Update 40: Treasure Chest Woes

Moving from the top of the tower down to the basement... it's sad.
A rather pitiful fate for someone like her, I suppose. ...Not that I have much room to chastise her myself.
So uh, what’s the deal with you and her? Did ya like, know her or something before all this?
We... may have worked together before during a dragon invasion, just like in this current time.
Ha, so you’re a veteran of sorts?
...I suppose that’s one way to describe that portion of my eternal life.
Ooh, sounds like a spicy history! You’ve really got to tell us about this later.
I think that’s kind of prying a bit too much into her memories.
I appreciate the concern, but I’m willing to share the tales at a better time. And once I recall all the relevant details.

This NPC has a bit of a glitched textbox. Her first sentence didn’t display for some reason. Here’s what’s actually supposed be said.

I didn't know things like that Soulcannon existed in this world. I thought I could take this back and make Nevanplace richer... Now, what on earth do I do...?!
Pleroma still made other kinds of technology, right? Perhaps you could try taking from those instead of that... thing. Though whatever you bring back to Nevan, you’ll probably want to be very tactful about it.
...Telos, when you worked with her all those years ago, did she...?
Uh, you don’t have to answer that if you don’t want to.
I may as well grant her some peace of mind. No, she didn’t build anything quite like that, though she did try playing god in a desperate attempt to repel the invasion. As blasphemous as it was, I can’t say I begrudge her for that, and it did work all things considered. And history repeats in a sense, as like it or not, that weapon did buy us time to deal with the True Dragons. However, I wouldn’t say this part out loud to anyone else.

...That might mean more stair-climbing... ...nooo...
An entire kingdom just lost several of its people, an even bigger threat than the dragons and Imperial Dragons just arrived on Eden, and that’s what you’re concerned about!?
For what it’s worth, there is a miniature portal device outside to let you reach the top floor-
No no. Let him suffer. His moans of pain are quite amusing.

I’m pretty certain the entire world saw that turn of events. Hard to miss a huge spectacle like that.
My eyes are so bad I can barely see. I need a stronger prescription.
...Uh huh.

I’m afraid not. I’m sorry that we all had to witness that.
I wonder how many scholars here were in on building that cannon.
I don’t think any of the Rushe here would have agreed to building that. But I guess a few probably knew about it at the very least judging from those arguments we heard in Nevanplace all that time ago.
So that’s what they were talking about...

Did the ancients foresee what would happen?! Or, simply witness it...
So Telos, would you know anything about this?
Ha! An ancient. Never thought I’d ever live long enough to see myself be called one of those at the time. But yes, I can tell you right now that this was not the first time Niara attempted such an invasion. Nor the second time. Not I was around for the first time. I’m not that ancient.
Given how the world was doing fine before this specific invasion happened, I take it he failed the first two times?
Okay so if that’s true, we might be able to survive this. Hopefully.
Fortunately yes. I should know about the second time, I was there to take him down myself!
But whatever ya did back then wasn’t enough to stop him from coming back this time!
Nrrgh...! Y-yes, that much is true...
Then we’ll just have to make extra sure to take him down for good this time! If he failed all those other times, then we have a chance!

The Republic of Kazan is the newest nation. It's built on the will of legendary Hunter Doris Agouto. It has a short history but produces strong Hunters... like you.
We’ll just have to make sure to live through this to continue making said history!

Staying at the Inn to recover regrows Bloom. It's a vicious cycle!
Oh we know too much about that stupid cycle. Mrgrgr...

To tell the truth, I fear it could easily cover our whole world.
“Easily?” It already did!
And then we mulched a bunch of it! You really should check out the rest of the planet sometime, it’s looking a lot more healthy nowadays!

How can there be more than one of those? If it gets worse, I give up.
Is this the part where I remind him that there’s seven of them?
Oh come on, let’s not give him a heart attack.

Shall I read you the executive summary?

A refresher might be good to hear.
Then I will proceed. In short... "The Bloom makes prices go up." "Rare Bloom can take a lot of stepping on." "Until the Bloom is gone from a dungeon, Dragons can respawn." "The Bloom grows when you sleep." "The Bloom can regrow from nothing once." That's the end.

That last quote is a mistranslation. It’s actually supposed to say “Even if you cleared out an area of the Bloom once, it can still regrow there.” Which is referring to the world map, for the record. Thankfully, lawn mowed dungeons can’t regrow the Bloom unless you specifically use a Bloom Seed.

But when you came along, that Emille faded.
Don’t blame us for this. She was probably just jumped at the opportunity to wipe out the dragons. Any capable group of hunters that was strong enough to deal with large groups of them likely would have had her behave the same way.
So, would you know what she was really like? You probably know more about her than any of us.
Mmm, she had quite a bit of a one track mind. She really really hated dragons back then as well. That much hasn’t changed. Despite her attempt at playing god, I never thought she’d resort to using the souls of a kingdom to kill a True Dragon. Then again, I suppose five thousand years will change you. I should know...

But the Bloom just makes people angry... Now everyone's sad!
You uh, probably should have read the room better. I don’t think people want flowers to be the first thing on their mind in these times.

It's wonderful! A new one! Hey, if you beat it, bring me a sample!
...I make no promises.
What would you even do with that?

This is a mistranslation. He’s actually saying “Is it possible to poison a True Dragon? Even if it would work, how would you administer it?”

I probably doubt it! Didn’t work that well for Imperials when I tried, feh!
Ya never know. Maybe you just had bad poisons.
Not like we’ll know if it’s possible. Unless any of you have a better batch of poisonous chemicals on hand or something.

That’s all for Pleroma. Let’s see how the people at the Starry Site are doing.

If I wore this, I bet I'd get 80% more charm. Sex appeal up! Teehee ♪
...Those are some entirely random sentences to string together.

It wasn't a pleasant time... everyone involved was cursing and morose. Perhaps the world has already lost, and we are just marking time...
I wouldn’t say that. We’ve dealt with the Imperials, so we should be able to deal with the True Dragons!

For example, the Fighter's Arrow Follower relies on a bow Rogue to combo. Knights deal double damage with Save the Queen when a Princess uses Wanted. Try some of these out. Seeing them working will make your blood run hot!

One thing that does make 7th Dragon stick out from Etrian Odyssey is that it has more enforced synergies between classes with skills like these.

Incidentally there are some mistranslations here as well. Arrow Follower is supposed to be Arrow Link. Wanted is the name of the ailment the Princess inflicts, the actual skill name is Royal Order.

But if everyone gave in to that, we'd all always be alone! You'll get over it quickly. I suggest you sleep on it.
Well even then, I’d say some alone time would be nice to have every once in a while.

Now all that is done, let’s go and complete more side content. There’s still a lot of left in the game, but not much plot related dungeons left. We could beeline to the endgame right now, but I’ll pace it out so we can see all the side stuff before we finish up the game.

Here’s the party we’ll go with for this next portion of the game, which was decided randomly with some RNG websites.

Shouldn’t we be meeting up with Aitelle?
We should, but there’s something we put off for too long that we have to deal with first. You three just rest in Kazan for now while we deal with this.

I’ve had to put off this quest for too long, let’s finally deal with it.

Sorry we’re late, we’ve uh, had a lot of other stuff to deal with. Ren’s doing as well as she can, I hope? Eh heh?
Telos and I kept her as stable as we could in the meanwhile.
Mmm. Right, so what did you need us to do again?

I remember I saw a hidden room in the back there once. But the door is closed. To get in, you need to examine a torch in front. Hm, is that everything? That should be it. Anyway, it's hidden! So be sure to look absolutely everywhere! This is the only thing I'll ever ask of you! Please, bring me those herbs!

Phaedna Hollow is to the northeast of Northern Pesta.

There are 5 dragons on this screen, and they patrol around in set paths. All of the dragons are aggressive and will chase you down if they see you.

Let’s deal with them right now. This dungeon only has 1 type of dragon, so all these dragons are the same.

Orcanos Dragon

--Scale of an Orcanos.
-Rare: Bloom Seed - 5% Drop Rate.
--A seed with the power of the Bloom. Restores the Bloom to an area.

Poison: 50% Sleep: 25% Confuse: 25%
Paralysis: 50% Blind: 25% Stun: 100%

Skills:

Reflect Mirror: When taking damage from ranged INT-based attacks, all damage is nullified, and ranged INT-based Non-elemental damage is dealt to the attacker with a base damage of 150. Has a speed factor of 100. Counterattacks cannot miss. Has defensive priority.
Tail Uppercut: Deals 120% melee ATK-based Blunt damage to one party member. Has a 30% chance to inflict Paralysis. Has a speed factor of 90.
Icicle Rain: Deals ranged INT-Based Ice damage to all party members. Has a base damage of 80. Has a speed factor of 80.
Plasma Spike: Deals ranged INT-Based Lighting damage to all party members. Has a base damage of 75. Has a speed factor of 80.

Orcanos Dragons are actually a stronger version of a dragon we haven’t met yet since there are some side dungeons with weaker dragons we haven’t gone through yet.

These dragons are very unusual. The skillset is fairly standard, which isn’t the unusual part. It’s their behavior I’m talking about. Reflect Mirror is a very nasty gotcha for Mages, since their attack will be nullified and smacked in the face with a hard hitting magic counterattack. However this skill only ever gets used once in the entire battle. On the very first turn they’re in a fight. Which a Mage can easily avoid by just casting Concentrate, which a Mage with that skill would have done anyways. For the rest of the battle, a Mage will have absolutely nothing to worry about. Incidentally if these dragons catch you in a surprise attack, they won’t bother casting this at all and will go straight for attacking you.

Icicle Rain and Plasma Spike are 2 elemental AOEs it will slam your party with. Which skill they cast first is random, then it will alternate between the two between the rest of the battle.

So what about Tail Uppercut? It’s a single target physical attack, that’s barely that much stronger than a regular attack. It does have a chance of Paralysis, which isn’t that threatening since it only has a 30% chance to lock the victim out of their turn. Plenty of time to cure it too since it’s single target. As for when it uses this, there are only 2 circumstances where it will get used. If the Orcanos Dragon manages to catch you in a surprise attack. Or, it’s debilitated.

See, the Orcanos Dragon will actually change its behavior if you manage to inflict, Poison, Fear, or Masked Pain on it. Or hit it with any debuff. If any of that is true, it will always follow this routine no matter what:

quote:

-75% chance to use a basic attack (Targets the party member with the highest LIFE).
-25% chance to cast Tail Uppercut (Targets the party member with the highest LIFE).
Yeah. Not that threatening. If you have any of those infliction methods, or a Fighter, as that is the only class in the entire game that can inflict debuffs, these dragons are complete sitting ducks. It’s very weird.

As long as these dragons never manage to walk into your back, the first turn is pretty much a complete freebie to set up. Or completely send their AI to the dumpster by using one of the methods I’ve outlined to make them swap to a far less threatening routine.

Good thing Nila ain’t here! Don’t think she would’ve liked that.
Knowing her, she would have stopped and waited for that mirror to go down before blasting the dragon with the power of the elements.

NYAHAHA- whoa. Wow, does it seem like this dragon really isn’t taking this well?
Indeed! A chance to capitalize!

Here is my toppling strike!

And my axe upperlauncher! Now, finish it off, Edward!

Uh, sure!? Giant swing!

That all ya got? How dazed is this thing?

Yeah this dragon can’t do much to us. I’ll just skip ahead to the end of the slaughter since there’s no point in showing the rest of this.

Hee hee! Nice finisher. You’re really getting better at this!
Eh heh, thanks. That means a lot coming from you.

If you don’t have the methods to make this fight a joke, just come with some sort of defense for its elemental attacks, or bring a good bit of healing.

If you do have said methods, enjoy your nearly free wins.

The map to this dungeon isn’t too far from the entrance.

Another Orcanos Dragon kill got Buront a level up.

Shield Crush now deals 170% damage with a 34% stun chance.

The hell is this thing?
Hmm, maybe it opens up something further inside. Oooh! Or maybe it’s booby trapped!
Only one way to find out!
ARK, WAIT! Oh gods. Ohhhh gods.

Um... Edward? Not that I really mind, but I think you can let go of me now.
...Phew! Ark, you gotta be more careful messing around with old devices like that!
Now now, Edward. No harm was done. Fortunately, or unfortunately, nothing seems to have happened?
We can see that. Eh, maybe we should check this thing out later.

Laaaaaaame! Munch. Snarf. Still fresh at least!

Huh, this writing seems kind of recent.

These ruins were seen by the inspection team already and cleared. But my intuition tells me something's here. Thought there would be something to harvest...

How... helpful?
Guess we’ll just have to ah, inspect this place more thoroughly than them. They can’t have found everything in this place.

This side dungeon has some new enemies, though there’s not many new faces in here.

Oh I’m gonna be sick. The Bloom took over the bears too!?
Eww, I think I can see the petals sticking out from their fur.

Bloombear
Level: 53
LIFE: 420

DEF: 83
INT: 56
SPD: 58
Attack Type: Slash

-Rare: N/A
Damage Multipliers:
Slash: 100% Blunt: 100% Thrust: 100%
Fire: 100% Ice: 100% Lightning: 100%

Skills:

Gather Power: Multiplies the user's ATK by 150% for 2 turns. Has a speed factor of 100.

You’d think the combination of Bear + Bloom would be very dangerous. Especially since an earlier variety was outright called a Murderbear. In actuality, not so. Bloombears are really not that dangerous, especially compared to some of their earlier counterparts. They have a 35% chance of casting Gather Power at any time. And then they’ll try to bop someone with a regular attack if they cast that skill last turn. That’s it.

You really should know how to deal with these kinds of enemies by now.

Here’s the 2nd new enemy we can face here.

Narwhal
Level: 53
LIFE: 220
ATK: 135
DEF: 77
INT: 55
SPD: 56
Attack Type: Blunt
Attributes: N/A
Exp: 798

Item Drops:
-Normal: Spiral Horn - 30% Drop Rate.

-Rare: Pasture Meat - 20% Drop rate. Kill with Instant Death.

Skills:

Lethargic Voice: 25% chance of inflicting Sleep on the entire party. Has a speed factor of 75.
Sheepish Silence: 30% chance of inflicting Skill Seal on the entire party. Has a speed factor of 90.

Narwhals can be pretty deadly support enemies if they get lucky, as they have a 60% chance to cast any of their supporting skills. The other enemies in this area are really not that threatening, so these are the priority targets.

Ark actually got a level up from that.

At this point I took out all the dragons on the first screen, so I went back to take a rest.

Hey Ren, mind if we take a- oh right. The whole bedridden thing.
I’d chastise you, but really we all had the same idea here. Whoops.
We do have a house on the other side of the mountains, maybe we should just take a rest there instead, eh heh.

While Ren is bedridden, her inn is completely nonfunctional. I forgot about that part until now. So uh, you’ll have to head elsewhere if you want to rest at an inn. Which I do before heading back to Phaedna Hollow.

And here’s the last of the new enemies in this dungeon. Yep, that’s really it. There’s not even an old enemy being reused here, those 3 enemies are all that you’ll see in here.

Mandragora
Level: 53
LIFE: 160
ATK: 130
DEF: 70
INT: 54
SPD: 60
Attack Type: Blunt
Attributes: Small
Exp: 451
Gold: 53
Item Drops:
-Normal: Tangled Roots - 30% Drop Rate.
--Roots of a Mandragora.
-Rare: N/A
Damage Multipliers:
Slash: 200% Blunt: 100% Thrust: 100%
Fire: 100% Ice: 100% Lightning: 100%

Skills:

Call for Help: Summons 1 Mandragora. Has a speed factor of 100.

Mandragoras are just some of the trashiest of trash mobs. They don’t do much other than using basic attacks and occasionally summoning more of themselves for you to take down. They’re really weak that just rushing to clear them out or using AOEs can easily overwhelm their pitiful attempts to overwhelm you.

Oh but that’s not all. While these enemies aren’t that interesting on the surface, their AI certainly has some things to show us. In fact, let me just post the entire thing here.

Mandragora’s AI posted:

Conditions:
-If there are 5 or less enemies in the battle, and there are 8 or less enemies in the battle, jump to routine 2.
-If there are 5 or less enemies in the battle, jump to routine 1.
-If there are 8 or less enemies in the battle, jump to routine 2.
-Else, jump to routine 0.

Routine 0:
-55% chance to use a basic attack (Default targeting).
-35% chance to Call for Help (Summons 1 Mandragora).
-10% chance to Call for Help (Summons 2 Mandragoras).
Routine 1:
-55% chance to use a basic attack (Default targeting).
-45% chance to Call for Help (Summons 2 Mandragoras).
Routine 2:
-80% chance to use a basic attack (Default targeting).
-20% chance to Call for Help (Summons 1 Mandragora).
There are quite a few problems with their AI. First off, routine 1 was improperly defined. At no point will the first condition ever be false since there will always be less than 8 enemies in the battle, so it will always fire off. This means that routines 0 and 1 can never be reached. Most likely it was intended to make it so that routine is meant to check for between 5 and 8 enemies in the battle, but a mistake caused it to check for below 5 enemies instead of above, creating an entirely redundant check in the conditions, and creating a condition that can never be false.

Another issue is in the technical details of summoning. When the game is checking to see if an enemy can be summoned, it runs some calculations behind the scenes. The game will move the sprites together, and then see if it can place the sprite of the enemy being summoned on the screen without overlapping said sprite with the others, or have it placed partially offscreen, which would create some ugly cutoff. If the game cannot do that, the summon will fail. While the Mandragora’s sprite is small enough to fit lots of them onscreen, that won’t be the case if they’re paired up with Narwhals or Bloombears. Those enemies will have to be killed off for their summoning spam to be successful.

The final issue is that 7th Dragon’s engine cannot handle more than 7 enemies in the battle. The formation data won’t allow for it, and there’s no room in the game memory for more than 7 enemy entities. And yet the AI is checking for 8 or less enemies. In order to make that condition false, there would need to be at least 9 enemies in the battle, which just simply isn’t possible as the Mandragora’s sprite is too big to allow for 9 of them. Though it would be possible to fit 8 of those sprites on the screen.

That entire spiel about the behind the scenes nonsense with these plant enemies is the only remotely interesting thing about them. Really, what the heck happened here? Leftovers plans from earlier in development, maybe?

Ah! My treasure senses are tingling.

Right here!
Ooh! Good find, Ark!

There’s actually a secret passage to the next room right here.

Which leads to this isolated chamber on the 2nd screen. And yeah, that’s really all there is to this dungeon. It’s a very short one. That’s why there’s only 1 type of dragon and only 3 enemies in this place.

Ooh, this thing looks reeeeaaaal valu- NRGH! Wow this thing is heavy! I can’t lift it outta this chest at all!
Uh, let me give it a go.

What the-!?
Huh. I’m not sure why you were having so much trouble getting this out of the chest. Maybe your lifting posture was bad or something. Ooh! It’s kind of a snazzy new weapon! Hope you won’t mind if I swap over to this, Stella.
Not at all! As long as you’re happy fighting that way, I won’t mind!
Hrm. Now how do you sell a rock with a stick in it...?
Perhaps the workshop near the mine could get some use out of this?

Mjölnir here is the next upgrade when it comes to Healer only weapons. Despite being a staff, Nila isn’t worthy to wield this. It only has 6 more ATK than the Melluride Hunk, but it does not come with any speed penalty at all, compared to the stick in a rock’s whopping -15 SPD! Which alone makes it a big upgrade. It also makes Edward’s basic attacks Lightning elemental, which can be handy for dealing with certain kinds of enemies, but a level 10 Swing Crush will usually out-damage that in most situations.

Now let’s actually go through the main part of the 2nd room.

The Orcanos Dragons generally make big laps on the outer perimeter of the room. Like with the ones in the first screen, all of them are aggressive.

Stella gained more power in the rampage.

Yeesh! What’s with this crap!?
It may be best not to look a gift horse in the mouth so much and be thankful that we’re getting anything from these chests at least. ...Though I would definitely like it if these treasures were better than this.
We did get that hammer for Edward, so it’s not all bad!

Edward and Buront gained more power upon the killing of the final Orcanos Dragon. Which also means...

A-already!? W-wow!
Oh thank god that was another easy one. I think I like this region the most out of all the ones we’ve been to. Even if it is pretty cold.
Ha, for whatever reason, the dragon population in this part of the continent here is very sparse. I wonder if that other set of ruins had anything to do with it.

There are some more secret passages throughout this screen.

What gives!?
Well, that writing did say this place was pretty cleaned out. Seems like that hammer might’ve been the only thing they missed.
Raaagh! I guess I should be happy we found that at least.
That’s the spirit, Ark!

WHAT THE FUCK!?

Betrayed by a chest yet again! This day just keeps on getting worse!
How did they even fit in there anyways!?
Wow! A monster ambush from a treasure chest! Now I can truly call myself an adventurer!
I’m glad someone sees the bright side of this. Somehow.

Funnily enough, you can actually run from this encounter.

Never! Ever! Get! In my way! Ever! Again!

I chose to go the path of bloodshed instead.

Well, there was no harm in checking again.

Nothing special happens once that ambush is resolved.

So how do we get to this hidden room in the middle? As riveting as finding common medicine is, we still haven’t found the herbs yet.
Hmm... Aha! Take a look over there!

Ooh! Another secret passage!

In order to reach the center room, which is our main objective, we need to find secret passages leading there.

Here’s a map of said passages. Reaching there can be a bit of a hassle, as the passages are an invisible maze with plenty of dead ends. As for how you were supposed to know this, there was actually a hint I accidentally skipped over because I knew about this ahead of time. Whoops.

Okay, Spire said that we needed to look at a torch- ah! It’s right over here.

...Why didn’t that open the door?

Hey! Hear that? Maybe something else changed around here.

The hint for the existence of the secret passages was supposed to be this textbox popping up once you’re near this area. Which is your cue to start looking around.

After examining the torch, you need to come back to this altar.

Pretty sure that wasn’t there before. Flip it!

I don’t think there’s any undoing what we just did.

Then head back to the center portion of the second room.

DAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!
Oh, hang on. There’s something there.

What does it say?
Let’s see...

Fuck you. Fuck you. Fuck you. Fuck you. And another fuck you for good measure!
I’m sure the note writer is hearing your substantial and colorful rant right at this very moment.
Does it look like I care!? First, most of the chests here gave us complete crap, then that last chest betrayed us, and this one’s just insulting us right in our faces! Who’s the asshole that wrote this garbage anyways!?

...O-o-oh. Well this is kinda weirdly ironic. Outdone by a fellow Rogue, huh? Really need to step up my game...
So that’s how he knew about this room!
Funny how things work out sometimes, huh? If he didn’t raid this chest, we might not have known where to look for the herbs.
Grave moss, hm? Look! The herbs are over here!

Ewwww, they’re growing right on the corpse! I’m not picking those!
Ugh, fine! I’ll do it! Rest in peace, whoever you were.

Gross gross gross.

We should probably clean those thoroughly before administering that to Ren. We know exactly where those have been.

And with that, we’re done with this dungeon. Yeah one of the aspects of this place was that nearly every chest had awful rewards. Thor’s Hammer was the only worthwhile find as that was tucked away in the northwest corner.

Uh huh! Hurry and give it to her!

Open your mouth, Ren, I have some medicine!

Fade to black.

Ren! Are you okay?!

Do you remember anything? You were in danger! You had an awful fever.
I had a fever? Oh... It felt like a long dream, one I could only observe from the outside.
You almost died! You dropped down right here...
Don't expect me to know why it happened. I'm not a doctor.
I know, I know, but if we hadn't come when we did...
Nonetheless, you did. I was waiting. I wonder why you came?

You're the same as ever. I guess it'd take more than this to change you. Will you take better care of your health? Tell me next time it gets bad.
Tell you? How can I tell you? Where will you be?
Well, that's...

Spire looks around.

That's all the more reason to come and visit you, then! No, wait! Don't get it wrong! It's not that it's the reason I come!
Smooth.
Do you have a fever, Spire? Your cheeks are as red as a rabbit's eyes.
Oh you could probably say something like that, hee hee!
Sh-sh-shut up! You should be sleeping after that ordeal! I'll get you some food, you must be starving... So just rest quietly.

Fade to black as Spire leaves.

Noooooooothiiiiing! I mean you must really really care for her, huh?
There’s no shame in feeling that way, you know.

Spire looks around flustered for a bit.

Anyway, we're square! Reward's at the Office. It's the thing I took from the Phaedna chest! Should be top-notch. Anyway, I have to go taste what Ren was cooking, right now! Good luck to you!

Spire leaves.

A fortunate turn of events that Spire was there for her at that moment and all this time, hmm?
Heh heh, yeah. Must be nice having someone care for you like that.
Mmhmm, I bet it would be very nice indeed.
Heh, I guess that kinda thing would feel good to think about. Anyways, didya hear what he said? That treasure he snatched from us is our reward! Let’s go get it already!

Bwah? A shield?
I’m not putting my hands anywhere near that thing! The rest of you are free to handle that hand hazard however you wish!

The Hellspike is an ultimate shield of sorts. Knights can’t equip it, but every other class can. Which is funny because this is the only shield they’re allowed to equip. It’s a bit of an interesting piece of equipment, as no other piece of equipment that isn’t body armor provides anywhere as much defense as this shield, as the most amount of defense you can get in a slot otherwise is a set of gloves that come with 7 DEF. So if you want to increase a party member’s survivability, this is an option to consider for them.

Don’t move on just yet. Now that we’ve turned in the quest, let’s go check back up on Ren and Spire.

Let me show my gratitude by teaching you something.

That should say “Heavy Labor”, not “Medium Labor.”

We appreciate the lessons you’ve taught us.
Huh. Didn’t know you could do something like that.
You should be able to gather much more now. Making snowpeople isn't all I do, you know.

I guess it’s something like that.
Because of you, I've had to break my silence. But I'm not angry at you.

Now that Ren’s feeling better, we can start using this inn again if we so wish.

And with that, we have learned every single party skill in the game! To wrap up this update, let’s check on Spire.

Recently, I brought her one of teacher's books. She has many demands. But she seems to be enjoying life more now.
That’s nice to hear!
Make sure to take good care of her now!

And with that, that little sequence of events with Spire comes to a close.
