...Just gonna leave these old saves here as a teaser of things to come.

The opening mode 7 crawl starts out with a bunch of details about the seed. Don't ask me why it shows letters instead of numbers for the seed itself.

Then this pops up at the end???

And we're off! As I understand it, more recent versions of the randomizer have a lot more options for character sprites, but here in the olden days of 2017 we're restricted to shuffling the playable cast among themselves and changing up color palettes. Thus, purple Shadow here.

No name for our protagonist yet unless you go back and look at the save screen again, but we can look ahead at what their stats and abilities will be once we're out of the magitek armor.

Not bad, not bad at all! I'll talk more about R-Sword once we can see it in action, but X Magic is obviously powerful, and they've got a solid base magic stat to use it with. ...Once we, you know, get some magic. It's possible for characters to roll into natural magic like Terra and Celes, but you need to actually have the Magic command first. Which seems like a meaningless distinction, but X Magic isn't Magic, it's X Magic. Therefore I can say with confidence that our mysterious friend is not a natural mage. (iirc this also locks them out of summoning espers)

Not that they'd be able to use them anyway, but BiggsVicks and Wedge sadly don't get randomized skillsets. Those stats though... What the heck are they wearing?

Oh. Alright then.

I hope you like gibberish enemy names, because that's all you're getting, bosses excepted. At least the guards still ended up with a human sprite?

As far as I can tell, the upgraded magitek loadout is always tied to Terra's slot. Similarly, the three basic beams seem to be immune to randomization. Everything else is fair game though, and damn, magitek doesn't play around. HyperDrive and Shock Wave are both single target damage, WaveCannon gives us a multitarget option, Blaster gives us multitarget instant death, and Schiller, uh, well. It's multitarget! I assume it applies a status? Hell if I know which one, though.

So of course I flub my inputs and go for plain old Fire Beam rather than any of the cooler stuff. Still enough to kill the Dagusk though.

Vicks and Wedge are a bit more limited, but they still have Blaster, so who gives a shit? TekMissile is a stronger option than the beams and Exploder is... certainly a button you could push.

The randomizer includes several QoL changes to account for abilities existing on characters they weren't intended to. One such change is that learning dances is universal, and the same goes for lores. Handy if we can find someone that uses either of those.

Oh no! Attack dinosaurs!

And that's how dinosaurs became extinct.

Unless I say otherwise, just assume I'm cheesing everything with Blaster.

I'm saying otherwise!

Not only does Blaster only hit one side of the screen, but on the right side it becomes single target for some reason.

Oh, that's... worse than the beams, actually.

Attack... samurai?

Attack samurai that are immune to whatever element WaveCannon is! I'm gonna guess lightning? TBH I've played so much FF5 that I wasn't expecting it to have an element at all.

That was the last scripted battle, by the way.

For some reason the randomized sprites aren't nearly as funny to me when it's just a random encounter.

Here's me finally testing out Schiller. It makes the screen flash, so I'm guessing it's supposed to inflict blind? Maybe if I were more familiar with the SNES translations I'd actually recognize this attack.

Side note: you may have noticed that Vicks is down to only 7 HP. Yeah, uh, we don't really have any healing to speak of.

Anyway. Whelk! Bosses are still where they're supposed to be, and generally their movesets are at least partially intact. Stats are still randomized, but obviously for the sake of progression they can't be too crazy.

I couldn't help myself.

Enemies have lots of new randomized attacks, with names that make more sense than the enemy names themselves, insofar as they use actual words, but they still don't give much of a clue as to what they actually do. In this case, the answer to that question appears to be nothing. Other attack names I came across in this update include "Fury Zinger" and "Ninja".

The fight's over pretty quick once I press the HyperDrive button and discover how much damage it deals.

Oh good, a healing item.

????? and the esper have a bonding moment, Vicks and Wedge get vaporized, you know the drill.

And we've got a name! The pool is all anime references, and I'll warn you now, I haven't watched nearly enough anime to recognize most of them.

Gotta check the clock before we skedaddle, of course.

A bit niche, but still ahead of the curve compared to the relics that would normally be available this early (which is to say, none). Considering our current healing situation, though, I almost would've rather had the elixir.

Might as well equip it anyway, and this hat upgrade that dropped from one of the random encounters.

Okay, so. Let's talk about R-Sword. Player abilities can pull from virtually anything that exists in base FF6, plus some new special options. One of these is R-commands, which randomly use an attack from a given selection, in this case Cyan's bushido/swdtech moves. (I'm probably going to default to GBA names for anything that isn't literally on screen.)

Most R-commands... aren't great, or at least you'd rather have a more consistent version of the same thing, but R-Sword is actually pretty solid. The only real dud result is the counter, and there's nothing actively detrimental unless you fumble into the drain attack against an undead enemy. Meanwhile, the whole back half of the bushido list is strong, and you've got a one in eight chance to just delete the encounter entirely. Plus, there's a tangible advantage over the normal bushido command, since you don't have to deal with the charge time mechanic.

Save early, save often! You never know what fresh bullshit is gonna get thrown at you.

The goggles, they do nothingsomething! The randomizer (at least with the flags I have on) fixes some of FF6's more egregious bugs, including the evade glitch, sketch glitch, and vanish/doom.

...Aaaand we died.

Let's try that again, but in the back row this time.

Next chest has a mithril rod that Rei can't use. Another QoL change: all weapons are compatible with SwdTech and Runic by default.

Later an encounter drops a shuriken. Rei can't use this either, but the shuriken line are equippable as normal weapons now. Scrolls are still only for throwing, though.

The flashback gives us a glimpse at Celes's replacement. Two people hiding their faces? I dunno, seems kinda sus...

I had to stare at this color palette far too long to figure out who it reminded me of, but eventually it came to me. It's Geoffrey, from Fire Emblem! Specifically his Path of Radiance design.

Alright Goten, what are you bringing to the table?

Oh wow, you suck! I mean, you have a magic command in FF6, so at worst you'll eventually be usable, but really? A whole ass ability slot dedicated to blowing yourself up? They do have very high speed, which sure, action economy is important, but if your actions have no value in the first place, that doesn't count for much. Their evasion is pretty decent too, but most of that is coming from their equipment.

Pop quiz! Which one is the real Mog?

Hint: it's the one that's higher level than everyone else. Koharu is... fine. No standout stats, but nothing awful, and their abilities are well rounded. Magic is magic, GP Rain is serviceable enough, and Capture, aka Mug, gives them some decent utility. Note the lack of an item command, though. IIRC, every character is guaranteed to have either magic or item, but not necessarily both.

The other mooglesRelms all have their own abilities too, but frankly I'm just going to be spamming fight the whole time. Also, three of them rolled Explode, just like Goten??? This is entirely too many explosions! Some of their equipment is as crazy as what Biggs and Wedge had, too. Shame we can't take it for ourselves.

We've already seen these enemies, but hey, more shurikens!

I almost made the mistake of engaging the “boss” with Goten's party, before remembering I should see if there's anything worth stealing.

Not really, as it turns out!

It does drop an autocrossbow, though. I don't remember anyone in this seed having Tools, so this is probably destined to become either vendor trash or coliseum fodder.

And we're outside! No tutorial house for us to loot, though. Beyond Chaos also has an ancient cave mode, and I believe this is where it lives.

Think I'll call it here for now. Next update will probably go all the way to the scenario split.
