S02E12: Lava Wall

LAST TIME: Luci was nearly murdered in the shower. Herasia has abandoned her.

This is supposed to tell us we're meant to do some grinding. Yes.

Except the game lets me skip it. I think it's cos I'm level 50.

Anyway, we get a little passage here about how Luci gets tougher and all that. She also visits Fanta time to time and makes friends.

And she found Herasia again. Then one day, she's... bathing I guess when Zanbard appears.

I'm actually unsure if she is meant to be bathing nude or not given a line later in this scene.

Zanbards like whatever I don't give a crap I have a letter for you from Random. But then he tells her not to open it until he tells her the second bit of news.

It's time for Luci's first real trial.

Also Luci will be getting some help. She's actually very excited by this, since she's become fast friends with this Almydion.

Zanbard says Almydion is waiting for them right now, and Luci objects saying she's not dressed.

Is she like wearing and bathing in some ragged ass clothes she hasn't changed for 2 months or something. I'm so confused.

Zanbard then teleports them both to another location.

Luci then notices Herasia.

Herasia is allowed to come along on the trial!!

AND HE GOT EXTRA FLUFFY! :blessed:

Almydion is also just happy to be here.

When Luci asks where they are, Zanbard says we're currently 4500 metres up.

In front of some cave very, very few have dared to enter.

Zanbard gives us a hint even though he's absolutely against hints. Why

Zanbard also tells us he can full recover us forever and ever as part of the trial and then refuses to say any more.

I choose to interpret Angel Caller as meaning this:

but he just doesn't feel like doing it right now. Still think the guitarist and the trumpeter are cutest.

As usual, he fucking sucks. His spell selection is not all that great either.

From this column here...

We get a second one of these amulets. Not that it actually helps us, since it's an infinite use battle item and not an equippable item. I guess it'd be nice to find if you didn't get the one in LP1.

Anyway, the first area is a crossroads and we go left first.

We do not save this chicken. It is cursed. We don't get any dialogue, it just flashes colours faster and faster until...

We're fighting this thing! It's not very hard. I have Luci cast Protection a couple times, while Herasia and Almydion both use the amulet we just nabbed. EVen with Protection up, Quur still one-shots Almydion with a crit that does nearly twice his max HP, I didn't get to see how damaging he would be to Herasia, but he sure didn't damage Luci all that much.

He has an assload of HP so while Herasia keeps spamming the amulet, I have Luci cast Razor Sun for 80 MP(!) but it does 999 damage to him. It still needs a bunch of casts.

We get our reward.

I pick up some other treasures here and there, and then backtrack to Zanbard to refill our MP. Then I head back to the crossroads.

If you try to go north, we just find a locked door and... is that a cat?

We go this way instead.

We get a much too long winding path with a teaser chest to boot.

This time a dog turns into this. I use the exact same tactics as last time to best it. Almydion does not go down but the fight does take way longer. This thing must've had the full 9999HP.

And we get this. I Egress out and get Zanbard to heal us again.

We go down the middle cave and find a sort of maze-like area. It's way too large but not all that hard to navigate, fortunately.

There's three sub-caves, only one of which we need to enter.

how many types of rock are we gonna collect

Anyway, this time a ram turns into an alligator. This is by far the easiest and quickest boss and the usual tactics quickly overwhelm it.

Oh no. This better not be like THE Green Pearl. Last thing the Deport needs is the corruption of an evil sorceress twisting peoples minds and then leaving them to die when they're no longer needed, The One Ring style.
Huh. The Green Pearl was a rip off of The One Ring all along!

Well, good books anyway. I liked Emphyrio, the two Cugel books and the Demon Princes series a lot more tho.

Anyway, I backtrack to the maze cavern and make my way to a certain spot.

Ths voice says its name doesn't matter (even though no one asked) and congratulates us on finding the three thingys we need. I'm still not sure why the red one is a diamond when Zanbard said pearls, but w/e.

It opens the doors at the crossroads for us.

I get some things from the rest of the maze. The other two caves are unnessecarily large and are entirely empty but for the infinite fanta berry room here and a... chest with a phoenix feather in it. Luci can cast Phoenix Shine!!!! It's not even very expensive in MP!!!

-Now- I get healed up by Zanbard.

And we confront the cat past the doors.

is that a dragon quest

Anyway we kill it with the usual tactics.

why are there two red pearls but also one is actually a diamond. also why did we get this one on the otherside of the door. i dont understand.

As we progress deeper into the cave, a loud roar startles Almydion and especially Herasia. Luci doesn't give a shit though.

On the long path north, we find a chicken. It's a normal chicken. We do not save it either. R.I.P.

A cat turns into a drake! I've been fighting baby versions of this as random encounters here. Now, while I do use the usual tactics here, this boss can sometimes one hit K.O Herasia and Almydion even with Protection up. And do most of Luci's HP on a crit.

When we beat it, Herasia yowls a bit.

Why can you understand Herasia now

Anyway, it drops the Lava Orb and we grab it and Luci says something about wanting to know why we had to do this trial.

Then I find a Pine Apple I used on Luci, and Egress.

Zanbard is unresponsive at first. Then he takes the orb and says he'll teleport them to Fanta.

Also Herasia and Almydion are no longer with them. Zanbard says they're waiting patiently in their rooms at Fanta, like they think Luci must be doing.

Zanbard then starts talking about how this test was really about Luci taking charge and directing the other two. Though Zanbard does maintain that Almydion got some benefit out of it.

Then he leads Luci to where we fought the alligator and...

This is the real trial apparently. They walk to the 'top' of the rock and Luci is shocked to see the monsters, asking what they're doing here.

Bath time! Luci freaks out and says WE'RE not creatures of the volcano though!!!!!

He tells her that her body is automatically adjusting to prepare her for a great gift.

Hahahahaahahaha

She does so.

Anyway Luci says its been three days since Zanbard helped her gain the LAVA ELEMENT and now she's so excited and all.

And yes, she is in fact, starting to learn one of the best and most iconic spells in the whole series.

There's some new NPCs in Fanta. Luci seems to know these last two.

Meanwhile to this guy, Luci says wow GandJe Proud is very far from here. Uh... yeah, and you're from Rillia, which is even further from here still!

Almydion hangs out in the item shop.

No one says anything really interesting, sadly.

We head into the mountains to meet Zanbard.

At the mountain crossroads, we find Herasia. Apparently he hates the mountains! Luci assures him we will be leaving relatively soon.

Making our way to the last area down the western path automatically starts a cutscene at the plateau.

He says thats a pretty short amount of time to do so, so he wants to see Luci cast Lava Wall a bunch. He'll provide some help so she does not faint.

And cast it a lot she does!

And then he basically says yup, ready for the last trial, and you can take your new friends since magicians won't journey alone. So we have to find them and tell them and then take a weeks rest.

And I think we'll leave off here, so I can do the last trial and the 'postgame' in the same update.

Next time, we're going mountain climbing and spelunking and there'll be magic and a dragon!
