Let's finish up this section of Deepwood.
Enemies here are still fairly easy. Algae and Duckweed is a weird name though. Like we aren't even in a water area, we're in a forest.
Friendly old guy to talk to here.
: It's been some time since I've had someone to talk to.
: Still, I can't help but feel a certain kinship with them. We should all strive to be more like Wooper, don't you think?
: And they don't even have arms!
Yes please.
: Wonderful.
: The rippling water and shady trees made this the perfect spot for a picnic. We'd set out a blanket and fish, eating little snacks from a basket.
He pauses for a sec.
: Well, one day we took a stroll here as we did, and set up our picnic. My daughter had prepared some lovely sandwiches for us both. She'd toiled over them the night before until they met her standards.
: I assumed my daughter's restraint had run out, and she'd started on her sandwich. That is, until I heard her say, "Dad, you were supposed to wait!" Our eyes met. It was clear neither of us was eating anything. The basket between us had been opened, but by who? We spun around, and what did we see?
: Oh, my daughter's face turned as red as one of her beloved strawberries then. But all I could do was laugh. And after a spell, she followed suit. Even the Spinda seemed to chuckle! It wasn't exactly the perfect picnic my daughter had envisioned...
: That was perfect enough for me.
Another pause.
: Ah, forgive me. I've run my mouth again, haven't I? Here, take this as a token of my appreciation.
: I know it looks worn, but it's tried and true. It served me well for many years. I hope it serves you well in the days to come. Come find me again if you'd like to chat some more. I haven't been to the beach in some time... Until next we meet.
He walks off. I didn't really have anything to say during that; normally I'm wary of big long text dumps and will snark at them to high heaven, especially after Reborn, but something about the old man's story is just kinda touching and also engaging? I liked the story, it was cute
Immediate whiplash. Also how dare you, bugs are cool and cute
This kid is rude. His first two mons are a decent level, but nothing too unreasonable.
But then he hits you with a level 23 Beedrill, and you have sunk cost of "I already KO'd his first two mons". Also a skill check of "pay attention to the levels of new mons brought out, don't assume they're all the same level as the first one sent out". He's not a problem for us right now, but if you took this path first he's a bit of a mean trick.
A nice score behind the bug catcher! Shred of Hope is self explainatory. Drill Run is an 80 power increase crit chance move, which means if you already used focus energy it's a guaranteed crit. The only downside is that 95% accuracy; from personal experience accuracy just seems rigged against you in general in pokemon games. You can probably fix it with Wide Lens though. Bullet Seed is another interesting move; it hits 2-5 times for 25 power each hit, and has good accuracy. A pokemon with Skill Link could get good use out of it. It's countered by Bulletproof, but of the pokemon who can have bulletproof, I haven't seen a single one in this game. Overall, some nice finds!
Let's stop neglecting Jigglypuff and bring them closer to our power level.
: They should have buried you then, you wicked child.
oookay then.
Not unreasonable you'd be paralyzed on this route, one of the trainers last update had a pokemon with static.
A trainer with a real name! Wooo!
No match for our team though.
Another 95% accurate move. Rock pokemon have it rough with the low accuracy moves, huh? 60 power, lowers targets speed. Not terrible, but not too impressive either. In theory, it's the perfect move to be boosted by technician, but no rock type pokemon learn technician, so you can't get both the 50% from same type bonus and the 50% from technician. Unfortunate!
: If you came to visit the tomb, I'm sorry. The way is sealed by an ancient sorrow. The mourning trees will not allow any to pass.
Mysterious girl vanishes. This smells like a sidequest.
Almost level 20! Not unmanageable on your first trip if you caught some stronger mons or used the shred of hope you get for catching 10 mons, but definitely unreasonable with the level 5's you start with.
Money and TM Magical Leaf! Magical Leaf is a special version of razor leaf; 5 more power and perfect accuracy but it trades it off by also hitting your partner in doubles. Neat!
This shack is locked; we'll be able to open it eventually.
And talking to the trees where the girl was reiterates that it's blocked by an ancient sorrow. Well, that's all of this section of Deepwood covered; we can go deeper into a new section, but I have other things on my mind for the rest of this update.
Fishing! Fishing will always land a bite; the only thing you need to do is react when the bite happens, and not press the button too early to cancel fishing. We can now check the fishing encounters for all the places we've been, so lets go on a fishing spree.
In Deepwood, we have Magikarp, Squirtle, Wooper, and Slowpoke. Magikarp evoles into Gyarados at level 20; I think most people know how good Gyarados is. Squirtle is another starter, so obviously they're good. Wooper and it's evolution Quagsire get an incredible ability in Unaware, ignoring any stat changes on the opponents which means if you buff your defenses to the max and know recover, you basically can't be touched (unfortunately, quagsire is deathly allergic to touching grass types). I've never used slowpoke or either of it's two evolutions, so I'm unsure how good it is.
Fishing in Ranger's Rest, we have:
I'm clueless as to how good most of these are. Froakie's the only one I know about; being another starter and having a busted ability in protean (type changes to match the move you're using, ensuring you always get the same type bonus). Apparently protean got nerfed in gen 9, but this fangame is based on gen 8, so that probably didn't backport.
The only difference in encounters between ranger's rest and silent gods is slowpoke. The spoiler doc said slowbro, but maybe it got changed or maybe I just missed it.
Our last fishing area is the beach. This sign helpfully reminds us that fishing exists and you should absolutely not do it. This is our hint that there's some really good stuff here.
First of all, Krabby is an asshole who took too many balls to be caught. Secondly, yes that's a motherfucking Kingdra just chilling here in this fishing encounter. Slowking too! I feel like Starmie's good judging by how often I see it but I wouldn't know. Chinchou with water electric is also a solid typing. Nice finds (except for you krabby fuck you I won't forgive you wasting that many balls)
While in the area, I pass by our fisherman friend! Let's see if he has any more stories to tell.
: I was hoping we'd have another chance to chat. The Staryu here are remarkably hardy.
Cute little hint that you can catch Staryu and Kingdra here.
: Would that we all possessed such tenacity, hm?
Yes please
: Very well.
: I wanted to teach her how to fish. We started with the basics. To be careful around the hook. To watch our surroundings when casting. How to reel in a catch. When I was satisfied, I let her drop a few lines. See if anything would bite.
: She was almost yanked into the water, face-first! But my daughter's a fighter! She dug in her heels, leaned back, and reeled the Pokemon in! A plump, pink Pokemon landed next to her, staring dumbly. A Slowpoke.
: But the instant I pulled out my knife, she'd thrown herself onto it. "No, daddy!" she cried, cradling the Slowpoke. "Don't hurt it!"
I can't imagine the heartless bastard who picks "Wrap it up" here.
You spared it, of course.
: I did. If you ever have children, you'll understand.
Another pause.
: I must apologize, young lady. That story ended on a more dour note than I'd intended. Please accept these as tokens of my contrition.
These would have been helpful a few moments ago, but I'll take em!
: I've little need of them anymore.
Another pause.
: I look forward to our next encounter.
He walks off again. That's the fastest path to the lake he's heading to, but it's blocked off to us by a strong trainer.
We never did catch all the encounters here? Let's fix that.
Some interesting mons here. Castform is cute and I imagine might be helpful if you plan on using weather. Marill has Huge Power, which means it's attack is doubled, and it gets belly drum for even more pain. Palossand I'm unsure how good they are, but they're a cool looking mon so I wouldn't be surprised if they're workable. Marshtomp is a middle-stage starter, the evolution of mudkip, so they're probably good. Crawdaunt is another hard-hitter; they get adaptability, which powers up same-type moves even more.
...Okay I'm really playing sloppy. Goddamnit. Rest in peace Trevenant, you were a hard carry real soldier.
Crawdaunt will be joining us to apologize.
This brings us to 75 pokemon caught; that's enough for a new reward!
That's really good.
A double reward too? Even better!
We don't have a gallade to use that galladite, but if we come across mega stones, we can now mega evolve specific Pokemon. This probably won't come into play for a bit, but this is really good.
