Game Mechanics: Gathering From Item Points

Ah, gathering. A bit of an annoying mechanic in the DS era of Etrian Odyssey, but one that's a bit necessary to give parties alternative means of upgrading their shop in case they can't take on the enemies at the current point they're at in the game, and also giving them another source of funds to be able to purchase supplies and equipment. You can't gather from item points unless your party invested SP in the relevant gathering skills, or has a Farmer with Harvest. Since SP is a precious resource, some people prefer to make dedicated farming teams that exclusively invest in gathering skills or skills that make it easier, while main parties are able to save that SP for more relevant skills. Which is a strategy that Atlus recognizes and even encouraged in promotional materials at the time.

Gathering is pretty similar to how it was in the first two Etrian Odyssey games, where you gathered items of various rarities from one, and starting from the second game, had a chance to be ambushed by monsters upon doing so. Now EO3 made some further adjustments to the mechanic. You're now allowed to consecutively gather from an item point for one as a nice bit of quality of life. However, rare items cannot be gathered under normal circumstances anymore. Instead you'll just get common and uncommon materials from these points. On the bright side, the gathering ambushes introduced in EO2 can't be run into normally either.

Instead, both of these mechanics now activate differently. After consecutively gathering from a point for a while, the game will then go into a period where all gathers grant only the designated rare item of that item point, but gives a chance to get into an encounter for each attempt. How this works is that first, the game goes into what's known as the common gather period. It generates a random number depending on the item point itself, such as if it rolls a 6, gathering from that point 6 times, including the initial gather attempt, will trigger the rare gather period.

The rare gather period is similar to this, however, this is how you gather the rare items from the item point as every single consecutive gather during this time is guaranteed to give the rare item. Like with the common gather periods, the game determines how many times you're allowed to gather from it when you go into the rare gather period. If you go beyond the generated number, such as the game allowing you to gather 4 rare items, attempting to gather consecutively for a 5th time will trigger a battle with monsters and end the gathering period. You can avoid this by giving up early, or by giving up when you see you ran into the maximum number of rare gathers allowed.

Bizarrely enough, unlike in EO2, gathering ambushes in this game are no longer guaranteed blindsides. In fact you can actually get preemptive encounters on them because these gathering ambushes are just flagged as normal battles for some reason. Oh and also unlike EO2, the blindside encounters are no longer custom made out of Atlus's sheer hatred to vaporize your party on the spot. the encounters are just pulled from the tile they're on, which just consist of the stronger formations on the floor. In most cases the gathering ambushes are the same across all item points on the floor, but a mistake in assigning encounters causes some ambushes to differ at certain item points on floors 20 and 24.

Keen Nose can bypass these mechanics entirely, as it gives a chance of just getting the rare item from a common gathering period. This chance can range from 1% to 50% depending on how many party members know the skill, and how much SP they have invested in it. All instances of Keen Nose in the party are added up together to make the rare material chance, and the game rolls for the chance upon making a gathering attempt. If it succeeds, you get the rare material. If not, it just gives a common or uncommon material at the standard rates. This means that you don't have to risk farming teams and never even have to trigger the rare gather periods to get rare items.

Gathering attempts for all item point types fully refresh upon hitting midnight, 00 AM. Double Crop can be used to refresh 1 to 10 gathering attempts for all item point types per cast depending on the skill's level.

Fun fact, rare gather periods were intended to function slightly differently. At some point they weren't intended to give you the rare item guaranteed, as there's some code that increases the chances of getting a rare item by 1% each time you consecutively gather during that time. However, this code now does nothing, as the rare gather chance during this time is always set to 100%.

The encounter formations you can encounter on that floor (or specific points in the cases of floors 20 and 24) are also listed should you get into a gathering ambush.
