: Interesting you should say that. I don't feel as though I had much of a choice at all.

: No. And no need to tell him I said that. But after everything I'd seen Cia through, I couldn't watch her get thrown to the dogs at the whim of some King.

: Ah... I understand.

: But yours is a different story I imagine?

: Yes. It was a lifelong dream of mine to serve the Crown. Like my brother before me.

Irving has a prerecorded voice line of "Sterling" which I vaguely remember playing here?

: I see. Have you been at this for a while, then?

Incidentally, Irving's father is not dead and not in royal service. We'll get to him eventually.

: Real combat? No. Not any longer than you.

Out of the two of them it's pretty heavily implied Elias has seen real combat, especially if those bandits keep attacking the village.

: Oh. That's promising news.

: I have trained, though. Quite extensively. And Lincoln and Bianca are experienced themselves. We're likely in the best of hands, as far as new recruits go.

Ooh, insecurity! I don't know if we're supposed to believe Elias is a grown man to Irving's teenager, but it's plausible judging from the other supports.

I'm probably reading too much into it, aren't I?

: One thing I wouldn't do is intentionally lie to you about something like that, Elias.

Clunk! I'm kind of ok with it though, if you read it as a teenager under pressure desperately trying to impress an adult warrior. It's exactly the kind of stupid shit I'd have said at seventeen.

: I'll trust your word on that.

: That was really cool of you to sign up to serve the people!

: Didn't have a choice.

: Damn, Lincoln's speech was that good?

: Nah, but I couldn't just let Cia get hurt. She's been through a lot of bullshit and I couldn't watch her get killed because of some mad king.

: Oh. I get it.

: Why are you here?

: I've always wanted to be a king's soldier like my brother Sterling. Sterling! Sterling! Ster-

: You've done this for a while?

: Uh...shit. No. You got me. That was my first real battle.

: That's... not a great sign.

: But I've done a lot of training. And...and Lincoln and Bianca are total gigachads! We're totally in good hands.

: Well, that's something. Try not to hurt the kid's feelings, eh?

: I'd never lie to you about something like that! I'll phrase it real awkwardly because I'm a teenager.

: You seem like a good kid, and I don't want to be a dick.
