Update 38: Dreadnought

Now then.

Time to take down the last Imperial Dragon.

Here’s how our party is doing. Even though the started at level 43, they gained 7 levels during this time. Dragons feed a ton of experience to the party! Oh and yes, I am abusing the hell out of Punishment for this fight.

Hm. Fancy that. I didn’t expect such a dragon to actually resemble part of the British Navy. That name was more accurate than I would have guessed.
A bri-wha now?
No time for that, look sharp!

How cowardly!

Video: Dreadnought

Cute, but that won’t stop us!

Before we fight Dreadnought, we have to deal with this dragon first.

There’s not much to Bullet Dragons. All they’re here for is to wear you down before you fight Dreadnought.

Light strike array!

Such cowardly tactics won’t work here!

A quick slash!

Is that all?
Uh, looks like it’s diving in for one last attack!
Ha ha! Don’t you worry!

BATTER UP!

Try not to spend too much time and resources on this fight.

Oh come on!

Because there’s another one coming up.

It goes down fairly easily as well.

I’d like to see you try!

That. Is a lot of guns and cannons.
I never thought fighting an actual battleship would be something I experienced, but these dragons keep playing with expectations.
Feh! It might look impressive, but we’ll tear it apart all the same!

Say hi to the motherfucking battleship dragon!

Dreadnought has a pretty diverse skillset and a lot of ways to damage the party.

I’m going to have the party set up here.

Buront will basically spam Guardian throughout the fight to stop Dia from dying.

Don’t even think about it!

Ooh. That looks like a nice big one.
Just what are you talking about? And why are you staring at the sky like that?

Take it down, Haru! ...Maybe we should think about a song for Nila.
Absolutely out of the question!

There are actually unused buffs in the code that would increase the INT stat when cast. The thought of that on a Mage is frankly terrifying.

I’m not sure how well my blade will deal with a battleship, but we don’t have any other choice here.

Whoa! You okay there!? You just took that shot head on.
I... I’m fine, don’t worry.

Dreadnought can hit pretty hard if you aren’t particularly prepared.

Now I’ll have Dia dish out the Punishments since her setup is done. There’s no point in using EX on this since it won’t increase Punishment’s damage.

Hmm, yes. If I just make a tear right above it...
Do I want to know what you’re planning...?
It’ll be a wonderful surprise!

Nila will do her thing of nuking down Dreadnought.

I... suppose if you say so. I myself will just go for a more straightforward approach.

And Haru will slice it down as well.

METEOR STRIKE!

BOOM! Good grief, Nila!

I- WH- HOW!? WHY!?
Oh. See, just sending people through those tears seemed like a waste of some perfectly good magic. So I decided to experiment with sending other objects through them!
And a meteor was your first thought!?
Ha ha! What can I say? I guess Stella’s techniques just stuck to my mind like that!
Your mindset is quite frightening.
Though effective.

Fancy beating you here!

Goddamn, Haru is dishing out some wonderful damage as well!

Despite what the name and Dreadnought’s aesthetic would have you think, Shell Shot is a melee attack for some reason.

Ironic. Your Bloom was instrumental in engineering your doom.

That’s some pretty strong damage coming from a support.

Dreadnought doesn’t have much left going for it.

Now let’s see. Oh, that one looks perfect!
No! I am putting a stop to this before you kill us all! I did not take charge of this world a thousand years ago, just to have people like you dumping meteors on this planet as you please!

I sunk your battleship!
Ha, come on Telos. Learn how to live a little!
What you had planned would have done the complete opposite of that!

And uh. That’s the entire fight. Really. Barely got to show off what it did. It’s not even like there were absurdly broken strategies being abused here, the classes in this game are just that strong. And unlike most other Imperial Dragons, Dreadnought doesn’t have a “stronger version” you can fight.

Which actually made it pretty annoying to figure out a way to sandbag hard so I could showcase the fight properly.

This is the party I ended up coming up with. Nila and Haru are out for very obvious reasons, you saw how fast they shredded Dreadnought. Ark in her current state would have utterly destroyed it as well, so Stella was stuck as my remaining damage dealer since she was unlikely to vaporize Dreadnought. And then I shoved in all the support classes.

Oh and I’m not abusing Punishment here, so Dia is purely on support duty unless a good opportunity for Punishment comes up. By the way, I really recommend having some Somanels on hand for this boss fight.

Video: Dreadnought

Incoming!
Take cover!

Nice try, but I say not!

We don’t have time to deal with you!

Bullet bat!

What a dud.

Even with this team they go down pretty easily.

How many more does it have!?
Two too many.

Second verse, same as the first.

No one’s eating anyone today!

On with the main show.

Stella and Dia are going to set up. I’ll have Edward fight for as long as possible until the party starts taking damage, at which point he’ll fall back on healing duty. Buront will protect the party as best he can during the entire fight.

Sinking slash!

Take down that battleship, you two! Woo!

By this team’s standards that pretty good damage. Though yes, this fight will take considerably longer than the first fight.

...Those cannons missed?
Be thankful for small miracles, I suppose.

Now I’m going to have Stella chop away with Purge. To sandbag even further, she won’t be using EX just to avoid skipping mechanics. I’ll use EX in some cases, just not to get a 50% damage boost.

Might as well have Dia make the party a bit harder to kill.

Um uhhh. Fooortify? Never really practiced this song all that much.

Dreadnought will only use Shell Shot and Mana Storm for the first few turns. You’ll really want to see Shell Shot more often as Mana Storm hits the entire party pretty hard.

Deflector swing!

Pretty hefty damage on its own.

Now that Dreadnought is laying the hurt on the party, I’ll have the supports focus on healing.

It’s like nothing happened at all.
To us only.
Don’t worry about us. We can hold out for a bit longer!

As long as I’m around, you shouldn’t have to worry as much!

I noticed Stella and Buront were running low on Mana, so I sent boosted Mana Waters their way.

Wh-what’s it doing!?
Nothing good, no doubt.
I suggest bracing yourselves for when it finally decides to unleash all that energy.

Now we get into the main mechanic of this fight. Dreadnought will charge up for its special attack, Wave Cannon. It’ll just use Shell Shot and Mana Storm for a random number of turns, but once Dreadnought decides to charge up, it’s locked into a fixed rotation of skills.

If any party members are at low LIFE when you see this message, heal up fast.

My axe! I forgot how to use my axe!
Can’t reach my medicine!
Mi do re?
How irritating.
Of all the times to get butterfingers.

Dreadnought will then use a much stronger version of Silent Wind, which has a 100% infliction rate instead of 20%. Your only defenses against it at this point are to Guard, which lowers the chance to 90%, or use the Princess’s Demon Cage to lower it to 75%. You don’t get Skill Seal resistance equipment until much later in the game. Yeah, not great odds. There’s a reason why I said to pack a bunch of Somanels, purely for this mechanic.

I have Stella toss a Somanel to Edward, but I have everyone else guard.

Because it follows up Silent Wind with 30mm Cannon. You absolutely do not want to be at low LIFE by the end of this turn!

I think it’s getting ready to fire!
Brace yourselves, everyone!

Because on this turn, it’ll finally unleash Wave Cannon.

Everyone okay?
A little singed, but I’ll live.
Any less resistance and I feel like I would have been vaporized.
Then let’s finish it off before it does that again!
H-Hang on...

Which hits very hard! You can probably facetank it if your LIFE is high enough, but if not, use a Guard, or even an EX-boosted Guard if you aren’t sure you’re going to survive it.

I... I can fix this...!

This is why I had Stella toss him a Somanel, so I could immediately fire off a Miracle Cure after Wave Cannon.

This was the result of a plan that didn’t work out well. I thought about making use of Punishment here, then I realized that Miracle Cure would outspeed Dia, so I EX-boosted Punishment in a desperate attempt to have Dia deal damage before Miracle Cure went off.

Hand of the gods!

Alas, I forgot that Punishment’s speed factor was rather low.

Argh, I had such plans...
Maybe you could have held off on the healing for a moment?
Oh sure. Sounds like a great idea. One that one of my old guild mates tried to pull off once and died shortly afterwards.
Yeesh, point taken.

Fortunately the turn after firing Wave Cannon is a breather, as it casts Repair. After that, it’ll return to firing off Shell Shots and Mana Storms until it charges up for Wave Cannon again, and follows the attack pattern loop again.

So to reiterate, this is Dreadnought’s fixed attack rotation:

Charge Wave Cannon
Silent Wind
30mm Cannon
Fire Wave Cannon
Repair

And anytime that rotation isn’t happening, it’s just using Shell Shot and Mana Storm.

It’s time to walk the plank, matey!

And down goes Dreadnought! The fight has quite a bit going on if you don’t instantly nuke it into oblivion. Wave Cannon is the main thing to worry about, so try to have high LIFE when the special attack goes off.

Now let’s get back to the actual save file we defeated it on.

Yeah go on, get outta here!
A seemingly mighty battleship, only to turn out to be a rowboat instead.
I just realized. That was the last Imperial Dragon wasn’t it? All that’s left are the smaller ones.
Ha! Then cleaning up the rest of the small fries should be a piece of cake!
...I suppose so. Though something tells me it’s far too soon to celebrate like that. Hm?
Something up?
...Just a bit of an odd sensation. No idea what it was.
Well you do have a point about it being too soon to celebrate. We’ve slain hundreds of dragons, but doing so was not a fast task. If there are plenty of dragons left, doing so will surely take lots of time as well.
But with the last Imperial dead, I’m sure we can take a moment to relax and celebrate! Let’s go tell everyone the good news!

Fade to black.

Report to Setis now. She must prepare a song immediately.
Yes!!

The officer leaves.

Give unto us your sacred blessing…

Setis sings.

A flash of white.

All the women of Marlleaire thank you.
Oh, it was no trouble at all!
Thanks to you, the barrier is back up. We'll be safe a while.
In thanks, go northwest, to our sacred grounds. You may pass there. An ancient sound is enshrined with the Ronam... retrieve it. You have brought new color and life to Marlleaire...
Again, I want to thank you. Thank you very much.

The two leave.

Oh my! That barrier really did a number on the Bloom around here!
It’s just... all gone!
Hmm, you think we could ask the queen to set these up around the world?
That... might be too troublesome for her. Asking her to strain her vocal chords and having to travel to and build giant Ronams around the world.

If you compare the bottom screen of these two images, you can see just how much Bloom gets wiped out. This is why I said not to worry too much about cleaning up the Bloom around Marlleaire and the Tower of the Gods as the game does it for you after killing Dreadnought.

But, Odyssey... We've decided we must allow you in. Please come in.
Ooh, you hear that! You two won’t have to hide your identities anymore!
That’s a relief. This hat was getting itchy.
I bet Edward will be really happy to hear this as well!

There's no reason to believe it. I've read too many fairy tales...

It's a tropical paradise here, but you don't seem ready to rest, eh!
Oh don’t worry, we’ll relax for a bit, but...
After this, we’ll have to go and deal with the rest of the dragons.

Despite the name, it's definitely tilted and in danger of falling over. So it's been reinforced on the left and right... Ahahaha...
Wait, the other two towers were basically scaffolding!?
Maybe that theory of the tower constructors having bad ideas or being inefficient wasn’t too far off the mark...

But I still get mad when I think of my ex-husband sometimes, even now...
I’d advise not to dwell on him too much and try to focus more on your current conditions.

Sold some materials to unlock Sergeant Capes for sale. Which is nice.

Nothing like a relaxing soak after sinking a battleship, huh?
Yes, it’s quite nice. I could spend all day in here.
Indeed- um. Telos, are you okay? You look rather tense, even though this is supposed to be a place for leisure.
Maybe demons don’t know the meaning of relaxation?
That is absolutely not the reason, and we do know what that means, thank you very much! ...My apologies, I know that all the Imperial Dragons are dead, but I just still have this sinking feeling of impending doom. It’s enough to needle at my mind, and I’m not quite sure on how to express it.
Mm. Well if something bad’s about to happen, I’m sure we can deal with it by bathing it in fire. Worked like a charm last time, hmm?
And if this problem happens to be entirely unrelated to dragons or monsters?
We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

A snorkel what.

Queen Setis, what are you thinking? I can't believe it!!
If you have issues with that, take it up with her, not those two.
Thanks, but. We should probably leave. Like right now.

Those must be the sacred grounds the queen mentioned.
Perhaps we should take a trip there after handing in our mission report.

Due to that, the Bloom is mostly in check.
We saw. All that Bloom, just gone like that.
A shame that couldn’t extend further, but at least no one around here has to worry about it anymore.
Wait. Just how strict is this barrier?
But, we're not completely sealed off from the world. Air has to get in!

Hee hee! I'll redouble my efforts! You won't be sorry about this!

I should be happy, but I have mixed feelings...
I’d advise not trying to burden yourself with every problem available. That never leads to anything good.

Hah! Only a weakling would boast about that! Hahahahaha!!
Dare I ask what you’ve defeated that’s more impressive?
Maybe it’s something stronger than an Imperial Dragon?
...
Pretty sure nothing like that exists. I hope it doesn’t at any rate.

Here comes adventure! Well, but, my life here is hard to just give up...
You’ll have plenty of time to decide on something like that.

Sage's house up north, Inn at the volcano, Mystery at the center... I wonder if you've seen all of them?
We have.
Though we have little idea what to do with that mystery.

However, merely being Odyssey does not justify allowing their men entry!
Shandora, you know it as well as I... This is a country for and of women. But the threat to this world requires the full cooperation of all nations. If that requires men to enter Marlleaire, that cannot be helped.
So that's it, then?!
...Shandora. I understand how you feel. But calm yourself.
... I beg your pardon...

Shandora leaves.

Yeesh. What’s her problem?

The truth is... Shandora has not always lived in this country. She has had wretched experiences, and came to Marlleaire despising men. So you must understand why she is so stubborn about allowing them entry.
I see.
Not just she, but many others here, hate men, some with good reason. Odyssey... Marlleaire will assist you however possible. Even unto allowing your male members entry. However, be mindful that many of us feel as Shandora does.
W-We’ll be sure to keep out of their way.

Let’s talk to her again.

A special Ronam is enshrined deep within. Bring it forth. I pray for your safety on this journey...

That’s just directions to an optional dungeon we can now access.

We can actually talk to Shandora here, though she’ll have different reactions depending on your party makeup.

If you have only female party members in the group:

I will help you out. But I have a strong reaction to men. If you bring along a man again, though... I'll try controlling myself.

However, you need a male party member in the group in order to trigger a sidequest.

Um. Hi.
Quiet down!
Sorry. I know I'm being rude, but... I don't want to talk to men, Odyssey or not. Get out of my sight!

Odyssey leaves.

This was productive.

We never said anything like that.

Marlleaire despises men. You brought some. If you women accept men... Then I don't accept you!

We can technically complete this quest now, though it involves going to a dungeon we haven’t been to before to get the items we need to complete the quest. So uh, we’ll put that off for later because we’re about to progress the game and don’t really have time for optional dungeons right now.

Don’t let the door hit you on our way out.

It’s nice to get some appreciation after something like that.
So uh, what do we do?
It’s probably for the best we don’t meddle. I’m not sure how we would handle something like that anyways.
The way she worded it sounded a bit like a challenge. I wonder if we should take her up on it. Besides, considering the thanks we just got and how others are pretty appreciative of us, her statement about Marlleaire wasn’t all true.
I... suppose so. Still, I’m not sure we’re suited for the task. And I’m not really comfortable dealing with something like that.
I don’t even know where we would begin on that front.
Perhaps we should let her stew before we do anything further. Something like that is a very deep wound that won’t be healed so easily.
A wise course of action I would say.

Instead we’ll finish off the update with this quest, which we only now got the ability to complete.

Yes we did. What exactly happened?
I want to help my daughter recover her voice.

Official artwork of Dreadnought and the Bullet Dragon.

Concept artwork of Dreadnought. Its old look was even more on the nose with the battleship theme.

The artist commentary was also stating (either joking or being serious, I couldn't tell) that there's actually an entire crew of dragons onboard Dreadnought, maintaining it as well. Said dragons are Bullet Dragons, Screw Dragons, Deck Dragons, and Bridge Dragons.
