We're doing the Shadow Card tournament this time. First things first; if you card Arceus, you get the card with the best stats with A on all sides. It's good, but everyone cards Arceus and I'm special so I won't be doing it. Just showing it off though!
: Isn't this place sweet? Makes you forget all about the miserable failures of your life! No broken homes or poisonous parents or impending ocean! And hey, if you lose here you can just blame it on luck!
That's... kinda depressing dude
We won't be starting the tournament just yet; we can play against anyone here in the lobby for both money and strong cards, both of which are useful.
Course, you have to actually win first.
There we go. We get an Aggron from it; I'll be showing off the cards I win from all of these guys a bit further down.
: Sad rock noises. Cheerful rock pun suppressing growing anxiety.
: Just kidding, let's play again soon!
Sad pun noises. Cheerful LP writing concealing disappointment about the lack of pun.
: Since it's the first time you beat my real deck, I'm supposed to give you this.
(Blank Card obtained)
: Use it on a rock mon!
Sorry, use it on a rockman?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PDdC51EDWk&list=PL9085941C60B13C92
...I'm not sorry.
Anyways, using it on a rock mon, that's not a bad idea. In fact...
Let's catch one to use it on right now!
Shuckle is... kinda nuts. It has two A sides, and both of it's other sides are weak, meaning that your opponent can't capture it without giving you an opportunity to capture back. You could make a case for this being probably the best card in the game if you know how to use it. I put two in my deck.
: From now on, we'll just play for cards.
After you beat an opponent 5 times, they stop betting against you, so you can't farm them for infinite money sadly. If you want the big bucks, you're gonna have to do the tournament eventually. They still put cards on the line though, and I recommend doing that because they have more than 5 cards they can give you (just, I forgot to fight Micah more than 5 times. Whoops).
You probably get the idea here; I'm gonna play each card opponent multiple times to get all their money and a bunch of cards before starting the tournament. In the interest of keeping this update short, I'm mostly going to give highlights of this.
We already fought and (mistakenly) won against Chaddicus in a bonus update, so we already have his blank card. He's still the best though; he uses a fairy deck here instead of a fighting deck
: Scurry out the way you came before--...
: Oh no, that's a membership card. This place was once a haven for the finest players. Now... Ugh.
Hello to you too Dolores. She specializes in Ghost and Dark types; I find Dark and Fairy are the strongest types in Shadow Cards type-wise.
Sorry, who's the little pest now?
: Hmm? Is it over? Wasn't really paying attention.
Hey, up yours!
: Tch, I can't believe I have to give you this too. (blank card obtain) I don't even want to watch what you waste it on.
I will waste it on an army of shuckle and you can't stop me.
: I thought my bones were aching because of an approaching storm. Turns out they were right! My cards are still shivering from out last game!
Douglas is still a homie.
: Fortunately, the owner was kind enough to procure me some fresh cards for my deck. Shall we test them out together?
Wait, Suit gives out good cards? I thought he only gave out starter decks! Where's my good cards?
Scrimshaw me raw is such a good line.
Pictured: me noticing that he has an Arcticuno card, wanting it, and not having it when he stops betting, making me realize I need to keep playing past the betting point for some of my opponents best cards.
Hello Charlotte.
: Perhaps you'd like to face a prepared opponent this time? Dear Lara has helped fortify my deck.
Wait, Lara? That stuck up snob who's the card game champion? Liar.
: She's quite the fan of my escapades of course!
X to doubt. I forgot to take a screenshot of me beating her, but beat her I did.
: Excuse my blood's journey to my face, I had PLANS for that prize. (Blank card get).
It's Jaz, the edgy poem writer!
: World's so beatiful, when you close the doors, y'know? You're kind of nice. For a Wanderer. I don't meet many nice people.
Maybe not edgy, just depressed about the apocalypse. Understandable!
: Hic. Stop grinning. Shut up. Just play me or something.
She has really good stakes, so if you're confident about fighting a fire user you can get some good cash.
Stakes are meaningless of course if you lack skill.
: Put more effort into this. Don't you realize what's on the line? At least try to win.
...What, a giant pile of cash at the end of the tournament? I mean I guess that's a significant thing on the line.
She apologizes for snapping at you if you talk to her again. Or, well, apologizes any time you talk to her after the first.
: That was actually kind of fun. And since it's the first time you beat me here... (blank card obtained moment) Don't use it on a water card. I HATE water cards.
While fighting her, I got this weird scenario where it looked like I was losing hard...
But then somehow managed to turn it around. It's a very swingy game!
This person's new! We haven't talked to them before.
: Lara's always giving advice. It's infuriating. I don't want to study with her, I want to BEAT her.
: Anyways, I'm Stream. You looking for a game?
Sure. Stream gives water cards, and she even gave me a Tapu Fini as the first card. Very cool!
Damnit.
: I did it! I'm the best! I can WIN this!
: ...
: Ugh, even when I win I'm a mess.
I'm sorry
: Our last game plays endlessly in my mind. I see the grid in the flashing clouds. Will you face my new deck?
Won't say no to cash when fate guarantees it to me.
: Any amount is acceptable, as long as it brings fear to your heart. For this reason, I'll add a Dedenne to the stakes.
...pffft, sorry that's really funny. "I will bring terror to your heart! For you see, if you lose, you will never obtain this incredible Dedenne!"
: You're the first I've given this to. (blank card). Use it on a water card. Or flying.
What, so you can beat me easier? How about no?
Tenma, our first non-suit opponent is also here, and still pretty easy. So easy I already captured his blank card dialogue.
: This calls for a Raging Tauros...
Another new face!
: I'm afraid I can't give her a good game. Perhaps I'll have better luck with you. Would you give an old man a game?
Yeah I'd be happy to.
Oooh, nice stakes. Sure, I'll play you.
...Oh, wow. You sure are a tough cookie. Mhmm. Such a tough opponent.
: Bah, lady luck holds close her grudges. My luck has to turn soon, right?
: Oh, I nearly forgot. Since it's the first time you beat me here, I have to give you this. (blank card) I couldn't figure out what to use it on anyways...
Hey man, I'm sure your luck will turn around if you play against me again!
Unrelated, but I decided to use a Shiny Stone on Togetic to card it for a decent fairy card. Unfortunately, it's just alright.
: If we play for high stakes... Will you go easy on me?
Wow, high stakes? Surely you'll win then, right?
: Oh, thank you! I can feel my luck turning already! I'll even give you my trusty Shuckle if I lose.
...Woah. Uh, well, yeah sure! I'm sure you stand a chance with the best card in the game on the line!
: Excellent. Time to shuffle up my real deck.
...Oh. I'm scared.
I'm scared!
: Silly me, forgetting to play with my real deck. I'll be taking the money now.
: Consider the wager my... tutoring fee.
You... you...
That loss wasn't canon. (sad save reloading noises)
: ...
: All this time, I thought I was the one conning you.
: Let's pretend this never happened.
That's really funny, but also screw you. (The money I savescummed doesn't actually matter in the long run for reasons, but I refused to allow that loss to be canon).
That's everyone in the lobby done now! ...Except Ayaka, the psychic girl struggling with money, who I forgot to fight. Oops.
Here's all the cards I won before the tournament and who I won them from. Definitely a lot of useful ones.
This was the painting suit was standing in front of last time we were here. Not ominous at all. Let's start the tournament!
: Thank you dear child, my 13th player.
: We must have 13, you see, to start a tournament.
: 1 Champion to reign, 12 to compete for the chance to face her. No other reason.
The champion will reign forever???
: Prepare your deck. You won't be able to change it during the tournament. When you're ready, return to me.
That's your cue to get your fights in with all the other opponents and prepare yourself. Thankfully, we already did that.
: Remember, players must use ONE deck to defeat all their opponents. Is your deck ready?
As ready as it'll ever be! Let's do this!
You can enter with less than 10k; the cost only gets deducted at the end of the tournament, so as long as you qualify for a prize you don't need to worry. As for what happens if you lose with less than 10k... I'll cover that in a future update.
: At last... It's a true delight to have you in my little club. Though I never play favorites, I hold you in a certain regard.
: Please, show me wonderful games.
OST - Tournament
The screen flashes, and we're teleported to the arena.
: At least, not until everything ends.
First up is Jaz! Kinda ominous, but that is kind of her schtick.
Our first match goes well! Shuckle somehow gets captured; I guess A can be beaten with type advantages.
: Your power... I see what he sees in you. Why he likes you better...
: A splendid victory. Now... Round 2.
Next up is Jolt!
He kicks our ass.
: Thank you, fatespinner. You honor me with this Victory.
No clue if he's calling us fatespinner, or if he's praising fate itself.
: I'm afraid you have been eliminated. Unfortunately, you must win two rounds to qualify for a prize.
: I'll now collect your entry fee. I hope you have the 10000$ on you. I'd hate to think my trust was abused.
: I should have known better than to doubt. Every $ is here. I'm certain you'll win it all back soon enough.
: Now... close your eyes...
Okay, so that first round was a bust.
Let's try this again!
: That means... you're going down!
First up is Ayaka, the person I forgot to rematch in the lobby.
Here's me realizing she had a Deoxys that I could have snagged had I remembered her.
: I thought this game was my calling... But now, I see you as a wall in my path... One that grows faster than I can climb...
One down, time for the next one!
: Help my dream come true.
Certainly!
Dream achieved! How does it feel?
: If you beat Lara before I do... It doesn't matter! I'll just make YOU my goal instead! Good luck!
Thanks, I'll need it!
: Just one more until the Finals.
Okay, so two more fights left! Heck yeah.
: I've travelled the isle, fought off deadly beasts, and now I duel in the heart of shadow.
: I'm actually living my lifelong dream! Good to get that out of the way at 8, eh?
Sorry, I granted one dream today, so fate ordains I must crush another.
Specifically, yours.
: Cheater cheater cheater cheater cheat--
Rip Charlotte
: Marvelous. Just one opponent remaining. You've already won 23000$. Can you claim the Grand Prize?
I'm gonna try!
OST - Tournament Finale
: That 'merciless ocean' Douglas calls it. It's... exciting.
Time to win this!
Double Shuckle start! Not bad, not bad.
And I've won before she can play her final move. Even if she captures the only thing she can, I'll still have five cards.
Which she doesn't even capture. We win these.
: This feeling... I've forgotten the searing flame of defeat.
: It's been so long since I felt the hunger.
: Thank you child. When next we meet-
: Your droning no longer interests me.
...Um. That doesn't sound good.
Where'd she go?
: From the beginning, I sense greatness in you. Yet you have exceeded my every expectation.
: The prize for three wins is $50000. Though I must deduct your entry fee of $10000.
I... Thanks?
: As tournament champion, you also receive 3 Blank Cards.
: All hail, the new Queen of Games.
The screen flashes white here.
We're back in the lobby, but something's different.
: I'd lost hope of cultivating a worthy opponent. Little Lara was the best I could do.
: But she was limited. The most she could ever be was a whetstone.
: You are the one I've waited for. Please, join me in my Private office.
The lobby... it's empty. There's nobody here.
Well, except for snorlax, and I'm going to buy myself a buttload of berry juice so I'll never run out in the future.
Let's... head in, I guess.
Oh.
