We could go straight to Production Art right now and start advance the plot, but there's a couple other bits and pieces to do first.

We got this weird text from Rui about... cucumbers. Uh, okay.

More relevantly, we've got a place in Area5 to check out. Going here first, since we've not gotten to see Area5 before now.

Malum

A man walks out of the shop, swearing. Then the manager and a middle-aged man come out, seemingly following him.

"Don't come back!"

"WHAT?!"

"Always touchin' stuff, never buyin' anything..."

"I gotta pick something up to see if I wanna buy it or not, genius!"

"Then don't buy it!"

"Screw this, this is giving me a headache..."

The manager gets even more upset at his attitude.

"Who the hell do you think you are, you punk?!"

"Eh?Whatever, nevermind..."

"You bastard..."

The customer runs off, bewildered.
He doesn't even notice Atsuki standing there.

"Sorry!"

He's short of breath from running. Regardless of the fact that Atsuki was right in front of him the manager glared at the customer.

...stupid idiot.
Always touching my stuff, never buys, or apologizes!

The manager finally notices Atsuki and calms down a bit before speaking to him.

...Oh, sorry. I wasn't talking to you, you know.

Hoshino is emphatically NOT likable. On purpose. You are not supposed to like him. Literally no characters in the game like him. You can see them disparaging and dunking on this guy in the BBS before he even turns up here if you really wanted to.

But yeah, young folks these days have such bad manners.
Hm, but you don't seem like that kind of person.
You're a nice young lad. Oh yeah, very clean.
Damn... Those other kids should learn from you.
OK I gotta go disinfect the stuff that loser touched.
Sorry to hold you up. See you.

Of the three places available in Area3, we already know about two of them. Sort of. The Post Office is innocuous enough, so we'll go there next.

Pardon me, but have you seen a big dog around?
Her name's Melody.
It's OK, I'm not some weirdo or anything.

She wandered in here when she was a puppy.
Since then, I've been keeping her at the post office.
She's a bit difficult...

Is... he rubbing his weird shaped badge?

Everyone says that's not true, but I can tell.
She picks on Kee-chan, what a bad dog...

Oh, it's not a badge. It's a clay dool. Thanks to its placement, I keep forgetting that despite it coming up fairly regualarly.

Last week I left Kee-chan in my dresser drawer,
and Melody took off with him in her mouth...
So I chased after her for dear life.
She gave him back, but he had teethmarks in his back.
I can't forgive that!!

OK, I got it!
I won't let her inside for awhile. That's it!
I don't care what anyone says, that's final!
You think so too, right Kee-chan?
Hm, I see. So you agree with me, huh?
OK. Let's do that.

With that, Enokida walks back into the post office, petting Kee-chan.

For the most part, the side characters are memorable and distinguised via their one character trait. It will get reinforced in your head over and over and over again.

Even if it's not especially good.

Last stop before we go visit Arthur is the store that Sayuri told us about.

Much like with Yuzi's place, we have this interstitial screen that sometimes gets used for scenes but is mostly just filler.

Pumpkin Pon

I cannot make any guarantees on the accuracy, or lack thereof, of the Chinese used here.

...
Aren't you Chinese?!
Oh, really? You look just like a Chinese person.
I made a mistake, so sorry!
You like my store?

So now you're gonna help!
If you don't, I can't go back to China.
You got money?

As she speaks, Mei Lin stares hard at Atsuki.

I see. You broke too, huh.
How sad... This town's full of broke people.
I'm so sad... I spent so much time on this place.
What should I do...?
...
You can't hear? I asked you what I should do?
Keep at it!

Ahahahaha!

..Yeah, so... Mei Lin is probably meant to be a little confusing sounding now and then, due to English Japanese whatever language we're ostensibly speaking not being her first language. That's fine and makes sense.

It just suffers from it being completely indistinguishable from literally everyone else.

Since you helped me, I'll help you!Ask me anything.
Wanna ask a question? Even dirty stuff is ok!

All of these are "correct" insofar as the responses go. We can only ask one, though, and only one of them really gives us any indication of what this place does.

Favorite type.

You wanna ask my type?
Why would you wanna ask me that? You wanna hook up?
That's impossible! Way too sudden!
Ah, my heart's pounding!
My type is...
Well, I don't have a type. No crushes either.
I'm still young, so I can't think about such things.
If my parents found out they'd get really mad.
Since you're a good talker I'll tell you something.
I like any guy that's kind to me.

Ok, hang on. What? How did she..?

Come again, ok? You can read my mind too!
KYA, SO EMBARASSING!!
I have a fun game I like to play! You interested?

But I'm certain I'm right! You wanna try?

And with that, we're given a confusing reveal that she somehow knows Atsuki is psychic, a vague explanation of what she really does here and are kicked back to the intermediary screen.

Heading on in, we have a couple options for what to do. PsyTest is the game attempting, quite badly, to psychologically assess you. The person playing this game.

Love Fortune is actually what you come here for:

It's a general way of keeping track of affection levels. This is relevant, because the game gates a couple things behind it. Mostly Archive scenes, of course, but a few other bits and pieces too. That cucumber text we got from Rui is tied to it, for example.

There's 10 levels for every character and no there's no easy way to know which you're at, beyond that green box synopsis. The heart DOES get bigger and have different animations at high enough levels, but it's not granular or anything. Plus side is no new characters will get added here, at least, so it's not quite as miserable as it seems.

Anyway, right now Mika, Yui and Honoka are level 1. Everyone else is level 2. Most of those make sense, but Shinji and Mika seem backwards to me. Whatever. I'm not gonna keep track of these too much. If/when we unlock stuff tied to it, I'll bring it up then.

For now though, let's head over to visit Arthur. We have things to actually do today!

Sunny Spot

FORT

Natsuki says there's a huge Shinen flux inside.
Check for strange Shinen in the area, OK?

The same Shinen you found in the Art Room.
Despair & deep sadness...
I feel one more Shinen inside the room.
Hm, maybe he has a guest over?
But Arthur seems to be really depressed...
Whoever's there is really close to him, or curious...
Go check the residual Shinen around the building!
Atsuki, be careful!

Two pieces of Residual Shinen to pick up here. The one on the door makes sense, but there's one over by the statue as well.

Memoria

Ancient Voice is a bit more interesting. Turns out that combining thing we see rarely can occur naturally. And it leads to... oddities.

Whisper

Bucolica

Oh, the guest was Ryo? I never would've guessed that.

Why are you here, Saijo?
I came to see Arthur.

Wow, are you interested in art, too?
Arthur's called the maverick of modern art, a genius.
His creative style is extremely unique.
Why'd he leave a mansion in Monaco for Kisaragi...
You know why, right?

These are all technically correct, depending on how you define that. They all give the same general emotional response but the best answer - to me - is the one that gives the best dialogue too.

Because he was born here.

...born here? ...really?
Hahaha, wait a second... You're messing with me!
So that means that... Arthur is... hehe...
Hehe, hahaha, no way!
...hehehe... That's funny, but there's no way...

from here. Arthur wanted to live here ever since.

Oddly enough, there is an actually semi-well known guy with this name. And he's kind of an artist in a sense. He's an architect, and he did in fact attend the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.

I heard this from him directly, so it's true.
But recently he's been taking time off work,
and he works on his art but rarely goes outside.

The book he ordered from my shop arrived yesterday.
When I told Aoi today, she asked me to check on him.
I met with him, but he doesn't seem too well.
He said it was only temporary, but...

It feels like there's more.
I've gotta go now.

So, after the prologue there's been occasional hint at stuff lurking beneath the surface. But mostly it'd shifted from the horror-esque atmosphere it was building up for an otherwise stock slice of life anime visual novel. It's not unreasonable for its early good will to have completely burnt up long before now. After all, it didn't seem to really be going anywhere...

FORT

...And then at this point, Natsuki cuts in out of nowhere.

I just caught two really large Shinen!

Area4 and Area6...
The target may still be there... hurry, Atsuki!

Silent City

So, we have a very distinct objective here. There's only two places to go; one locale in Area4 and one locale in Area6. There's a few other places to go, and if we hit up everywhere relevant that just opened, we can find 8 locations.

We're going to focus exclusively on Area6 for now. Everywhere here is open and will remain as such until we find the Shinen that Natsuki detected... or 8 turns pass. Whichever comes first.

We're just going to do a sweep of the area for our first 3 actions. The target starts at Yuhigaoka House and moves away from there on turn 3.

After we pick up our second Black QR Card, whoever is here leaves Yuhigaoka House and takes up residence in the school for the next two turns.

Of course, at this point Yuhigaoka House is searchable but is completely empty. We could in fact leave Area6 now, go do everything else available and come back...

...But we'd only have 1 turn left for Yamato. And he's displaying that fifth emotion on Natsuki's scan. This is new.

Heat

For the first time so far, the Info option is unavailable! I know, I'm shocked too.

Memory finally works and lets us see what it does. It lets us functionally use the Shinen we picked up before to draw out a reaction.

A new reaction. That grey emotion... that is not an emotion.

We need to use Weapon as well, but when we do...

You bastard! How do you know?!

Silent 683 ~ Toglas

Mind Dive

It's about time we finally met one of those Silent things we've been hearing so much about! As our first encounter, and an optional one at that, Toglas is not too difficult.

All Silent battles are touch-screen only affairs. There's a few types we'll be seeing, and this is naturally the simplest. So long as we tap the targets when they turn white, we'll be fine. They become hittable in the same order they spawn, but you've only got ~1 second at that point to hit them.

At that point, they explode and you'll take damage. This does get tricker as the fight progresses, since there'll be more targets that spawn and they seem to grow faster too.

The explosions are forced to happen when you win, since your inputs are no longer registered during a Silent's death animation. On the plus side, you take no damage in those instances.

They also have little bits of dialogue on the top-screen that occur at HP thresholds. There's not too many and they give you an insight into the effect they've had on the person infected.

In the case of Yamato, we basically already knew what his deal was. It seems like his right-wing views were being amplified by the Silent infection and this particular one has something to do with the group suicides we've been investigating.

Silents are worth a good chunk of EXP. Which is nice on paper, even if it doesn't really mean much. Still, gift horses and all that.

End

Heat

It seems he doesn't know what has just happened. Yamato's eyes suddenly seem more kind than usualy.

Anyway, what do you want?

Atsuki tells him he was just going for a walk, and happened ot run into him.

OK, that's fine.
Alright, you go home and study or something.

Yamato leaves as if nothing has happened.

FORT

We won't know what kind of Silent without analysis.
But I heop it's what we're after.
The chief was saying,

If so, a mistake in the mission may be disasterous.
I pray that's not the case.
Analysis report to come.
