Chapter 77: Side Story 4: Still Going (ugh)
Well, we’re back here again. Gonna go through the Thieves’ Den a bit and then post some notes on the anime. *sigh* Let’s just get to it, okay?
Music: No More What Ifs (Instrumental Version)
Did I wish to see him fall? Did I wish for him to confess his crimes? I have yet to come to an answer, even now.
Do you really need one? Sometimes, it’s just not that easy.
Lady Ann is right. Nothing good can come of forcing your feelings.
I see. That’s very prudent. Ann… Morgana… Thank you.
Let’s get some new items in here.
She’s was [sic] a frickin’ genius figurin’ out that vault door thing.
She wrapped her head around all that cognition stuff so quickly, too. She really is the brains of the Phantom Thieves.
For real! We sure as hell weren’t gonna fill that role ourselves.
I know, right?
…Wait, isn’t that kind of sad?
I’m glad you appreciate my splendor, Makoto!
Keep the praise coming! In front of Lady Ann, if possible.
Yeah, yeah… I’ll keep that in mind.
He even had a little pose for it.
How long did you practice that routine, Morgana?
Don’t be ridiculous! It’s not like I spent time preparing!
So you just came up with it on the spot? That’s kinda weird too, isn’t it?
:lmao:
……
Meow?
Ugh, don’t play dumb with me!
Let’s just give him this one.
I have to be thankful to her. To Johanna. She helped me break free of those chains and rode by my side.
…I suppose it’s a little strange to be thanking a piece of my own heart, though.
I totally get you, though. I feel the same way about my own.
Someday, I’d like to tell her… Thank you for fighting with me.
Lady Ann on TV…!? The views would go through the roof!
But… If she gets super popular, she’ll end up in the crosshairs of more than a few unsavory characters…
Not to worry, Lady Ann! I’ll protect you!
The hell are you talkin’ about, man?
Well, if that happens, I’ll be sure to hire you as my bodyguard.
And that’s enough of that for now, time for ANIME:
Episode 9
- Man, the pacing continues to be utterly delirious. This is just basic editing problems relating to timing between cuts.
- I know this episode is called “Operation maid watch,” so obviously it’s gonna deal with Kawakami (eeurgh), but are we seriously wasting time on “I have all these dirty Mementos clothes, if only someone could wash them for me”?
- Okay, lol, making the cat watch the machine is kinda funny
- Didn’t need any of this scene of Ann bathing!
- NEWSPAPER CLUB MEMBER
- Oh, and it’s Yumeko!
- Haru too! Look at all these fun little easter eggs! I’m too easy to please!
- Get out of here, Mishima! You don’t want none of this shit!
- Coming off his roles in JJBA and Trails of Cold Steel, Sean Chiplock is kind of a weird pick for Mishima to me, I’m realizing.
- ”Operation Maidwatch!” “THAT’S EPIC”
- Watching this with several months between each batch has caused me to forget any previous scenes with Ren and Takemi. Turns out this is a bad way to watch this show!
- Is this entire episode going to be miscellaneous Confidant shit?
- Ren, why are you embarrassed, you were the one who was most into this a minute ago
- Michelle Ruff’s “Becky” voice is weirding me out for some reason
- Oh, yep, it’s getting really “sultry” now, I hate this
- Kawakami, you’re looking directly at his face, come on, you should recognize him by now
- There’s already plenty of eye candy here, show, you don’t need to cut to a POV shot of Ren staring at her boobs
- Chouno is just Amanda Winn Lee doing her Shadow Yukiko voice
- Oh, we’re just doing Ryuji’s Confidant now, I guess that is the whole rest of this episode
- Ren calling Kawakami for maid shit to get information on the track team is, admittedly, pretty clever on the part of the writers, but it kind of loses something from having Ryuji volunteer that information himself. Does make the story more efficient, I’ll give it that.
- Yamauchi is blatantly Kirk Thornton (the SIU Director). I am cursed with voice actor knowledge.
- Okay, honestly? This has been one of the better episodes, mostly because it’s been willing to rewrite and rework stuff pretty thoroughly to suit the narrative.
- Not happy with the “Ryuji gets beaten up” joke, but it is pretty funny that they put footage of Kawakami listening with a smile over it. Maybe not in the way they intended.
- M A S S A G E S
- Very good joke that they follow up the “massages” line with Kawakami waiting for laundry.
Episode 10
- Early Hifumi!
- ”I DIDN’T DO IT” Lmao, goddammit Mishima
- Oh, they’re putting the pancakes scene after the interview, weird
- Yeah, I’m definitely watching this in the worst possible way, because when Ann said that Akechi and Ren had already met I had completely forgotten that scene (it was from episode 5).
- Wait, shit, but Ann wasn’t there for that scene!
- Akechi, make eye contact, you’re being rude
- Robbie Daymond sounds really animated in the pancakes scene in a way Akechi never was in the game. It’s just a bit of weird direction but it comes across as almost flirty, which, hey, I guess maybe they do understand something here.
- Lmao that the first voice on Makoto’s recording is Ann instead of Ryuji in this version, that amuses me for some reason
- I’m just now realizing that they haven’t seeded Kaneshiro’s blackmail stuff at all in this. It’s all completely out of nowhere.
- We’re also skipping all the actual investigation work here so there’s really no reason to take any of it seriously as a viewer.
- The karaoke joke actually kind of works in this version.
- Did it… seriously not occur to you guys that the boss would have a Palace? What were you even trying to do if you didn’t think he had one?
- Morgana, just because he’s wearing his school bag like a backpack does not make it a backpack
- All right, hell yeah, jumping right into the roving homosexual nonsense, let’s just rip this band-aid off quick
- Seems like they also changed those guys to be ever-so-slightly less offensive in this (edit: uh, maybe spoke too soon on that one).
- No, nuh-uh, I refuse to believe Ohya would leave Crossroads early. That’s a slanderous lie.
- LALA!
- ”Hey! Are you old enough?” “I, uh, *soft muttering*” Okay, that got a genuine laugh out of me.
- ”The syndicate here in Shibuya”? You’re in Shinjuku! How drunk are you!?
Episode 11
- Papa Niijima is voiced by Richard Epcar, and it’s super weird because he’s also, you know, the principal.
- And one of the cops talking about her father’s death immediately afterwards is Kaneshiro! And the other ones are Yusuke and Iwai!
- Way more venom from Elizabeth Maxwell for this scene where Sae yells at Makoto. At least this time she claims she didn’t mean it, I guess! And actually bothers to leave the room!
- ”From where [did you fall]?” Gee, Ren, take two fucking guesses, you already know about the flying bank
- Oh wow, this scene in Kaneshiro’s club where his goons almost sexually assault Makoto is very upsetting!
- Kaneshiro seems like he’s hard to draw well, I feel for the animators, but also, lmao, he looks like shit approximately 50% of the time.
- This shot, on the other hand, rules:
- Kaneshiro stuffs money directly into the boobs of this woman with Morgana’s voice actress
- This bit of Makoto’s POV listening to Morgana meowing rules
- Makoto’s VA straight-up says the wrong name referring to Ann here, “Tamaki-san.”
- Still really hate these voice filters on the Shadows
- I like the Johanna voice more in the anime honestly
- Goddammit, the bike is CG!
- I kinda missed these bad fight scenes, I say as poorly-drawn shadows leap at our protagonists, causing Ann to backflip away to where the camera is waiting to leer at her ass.
- And yet more ass in Makoto’s naming scene! Bad show! Bad!
Episode 12
- Oh, we’re doing the Makoto Confidant unlock stuff here… but don’t you guys have more important shit to be doing right now?
- Xander Mobus just does not sound like even a fictional high school student to me, I’m sorry, Ben Platt ass over here
- This is definitely supposed to be the end of the first “set” of episodes, as evidenced by the way this one is being staged to emphasize the characters and their meager arcs as they infiltrate Kaneshiro’s Palace.
- Lol, origin story for the CRT
- They made Kaiji Tang do a Brooklyn accent for the goon who reads the calling card to Kaneshiro, this rules
- This is a rough-looking episode even by this show’s standards:
- I like that they actually have the Shadow rap, though
- The Baton Pass part is cool, I guess, but all this circumstance just highlights that Kaneshiro is a rather weak villain to end this part of the story on. P4A Episode 12 this is not.
- Decent remix of Life Will Change, though (wait, it’s the version from Dancing in Starlight, actually)
- YEET
- Can’t believe Yoshida hasn’t shown up yet, smh
- Looked ahead at future episodes and the next batch is gonna be like five, uggggghhhhhh
