S01E16: Loss.

Despite Random being super hyped to see them, we're not allowed to go look.

Also, Random gets excited about this sign that just says ARENA THIS WAY. Then Sarah says something goofy about how delighted she is to see him happy.

Random says 'I can ask myself!' which shuts the guy up, though he does think 'Stupid Teen!'

If you talk to him a second time:

Then if you talk to him a third time, the dialogue with Sarah repeats but at the end Luci says PSST!

... Thanks.

Then if you talk to him a FOURTH TIME

Imagine getting owned by Random.

There's a side room where warriors have signed up. Notably, Random is actually kind of wary and nervous around them. Sarah, though immediately brags to some of them how great Random is and he has to tell her to stop, repeatedly. It's actually a little bit cute.

Anyway, apparently inscriptions were going to close today! Made it just in time.

Oh yeah, you need an ID Card to enter. Another NPC is complaining he didn't know that. It apparently even has your place of residence on it.

Anyway, we're signed up.

And we're told to come back tomorrow.

And Luci wants us to move right along with the plot, so we start to leave.

If you look at this sign again, Sarah and Random have the same dialogue and this guy interjects.

When we leave a cutscene starts.

I'm sure this is fine.

I decide to take Wendala around SankT Leona before we start the next event.

This is in response to the REVOLT OF THE OOZES book.

If Elf girls are monkeys question.

And this is in response to Sarah asking Random to say Girls Must Obey again. I'm honestly not sure how you're meant to interpret this.

In response to the guy reading about a divinely beautiful princess named Celine. Wendala first says it's Pure Myth, and then Sarah says her line about how theres real beautiful girls like herself.

I guess Wendala knew this mythical Celine?

This is in response to the girl asking what a 69 is. I uh.... I....................

One of the mansions in town had a maid daydreaming about how she wishes she could be as beautiful as Yveen.

Uh huh.

We can also take her to the house Random played the piano at, and when he does so again, Wendala is inspired to take a turn herself, and produces a piano piece you have to sit through for a couple minutes. Nice piece though.

Anyway, moving on.

The Guard's Area is only accessible from the left side of the castle. The places we went the first time are on the right side.

attacks or whatever whatever.

When we try to head in, we get stopped, and when the party tries to explain, the guard calls for 'Captain Gerhart.'

Luci refuses to tell the Captain and wants to tell only the Prince, but Random takes control and blabs.

Some blond guy wanders up, I have no idea who he is meant to be.

The blond guy also starts calling us a bunch of mad kids.

But Luci eventually gets through to them.

They all laugh at the party.

Luci and Random, sensing they'll have no more luck than this appointment tomorrow, agree to back off.

Psh.

Anyway, the game doesn't tell you this, but you're meant to advance time to tomorrow by going to rest at the inn.

Except we find ourselves in one of the inn rooms!

Random and Guanidia are sharing, but apparently everyone else has their own room (except Herasia.)

Random loses his shit at Wendie saying they could have got a better inn, for some reason.

Random is also unsympatheic to the exhausted maid.

Lastly, we go to visit Sarah's room, where begins an insane dialogue of Sarah saying she loves Random about 5 times and Random says it once or something and then...

Uhm. Sure, I guess? I don't think I -actually- need to say this, but I'd like the thread to not become a place to debate whether or not teenagers should or should not do such things.

Still, against all odds, Random suddenly cold shoulders Sarah in such a way as to make me laugh. Coryools room is like 50 metres away! I can't believe he used the I'm too tired line. From Random. In this game?

Talk about subverting expectations. This is how you do it.

Sarah actually gets pretty upset by this and asks if Random doesn't love her (he says he does) and demands to know when he wont be tired so Random just half-assedly goes... Uhm... errrr.......................... tomorrow night I guess.

Random leaves and closes the door.

You have to specifically close Randoms bedroom door for some reason.

Random and Guanidia say good night to each other and then we fade out.

A noise disturbs Sarah's sleep and she hops out of bed and runs to the far side of the room.

They have light switches in SankT Leona??

Anyway, we gain control now, so I look around the room.

If you look at the closet, she just says her clothes are in there.

We can't do anything out in the hall either, so we head back to the room.

Demon Wolves double hit and Sarah has been totally unequipped so she goes down like a sack of potatoes.

In the next room, Random immediately springs into action.

Random has to be equipped as well, or you may game over very quickly.

There's random encounters in the inn now. Demon Wolves are pretty nasty with just Random and Guanidia. They're very fast, always going first, and double hit even Random for 80 damage or so. Guanidia fares even more very poorly against them.

84XP each.

Guanidias one good move is a big help. it doesn't just drain some HP from all enemies, but it debuffs all their stats, making Demon Wolf attacks much more manageable.

In tenth grade Biology class, my teacher spoke about Phagocytosis one day and said the name aloud and then paused. The desks in most of our science classrooms were set up in a big U shape so you could see most every other student pretty easily. So she said 'Phagocytosis' and looked around the room, which was still silent, and she said 'Girls, look at all the boys, and any that you see smiling like idiots or laughing are the ones you should never go out with.', which is what made me giggle, and pretty much everyone looked at me immediately.

We rush to Sarah's room and slay the Demon Wolf attacking her.

Random decides to carry Sarah out and he and Guanidia resolve to save the rest of the party and inn guests, and start down the hall.

Random asks why.

Random shows him Sarah and mentions he has other friends. Apparently, Sarah's injuries are pretty grievous. The Guardian joins us.

Leslie is not... great. Better than Guanidia, I guess.

Odd mix of spells too.

For some reason Coryool is spinning around in place. We kill the Demon Wolf attacking him and find that he's KO'd. The party decides to carry him out too.

Back in Random's room, I discover there's 99 MP Reserves in the closet. You have to take them... one by one. So it takes some time. Presumably this is so if you already have like 20 or something, you don't waste a bunch. I had 0, having used mine all up, and due to this sequence being awful without spamming all your skills constantly.

We fight the Demon Wolf going up the ladder, but just before we climb it...

Another random encounter.

Yep, it's not just Demon Wolves. The SankT Leona War Orcs kind of... don't do much. They have a 1% chance to drop a Brutal Axe, I guess. it's not like we need one since we've found like 20 of the fucking things. Worth 69XP and 115GP.

SankT Temple Priests summon Ground Clouds and Nereids for some decentish damage on Guanidia and Leslie. Worth 61XP and 245GP

We collect a bunch of loot on the roof and kill some Demon Wolfs. I think this is the only time in the game you can access this area, so you better not neglect to come up here!

We go back inside and down the main hall towards the second hall of rooms.

Leslie generally has brief but uninteresting chats with the other Guardians we encounter here.

In Wendies room, there's this and a dead Guardian and Demon Wolf. Hm!

In the room next to Luci's, which was locked before, you can find this 'strange pendant.'

This is your only chance in the game to get this, so another thing not to miss.

In the same room, you can get these. There'd been three NPCs in here, and there's three skeletons. RIP those guys.

We get treated to a short cutscene of Luci wandering around, perhaps oblivious to the ongoing city-wide battle.

There's one room guarded by a Demon Wolf for some reason even though it's empty of anything besides empty crates and crap and a chicken and another Demon Wolf we also kill. We actually want...

This other unguarded doorway east of the first one.

Random tells her who we saved already, and that Herasia seems okay and then Luci faints.

We grab poor kitty too.

This guy is dead wrong.

We kill a Demon Wolf to rescue Leanda, who is apparently unhurt.

She's not great. Not as good as Wendala, anyway, who is definitely the best fourth partymember overall despite not being super great herself.

Luci and Random are the only two real powerhouses, and Sarah's the only healer and Nymph's Para is nice for it's status effects. Everyone else is only situationally useful, if even that.

Eyyyyy Buckley. You seem to have suffered quite the loss here.

Apparently, a lot of inn guests and/or workers and Demon Wolfs have died in the common room.

R.I.P, guy.

You can save the dog.

A battle with two Demon Wolfs blocks the way out.

When you slay them a Guardian bursts in. Someone with a different faceset from the Guardians speaks up and has a Guardian escort Random and co. to the hospital.

And suddenly, here we are in the hospital.

Anyway, I have mixed feelings on the inn attack sequence. Throwing you into the deep without most of the party, and giving you a temp partymember is interesting, but the Demon Wolfs are way too fast and damaging to make it fun. Especially if you get the double Demon Wolf encounter. They'll quickly KO Guanidia and Leslie and can do a lot of damage to Random, pretty quickly. You'll be going into the inventory to heal nearly every battle and also to use MP Reserves now and then. Then finding Luci ontop of that, in a large area, is just too much. And I don't know if I'm imagining it, but the encounter rate feels much less random for this part... in the sense encounters seem to happen much more frequently instead of the insanely wide spread the encounter rate usually is.

Geez, the time limit on Wave must be really strict!

This feels like a reference to something. Also, this guy is one of the few NPCs in the game without any faceset at all.

A couple more familiar faces. Yoshimo's pretty badass, apparently.

Apparently the situation is quite bad.

Hey, they're trying!

Dickhead.

We can't explore the whole hospital, but that's okay, there's Plenty of Content in this part.

I wander about and talk to the dozens of NPCs milling around. Here's a selection.

You Can Feed The Dog.

Hm!

Why the hospital thought mixed baths was a good idea is beyond me. Also this probably counts as sexual harrassment of some sort, Random! I think? Or is that only with employees/co-workers? Would this be... uh... illegal voyeurism?

Someone brought their horse in.

Random!

As we see later, the King of SanKT Leona is in fact in the hospital.

Still yet more reason to sign up for the card.

Coryool says the only reason he was KO'd was all the whiskey he drank. Besides that, he and Random have a nice little chat about not much in particular, and where the others are.

This is the best guy.

HM

I agree, anime native american girl.

We'll actually meet Eva in the post game, I believe.

Arius... Keep trying!

Anyway, the men and women in that group are all healers that are out of MP.

We sign the hospital register which I am not sure matters.

I buy a bunch of these for no real reason.

AHA! We buy a hospital card.

There's a help desk here that tells you where everyone is at, even Sarah, as though you did not start by her side.

Don't feel bad! You just might have saved her life, kitty. She might have gotten torn to shreds very quickly if not out looking for you.

This guy says the tournament will be probably cancelled. Random muses over the fact that the previous Page Selection champion looks pretty weak.

We go and have our free meal.

The different means give different stat boosts.

Vegetables in sauce 8 HP
Werewolf meet plus paprika 5 AT
Chili con Carne 0

I want to point out that the noted favourite of the Guardians is the Chili Con Carne.

Oh, this is very promising.

This is the only real interesting tidbit about the tournament in the book, and even then it's not super interesting. The first prize is usually a sword I guess.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Elven women aren't women? The hell? What are they then? Animals?

Thank you, Random.

The last book is just the uninteresting stories of an ancient hero that Random hopes to be better than.

She what now?

:/

Anyway, next we go to the baths. There's a number of options here like having Random be too shy to take his clothes off, or saying he doesn't want to nurse to look (which results in the nurse saying she's a girl, she's seen men naked before especially in her work.) Also she points out the naked lady to Random again and-

That poor woman. But the nurse leaves Random alone after that besides to say he's very handsome.

HOWEVER. We can also get the stupid Extremely 90's H-Game scene by saying bring it on.

Random says he can feel her 'big boobs' and I can perfectly envision the PC-98 engine version of this game Indy was probably fantasising about all of a sudden.

The nurse is confused that Random does not seem to be wounded and he makes up some excuse, I forget, and then its time for the bath.

Okay, I kind of like that line. He absolutely knows he's a little shithead.

Anyway, the bath passes without much fuss, though the nurse hits on Random a little and muses she'd bathe him twice if it wasn't against the rules. Jesus, settle down lady. And Random. And Indy.

We head back to Sarah.

Only for Random to notice Guanidia is missing and he reacts like Guanidia is like... just an animal or small child?

He even says something to the effect of 'Has he escaped???'

Where the FUCK have you been, Wendie? She rejoins us here, at least

That's the SankT Leona Royal Family, I believe, but there door to that room is locked.

Guanidia informs Random there are infact a ton of Demon Wolfs in the room.

Even Random is terrified and they both try to quietly sneak back out.

The lights come back on for some reason so Random starts screaming.

First you fight one Demon Wolf. Easy enough. But then you fight two battles against three. You are actually allowed to lose here, which is very easy, and the scene continues on as normal, but I win >

Random screams for help between each battle.

The Guardians show up and slay the remaining 5 or so Demon Wolfs from the doorway in an absolutely incredible display of either reach weaponry or telekinetic sword abilities.

Random starts to flip out when he realises the hospital isn't safe, and Guanidia tells him to go on ahead.

Your walking speed is set super high for this part, too.

I recorded the following scenes on video, but they're not especially important to watch. I just wanted to catch some of the doofiness in video, including the jump.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LetUKJicIsw

The important thing to know is we narrowly saved Sarah from being killed again!

We wind up outside the hospital the next day, Guanidia suggesting we take a day off.

We buy a bunch of flowers for... reasons.

Sarah's in a new part of the hospital now, but it's not as large or packed as the prior section.

Demon God troll guy is here.

A bunch of the Guardians know Random by sight now.

An old dude rambles at Random for ages about dark powers and shit.

lol.

Old Man: The world is going to end soon.
Random: Maybe I shouldn't have told Sarah I was too tired?

Random yells this so loudly, apparently, that he makes the elf jump in shock.

Everyone gives Sarah their well-wishes.

Except for Wendie.

You can talk to Sarah multiple times here, she says a few different things, none of them very interesting, except for the second thing she says.

Hm. We give her the flowers we bought.

The Power of Love isn't very great in this series, huh. Good thing it's not called Love Power.

Anyway, we're not left with a clear idea of what to do, but what you are meant to do is wander over yonder.

Random is recognised and invited to a council meeting where the Guardians are discussing their 'ripost.'.

Apparently the Guardians here think the Dark Order is a demonic cult. You're probably thinking something similar. Or like, a necromancer cult or an evil god cult. Hahahahahaahhahaha!

How CUTE! You're so completely and utterly wrong if you thought any of those things.

The Grand Commendanter is one of gamings greatest villains for a reason.

Anyway, Random starts to think to himself some nonsense about never imagining the Evil Tower could have so much evil power. Someone asked if he ignored it. I question why Random was meant to know jackshit about the tower to begin with. Anyway, he wonders if it's related to the Chanterless bunch and...

Random wants to come along with the Guardians and after a bit of back and forth about whether he's capable of keeping up (Random whines about how many Demon Wolfs he slew) they say if he can show off his moves with a sabre, they can make a better judgement.

They stick Random with THE OVERPRICED SLAB OF SHEET METAL! It's no Athors Co. Sword!

They even say to give Random an exemplary one and it still sucks ass, apparently.

Random is rejected.

Shit sucks Random.

"trained for that!"

Random doesn't take these two guys telling him this crap very well.

We speak to Sarah and she says she'll basically all better and regain her skills and 'habilities' within a few hours.

She sounds like she's dying but she just goes to sleep.

Everyone leaves and when they're outside, Random asks Luci what she's going to do this afternoon, and she says she'll be going to the library.

No one gives a fuck what Leanda and Wendie are going to do, so no one asks them.

Random says he's tired and is going to rest, which surprised Luci.

Guanidias like 'No way, I ain't tired. I'm gonna wander the plains a bit!'

Luci is very confused but she leaves, and when she does...

Guanidia says thats stupid and the girls won't like it. Also it'll be extremely dangerous.

Sabre!"

"at range !!!
Argggg !!!!!"

I agree, Random. Wholeheartedly.

Guanidia is eventually convinced to tag along.

Now we just go around asking NPCs about magic swords. Lol. This game is so weird and funny sometimes.

RIP.

We can't enter the library right now, so I guess we're skipping it.

There's a new place at the end of SankT Leoan's Main Avenue.

Not really anyone or anything interesting, though.

Random says no thanks.

When you leave the store you buy the flowers at now, you get this offer. Yes, there's an apricot tree tending mechanic and I believe the tree CAN probably WILL die on us if I am not careful... or maybe only the LP3 tree dies? Only get the one tree too.

Hey, I love dramatic endings!

This guy talks shit about the SankT Leona Sabre weaponsmith too. A man after our heart.
Don't have the time to visit those places for swords, though.

Eesh.

Wendie brutally owns Bruce.

Bruce's grandson has moved in cos his family died in the attack. This is something a lot of NPCs say. That they lost loved ones or friends or even their entire families. Anyway, this guy also says Bruce will never use his warehouse for anything so our hard work was pointless.

The resident of piano house implies he is a second class citizen.

For some reason this old guy is running the bazar now.

HE TELLS US TO BUY THE SANKT LEONA SABRE

A few Guardians and stuff do that. Dumbasses.

But here's the place we actually want.

Guanidia argues with this guy and Random for every step of the conversation, but Random seems set on buying Metallist.

Metallist sucks. It is its own element though.

What you're meant to do next is not signposted at all, but you can see above a single tree just north of SanKT Leona. You're somehow meant to figure out you're meant to go and use that tree when you never could before.

is blowing!"

So uh... This... is... uh... It's a forced grinding segment.

We fight weak random encounters for XP. When you earn 1300, I think it is, we're free to go. The game does NOT tell you when you are free to go.

Pythons are by far the most common encounter and are worth 60ish XP.

If you try to leave before getting all the required XP, then Random says this classic line. Almost makes this grind worth it.

This is probably the second most common encounter and it's worth 97XP... if the bees don't flee.

Sometimes you get these, and theyre both worth 69 and 68XP respectively.

Also you might have thought that rest option was nice, but Random says he'll limit himself to 4 rests. Not that you really need them anyway.

After grinding for a while, we're free to leave. Again, the game does not tell you when you are.

Sarah's boobs are in a seperate shot, thankfully for only one dialogue box.

There's a bit more dialogue than I've shown in both scenes but it's pretty inane I love you I love you too Kiss Kiss kind of bull.

I do like this though. He chills out and decides to not be such a gloryhound after spending some time with someone he cares about and was worried for.

Hey! How come he can enter the inn from behind and we can't! Cheatir!

Speaking of Metallist, it has been switched out for Metallist, the best sword in the game.

??????????????????? does he know????????????????????????

Good luck with that.

Leanda and Random exchange the blandest pleasantries imaginable.

This guy asks if Random isn't too young for that sort of thing and...

He's already bragging about it.

Hit a nerve, seems like.

Let's go visit Luci. She actually has something really important for us.
She's found some interesting old books in long dead demoniac languages and shit.

Two things here. Why the insanely huge timescale of EVERY 250,000 years!? That's enough time for humanity to nuke itself to 0 and rebuild to modern day society like 20 times over with a few thousand years to spare just in case we're fuckups at getting better at speedrunning this shit.

The other thing is I don't know why we get this information in this game. It has little to do with this game, directly. Maybe just to confirm the Dark Order might be onto something and aren't just nutjobs? This information would be much more relevant in LP3.
Supposedly no one knows about this shit but Luci just finds it at the library in ancient demon tongues that are hard to read even for her and translates it in one afternoon.

Well, fine. Whatever.

At least Random had a good day. To good days from here on out!

It's the GRAND Commendanter!! He would probably crack your fucking skull open and drink your brains straight if he heard you calling him merely Great!

The orc asks why they're in the hopsital of all places.

The other priest seems to think they're gonna find an elf for certain, but Priest #1 is not so sure.

I'm seriously leaving out like 90% of the dialogue for this whole scene as these three morons wander into empty rooms and go Huh??? No one here?? Maybe this room? Huuh!! The Hall way is quiet. Look a room over there! Is that an elf? Yes it is an elf. We were looking for elves. Right I nearly forgot.

Anyway, because they're dumbasses they fuck up and beat Elf-Lexus to death.

They enter Sarah's room (which she shares with another elf girl) and the scene ends.

Then why the fuck is it lit like dawn then.

Random says he thinks he knows where the bottles all went????????????

???????????????????????????????????????????????????
????????????????Did Coryool eat them???????????????????
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Oh my god.

If you say NO like a normal human being, she sayd

Too true. Thank you, Wendie.

We take her with.

You cannot ask Leanda, as she says she wants to take her bath alone.

Outside, Random discusses the Guardians departing and then says he wants to buy more flowers for Sarah.

We head into the hospital.

Wendie somehow psychically knows what has happened all of a sudden when some guy whines about crap.

Why is this Guardian named??? Why does she have the same name as the party's terminally ill friend???

Anyway, we're about to witness one of the most tonedeaf NPCs imaginable. This is one of my favourite dialogues because of that.

Specifically the young and sexy elves part.

The guard that was asleep in this room tries to make out the three morons were ninja types.

Oh, is that the only restriction on visiting crime scenes? Huh.

I do like that it's the famous night already.

Just some more incredible dialogue from the brain geniuses here.

The other elf girl is dead, but Sarah's missing. After a short dialogue that doesn't really go anywhere, Random tears out of the room.

He seriously runs the whole way out in like 2 seconds flat. It's EXTREMELY fast.

I'd hopes to do this whole sequence in one update but we're seriously running super long as it is. So we'll have to stop here. But hey, at least we got a ton done and even saved our friends, a dog and Buckley. Speaking of...

Thanks to Errant, from the Aldorlea Discord for spending so much time discussing this series with me.... and making this image.

What really got me about this was when one of the mods saw it and said "You're bad."

the end
