Oh Christ no. This is going to be exposure to the two most boring men in the game talking about Sterling, isn't it?

: Then you must have caught him in a good mood.

: How did you meet?

I think my biggest problem with Irving is that he's a natural leader who has no ambition to do anything or lead anyone to a place other than where he's expressly ordered to go.

: At Vulture's Eyrie, in Frostsoul of 1100. Did Sterling ever speak of it?

All of the months in this universe have stupid names. In addition to "Frostsoul" there's "Vigorsun". This game has the energy of the learning disabled kid who won't shut up about his Dungeons and Dragons campaign.

: Only afterwards when he returned on leave. He was very secretive about it before then.

I get that Irving's a teenager, but he doesn't seem to have an actual plan or reaction to anything. He tells Maren he wants to make his mark, but he doesn't have anything he wants to achieve or change. The closest thing he has to a goal is to be like Sterling. He doesn't want to reform the kingdom or destroy some fearsome enemy or even just protect his friends in this awkward situation. He laments the king's vileness once and then mutely accepts that he can go forth and kill a bunch of people he has no quarrel with or reason to fight because some dumb guy with an apostrophe in his name committed a war crime.

: No doubt his discretion is why Varic trusted him with the mission. And his skill, of course.

: And why did Varic trust you?

: I had been to Vulture's Eyrie once, and knew several ways in and out. But to be honest, even my knowledge of our purpose there was strictly need-to-know at the time.

I swear to you I did not photoshop in that hat. I legitimately did a double take when it appeared on the screen.

It's from the DLC (spoilers for characters we don't have). I haven't purchased the DLC. So... thanks, Dark Deity developers, for adding this wonderful experience to my base game?

It's gone now. Anyway, Irving. He's boring and he has no drive! It's impossible for me to imagine him leading anyone to a McDonalds, let alone commanding men in combat.

: Always has been. When I was ten, Brookstead was raided by a large force of bandits. Sterling took it upon himself to rally the townsfolk and repel the attack.

: So I've heard. That retelling always made him quite bashful.

: I'm not surprised. He's never been one to rest on his laurels. Always kept his eyes focused on the next great achievement.

: And that has served him well.

: It definitely has. I just hope I can do the same.

: A worthy goal.
