S03E07: Day 2: Sweet Little Potato and the Man.

More R-word btw

The Grand Coryool will have to wait.

The bird we bought for Sarah hangs out with Guanidia and Herasia. Also, it's already got four baby chicks with it. This happens immediately after you buy it, so we didn't miss anything.

I mentioned before that Wendie and Sarah will bicker if they're in the party when you speak with Guanidia...

She's such a brat.

She'll even complain if Wendie isn't in the party.

I'm with Random.

Meanwhile in the attic, Nash is contemplating an even more unique dark and edgy take on Pokemon than Reborn did.

Sarah calls Wendie the R-word for this.

Back to the hideout.

We head westward.

That southern bridge is the way to the Mod. Sci. Inst.

We'll be dealing with the Giants shortly.

Pass by a village....

And the TERROR WOODS!

And hit the western edge of the map.

This place isn't named but it's a pet equipment store.

Herasia gets a sidequest from this dog in the store. His masters fiance has been abducted.

There's also rats in the basement. These are some of the relatively few regen fights in the game but you only get 2 XP and PP from them. Herasia even only gets one slayer point (and thus 20 Bonus XP) from them. However, there is a point to why they're here, that we shall see before all that long.

I also bought some stuff from the store for both Guanidia and Herasia despite the fact I won't be using them too often. Doesn't hurt to be prepared.

We get paid our Cat Berry...

Meh.

Anyel hangs out here for the rest of the game but her name is Puffa now. Her boyfriends name is Puff.

Also, this mushroom thing tells us about a sick dude.

Some treasure...

Nice, we taught this to Luci in LP1 and its still a decent spell even after the stat scaling down. I teach it to Sarah.

NE of those buildings is our next destination! Yes! A dungeon, finally! Except this is a bit of a gimmick dungeon at this point.

The first things we find in the fort are a couple Rubbish Rats...

Least we got some tea though.

The giants seem to employ weak ass human guards for some reason. They don't even get a hit in on us.

lol at Randoms line for Thunder Crush. Can't even be bothered to think of a cool thing to say.

Just past the six man pack of guards is a throne with a save point on it. There's a locked door directly behind it, and halls leading to the left and right.

The left hall just has a rat filled room. You can get to the main part of the fortress past it, nut its better to go via the right path.

On the right path we meet a spectacularly over-confident lone guard.

Thunder Dom is a good name. Fantastic even.

This is the other reason to go right. Yeah, it's not much, but it's something.

Into the fire...

So you see those guys. Those are giants. They are very strong. We can take on individuals, maybe. It's extremely risky, but two or more? Forget it.

We're going to run circles around them.

The main hall is huge and filled with DOZENS of giants. And we can't run from battle if they catch us.

There's a bunch of loot to get in here. The giants actually have a decent walk speed, but it's nothing compared to ours. Good enough that they could easily corner you with their numbers and the fact they're coming from every direction though.

A key we really need...

A shitty ass sword that's nowhere near as good as TeAndal.

Another key...

I get caught by that nearest giant, sadly.

Oh no, we're being pursued by the cast of Romance of the Three Kingdoms!

The very first thing that happens is it one shots Luci. Luckily Sarah's Shield UP boosts her Defense a lot, and Wendies Lucien Konikcut boosts the partys speed enough that we can go first after that. Then we do a bunch more buffing and debuffing and then wail on the giant until its few thousand HP are expended. The reason why we can't do this with all the giants is that there's seriously a lot of them and we don't have the MP to take on even a small fraction.

Also, I could have easily lost anyway. Sarah only just barely survived the hit that got her after her Shield Up! And Shield Up is single target! Luck was partially on my side!

Also the XP and PP reward aren't even all that worth it.

Doesn't sound like anything super good.

Right after that I bump into a Cusinart which is even worse. Sometimes they double hit, so even after all the buffing and debuffing sometimes it'll just flat out kill someone in a single turn.

I still manage to win, but we use a lot of MP on reviving, healing and rebuffing.

Then I bump into this guy and he ends my run. Reload.

I get back here, only running into one Five Men Slain this time. They always double hit so getting started on them can be really tough, but if you make it through the first turn or two via luck, the buffs/debuffs will have rendered them useless.

All the giants are weak to Fire and Laser so Razor Sun and Lava Wall are great on them.

Thank fuck for that save point.

The hall may have been safe but there's giants in the next room.

Grab some loot, and pull the lever that's the main reason we're here.

Then I backtrack to the main hall.

Skillfully dodge giants...

One of those shelves has a Savior Page.

Slaughter some guards...

And get a bunch of treasure!

While the new shield isn't good for Random, it goes great on Wendie. Luci and Sarah cannot use it.

I have to fight another Five Men Slain as I return to the main hall and Luci learns Soul Drinker again.

Suc

Eyes on Luci. She's slurping up souls now.

We flee the main hall to the north. This is what the lever opened.

More guard murder.

And Random learns a defensive buff. Not too bad!

Thankfully, there's another save point nearby.

This switch opens that gate there, but we won't go through right now. I backtrack to the previous hall and go left.

Slay guards, go upstairs.

Slay rats, enter room.

This would be a pretty challenging boss fight right now.

So we steal their book and leave. That chest on the other side is an explosive trap of such power it wipes the party without fail. And even if we did survive it in the late game (still somewhat unlikely), it's... empty!

Teach this to Luci.

South of that room is another currently impossible battle.

However, there's a secret path in the rat hall...

Woo! I continue south.

And fight this Cusinart. Nearly die doing so.

And it turns out to be for nothing, anyway!

So back downstairs we go.

And through the gate we opened earlier. Which leads us into a large hall, but nowhere near as large as the first one.

It's also ridden with giants.

Man N' Potato.

... These guys are probably meant to be the most dangerous but they're also the easiest. They do powerful charged attacks a lot but that gives you plenty of time to use their off turns to buff and heal and all.

Meh.

There they are!!!

The Duchess and Sandy basically just say they're gonna kill us if we don't escape quick and Randoms like Okay.

Oh... Indy, you motherfucker. I forgot about the aura keeping Egress from working! I have to dodge the giants all over again as I make our way out. Fight one more by accident and boy was it close.

Look at that MP. Dang.

After a short chat where Sandy relays that she's in Metrolia as an economic advisor, she asks if she can instead chill with Random because she's still traumatised by her abduction.

I immediately take her to get her IQ tested.

And in the hideout she ponders enlarging it.

"Sandy is a beautiful lady, mother of one, who has been studying longly economics. That's the reason why she was travelling up to Metrolia.

Happy and playful, she's always there to create a good atmosphere. Fast, she can help all around with her wicked and efficient spells, despite a lack of body strength.

QUOTE:
"Hey, I'm NOT a fighter, I'm an economist! I want holidays and beach volley, not spiders and rats, yo!"

Anyway, back to Metrolia!

I switch Sandy into the party for a moment. Yeah she uses a lot of weapons and I think she's the only gun using partymember.

She does not have much spell variety... right now.

We turn in the quest we just completed and apparently members get a 10% bonus on quest rewards!

Nice.

We go down the main hall and...

The big guys are mad. But this guy is just a regular dude and goes down in one turn of normal attacks.

Oh my god.

At least Coryool is enjoying this.

Why indeed.

If Sandy is in the party during this fight she'll get upset and Random will say he'll protect her.

The Duchess praises Sandy for taking it upon herself to go on a dangerous quest and gives her a Warriors Nectar to drink. She makes her drink it right then and there so we can't give it to someone better.

Oh well.

I also buy the "Metrolian Castle" menu wall off a woman.

And the guy that wanted us to kill some monsters guarding a dungeon has been convinced by his daughter to just let us skip doing that.

Of course, he doesn't go and tell the Fighter's Guild right away. I have to leave and renter Metrolia a few times before he does it.

We immediately get our quest for the third and final rank, Baron. And we won't be able to do it for a long while yet.

No fancy new card, just a double.

I leave Metrolia and start grinding encounters on the plains and woods just outside.

These are what we want. They have a 6% chance of dropping what I need.

After a few minutes, I nab it.

Woo!

This is one of the only things you -have- to do before Mosquito Swamp, or you'll likely miss it. Most of the other quests can be left for a few days if not forever.

We head back eastward, and pause right in front of Giant's Fortress. Then we go around and north of it.

The collection of graves on the left aren't anything, but the ones on the right...

... is a small bonus area.

Random sighs and starts to tell her off when she adds 'Truth hurts.' and Random then flips out and yells at her about never changing.

We can steal the PP right next to him and he'll get mad but who cares-

If Sandy is in the party, she cares, will make us put it back and Yveen will take notice of how she is exhibiting a very base level of human decency and reward her for it.

If you talk to the bard again, she'll give him another PP each time, and yes the amount on the ground will grow higher and she still won't let us take it.

Wendala is not crazy about this new direction and calls Sandy stupid. We get the option on if we want to go along with Sandy or not.

We do, and Sandy gets even more of a boost.

Then we walk around the edge of the map to get this crap.

Time to go.

We fight another dragon. I guess it's slightly more challenging than the Zombie Drajke, but it's still a nothing encounter.

This is the only reward too. Doesn't seem to be anything in its lair.

Oh well. Six dragons to go.

I leave the game running for ten minutes at this point. Because the next part I did was buy stuff from the shops that are only open at specific times.

The tile Random is looking at is where one shop appears at from XX:20:XX to XX:39:XX. Oh and it's there right now. You can't see it's there even when it is. Lol.

Anyway, the shop does have two other locations it is open at at other times but they're inaccessible on Day 2.

This is south east of the Giants Fortress btw.

He sells some generic crap, however he also has special deals.

I heartily accept. He gets new deals now and then too, so...

To the NW of the Giants Fortress (you can still see it!) a village pops up from XX:45:XX to XX:59:XX
This place, as you can see, is visible. It also has other locations, three actually, but all three are inaccessible on Day 2.

We offer to let yet another hobo move into the headquarters!

These are all one time purchases.

Also, there's a blank book here. Just felt like mentioning that for some reason.

So between these two shopping trips, we just spent 120k PP.

I pop in the HQ to check on Boris and then pop back out.

This is the other thing you have to do before Mosquito Swamp, or the Metrolian Guard basically takes care of it for you. And take all the loot too.

Let's go!

This is probably the easiest and most straightforward dungeon in the game. These guys dont even have more than 200 HP, so everyone can one shot them. I still had Luci lava Wall them for time's sake.

A second ambush lets us loot this item.

Then on the third ambush Luci finally pipe sup even though I've been using Lava Wall the whole time. I guess this like a baby dungeon for if you didn't import and/or play the prior games at all.

Past the entrance hall is a ?dining hall? where seven solo fights try to chase you down. As you may guess, the solo battles are beyond easy.

That door is locked too.

The other two chests just had fish in them.

And we get our first Slayers level!!! So yeah, like I said earlier, enemies give different characters different Slayer bonuses. These assassins are giving Random one or two each. And also ten bonus normal XP. The Slayer Points eventually level up a characters Slayers Level and they get bonuses which can raise from great to shitty. Like, the 8th and highest level for a few characters, which requires TONS of grinding is just... +2 HP or something insanely insulting. But it's not always stat ups. Sometimes it's new skills/spells, or gear, or opening up a new area or quest.

Neat idea I wish he'd done more with and made less tedious to grind. It never returns in future games thus far.

Sad.

The Bronze Key lets us loot a small... vault?

I stick the relic helm on Sarah due to its resists.

The Silver key leads to a more populated area.

Also, this is the Slayers XP message. You can and probably should turn it off in the Dreambook but I usually leave it on, since there's no other way to tell if someone is getting Slayers points and how many they're getting, unless you know this shit by heart. I'd just turn it off is I was grinding respawning enemies for Slayers.

We get some loot and the way forward.

Five more solo fights in here.

Techinically six, because one guy resists dying until you kill him again.

Secret door...

Artifact rapier we won't be using.

And a bunch of PP.

Time to confront the boss.

He already knows we've been sent by Metrolia to kill him and says something about he's smashed all our friends who came before us.

So this fight has one wrinkle. Gerbel full-heals every single turn. However, he has less than 1000 HP and Luci's Lava Wall does 700 damage to him. This is an extremely brief boss fight.

lol.

And Luci finally learns that spell she wanted to learn.

Make sure to grab the stolen vase before we go...

The throne fully restores HP and MP when you stand on it, so I guess that's Gerbels trick. What a handy throne. We should keep it.

Yup. We sure did that.

We head back to the Silver Eagle Inn in Metrolia.

Random answers his own question by saying it's Sandy's.

Someone apparently sent it up here??

AAAAAAAAAAAA

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I hate that!

Why does he look like... THAT

'CONS: Not enough MP' is a funny way of putting it.

BRAWLS

"Guld is Sandy's kind golden retriever. Fierce and brave, he is always walking a few steps behind his mistress, whenever she's in the party too.

Despite an obvious lack of tactics, Guld can bite like no other, and when an enemy is trapped in his jaws, chances are small that he escapes!"

QUOTE:
"GRRRR..."

Why. You gave the cat an IQ.

Well, fine. Let's wrap this update up.

Here's a conversation we can only get if Leanda is a Celestial Geomancian.

I guess we only played Coryool on his bad days.

And here's Leanda as a Celestial Geomancian.

So about Guld. You may remember that Random's host, Pierre, in Rillia had a dog named Gold (though Random said the dog was his. Who knows). Not sure if that's meant to be Guld one way or another. Furthermore, Guld is based on a dog that Indy really did own and love very dearly (deceased by now, sadly. God fucked up.)

Anyway, that's all for the moment! Next time we'll be doing... Lots of stuff! The Slime Nest! The Thieves Den! The Crypt of 7000 Skulls! The Prison of Desa! Pirates! And much more! We might be able to do the rest of the Day 2 sidequests in the next update!
