest? Fine, take this, and don't tell anyone I broke the fourth wall.

h'okay then

Let's buy a shield with that money!

And then buy 50 rupees worth of feathers cause why not?

We head north from the graveyard.

Yes, these octorocks shoot lit bombs. Why wouldn't they?

Drat, a dead-end! Guess we can't reach Trilby Peaks from this way.

Boomerang can be thrown in 8 directions, but it doesn't have the range to hit that.

Let's head north from the other side of the graveyard!

Mountains.mp3

Ah, progress! Lynels are from the original Z1; they're a bit mean, but nothing we can't handle.

Cave.mp3

It occurs to me that I haven't actually linked the cave theme before, so here it is.

There' a whirlwind hidden behind a spike trap, so we need to lure out the trap to cross the water.

More spike traps, but if you have a perceptive eye...

Show of hands: who here's familiar with the hardhat beetle?

This is probably the first normal, non-boss enemy we've seen that isn't included by default in ZC. You knock it into the pit to beat it (pits also aren't included with ZC and have to be scripted!)

Heart Pieces found: 3/4

I know if the lead ZC dev were to read the prior brackets, they'd immediately ping me and say "they're included in 2.55 by default!" before even reading the next sentence. So guys, pits are included by default in 2.55, a version that is still in alpha as of this writing. Just thought I'd let you know.

Leaving this cave faster than I can leave a debate with the devs over programming practices.

Mountains.mp3

Relinking cause the cave theme is a spotlight hog.

Nobody is safe from my potshots. Think I can hit Uncle Ben from up here?

Guys, I'm tackling important issues here.

Such as this switch that's blocking our path into the temple! This is a dead-end, but it's a required one to open the path to level 2.

Seems the lynels up here don't take too kindly to green elf kids invading their territory, so they beat the everliving poo poo out of me.

Confirmed Deaths: 5

For some reason, I respawn here. ZC continue points are a bit jank.

Welp, that's all we can do here. It's at this point that I remember there's stuff I can do with the leaf back in the forest.

The switch turns those buds into slashable flowers.

Heart Pieces found: 4/4! That's a new heart container if I saw one.

Don't think you're safe there either. Nobody is safe from my completionism! NOBODY!

Hey, remember this place? We hit that switch before level 1. And there's another one of those bomb octo guys too!

Another cave. You know what that means...

Cave.mp3

More blade traps, but these ones move constantly instead of waiting for you to have line of sight with them.

Have to wait for snekfriend to get out of the way, as I'm only on half a heart.

Phew!

Gimme! Now I won't have to walk all the way back in case I die.

What a giant crevice!

Thankfully, it's no problem for our handy leaf!

Finally! Level 2, here we come!

Total Deaths: 5
Heart Pieces obtained: 8
Heart Pieces taunting: 3
Gamer cards revoked: 1

Next Time: A dungeon best served cold.
