S01E15: Double Arghh!!!

So, last time I said we might have an intermission type of update to get to know Wendie better but it turns out a lot of the dialogues I'm thinking of don't trigger until the post game! Some have triggered from other things or just recruiting Wendie though. But not that many.

So, instead we'll have a normal update now and wrap up the side stuff for now!

So, Wendie has a kind of weird selection of gear. She can use the same weapons as Sarah and SOME swords, the old ass purple robes, that one suit of armour she has on there and the misty chainmail. In the head slot she's limtied to the Passionata and the Wilderness Diadem. She might be able to equip what the rest of the party have on right now, but I didn't check. Think she can use most (but not all) of the accessories in the game though.

She also comes with a bunch of spells unique to her for the moment. Shell gives 'various protections', Moon Laser and Sunbite are both laser element spells, Lucien Knikcut is a boost to speed for the whole party. A godsend on Wendie who is by far the fastest partymember.

Delta Night is... '(All) Pw=? Huge strike from the undeads' world'

We return to Rillia for the moment.

In the library, now that she can cast it herself, Luci now gives advice to a guy on how to cast Turquoise Tornado.

Wendala blames porn and henty as the source of all evil with regards to young men. She might actually be accidentally right a little bit in a way Indinera definitely didn't intend. I mean, look at this game.

Elsewhere in the library, Wendie can get involved in the relationship of a pair of NPCs that have been there the whole game. The man is wondering how to get the woman to like him.

... Uh huh.

bosoms."

Wendie says, well he might be young but he has good taste, which aggravates Sarah.

Begun, The Anime Boob Size (Envy?) Wars have. Just need to have Sarah calling Wendie an old hag and/or a cow and it'd be pitch perfect.

Also, get ready for some extremely horny posting on main.

quote:

NAME: Wendala
BIRTHPLACE: ?
RACE: Female Human
AGE: 27

Wendala is a mysterious girl.
Indisputably sexy, gifted with curved big breasts and a gorgeous body, Wendala also can fight astonishingly and... obey drastically to her slime master.

Very little is known about the girl's past and origins, though it is obvious she had tens of lovers and sex affairs.

It also appears Wendala got murdered and revived by a female friend of her.

As a fighter, Wendala is a beautiful and graceful ranger, but she is also deadly!

Able to wield rare and major spells, she is also very fast and a favorite among many gods and major entities.

She has no real flaws, and her flaring temper is a good help during hard fights.

A versatile fighter, just like Sarah, really!

Strong against:
Dark and Mind
Weak at: Nothing, really!

"This house is quiet. It just like a free inn. I can rest." - Wendala

For her part, Wendala also seems to resent being used as a reward which I am not sure if that makes this more or less uncomfortable. s/M relationships usually don't involve the sub/slave being given away without their feelings being considered beforehand for very obvious reasons. I doubt it even happens any more often than 'vanishingly rarely.' But this probably is not the subforum to really talk about it.

While looking around Rillia's Docks for dialogue for Wendie I also find that there's a tiny bit of new stuff for Random and Sarah.

Like Random and Sarah not giving a shit about the possibility of shark and octopi attacks anymore.

The guy that warns us of Tamara the boosting witch humiliating him and his friends gets this out of Wendie.
Thanks you, Indy, I was completely clueless about a perceived virtue of humiliation and needed to be reminded.

BUT! Speaking of Tamara, I completely forgot about fighting her. Best rectify that soon.

Random gets upset with Wendie here for some reason.

In response Sarah says Wendie is always mean! This may seem like an odd line to have out of nowhere but I'm pretty sure you're probably not meant to see this until the postgame when you will in fact be well aware of what Wendie is like.

Marlons merry men in the Chanterless Woods say this now. This change actually takes place after you get through the Forest Maze, I believe. I'm not sure legendary is the right word here, Indy.

Anyway, I teleport back to GandJe Proud (the School of Transports is technically in GandJe Proud) and walk down and though SankT Leona, back south east.

I run into this thing on the way. Nothing special. 80XP, 21GP.

Wendie expresses confusion at the tiredness the rest of the party feels in this mysterious house.

In the first room, there's a painting of a sunset that apparently reminds Wendie of some holiday.

She says this response to Random saying the armour is fake...

To a picture of the ocean. Apparently she got lost at sea? Maybe?

This is in response to the books about being submissive/a good wife.

The big intricate sex books and the book of UNDEADS tales both just get an ellipsis out of her.

Oh yeah, Wendie comes with a key.

Everyone is surprised by the score in the chest.

Here's one of the better weapons in the game for Wendie. I think there's one or two more she can use with much more attack power, but this one hits all enemies. Also at this point I used all the stat up items I've been hoarding on her.

Is that a freaking copyright symbol

The letter starts out 'Wendala, my love...'

- Mr X

PS: You'll find here results of the deal we once made."

Hm. I still don't really know what this is about, maybe I'll piece something together on this playthrough, but Indy has talked about how Wendies backstory is its own game he's wanted to make for a long time, and that it'd HAVE TO be a SRPG. And he hates Fire Emblem/SRPGMaker because of the retaliatory attack mechanic. He's Shining Force man all the way through apparently. I have my own mild dislike of Fire Emblem's design but it's not the counter attack thing at all. I just think a bunch of the stuff with how it handles units and level ups and permadeath are all at odds with each other. I still liked the... GBA one with Lyn? In spite of that. The only other one I've played is Three Houses, which I really liked. For the writing. The best Fire Emblem game is Banner of the Maid.

But yeah, I accidentally got Indy ranting about the retaliation mechanic the other day. He really, really hates it and refuses to use SRPGMaker for that reason.

Anyway, now that I've been reminded of Tamara, it's time to go see her.

Tamara here charges 5k GP per fight and yes I said per fight. If you lose to her it is not a game over.

Tamara, the boosting witch, starts out by buffing herself sky-high. And she double hits too. She can completely destroy a pre-Tangar Mountains party pretty easily. Amusingly, she is actually bugged to be less dangerous than intended. She's meant to use a slew of powerful spells after buffing, to destroy the party. But due to the bug she just double-hit everyone which is still pretty nasty. At this point, double Protection raises our defense high enough to leave her doing only 80 or so damage. If I'd done this battle much earlier, part of the strategy would have also been to spam Diamond Jewel on her to debuff her, since she still would've been pretty dangerous.

She asks if we'd be okay with a symbolic gold coin but then answers her own question and gives us a choice of 250,000k gold (!) or a selection of one of four items. If you pick the items she says we're really smart.

It's not an equippable ring either! An elemental defensive buff, hm?

Time to move on to the main content of this update. Side quests!

I told you this teleport was too useful to bother killing the witch so we'd see her in LP3.

It's useful for Baretta's shop, too.

Bruce's Warehouse, infested by rats.

I don't know what this sign is about. Anyway, there's three rooms we have to clear out.

Here's the NE one.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

I love those.

Anyway. Despite how adorably goofy the rats are, the Gargantish Rat is very dangerous and so are the Lash Rats (in numbers.) Giant Rats are not worth worrying about though. The Lash Rats double hit Sarah for 50-90 damage so if they target her or Luci all at once they can flat out kill her. The Gargantish Rat can do 300+ damage to RANDOM. So you really neeed to cast Protection when you go up against them.

Giant Rats are worth 75XP and 14GP.
Lash Rats are worth 89XP and 10GP
Gargantish Rats are worth 298XP and 450GP.

And yes, that does mean we get tons of XP from this quest.

Anyway, this one fight clears out this hole. Another hole in this room provokes a similar fight, and then a second one against six Lash Rats.

After clearing out the second hole, I try to leave and... Get this message. This means there's still random rat encounters to clear out! Yep! Gotta do that!

After about 6 or 7 encounters we're flagged as all clear for this room.

The SE room has only one hole and a few encounters.

The W room has three holes and at least ten encounters!

And a boulder pushing puzzle!

You have to push one of those boulders in front of the hole allll the way around to a switch here to open a steel door. The other boulder puzzle is a red herring.

The hole behind the locked door has an exceptionally dangerous battle, but we manage.

Woo. I also looted 2100ish GP here and a bunch of lameass healing items and spheres.

On the way back to SankT Leona we run into more dwarf trouble. These guys don't havea ton of HP but they do have decent defense and attack!

75XP, 11GP and a small chance of dropping a Red Parsley.

We report to Bruce and I have no idea what the hell he is saying here. The line preceding it was about letting his partners know they can keep stuff there again. Anyway, he says the reward is whatever we can find in the warehouse. Which fucking blows. The XP and seeing the rats are the only reason to do this quest. Fuck you, Bruce.

We walk to the east side of SankT Leona to handle some side business.

Some sort of undead guild. Everyone refuses to provide us with their services and we can't enter the side halls. One skeletons tells us this place provides spritual guidance to those who need it or something. Another skeleton says only respectable undead are allowed in the guild so Wendie makes her case.

She is told 'probably not.' But that is the same name from that memorial we saw last update...

We rob them a little before we go.

Also uhhh... I guess temples need magical energy????

We leave and head a little bit north.

Hey, notice that grave on the other side of the mountains? We won't be going there till the postgame I believe.

Anyway, we investigate this den and then a guy laughs.

This is a mildly challeneging battle. Cruch is much tankier than the Lethal Dwarfs and hits a fair bit harder, but that's all, really, in the end.

Cruch has a good chance of dropping an Orc Mace, but I don't believe he did for me.

Random and Luci are skeptical it was worth it though. Hey, how about the satisfaction slaughtering some evil(?) bandits. I'm only assuming they're evil because this is no Master of the Wind here.

A bit further north still...

Baby ghost! Sarah says maybe we should leave and I say NO let's talk to the ghost.

Oh. Anyway, this is an easy but tedious fight. If you get Protection maxed, he does cast spells that still do decent damage to everyone, but not a lot. What's the real problem is he has very high Defense and Mind so you don't do much damage and he casts G-Wave to heal 999 damage pretty often. I wound up using Diamond Jewel a fair bit and even with the max amount of debuffing possible, he still had good defenses. Managed it in the end, though.

Anyway REMEMBER THIS GUYS NAME!

So do I, Random. So do I.

So before we get to the real exciting part of this update, lets go to GandJe Proud proper to pick up a small side quest.

So this guy promises an exorbitant reward for slaying the elf, Dobuhl-Ag, who stole a medal which belonged to his grandfather.

Sarah, naturally, objects.

Hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I mean, yeah.

Coryool is racist, and to top it off, Random explicitly says he agrees with Coryool. Sarah still disagrees but she keeps it to herself.

We can ask the guy we spoke to before if he's the elf we're looking for, but he says he is not.

We go south, into the Gargaryan Lands we've heard have so much trouble.

As you can see, we get a kind of grey tint. And rain.

quote:

Gargaryan Lands (region)
Inhabitants: 4500
Cold and poor region, West of SankT Leona.

Hm!

That lady was hiding this and three sacks of Opium, though.

And we pick up an extremely good accessory in this house.

Ariel here seems to think people called Warriors of Dust might be related to the Beast. Or maybe another NPC said that.

Ooh. If it wouldn't tank Sarah's speed, I'd give it to her, because her attack power is already basically useless now, monster defense is too high for even her double hitting to matter.

Not as good as which sword? He does not specify but we can't steal it since someone's here.

Outside we get this encounter. The rogues are extremely fragile and thus not a threat afaik. The Warriors of the Dust, though are pretty tanky but don't seem to be anything special.

Gargaryan Rogues are worth 48XP and 44GP.
Warriors of the Dust are worth 119XP and 65GP.

Also nothing special. 63XP.

Pass out the south end of the Gargaryan Lands...

This guy confirms he's Dobuhl-Ag. I choose to attack him!

Dobuhl-Ag dies from one crit from Random, and his friend, who has a couple thousand HP at least, is rendered a nonthreat by Nymph Para numbing him. Still, that's twice as much as one enemy, Coryool!

A nearby home has this guy that is apparently very proud of being a Metrolian. And having fought 10k battles.

He calls us newbie adventurers! Nearly a thousand battles and we're newbies! Bah!

Another nearby home has this guy telling us about a dangerous bird nest (that I Game Overed at) and a nearby ruin.

She is not nice.

This is a really big open area with a couple ruined buildings and some random NPCs walking around but nothing interesting.

No loot that I found either. Might have to check in RPGMaker what the deal with that place is.

At some point the rain turned to snow in the Gargaryan Lands.

Hm. How?

This is just here, because. Doesn't matter, I think.

Maybe we should find this Rolland guy soon, then.

We pay a guy 150GP to make a teleport point for us here.

... Hm!

Athors just says he fears no one can slay The Beast.

We steal his company's special made sword, though.

It's... actually pretty good!

But before we find Rolland, let's wrap up Dobuhl-Ag.

He goes into a backroom to grab the gold...

You sat on this for a while, Luci. The rest of the party is so stupid they didn't even remember they were killing a guy for a medal and so didn't even search for it. Anyway, the guy says oh right my sons medal, and Luci says GRANDFATHERS and then the guy says he has to...

Sarah is, of course, upset about an 'Elven brother' being murdered by her own party unjustly.

Coryool says we should kill the guy and take all his stuff and then Luci asks Random what they should do.

The optimal solution score wise/oracle dialogue wise is the middle one. You get 1000 points for it, and 500 for leaving with the gold, and 0 for killing him.

Hahaha. I bet he feels so owned. In fact, he laughs at Random and co. as they leave.

You can talk to him again and he is now much more insulting in how he tells us he has no stock left to sell:

Random just tells him to watch his words.

Anyway, I return to the Gargaryan Lands and proceed to Rollands home on the northern edge of the region.

Rolland refuses to speak to us properly unless we sit across from him though.

Apparently more than 50 'young maidens' have disappeared without a trace, 'probably fiercely killed.'

He says many mercs have come by and half of them have either found nothing and the other half just flatout vanished entirely so, Coryool...

Incredibly stupid drunk.

Anyway, Random wants to know if there's any place in particular we can find The Beast, but there isn't. We just have to wander aimlessly.

Well, let's get started.

So, we have to find The Beast in a random encounter. This can take a while. I've seen people say it took them hours.

quote:

Gargaryan Beast (unique, Gargaryan Lands)
In the Gargaryan Lands, nobody dares wandering alone anymore.
Indeed, the number of mysterious deaths is increasing every week, and in front of the lack of explanations, the same, simple, words are repeated everytime : the Gargaryan Beast.
Supposedly a dragon, or a huge lion, only a few people happened to claim having seen it, and nobody survived yet a closer encounter. Will someone ever describe accurately this monster, or isn't it actually just a... legend to cover bandits' murders ?

It takes about ten minutes for my first attempt. Yes, I said first attempt, because the Gargaryan beast is one of the fastest enemies in the game and does 300-500 damage per hit. And it double hits. Anyone it targets is guaranteed to go down if theyre not defending AND defense buffed to the max while the Beast has also been debuffed. The first time, Luciana went down on turn one and i just wound up reviving people while struggling to stay up and eventually faltered. The second time (which took 15 minutes to find) Luci and Wendy managed get all Defensed up by Luci while Wendala Defended. Then Wendala Revived the other two as Luci used DIamond Jewel to shred The Beasts attack power.

Every turn, Athors just shouts ATTACK, DROJAN and The Beast attacks. You may think you were meant to slay him first to keep the Beast from acting or something but that is not the case. Athors is immortal. That one NPC was probably hinting at that in a weird stupid way. You just have to suffer at the hands of the Beast and hope luck is on your side.

Athors flees after you slay The Beast and his henchmen.

We get teleported to outside Rolland's home.

Just like old times, Random hurls a severed head onto someones table.

The party informs Rolland about the fact that The Beast was accompanied by men who seemed to control it.

And he's in disbelief that any human man could be so cruel.

Luci and Random demand to know if he knows of anyone who'd benefit from frightening the people of the Gargaryan Lands and Rolland says, no, basically everyone here is poor and shit. No reason to at all.

This isn't mentioned in the game but I think the Raynald Athors we met was like an impostor?
He had a different faceset than the battle Athors did.

Athors is apparently the only person who could afford to move away that did not. That's apparently enough reason to suspect him.

Anyway, after resolving this the grey tint goes away and the rain/snow stops.

Rolland's daughter is now yelling about how we're heroes.

All of the NPCs say new stuff, but most of it's boring.

A guy I didn't even screenshot died though.

So we can steal his sword. It's an Athor's Co. Sword.

Apparently ritual chants are basically screamed out at the top of your lungs in the Deport.

Random says they should head in stealthily.

So Coryool bellows at the top of his lungs. And then Sarah yells at him.

Random is not amused.

The fake (?) Athors isn't blocking the stairway anymore.

The Armored Pigs are not even speed bumps. They ahve only like 200 HP so they always die before doing anything. The guards are not much better.

Armored Pigs are worth 52XP and 46GP and have an extremely low chance of dropping Power Guards.
Athors' Guards are worth 75XP and 550GP and have an extremely low chance of dropping Athors Co. Sword.

We do some looting even though we don't know if this guy is responsible or not for sure...

This is Random and Sarah losing their shit over a 'Visitors are forbidden from this area' sign. Why.

We have to duck into this passage behind some candelabras to progress. It takes us into a dimly lit passage filled with candelabras.

Because Random gets a great kicking-in-the-door pre-asskicking line here that would not have the same impact if you don't know exactly what Athors is saying, I am going to transcribe Athors' entire speech.

ATHORS: I understand your disappointment.
But we must react to this bad luck !

Our Order won't fail just because of this little mistake in our program !

We must react, and we must do it quick !
During the next 6 months, an atmosphere of terror again must haunt again the Lands...

RANDOM: !!!!

LUCI: ...

ATHORS: And during these 6 months, SankT Leona mustn't believe the troubles are off.
Never!

That's why you guys, particularly the Warriors of the Dust, but all of you with your very personal possibilities, you MUST travel the roads and make fear and lack of understanding suck the people's wills !

The Beast must revive in these people's minds !

Villagers mustn't think the Beast has been killed !

This way, we'll weaken the SankT King' influence among the local townsfolks...

... and the Athors Corporation, its men, its ideas, its tools will take th lead, but it is absolutely necessary to have our gargaryan people thinking, shivering to the Beast's name !

They'll see how SankT Leona and his demons are... unable to protect 'em...

...

I'll spend all of my time raising and taming another Beast. We'll have to deal with that Chief Rolland, too.

But this is my job.
Yours is to keep on with the murders.
Rather choose children and young maidens... this hurts most people's mind...

Simply sublime.

One of, if not my favourite, lines.

The woman floating over the altar drops down.

Athors shouts ATTACK but Random charges the crowd first.

Devoted Mans are so weak they always die before doing anything so I have no idea what they're like.

Low chance of dropping an Athors Co. Sword and are worth 60XP and 5GP.

A slash animation plays over every enemy sprite, one by one in a seemingly random order.

The exact same dialogue and animation and battle happens for all three rows of enemies.

When you've won the third battle, Random automatically rushes up to the altar while an armoured man approaches it from the left.

Sarah says she can't see Raynald anywhere, and the armoured man shouts attack!

Lord Egemon hits pretty hard. Did 198 damage in one hit. I'm not sure if he can do anything else though, because Wendies bows Death effect actually procced on him and he died on turn 2. The chaff was already dead by then too.

Random and co. just took out a whole cult corporation of killers and orcs. You know what this is. This is the Kiryu fights a yakuza family behind Serena moment of LP1. This means Random is the Kiryu of RPGMaker... Actually, so are Rhue, Traziun, Stoic and that one guy from Last Scenario I forget the name of that was not a party member.

Sarah says Raynald Athors got away, but we have regained control and can look around.

So many Athors Co. Swords...

Random just says its a book about conquering and ruling the Lands. Which he also adds is no longer possible.

ALRIGHT ALRIGHT I GET IT ALREADY! Enough! Buy Athors Co. Swords and their other wonderful products! They really are far ahead of the curve! Just look at the SankT Leona Sabres the Guardians use! Overpriced huge slabs of metal that make you attack slow because you have to use both hands like an idiot and you're slow as shit! Athors Co. really is the best!

Moving on,

the good cat, Herasia, discovers a secret door behind the altar if you look behind there.

We get attacked by ninja, though. This is a really easy fight despite Emerald Dabradus doing pretty hefty damage. But I do have to fight him twice. He has a 33% chance of dropping a unique item that counts for score. The Dark Rapier. Which sucks and is neither an Artifact nor a Relic, but it still counts for score. I have to reload and I get it on the second try, thankfully. Besides that, he's worth 120XP and 500GP.

Wood Spiders. While you can infrequently find them in the front parts of the warehouse, they're the only encounters here in the secret tunnels. They're also incredibly weak. Wendala goes first every turn and one shots them without fail.

Worth 16XP and drop Antidotes very very very rarely.

The secret tunnels are a maze of intersections and dead ends and some store rooms.

Here's a trick. This one apparent dead end conceals yet another secret passage.

The party briefly discusses how monstrous Athors must be or if he's even human and then...

RANDOM! DON'T NARRATE YOUR ACTUIONS HJESHHAHHAH

This is not a house!!! On the nearby dresser/bookshelf combo thing, a letter from Athors to his wife is hidden.

Hmm...

Random agrees, and we do in fact get approached from behind by Athors and co.

A shockingly easy battle. I just no-sell them on every level and they all die before a few turns are out.

Everyone pats themselves on the back and presumably because Indy was getting lazy and couldn't be assed coding more dialogue, the party goes lets just not bother telling Rolland about any of this because ??????????????????????????????

I actually completely forgot Athors might be connected to the Dark Order. We never get real confirmation on this either way, I believe. It remains a strong possibility though.

Sarah also asks if she can have the big diamond as if the party was just gonna leave it there.

Hahahaha

Anyway, we all leave. For some reason you cannot Egress from any point of this dungeon, which blows.

On the way back I run into this guy.

quote:

Goyundoundo (rare, around SankT Leona)
Huge and ugly red giant, the Goyundoundo walks aimlessly in the plains of the Western Part of SankT Leona. Mean, but shy and placid, this giant never dares entering the town, but careless merchants may be surprise by his two fat arms... and this usually leads to sudden death, or strangulation.

He spends his first turns 'Increasing his power' And I in turn buff the party up. Then he misses every attack as we grind through his thousands of HP.

Easy.

I stop by the Sage Tower to check out our score.

Nice, nice.

Also we have some entities from new spells. Death was Sarah's spell, if you recall. Lucien is Wendala's party-wide speed boosting spell, and Delta Night is Wendala's mysterious Undead World spell.

And... since we've been to every major region in the game now... Here's the manuals map of South-West Deport.

And next time... we move on with the plot. The game will under go a major tonal shift to be a bit edgelordy... And we'll get some amazingly tone deaf writing and NPC dialogue, including one of my OTHER favourite lines of dialogue.

the end
