S01E23: The Common, the Insipid and the Destroyer of Scrolls.

On the way to our next destination, I decide to check in at Metrolian Man's place.

He still calls us newbies!

We leave and just a bit south of there, we reach our actual destination.

Damn her indeed. This is one of the few real challenging bosses in the game. It's not on a superboss level still, but... It's formidable, even at level 50. Most everyone but Wendie gets KO'd repeatedly. The Land Predators I've spoken about before. With Love Me Spam and defenses up they're not tooo dangerous but double hits from two of them will still add up, especially when you have the Dawn Hunter there. The Dawn Hunter is brutal even with your defensive buffs up. Anyone can and will go down quickly if you don't take out the Land Predators fast. Also these guys are all much faster than you. Good luck!

Luci says well yeah we were in their nest. We're bird murderers.

Time to sort out what's going on in Chanterless Church's 'entrails.'

We can't go the way we once did and Random is all like well let's leave then. But this is a trick. He's trying to trick you.

While the magic circle was here before, the skull and candle were not. When we use them...

We find ourselves back here!

These show up as a random encounter here. We actually could have encountered them here the first time we came but uh... while I think winning is doable... and good for grinding... it would probably take some special tactics or they'd absolutely destroy you with the spells they sling.

I mean seriously, they did a lot of damage to me -now- and drained everyones MP. Look at that XP though. They have at least a few hundred HP. I'm honestly not sure how you win it early on but I have seen people talk about doing it.

That bastard grim reaper has wandered off on me. I spend a long ass time waiting for him to come back to where I can reach him.

So... here's another of the superbosses.

He is quite powerful, and so is the 666 spell. This is -after- Luciana had buffed everyone's defenses, and she has 999 Mind to boot. Also Love Me was used a couple times. I wonder if it ignores defenses...? Anyway, it oneshots Luci and hits everyone else pretty hard.

Also Doguras join the fight after a few turns but we just wipe them out quickly. Actually he dies the same turn as the Dogura's. He has at least 6k HP though, by my reckoning so it takes a few turns where he hits us with nothing spells and then 666 devastates everyone.

I get everyone back on their feet and... if he doesn't cast 666 much...

He'll go down without much more fuss. We killed the Guardian of Dark Souls everybody! Now there's Dark Souls for everyone! Thank you Indy! Something to be thankful to Laxius Power for.

Lol. Something about the phrasing here just strikes me as funny.

Anyway, that's all we can do here so we Egress out.

No one really says much of interest, though the mayor does seem happier without acknowledging anything was going on. There's no reward either.

The Joker!

Anyway, we return to SankT Leona.

To the... *shudders* SankT Leona Weaponsmith...

He has this ILLEGAL backroom for animal fights, remember. And I want to point out that the people here and the party know it is illegal and how violent animal fights are. One NPC lady here basically talks about how horny animal on animal violence makes her.

And yet they shall take part without complaint by forcing their VERY sapient pets to battle Pokemon style.

We'll enter Guanidia first.

Cinch fight at level 50. When we first arrived in SankT Leona, Peki kicked Guanidia's ass.

So, this would be an extremely RNG dependent fight if you tried to do it as is, which is what Errant initially suggested. Tamed Krieger spams a powerful ice spell and Guanidia is weak to ice. I don't think the pets have any gear at all that protects from ice and... well, yeah. RNG. He likes to use it a lot. Twice in a row and you're gone unless you do nothing but heal.

HOWEVER I discovered Guanidia can use the Isold Pendant in battle which raises his ice resistance. With the best gear and that the ice spell... still does half his HP or a bit more. But that's manageable with Guanidia's moves. He's a good debuffer and one of his attacks also drains HP in addition to debuffing.

So it becomes a simple fight after that discovery.

Also the Mind BIOS gear gives Guanidia a great new move. What's not listed here is that it also debuffs their speed and mind. Also, their resistance to a few elements. AND it drains HP.

The Manticora is an extremely simple battle.

He predicts his Golem, Kran, will be perfectly suited for defeating a sludge.

Luci says Guanidia has skills that may surprise a golem and Sarah says YEAH LIKE HIS DISGUSTING FUCKING BULLSHIT LIKE GLUE

Another straightforward battle. Debuff, debuff, debuff and then kamikaze.

If they're really the weakest how come we didn't fight any in the games opening area, huh? It was all hill chickens, common scorpions, trolls and hounds!

lol

He calls out his dragon Gatryor and...

Hahaha, I honestly love the shit-talking in these games. It's probably what Indy is the best at by far, the Engrish (and even when his English improves a lot, the ESL vibe) somehow heightens a lot of what would be very banal combeacks too, but like there's also plenty of genuine masterstrokes. As Errant and I have discussed, sometimes even -Sarah- and Wendie will deliver some absolute masterstrokes during their inane banters.

Anyway, Guanidia says he was thinking the same thing, which really gets under Luca Blight's skin.

War Dragon is also extremely straight forward. Debuff, debuff, kamikaze.

Next we fight MICHY!

Hahahaha

quote:

Cow Dragoon (very rare)
Little and ridiculous creature, the cow dragoon is considered a dragon due to some particularities only related to dragons.
The cow dragoon is a tricky animal that can wield awesome spells.

Hahahaha

Anyway the guy says well, holy shit imagine what you'd do with a dragon or an orc.

Then just to be a shit, Sarah badgers Random into saying Guanidia is slow while she is fast. Fuck you Sarah.

Jesus. Calm down.

The reward, which Luca admits Guanidia probably does not really need, is the best body armour for the pets. It'll help Herasia though!

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention. The Mind BioS (jaws) are NOT Guanidia's best weapon. They're his AND Herasia's only off hand slot item.

And the Mind BioS (head) is one of the only head slot items available for either Guanidia and Herasia!

Anyway, I switch over to Herasia and gear him up with everything including our new win. Guanidia can win these battles easily at level 50 without the Mind BioS stuff, I did it back before the Pit of Fire... But lost with Herasia. Herasia needs them a lot more.

SEND IN THE CAT!

So, something I haven't mentioned much is one of the reasons why Herasia blows is he has very few skills that are not shifting between modes. He has a No Damage mode that buffs his defenses and resistances a load but renders him incapable of much damage. He has an attack mode which i think tanks his defense but thats much less noticeable. You don't get any warning about the downside, just the boosts, even when you use them.

The Mind BioS stuff gives him an actual good skill to use, the same one Guanidia gets. So it's a real blessing for him.

Herasia defeats the krieger as well...

And then the manticora...

lmfao

hahahaahahahahahahahaha

I seriously wish that exchange came only after the end of this tournament because i seriously would have ended the update on it. But alas!

Anyway, Herasia fights the golem next. This is the enemy that really fucks up Herasia without the Mind BioS gear. For some reason it double hits now, against Herasia. It did not do that for Guanidia.

With the Mind Jaws attack and in his attack mode, he drains so much HP that the golem becomes a chump.

Herasia takes care of the War Dragon even faster than Guanidia did...

And the Dragon Cow is OUT! AGAIN! We get a second Scaled Fur for our trouble.

One last stop for this update. The last (non-dungeon) superboss. This is from one of the fanmade add-ons.

A library that has a few shiny pages in it.

Also this, and a few spell scrolls.

The first two floors are identical but for a save point on the second, and different loot.

But at the top...

Hm?

The old man says he'll give us a key to the cabinet in the lower half of the room if we beat him.

So, immediately we can tell most of these enemies are no more than a distraction. Only Vankov and the Doom Towers matter. Also it's really funny to me he said seven memories and then picks five and then he goes uhm err.... Doom Tower, a random encounter, twice!

This battle is a DPS race, pure and simple. You have to kill Lazandra before about 5 or 6 turns or he casts Lazandra's Gift which will wipe the party WITHOUT FAIL. There is no defense against it, afaik.

Everything else is a distraction. Buff and focus incredible amounts of fire on Lazandra. This can be tricky with the two Doom Towers and Vankov casting spells that cause Shock, which has a pretty good chance (base 70%) of working before you take resistances and weaknesses into account.

I've beaten Lazandra with my standard party before, but this time I took Errant's advice and switched out Sarah for Guanidia. Guanidia's Glue counts as Metallist which Lazandra is weak too, so it debuffs him a lot as well. And it reduces resistance to Metallist. Meaning it lets Random absolutely destroy him. Wendie casting Attack Up on herself a couple times with her current set up lets her attack twice, often critting for 999 damage, and doing 500ish if not. Lazandra, like most of the major bosses, still only has a bit above a few thousand HP.

When Lazandra falls, the rest die easily, even if it takes a while with so much HP to burn through.

Well let us check it out first. Fuck your Gift spell though. I hate it. And you.

The addon author was stupid and does not tell us what we actually got.

But we got a copy of every single book in the game. Even one we have not gotten yet, since it's in Balthus Cave I believe.

Also this.

Hope you used the other Shiny Pages beforehand, lol. Anyway that's it for this...

Let's go look at an event that occurs at Baretta's when you hit... 4k battles. Yes, 4k battles.

Random comes off a bit embarrassed as he says okay but that's about it. Not sure why Indy even bothered with this.

If you talk to her a second time...

What do you mean Random. Shut up.

Later...

The escape from battle sound effect plays and he and his wife disappear.

The door that was behind him is firmly locked and the other rooms are empty of anything of interest.

Yes. That is exactly what happened. At the 9901-10000 battles mark, he runs away when you come to talk to him. This is so funny to me honestly but I hope anyone doing this remembered to save after fighting thousands of battles but before talking to him or, well... you just wasted a lot of time.

Come to think of it. There is another way this could all come to a waste of time. See, Indy thinks of... everything.

I will propose two unlikely but very plausible scenarios that could result in what I will shortly show you.

1. You played this game before and know there's a 10k battle quest, -and- know about the two 'stores' of large amounts of of encounters that will get you close to or well over the 10k mark when they're depleted, so you don't need to check your progress.

2. Remember when I first came down this way and talked to this guy and said I got killed by a nest of enemies? That was the Dawn Hunter and two Land Predator fight. Now, imagine you've just reloaded and decided huhhh I got nothing out of that trip that way so I shall not make that trip again and just get 10k battles before I bother again. Someone might have told you about the two monster stores or maybe you're just somehow good at keeping track. So you don't speak to him until you know you have over 10k. Actually, there's a couple other places that tell you how many fights you've been in like Yveen's Oracle in the Upper West. I think the Orb of Knowledge guys do too?

So. If you talk to Metrolian man for the first time after getting 10k victories... this happens:

Yep. He runs away in that case too! You're fucked with no way around it (besides editting this event) in that case!

But let's get on with this.

Then he immediately shuts up.

He gripes for a while but the party doesn't give a shit.

And tells us to go upstairs to see something even more amazing than any reward ever could be.

The wife is not interesting, and neither are the backrooms or the small second floor.

What the hell

we go into the time portal.

We're in the Mountain of Hunters, back at Rillia. When we came through looking for Kevin, you might remember me pointing out this sword in the lake.

Luci and Sarah have no problems going to it, however.

Sarah and Luci will both make failed attempts to pull the sword out. Actually, they do more than fail... They DESTROY THE SWORD IN THE ATTEMPT, and it shatters with a glass breaking sound effect. Luci at least says 'Oops, how did I do that???'
Then you have to live with this failure, or reload.

So we want Wendala to pull it out. Oddly Leanda is not an option, even if she's in the party.

Sarah starts to wonder why Random is having Wendie do it and not her and Random just says 'he's confident.'

Oh god, she's having a silent meltdown.

Random and the three girls, yes, even Luci, can all equip the Sword of Scrolls. It's not really suited to anyone right now though. I believe due to a bug, only Random and Luci can use a spell named Over Bolt while they have it equipped, but I'm not 100% on that.

We Egress... which dumps us in Rillia. We walk back to Metrolian Man to get the end of this small subplot.

There was no reward. At all. He just wanted to show us some old souvenirs or some shit.

Metrolian Man is the Worst.
