Time for round two! Our victim- I mean our brave fighters today are Grand Gigas the Gallade, Blaze Dragon the Salamence (formerly known as Sillymence), Quackles the Pidgeot, Cambria Bold the Noivern, Fajita Queen the Scolipede, and Carbon Dioxide the Fan Rotom! Half of this team is holding mega stones; it's been months since we got it, but reminder that we can Mega Evolve multiple Pokémon per fight (but only once a turn), and I think it's important to bring some big guns to these fights. The only thing I remember is that the next guy is a lookalike of Bruno and that he used fighting types, so my win plan here is to set up with Mega Gallade and sweep to avoid as much casualties as possible. We'll see how that goes!
: A challenger approaches. Everything is on the line.
: The crowd cheers with only a single chant:
I don't think there's any audience left to appreciate the Champion's glory...
quote:
Pronouncer Brutus. Interesting take on Bruno!
So this Bisharp can either have Inner Focus (blocks Intimidate) or Defiant (raises Attack by 2 when a stat is lowered), and it's random. This is technically my second attempt at the fight; I had a flubbed attempt where I forgot to give the mons nicknames before the fight started and I had to reset on the first turn (which was enough for me to see that Intimidate procced Defiant and put me on edge that Salamence first wasn't a good play, but I still led with the same leads anyways). I think regardless of which ability Bisharp has, the way I played the fight would have given me the same results.
That is to say, oh look this attempt has no "this is a failed attempt" quotation box around it, I wonder what it means?

First things first, I set up a Swords Dance on Gigas, who mega evolves. My plan was to set up and sweep, but plans never really go according to plan.
Tailwind, meanwhile, ensures that my mons will outspeed for the next 4 turns.
Gigas takes a single Iron Head; they can't take another, but eyeballing it they would have survived a +1 Iron Head from Gallade (Inner Focus means they stayed at +0; Defiant means they'd get -1 from Intimidate and then +2 from Defiant which would leave them at +1, aka a 50% attack increase).

Oh come on. Luck is supposed to be on my side! Well now I have to switch Blaze Dragon out; they can't do anything while frozen.
Cool, I'm also up against a Guts Machamp (+50% attack when burned, paralyzed, or poisoned; immune to the damage-halving effect of burn). That's not great.
Switching out Blaze Dragon for Fajita Queen; Fajita has speed boost, so if they live this turn I'm gonna protect both to potentially waste an opponent's turn and also to ensure that speed boost activates.

Gigas takes out Bisharp, but the defense lowering from Close Combat leaves them vulnerable to being finished by Machamp. Not super great that I'm basically down one mon and another might as well be down while Brutus only has one down, but we can make do.

Machamp used Close Combat to finish off Gigas (and thus has lowered defense), so that means that any sufficiently strong attack should one shot them. I send out Quackles to do the job, while Brutus brings out Terrakion.

Quackles mega evolves, finishes off Machamp with Hurricane, and survive a Close Combat from Terrakion. Hell yeah, we're gaining some momentum.

Brutus sends out Darmanitan, and unfortunately, Fajita's earthquake doesn't do as much as I would have liked. In hindsight, I should have Swords Danced with Fajita instead of protecting, but I assumed Terrakion would rock slide or something.

Quackles finishes off Terrakion, while Fajita unfortunately gets taken out by Darmanitan. On the plus side, we're now 2 down (and a third basically down) vs Brutus being half his team down and Darmanitan likely being taken out next turn.
I send out CO2, while Staraptor comes out with intimidate; unfortunately for them both of my mons are special attackers. Tailwind also peters out, so I need to put it back up next turn.

Quackles sets tailwind back up, while Carbon Dioxide finishes off Darmanitan. Two mons left!

...Nevermind, one mon left, but they took Carbon with them. RIP. Final Gambit is a really funny move.
Okay, last mon standing, and... It's a kangaskhan that's 20 levels higher than me.
And it's a mega kangaskhan. Welp!

Cambria's Draco Meteor barely does a quarter of their life, and Hurricane fares about the same. That's not good when that Kangaskhan will delete me in one hit!

Like so. At least they took a small chunk of their own health as recoil?
We're down to my last two mons, and both are at a sliver of a health and one of them can't even move. This is real bad.

Quackles almost finishes them off, but they're still hanging on by a sliver of health. Blaze Dragon, meanwhile, remains frozen.
Quackles is finally taken out by Kangaskhan; despite taking (admittedly less due to Pidgeot's low health) recoil, Kangaskhan is still alive somehow. It must be at like actually 1 HP or something! Just, how.
Whether I win or not is an actual dice roll; either Blaze Dragon unfreezes this turn and finishes off Kangaskhan, or they remain frozen and Kangaskhan takes them out. Uhhh... Hope luck is in my favor?
Hell fucking yes, lets goooooooo!!!!
We win these!
WOOOOOOOOOOO! ... Okay, that's out of my system now.
Also lol get trolled, I put quotes around the fight to fool you into thinking I lost.
Okay, so once again I'm refusing the heal offer cause I find it funny to be rude to the Champion, but there is again no downside to taking this offer, and accepting it ties better into the game's themes.

While healing up Salamence, I learn that you can be wasteful with the soft boileds; it takes the same amount of health from Blissey regardless of how much it heals. Whoops.

Here are our remaining fighters and our casualties. Lots of options to pick from; but unfortunately the next 3 fights have gotten overhauls since I've played so I don't know what to expect from them.
Lastly, there's a lore book to read.
: His mind could overmatch the moon.
Given that there's an actual moon area now, I get the impression this is more literal than it first appears.
: He gifted me the grinning frog. He showed me how to use it.
...Grinning frog? Politoed? Toxicroak? Greninja? What mon could this be referring to?
: Now he playacts battles, roaring to an imagined crowd. ...I regret the need for Circe's hand. She truly earned her name.
Oh. ...That's a bit sad.
Next time, we're gonna beat up some kid from the moon, I think.
