State of the World: 1266

The Nagars rule over a massive empire, the largest in the known world. It is hard to believe that this all started out as a small kingdom on the edge of the Muslim world.

Its ruler, Vistap, is a just, hard-working, kind, and ambitious man. Over a hundred thousand soldiers answer to him and mountains of gold pour into his treasury each month.

To his south are the Lambakanna, an old and distinguished dynasty. They have just recently moved out of Sri Lanka, taking advantage of the chaos caused by the Nagar conquests.

The two realms are closely linked and Dharmasoka is convinced he has nothing to fear from the Nagars.

North of him is the last Nolamba monarch. Half a century ago the Nolambas were a major player in the southern reaches of India. Now they only control Ardha.

Narayanapala is currently in the midst of a war with Shah Vapyata, a vassal of Vistap's. And he's currently losing. Should Vapyata win the war, he will become Vistap's most powerful vassal.

The Ilkhanate has been beaten down by attrition, but with the help of the resurgent Nestorian church, they're slowly getting settled in.

Caliph Ali Ali rules over a greatly weakened Caliphate. Fearful for his life, he hides in the desert wastes, hoping that one day he'll look up and his problems will be gone.

The Fatimids have settled in as rulers of Arabia, though they are currently in the middle of a civil war and fighting off a small expedition by the rulers-in-exile of the kingdom of Jerusalem (which is currently in Spain).

The Hashimids have been driven from Medina, but they've settled comfortably as the rulers of Nubia. They've had a long and bitter with their neighbors...

...the Ziyadids. Once the lowly counts of Taizz, they have since conquered Abyssinia. But right now their kingdom is divided in two. But Sultan Najib is close to reunited the two kingdoms.

The Tulunids are the last bastion of true Islamic power. With the Seljuks effectively destroyed by the Mongols, they increasingly view themselves as the guardians of the faith.

The Umayyad kingdoms of Navarra and Mauritania are at war with each, and soon Navarra shall overcome Mauritania.

Alas, the Umayyads no longer rule Andalusia, instead the Etichonens rule the kingdom.

The union of Mali and France was not meant to be. Gane III, the grandson of the great Gane the Apostle, has been driven out of France.

Aragon is ruled by the Qaysid dynasty. Not much else to say.

Castille is under attack by a French claimant to the rule, a man by the name of Maurice.

Not much to say about Galicia other than it's ruled by a lunatic.

Rome has returned to its true masters. The Byzantines once again walk the streets of the eternal city, though they were at least gracious enough to let the Pope stay in the Lateran palace.

The Italians are still ruled by the Karlings and are a potent force in the continent.

Burgundy exists.

Emperor Antal II of Carpathia rules over Hungary and ... Aquitaine?

The Byzantines are at the mightiest they have been for centuries. And that's saying something. Their empire stretches from Sicily to the Caspian sea. Who knows if they can hold it.

The Bulgarians are being pushed back by the Byzantines, even now.

Great Moravia continues its migration from somewhere in the Germanic regions, to Croatia and now to the Black Sea.

The Bagrationi have been made viceroys of Georgia, continuing their long rule.

The Golden Horde was shattered by its wars with the Ilkhanate. Many of their vassals have broken free and the Horde is now losing ground to the native Turks.

The Rus is still controlled by the Meryavids, as it always has.

Lithuania was shattered by the invasion of the Norwegian king Finn the Usurper, who invaded in the late 12th century. Now the Teutonic Order is pressing into any vulnerable spots it can, rival Romuva are scrabbling for territory, and men from the north are coming in.

The Finns are being driven out of their homelands by the Norwegians, the Teutonic Order, and the Swedes, and many of them have taken up Estonian customs. They found the chaos in Lithuania to be to their advantage, pressing in and taking territory.

Pomerania is in the midst of a massive civil war. Two claimants are fighting for the crowns of the land - one for Pomerania, and one for Poland.

Bavaria is also in the midst of several wars and in line for the throne of Andalusia, barring unfortunate accidents.

The Germans are under attack from the Irish ruled realm of Frisia, which is fighting for the throne of Germany.

The Karlings, alas, ousted the Mande and have put a Karling back on the throne. But this time they've promised not to suddenly turn heretic or whatnot.

The Norwegians conquered Denmark under the leadership of the aforementioned Finn the Usurper. They've now pushed the Finns out of Finland.

And the king of Sweden is insane.

The Isles are their usual mess, with a unified Ireland and a unified Scotland pushing into the English thunderdome.

The De Cantabria would be kings of England had they not been forced apart by Swedish machinations. Too bad for them.

The Norse still reign in their county of Jorvik. They have at multiple points conquered neighboring territory, but they have never been able to hold it.

Ireland is both in a civil war and aiding the Frisians in their conquest of Germany.

And the de St. Andrews continue to rule in Scotland.

Things are looking good for our Pashtun friends. It would take a disaster of unprecedented scale to rip them apart.
