Update 46: Revelations

Is everyone ready?
Ready as we’ll ever be I suppose.
Finally getting to explore the depths of Tokyon? Do tell us all about the trip when you get back!
Stay safe. We have no idea what lies in a place like that.
As I’ve said before, I’m not even sure what lies there myself, especially if it got tied to another dimension. After all this time, I doubt what remains would match my memories of the realm.
You’re such a worrywart! I’m sure we’ll allll be fiiine! You three take care of Arietta and Kazan while we’re out!
Oh you have our word they’ll all stay safe.
Sheesh, let’s get going already! Not every day ya get to travel to another dimension ya know!

It’s finally time to explore Tokyon. This is the party that was voted in to investigate the place.

No music is playing here.

As Aitelle told us, we need to head to the center of the world to get in.

To think that this was a portal to another dimension...
Not like we could use it before Aitelle let us in.

O-oookay. Here we go! Hee hee, we’re gonna get to see where you used to live!
You don’t have to sound so excited about it.

Whoa! That was weird. Are we there already?
Seems like it.

Welcome, to Tokyon. Been a while since we heard an entirely new music track. Definitely quite a fitting one for this mysterious place.

Wow...! The buildings here are all so tall! And there are so many of them too!
It’s like several Towers of the Gods put together!
Ya used to live here? Fancy!
Hmm, well I suppose it’s your first time seeing something like this. For me this was just a part of my every day life back then.

Some of you might be wondering why this place is called Tokyon and not Tokyo. (Incidentally this was localized as Tokion in VFD.) At this time this game was made, it was meant to be ambiguous whether this was meant to be the real Tokyo just like Etrian Odyssey 1 or if this was simply a fantasy counterpart that was referencing it, with it also being ambiguous whether this was the actual real life Earth, or just its own world as Eden.

Of course that being said, if you played any of the later games, you can see that the developers just decided to make it the actual Tokyo in the end and yes, confirmed that the series takes place on the actual real life Earth.

For this Let’s Play, to maintain consistency with this game, I’m going to stick with Tokyon and such.

I uh, take it you didn’t have to deal with these world ending drops into the abyss in your old life?
I did not, though that would have probably made life more spicy for us denizens of this city.

There aren’t any oceans here we can sail on. Oh yeah, even though the bottom screen shows a world map, this place isn’t a 2nd world like some games have. It becomes very evident through playing the game that Tokyon is not a 2nd overworld and is much smaller than the actual overworld due to how fast your icon moves through the bottom map. Though that certainly would have been something with how huge the game already is.

Man this place is weird. There’s like, actual fairies here.

Tokyon has some random encounters as well, so let’s take a glance at those.

Pixie
Level: 54
LIFE: 200
ATK: 126
DEF: 78
INT: 80
SPD: 70
Attack Type: Blunt
Attributes: Small
Exp: 832
Gold: 54
Item Drops:
-Normal: Fairy Wing - 30% Drop Rate. 6 needed for the quest Collect Fairy Wings!
--Wing of a Pixie.
-Rare: N/A
Damage Multipliers:
Slash: 100% Blunt: 100% Thrust: 100%
Fire: 100% Ice: 100% Lightning: 100%

Skills:

Subtle Curse: Has a 30% chance to inflict level 3 Curse (34% damage reflection) on the entire party. Has a speed factor of 75.
Tempting Song: 25% chance of inflicting Charm on the entire party. Has a speed factor of 75.
Oblivion Song: 30% chance of inflicting Skill Seal on the entire party. Has a speed factor of 90.

Pixies are pretty fragile, but they can be very capable of causing things to go south very fast. You’ll want to take them down fast because at this point, a Charmed party member will be an extremely deadly force. Damaging them down to half health also makes them more likely to use their weak basic attacks and not their debilitating ailments.

There’s also another rather notable thing about this enemy.

quote:

Remember this quest we got all the way back in update 9?! Right after we liberated Kazan from King and the rest of the dragons? Yeah. This is the point where we can finally complete it! Near the end of the game. Yeesh! Farm up these Fairy Wings from these Pixies and you can finally get that quest out of the log at long last.

Lost Crusader
Level: 54
LIFE: 360
ATK: 143
DEF: 90
INT: 62
SPD: 62
Attack Type: Slash
Attributes: N/A
Exp: 1075
Gold: 80
Item Drops:
-Normal: Miracle Crystal - 30% Drop Rate. 5 needed to unlock the Knight Cuirass. (Armor. +52 DEF, -5% Physical Damage.)
--Crystal of a Lost Crusader.
-Rare: N/A
Damage Multipliers:
Slash: 50% Blunt: 100% Thrust: 100%
Fire: 100% Ice: 100% Lightning: 200%

Skills:

Defenses Up: Applies a 120% multiplier to everyone’s DEF on the user’s side for 5 turns. Has a speed factor of 80.
Knight Blade: Deals melee 130% ATK-Based Slash damage to one party member. Has a speed factor of 90.
Cure: Heals one ally with a base healing of 30 (Restores 48 Life to the target, factoring in INT.) Has a speed factor of 80.

Lost Crusaders are another one of the class equivalents in enemy form, this time taking from the Knight. They’ll have a chance to increase the defenses of all enemies in the battle, and if an enemy is injured enough, they’ll have a chance to attempt to cure them. For a rather pitiful amount. Between that and the low amount of LIFE these enemies have, this enemy is barely a speed bump at this point.

You should be able to deal with them and their cohorts easily.

Telos.
Yes.
Do you know why there are flying spotted-
No. No I don’t. And those weren’t a part of our everyday lives either.

Strange Killer
Level: 54
LIFE: 440
ATK: 155
DEF: 86
INT: 58
SPD: 64
Attack Type: Blunt
Attributes: N/A
Exp: 1214
Gold: 54
Item Drops:
-Normal: Sharkskin - 30% Drop Rate.
--Skin of a Strange Killer.
-Rare: N/A
Damage Multipliers:
Slash: 100% Blunt: 100% Thrust: 100%
Fire: 100% Ice: 100% Lightning: 100%

Skills:

Intimidate: 30% chance of inflicting Fear on the entire party. Has a speed factor of 80.
Gobble Up: Deals 60% melee ATK-based Blunt damage to one party member and has a 15% chance to inflict Instant Death. Has a speed factor of 70.

Strange Killers are basically souped up Ocean Killers, only now they have a chance to instantly kill a party member. The chance is small, though make sure to have revivals on hand as deaths at this point can be a hassle to deal with.

Edward got a level up from killing a flying spotted shark.

Swing Crush now deals 165% damage.

I feel like there’s something... evil holding me back.
Don’t worry Stella, I’ll get that bit of yuckiness off of us.

Gah! Is this what it’s like to be on the receiving end of Nila’s stuff?
No. She would make it far more painful for one.

Here’s the last new enemy type in Tokyon.

Lost Bishop
Level: 54
LIFE: 220
ATK: 124
DEF: 70
INT: 68
SPD: 59
Attack Type: Blunt
Attributes: N/A
Exp: 1040
Gold: 100
Item Drops:
-Normal: Small Gemstone - 30% Drop Rate.
--Gemstone of a Lost Bishop.
-Rare: N/A
Damage Multipliers:
Slash: 100% Blunt: 100% Thrust: 100%
Fire: 100% Ice: 100% Lightning: 100%

Skills:

Freeze: Deals ranged INT-Based Ice damage to one party member. Has a base damage of 85. Has a speed factor of 80.
Volcano: Deals ranged INT-Based Fire damage to all party members. Has a base damage of 80. Has a speed factor of 80.
Concentrate: Inflicts a spell damage boost on the user for 2 turns. Damage is multiplied by 300%. Has a speed factor of 75.

Lost Bishop is the last member of the “class as an enemy” archetype in this game. And they’re basically a repeat as Lost Wizards already served as a mirror to the Mage, so the Mage gets 2 enemies based on them funnily enough.

The main difference here is, yep you read that right, they gave these enemies Concentrate. And a much stronger version too! That being said, they cast it very rarely, only having a 5% chance to do so. But if they do, take them out quick! Last thing you want is for them to use Volcano after that to cause an instant wipe.

There you go!
Ehee, thanks- oh what about yourself?
I’ll be fine. I’m sure you can handle these things.
If you say so.

Not a tough one to deal with, just make sure it doesn’t get a chance to use the Concentrate on something useful.

Over here is the final portal in the game, Portal Edo, leading into Tokyon. This is obviously a reference to the Edo period and Tokyo’s former name during that time.

Whoa. Is that Eden?!
Never thought I’d be able to see that from space. Or wherever this is.
I’m not sure if that planet is Eden. But I must admit it looks nice from this spot either way.

Incidentally this bridge is very likely to be a reference to the Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo.

Think we’ll find what we’re looking for here?
It’s a good place as any.

Welcome, to Masukami Memorial. This is our destination in Tokyon.

Incidentally, VFD localized this as Muskahmi Ruins.

Masukami Memorial is pretty much 7th Dragon’s version of the Zōjō-ji temple.

But, what can humans do?

This should be “But, what can you find here?”

We’re not sure. But we need something to be able to deal with the True Dragons! Anything!
Aitelle, please. If you know anything that can help, please tell us.
This place is a graveyard for souls long dead. I'll tell you what I know. But when I am done, you must leave this place.

If she ain’t gonna help, we’ll just look around ourselves!

There’s a series of questions you can say no to if you don’t want to listen to her explanation. Which is pointless as...

Ark, as eager as you are to look around, we should at least listen to what she has to say.
Fiiiiiine.

This is actually “Where are you going?”

Yeah, you got to listen to what she says to go on with the game.

Niara said something about Hypnos when he got attacked by the Soulcannon. Do you know what he meant by that?
Hypnos is a planet in another star system, far, far away from here. Right now, there are only two people from Hypnos left alive. One is me. The other is Emille, the chief scholar of Pleroma. She is... my sister. From a long time ago, from a vanished world. The planet we were born on was destroyed by these same Dragons. We survived only in a spirit form, and eventually found our way here.
So what’s the deal with you two and Eden?
Eden is similar to our world, and we've watched over you for a long time. We intervened only as necessary, taking form to assist your progress.
Assisting the planet in the dragon wars...

What’s special about this building? And I guess Tokyon in general.
This place is a base left over from the last war.
I don’t recall this building being the one used for that.
They feverishly researched countermeasures against the Dragons to the end. The war ended, and time continued to pass... But Tokyon remains. It was able to survive by phasing to an alternate spatial dimension.
Hmm. Just what could be so important here to cause this city to be preserved?

What do you know about Niara? Who is he?
Niara is the heart of the invasion... the True Dragon. The other Dragons you've dealt with, Imperials included, are as children. Niara is obsessed with this star, and he's raided it again and again.
And failed every time. No wonder he’s obsessed.
So if True Dragons are the leaders, and Imperial Dragons are basically their kids, what are the regular dragons for?
The Dragons sow the seeds of species like yours here. Then, when a flourishing civilization and ecosystem develops, they consume it. First, the head Dragon sends his underlings, if it looks easy enough. They carpet the world in the toxic Bloom... Softening it to be more easily devoured. Destroyed from its core. Again and again, the Dragons have partaken of their dreadful feast.
So the Bloom is basically them meat tenderizing us? Blech!
The Imperials oversee the harvesting process while the Dragons themselves get to work using the Bloom to make us easy prey. If things get troublesome, the True Dragon will intervene.
Hee hee, I guess it says something about how strong we are if we got Niara to come here himself.

Are you sure that’s all? I mean we know how and why the dragons do this, but...
I don’t see how any of this’ll help deal with the True Dragons.
That’s because she didn’t tell us everything. Aitelle, cut the crap. What are you hiding here?
Hey, don’t you think you’re being a bit harsh?
We came here for a lead on how to deal with the True Dragons and I know you have one! You weren’t this obstructive before, so don’t start with this bullshit now!
Telos! That’s enough! Don’t be too hard on her, you’re stressing her out! Look, I’m sorry about her behavior. Thanks for your time, we’ll just be leaving now.

Wha? N-no way...

A ball of light floats in from the east.

A flash of white.

It really is you...
But... but how?!

I've been watching the show you're putting on. With that sword in your hands, you've certainly given them a scare.
Hm, if you’ve been around all this time watching over us... Ah!

So that was you. If you’re aware of everything we’ve done, then you would also be aware of our... unique situation then.
Eh heh. Guess the cat’s outta the bag on that one, huh? Feels nice not having to shut up when we approach other people for once.
I still can’t believe that you’re here now.

A pause.

But what's wrong, now? The look on your face... Like you've seen a ghost.
...
Really. Really? You just went there?
Hahahaha! I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself.
Ehehehe. Oh, but if you’re here, then 3 years ago, when we evacuated Kazan...

Another pause.

Yeah, I was slain by the Imperial Dragon that day. But Aitelle here managed to salvage my soul. I'm only here in spirit. My physical body was completely destroyed.
At least you did a number on King beforehand. We appreciated that, probably the biggest reason we were able to win against him.

And I know the power you must understand to win.
So ya know how we can take down Niara and Haze?!
Did you know that a human with Dragon's blood once led humanity to victory?
Doris?! What are you doing?! He...

Takehaya here is a reference to Takehaya-Susanoo-no-Mikoto, where that’s a possible name a given text could give him. Sometimes just shorted to Susanoo-no-Mikoto.

So that’s what you were trying to hide, Aitelle. I should have figured.
Somewhere in this area, he's been sealed away. Outside of time and space. Find Takehaya, You'll get your answers.
Let Takehaya be! He's done enough. His wounds were severe. Don't you dare disturb his final rest. I can't bear to see him hurt again. I won't!
Is that the choice Takehaya would make, Aitelle? Or is it yours? You told me yourself about the kind of man he was. A guy like that would never sleep peacefully at a time like this, or give up. And if we don't try this, this world and this star will end up like yours did.
Doris is right, he’d take the opportunity to help us again if he had the chance. You know this.
Yes... but!
As long as we're alive, we've got to keep fighting. Struggle until we're dead. If we don't do that, it's already over for us.

A pause.

I can't stand against that fiery passion you have. After all, that was the reason I loved him so very, very much.
So you’ll help us?
I think that’s a yes! So where we can find Takehaya?
Takehaya is resting in the room behind here. Go forth and meet him, but prepare yourselves.

I'm glad to have this chance to talk again. You've done me proud.
Hee hee, it’s nice to see you again too!
I never thought we’d get this chance after we couldn’t find you in Kazan. I guess this world works in stranger ways than I thought.
But we don't have time to wallow in sentiment. Go find Takehaya. Somewhere in this interminable repository, you'll find his chamber. You'll have to pay close attention to pick it out.

I will let you see him. But, take care not to wreck the peace he has earned.

So this Takehaya guy. Did you know him?
Of course. Back then, my team worked with him to help repel one of Niara’s previous invasions. Without him, I doubt we would have been successful.
If this guy was “humanity’s champion”, why was he sealed away? Not a great reward for what he did if ya ask me.
...You’ll see why when we find him. We didn’t have much choice in the matter. Everyone involved, including him, agreed it was the best course of action to take.

There are random encounters in this dungeon, with some new enemies to encounter here.

Destroyer
Level: 55
LIFE: 450
ATK: 133
DEF: 88
INT: 56
SPD: 60
Attack Type: Blunt
Attributes: N/A
Exp: 1248
Gold: 90
Item Drops:
-Normal: Orichalcum - 30% Drop Rate. 5 needed to unlock the Knight Cuirass. (Armor. +52 DEF, -5% Physical Damage.)
--Armor of a Destroyer.
-Rare: N/A
Damage Multipliers:
Slash: 100% Blunt: 100% Thrust: 100%
Fire: 100% Ice: 100% Lightning: 150%

Skills:

20mm Cannon: Randomly attacks the party with Thrust damage 5 times, dealing 30% ranged ATK-based damage per hit. Has a speed factor of 80.

These enemies aren’t particularly notable other than the fact that they have a unique version of 30mm Cannon that’s actually weaker. They’re the only enemy with this move and it doesn’t do a whole lot. They also don’t like spamming it either, so it’s unlikely to see 20mm Cannon cast for multiple turns in a row.

Would ya quit it?!

Yeah, unless you’re at low health, these things aren’t much of a threat.

Searcher
Level: 55
LIFE: 260
ATK: 125
DEF: 75
INT: 60
SPD: 68
Attack Type: Blunt
Attributes: Small
Exp: 901
Gold: 55
Item Drops:
-Normal: Iron Chunk - 30% Drop Rate.
--Armor of a Searcher.
-Rare: N/A
Damage Multipliers:
Slash: 100% Blunt: 100% Thrust: 100%
Fire: 100% Ice: 100% Lightning: 150%

Skills:

Freeze Beam: Deals ranged INT-Based Ice damage to one party member. Has a base damage of 100. Has a speed factor of 80.
Call for Help: Summons 1 Searcher. Has a speed factor of 100.

Searchers are the last new enemy in Tokyon, and they aren’t particularly notable either. They can summon more of themselves, but they rarely do that. It’s only a 10% chance to do so, and only increases to 20% at half life.

Of course they can only summon 1 at a time, and these things are fragile enough that you should be able to clear them out faster than they can summon them.

Ya know, there’s something I’m wondering. So how the hell did Niara come back if you kicked his ass in the past?
Because we killed him wrong.
Uhh. Excuse me? How do you kill a True Dragon "wrong"?? And more importantly, is it even possible to kill one "right"?
I know how to kill a True Dragon correctly, because I've done it before. The next True Idiot that tried the same trick again got a taste of that method at our hands. And as far as I know, he hasn't come back! I can only conclude that we just didn’t have the right tools for the job the first time.
"Next?!" "First?!"
Oh right, yes. After we repelled Niara’s invasion, another dragon invasion happened a year later.
Y-you had to live through m-multiple invasions in a row?!
Oh don’t worry, we repelled that one as well. Please don’t give me that pitying look. You need not spare any sympathy for me.
Telos, no one should have to live through something like this even once, let alone multiple times!
I know ya’ll were in a coma for 3 years since the invasion started, but for the rest of us, that was a really hellish time for us.
...I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to join in on your suffering-
Whoa whoa whoa hey! I wasn’t trying to say something like that! Feh, was never really good at this kinda thing. It’s more, this ain’t something I wanna live through ever again. And good grief, I can’t believe ya had to live through another invasion a short while after the first one. And...
Look, I said before you don’t need to spare any sympathy- ugh. ...If it’s any consolation, this is only the third invasion I’ve lived through. For 5,000 years after the second invasion, this planet was truly free from the dragons.
Really? 5,000 years? I guess you really must have scared them off if it took that long for the next one to happen.
...Well, admittedly around 80 years after the second invasion, there were suspicions of another True Dragon lurking on the horizon, and thus another invasion. However, no matter how much I investigated and prepared... nothing of the sort happened. I’m not sure why. It’s something that nagged at my mind for a long time until I forgot about the dragons altogether.
Well, consider it a good thing you and the rest of the planet didn’t have to go through another dragon related ordeal back then!
You forget, the planet wasn’t truly free from strife all that time. After all... I made everyone suffer during my reign.
That was over a thousand years ago, wasn’t it? I’m not excusing what you did back then, or speaking for all the people you’ve hurt or killed, but you were punished for that for a long time. And now, you’re helping us save Eden, not making it suffer. I’d say that what matters the most right now. Your life right now isn’t about being some evil overlord, I wouldn’t have let you join our guild if that was still the case.
You forced me to join to "protect me!"
Details details. You were traveling alone when we found you. I wasn’t going to let you get eaten by a bear or something. As I was saying, you’re not some evil overlord now. You’re one of our guild mates. One of our friends.
You’re... you’re far too kind for your own good. ...Thank you.

Huh, what in the world is this?
Oooh, is that the map for this place?
Um, I’m not sure. Here, just have a look for yourself.

The hell does any of this mean?
I’m not sure, but hold onto that. Maybe it’ll come in handy later.

Say hi to Time Cat.

Ooh, that’s such a cute cat! But, what’s it doing here?
Hmm. For now, we should probably just go down one of these three paths.
Let’s try the left path first.

Weren’t we just here?
I’m pretty sure that’s the same cat we saw a few seconds ago, yes.
Edward, hand me that sheet of paper. Ah. I believe these are actually directions through this maze.
Ooh, cool! Wait uh, so which symbols mean which direction?
...I don’t know.
Hmm. I guess we’ll have to brute force that part for a bit.

So the gimmick of this dungeon, it’s a Lost Woods styled maze. The Time Cat is a landmark. If you go the wrong way at any point, you’ll be sent back to the Time Cat. Though heading south from the Time Cat will just send you back to Aitelle and Doris.

The map on the bottom screen is replaced with this set of symbols you see here. Each symbol corresponds to a certain direction. So you need to decode the symbols to figure out which one is which. How do you decode this? Well, the game doesn’t actually provide the answer itself here or any hints. It’s essentially a partial logic puzzle, where you’ll have to brute force the maze for a bit until you have solid concrete answers on which symbol corresponds to which direction.

What makes this a bit tricky is that there are 2 paths through the maze, though they’ll take you to different destinations. So the first screen has 2 different correct answers, which can muddle the decoding process for a bit.

I’ll just list out which symbol corresponds which direction here.

t = North
M = East
E = South
P = West

Of course what makes this tricky is that the 2nd set of directions has 3 of its symbols scrubbed out. Unfortunately, you’re just gonna have to take a guess at those points, so that part is just pure trial and error.

The first set of directions leads to progress, so we’ll follow the 2nd set of symbols first.

First, go north.

Then west.

Then south.

Go back north.

Oh yeah, backtracking can count as a valid direction to take. Not knowing that can trip you up.

Here’s the first of the scrubbed out directions. Just head east here.

And head east again.

Walk south.

Then east.

Head north.

West.

North.

Here’s the 2nd of the scrubbed out symbols. Backtrack south here.

Now take the path east.

Head south.

Go west.

South.

Now backtrack north.

East.

Here’s the last of the scrubbed out symbols. Head east again.

Yeah getting through this maze with the 2nd set of symbols can take as most as 9 attempts if you don’t guess correctly. Or about a 1 in 24 chance of getting here on your first attempt, even if you decoded all the symbols correctly.

Now finally, head north.

And you’ll reach this room.

To sum up, the directions you have to take are:

1. North
2. West
3. South
4. North
5. East
6. East
7. South
8. East
9. North
10. West
11. North
12. South
13. East
14. South
15. West
16. South
17. North
18. East
19. East
20. North

What was so important that they had to hide all these books behind that maze?
We’ll find out now I suppose.

I have a feeling that we have just done something utterly horrible.

Our prize for succeeding at said maze, is another EX skill, the final one for the Mage. This is actually known as “End of the World” in VFD, but had to be shrunk down to “Apocalypse” here due to text size limitations.

Apocalypse has quite a bit of requirements to unlock. You need to max out both offensive Mana spells as well as maxing out Space Mastery to unlock this. Not only that, unlocking Skyfall needs Mana Mastery at level 3. All this totals a whopping 23 SP to unlock.

No fancy restrictions attached to this one, like with the Mage EX skills, you can launch this whenever.

Hahahaha!! The power to reduce this world to ashes, is now at my fingertips.
WHAT HAVE WE DONE?!

...Where’s the kaboom? There was supposed to be an Eden-shattering kaboom!
The universe has had mercy on us today.

Like with the Mage spells, Apocalypse is a ranged INT-based Non-elemental attack that has a base spell damage of 5. It has a spell power of 325% and a damage multiplier of 200%. This is greater than Skyfall’s 290% spell power, but less than Mana Bullet’s 360% spell power.

That being said, there is actually a reason to use this over Mana Bullet. This skill actually comes with a 40% chance to inflict Skill Seal, and is one of 3 player skills in the entire game that can do that. The others being the Samurai’s Zeppa Uchi, which has a 45% infliction rate, and the Fighter’s Tidal Wave, which has a 75% infliction rate. So it’s unfortunately the worst of the lot that can do so. But it’s the only ailment the Mage is capable of inflicting, and a well timed Skill Seal can really turn things around.

I should note that Apocalypse is actually considered a Space spell, so it’s affected by Space Mastery, not Mana Mastery. Funnily enough, this is actually the only spell Space Mastery has an effect on since it’s the only offensive spell in said skill branch.

Now back at Masukami Memorial...

Just head south to head back to the Time Cat.

Hey Telos. You said you weren’t always a demon. So I’m wondering, how’d you manage to stop the invasions before?
I wasn’t a powerless human back then, if that’s what you’re implying. I had the ability to, hmm how should I explain this?
Take yer time.
Ah, I had the power to manipulate portions of reality to our whims. At the time my powers were weak, but I could command dragons to do my bidding with enough persistence, which mostly just involved forcing them to punch themselves in the face or take a nap. But I could also change reality itself to directly strengthen my team.
Hrm, those are... kinda scary powers to have.
I suppose it is when I put it that way. In practice it was... not too different from what Dia here is capable of, now that I think about it.
Huh. So how much of your old powers do you have now?
Only a tiny portion, from back when I was a normal human being. I can’t perform most of those abilities anymore now that I’m sealed in Dia’s body.

Let’s progress with the plot. First, go east.

Then go north.

Head east.

Then east again.

Take the south path.

Go west.

Then north.

East.

West.

And then finally north.

We’re finally out of the maze. To summarize the directions you had to take to get here...

1. East
2. North
3. East
4. East
5. South
6. West
7. North
8. East

No trickery involved this time since this is the path to Takehaya.

And there’s a healing spring and save point right here. As you can tell by this setup, there’s a boss fight ahead. Though this is one of the few times the game doesn’t directly warn you about it and lets you turn back, so don’t go to the end of this hallway if you aren’t prepared yet.

There’s our guild’s stats for the upcoming fight. I actually forgot to have Ark equip the ultimate Dagger. Whoops. Oh well, won’t hamper me too much.

So that’s Takehaya...
I didn’t think he’d be all chained up like that.
Poor dude.
What the heck did he do to deserve this?
Nothing. It’s the opposite of what he deserves, but we had little choice in the matter.

Doris and Aitelle arrive.

This is the man who led us to victory...

I am a human being. My name is Doris Agouto. You saved the world once. I need you to help us save it again.
Ha! You think you're strong enough?
Not a chance.

In order to drive off the True Dragon Niara from Eden once more... We need all your power and everything you know about the Dragons.
Aha, so that's it. You just want to steal away my power. Isn't that what you're saying, in the end?
Takehaya?
The power of the Dragons is inscribed into my soul. It's all carved into me. Every cell in my body is partially Dragon now. That was their revenge.

Slight mistranslation. That last sentence is actually supposed to be:

So I’m half-dragon and half-human.
You’re part dragon?!
What the hell?!
So that’s why...
Yes, that was the main reason we had to seal him away.
Are you kidding me?!
It was the only way! We needed that power!

There’s a missing sentence here, which brings a bit more context to what happens next.

If you want this power, then take it from me!

Takehaya breaks free from his chains.

Here he comes, get ready!

Video: Takehaya

Be careful, he’s very powerful! He wasn’t called humanity’s champion for nothing!
A dragon and human hybrid... How did something like that happen?!
And there wouldn’t happen to be any more of them around, would there?!
No, he’s the last one.
The hell do ya mean by last?! What others were out there?!
...Please don’t ask that question again, it’s not something I wish to elaborate on at the moment.
Okay. For now, let’s focus on winning this fight!

Hoo boy. Takehaya is one of the more complex bosses in the game and one of the tougher ones too! He hits very hard with his massive 230 ATK stat, which is one of the highest ones we’ve seen so far! His INT is no slouch too, being at 150, which is the highest INT stat among all enemies in the main game. He also has the highest LIFE stat in the entire game, at a whopping 15000! Not even the final boss has that much! Though that’s namely to facilitate his main gimmick. Speaking of which, let’s dive into the nitty gritty of this fight now.

Takehaya being half-dragon and half-human has 2 different “modes” he can be in for this fight, Human mode and Dragon mode. Each mode has their own skillset and attributes, which is why his skillset is so massive. He starts off in Human mode. What this does is cause him to take double damage from all physical attacks, and half damage from elemental attacks. In this state he namely uses magic attacks, though he has 1 physical attack. He can only use Rush Edge, Cure, Freeze, Blizzard, or Dragon Blood in the Human state.

When he casts Dragon Blood, he’ll change to Dragon mode, which does a few things for him. He’ll take double damage from elemental attacks, but half damage from physical attacks. He’ll only use physical attacks in this state. The skills he uses here are Dragon Strike, Rampage, Gather Power, Megaheadbutt, and Human Blood.

Human Blood does not double stack with his starting damage multipliers. It just clears the effects of Dragon Blood, returning his damage multipliers to normal when he casts it.

Takehaya does count as a dragon type enemy, so if you’ve cleared out the Bloom around the central island, he’ll take a whopping 260% damage from the damage types he’s weak to, greatly speeding up this fight! Though since he does start out the battle in Human mode, Mages will actually have a bit of a tough time since he only takes half damage from their attacks. Unless you’ve invested in their Mana skills, which just ignores Takehaya’s mechanics entirely and will deal full damage no matter what. Though they can’t benefit from his elemental weaknesses, so swap back to using your elemental spells for when he’s in Dragon mode.

Some good defensive measures to deal with him are a Sword Fighter with Attack Down. That’ll cut the damage of his physical attacks down greatly, though if he’s in Human mode, that’ll only affect Rush Edge. A Knight with Icebreak can neutralize Human mode, and their other defensives can also help with the Dragon mode’s physical attacks.

If you have a Princess and a Mage, the Princess can help out with the Mage’s lackluster damage against Takehaya’s Human mode by making use of Angel Cage to cancel out his half damage. Though be warned you’ll also give Takehaya a 50% damage boost on his Ice attacks in the process.

Takehaya doesn’t have a strict attack pattern, his AI is pretty RNG based. Though it is somewhat predictable. He can only use certain moves depending on which moves he cast last turn.

Takehaya’s Behavior posted:

If Human Blood, Rush Edge, or Cure was cast last turn:
-50% chance to cast Rush Edge.
-35% chance to cast Freeze.
-15% chance to cast Cure.

If Freeze was cast last turn:
-30% chance to cast Rush Edge.
-70% chance to cast Blizzard.

If Blizzard was cast last turn:
-100% chance to cast Dragon Blood.

If Dragon Blood, Dragon Strike, or Rampage was cast last turn:
-35% chance to cast Dragon Strike.
-30% chance to cast Gather Power.
-35% chance to cast Rampage.

If Gather Power was cast last turn:
-75% chance to cast Megaheadbutt.
-25% chance to cast Dragon Strike.

If Megaheadbutt was cast last turn:
-100% chance to cast Human Blood.
Takehaya can't swap modes unless the RNG decides to let him cast a specific sequence of moves. So it’s possible for him to just end up being stuck on one mode for the entire fight. For him to swap to Dragon Mode, he needs to cast Freeze then Blizzard, which has a 24.5% chance of happening on those 2 turns. Then he'll cast Dragon Blood. While in Dragon Mode, he needs to Cast Gather Power, then Megaheadbutt for him to swap back to Human Mode, which has a 22.5% chance of happening.

Hoo boy, that was a very big breakdown, haven’t given one of those in a long time. Let’s move onto the actual fight, shall we?

First thing I wanna do is make statuses easier to inflict on Takehaya.

I’ll have Edward start off by contributing some damage.

This was actually a wrong input. I meant to start off with Painkiller, but I accidentally used Tarantella instead. Oops.

And I’ll have Dia power up the party.

Uhhh, I meant to do that!

This is gonna be a long fight...

Gah! So that’s what it’s like to be hit by the champion of humanity.
I did say he was powerful.

Yeah he hits very hard. Not enough to really put the party down at any rate.

Take thi- wha?

Oof, unlucky. She had a 4% chance of missing there.

We’ve beaten lots of dragons, we can beat him too!

Edward’s opening turn was just to speed up the fight slightly, but I’ll namely have him heal the party to stave off the damage Takehaya will do to us.

Okay let’s actually use the right move this time.

I’ll have Dia use Discord Song to feed Ark’s Pain stacks.

Are you sure you didn’t want me to heal you first?
I can take a few more hits from him. You were in worse condition than I am. I’ll be fine, don’t worry so much.

Edward was left with a lot lower HP, and a direct hit from Rush Edge would have finished him off, so I opted to have him heal himself first.

I really meant to do that one! Heh heh...

Eugh... I can see how he drove off the dragons...
Hang on, Ark! I’ll have you fixed up in a moment!

Just like old times.

Skull crush!

Oh that’ll make it much easier to get more Pain stacks.

I’ll have Stella soften Takehaya up with Defense Down, now that he’s more vulnerable to ailments.

Since more people took damage from Rush Edge this time around, I’ll have Edward patch up the party with Cure All.

Time to start building up Pain stacks.

I got you all covered!

...Thanks.
Or maybe not.

I quickly realized I only had Cure All at level 1. Which uh, might be a tad too weak, to say the least.

Consider this payback for how hard ya smacked us!

Heh, I guess we both had the same idea.

He can also heal himself to set you back a bit if your damage is lacking.

Hmph, I should have known that wouldn’t have worked so easily on you again.

Agh, gonna have to wait 1 more turn before I can start having Ark go to town. Ark and Dia have a currently have a 56% chance of landing their ailments on him.

Shattering chop!

Let me show you how far this world has come in 5,000 years!

Now that Stella’s preparations are all done, it’s time for her to start getting serious.

How do you like that, Takehaya?!
That is quite impressive, I must say. And somewhat frightening.

Stella can just utterly destroy Takehaya while he’s in Human mode. Unfortunately if he’s in Dragon mode, that’ll be cut down to a measly 453 points of damage. It’s very important to pile on as much damage as you can in the appropriate modes.

Good as new!

NYAHAHAHAHAA! Oh yer in for a real beating now!

If he doesn’t beat us down first!

This is overkill.

Time to break out the big doses!

Gonna use Miracle Cure for a big AOE heal this time since Takehaya has quite a lot of spread damage to deal with.

Ya wanna see what we got? I’ll show ya what we got!

Time for Ark to start unleashing massive amounts of pain.

As for Dia, I just had her do whatever since she doesn’t have much to do now.

All are healed!

Beat that, chucklenut!

Ark is basically my main damage dealer for the fight. Triple Kiss completely ignores Takehaya’s gimmick since it’s non-elemental damage (though it still benefits from the Bloom bonus), which isn’t ideal if Takehaya is in Human mode, as it won’t benefit from the double damage, but it’s fantastic if he’s in Dragon mode, as it’ll deal full damage regardless. That’s my main plan for damaging Takehaya if he swaps to Dragon mode as well. This party only has access to physical attacks. If he swaps over to Dragon mode, Stella and Edward can’t do a damn thing! Ark ensures I’ll still be able to whittle his health down if he swaps over to that mode, and especially if RNG makes his AI get stuck in that mode.

You were saying?
Point... taken...

Well that’s a bit of a setback.

Not my best work.

Okay you’d think now would be the perfect time to cast Miracle Cure, right?

Time to get serious!

NOPE! I’M GOING FOR DAMAGE!

Don’t worry Ark, help is on the way!

Because I’ll have Dia revive Ark since she isn’t doing much at the moment. I’ll use an EX-boosted Hypno Crystal to revive Ark at a point where Takehaya can’t one shot her. Why not just have Edward revive her?

CHAOS DUNK!

Because why would I ever pass up the opportunity to show a Healer dealing quad digit damage?! Welcome to the club, Edward.

Up and at them!
Heh, thanks you two.

Edward!
I won’t go down that easily! Not yet!

Not much more of this fight left to go. Yeah, Takehaya’s AI didn’t get a chance to swap modes once. Aside from that 1 turn where he cast Cure, he just spammed Rush Edge all battle. His AI has a bad tendency to get “stuck” in 1 mode as a result.

Phew! We... we actually did it! We really did it!
I must say, I’m quite impressed... You all held up well against him. Now then...

Takehaya can be a tough fight, but if you can manage his attacks and dish out all the damage you can at the right opportunities, he should go down with enough effort.

A flash of white.

A book appears over Takehaya.

You... put up quite a fight yourself too...
Even after all this time, you’re still one tough bastard to take down. Heh heh...
Take the Dragon Chronicle. The data from the old war. It contains everything we learned about the Dragons. Use it wisely. I ended up like this from abusing our research.
So this thing is how ya...
Careful with that now. This world does not need anymore human and dragon hybrids running amok.

Odyssey, if anyone alive is worthy to bear this knowledge, it's you.
We’ll make sure to put it to good use.
So we can go and take down Haze and Niara with this, right?!
...But this isn't all there is to the Dragon Chronicle. Key elements are missing. And in order to get what you need, you're going to have to rip it out of me. Giving you my DNA is the only way I have left to assist the war for Eden. Everything in the Chronicle is still just a guess at the true nature of Dragons. To be certain about it, you're going to need to to disentangle my code.
You say you'll die...
Yeah, that's right. But my life as a human ran out a long time ago. ...Odyssey. This power might be a way forward for humanity. I'll do anything for that.
...I understand.
It's okay, I get it. I'd feel the same way.
Is that so? I wish we'd met while I was still alive. We could have shared a drink together.
Heh. You said it. But I'm glad I got to meet you here, at least.
...Odyssey. I guarded this world at any cost in my era. Now it's your time, and your turn to stand. For the sake of this world, for the sake of our Eden... You must crush the Dragons to protect life itself.
We’ll make sure to do that. You have our word, Takehaya. Thank you.
Takehaya...
At the time, I didn't think I would ever see you again, Aitelle... But, this is really goodbye. Aitelle... my dear Aitelle.
Takehaya... Takehaya!
Heh... You've always been so emotional, Aitelle. My darling. Everything about you is perfect, and knowing you made my life perfect. Thank you.
Takehaya... Takehaya?! ... Takehaya?!!

Takehaya disappears.

Farewell, Takehaya. After all this time, you finally found peace...

My world has been devoured by the Dragons, and everyone is gone. My sister and I prayed to the gods for salvation. Why didn't they answer us? Because Dragons made us. They are truly our gods...
You're wrong, Aitelle. I can't deny the Dragons were our creators. But they're certainly no gods of mine, or of yours! We have the power to answer our own prayers.
...You still persist, contending against heaven itself? Do you not recognize them as your creators? Yet you would fight them. How do you have the strength to go on, knowing you will lose everything?
That's where strength comes from. The more to lose, the stronger you can be. Takehaya himself was stronger because he had you to value and protect. Until it is a certainty that all is lost, I'll keep hope alive and carry the fight.
When you say it, it sounds so simple.

Right! This planet has survived dragon invasions before. We’ll make sure it happens again.

Doris joins our party.

Doris, you really are a lot like him. It's why I told you all about the Dragons. I meant to stay quiet... Farewell, humans, kinfolk to my beloved. I hope you succeed.
Thank you for your help, Aitelle.
Goodbye, Aitelle. I'm truly sorry for your loss.
