I know you want to challenge me like right now, but I need you to do me a solid and help me infiltrate the Mosswater Factory, unless you want Team Meteor to blow up our gym while we're battling or something.

KABOOM! First we blow up the door to the factory, and now we...

Hey. Sorry about the outburst earlier, Enoby.

Screw you, Fern. You're not obnoxious enough unlike me and my BFF Florina who I call Rini~

What am I? Jabberjaw?

Hello. I'm Fern's sister Florina. Also known as Flobot aside from Julia. I'm also a gym leader. Qualities include using big words instead of little words, if not outright talking like a robot.

Also the author of this LP would like you to know that he's not going to waste time trying to make this version of me speak like my in-game counterpart.

May we assist you two in your operation?

Sure.

It seems like those NPCs were right and this factory is just ejecting waste onto the water. Team Meteor are basically more successful Captain Planet villains. Let's split up. Me and Julia go right and you and Fern go left.

Music: Atmospheric - Flux (Rocket Hideout Remix)
(This music isn't actually played as is. It's played at ~50% pitch for this area, like with the music in the Underground Railnet).

So here's how this area goes. If we try to leave Fern will actually reluctantly let us leave for as long as we want.

The only battles here are all double battles against pairs of Meteor Grunts. They aren't worth talking about. Their dialogue amounts to just the usual team grunt quips with the addition of "Our boss will kick your ass and you will be sorry!".

All of the grunt pairs, including the boss grunts of this factory, all just have 2 Pokemon each.

Note the gears in the background. They have an effect on battles here and in the gym trainers in Julia's gym. Okay, it just boosts electric-type attacks a bit, but it's an effect nonetheless.

Our only main objective here is beat up a dozen grunts and turn off some switchs to progress to the end of this area. You'll have to fight off all the Grunts in this factory before all this is over.

Since there's a buddy with us our Pokemon get fully healed in all aspects after every encounter, so there's not even a threat of having to rush to the Pokemon Center.

Note that there are items in this area.

A problem with raising a Contrary Snivy is that Leaf Storm is learned at minimum Level 43, if we kept it a Snivy. If we actually evolved Dementia it would take even longer to learn it, and I would like to at put it to good use before all's well and done with this game.

After turning off a couple of locks and battling a half dozen pairs of Meteor Grunts, we run into the goddess of kaboom and her robot cohort again.

Hold it. It shouldn't be too hard to hack the security to open the door.

I'm here to kick ass and blow up bombs, and I'm all out of bombs. Since they need bombs to blow up my gym, they should have said bombs behind me, the place that we haven't checked yet.

Especially note this item found in this dead end to the right where Julia and Florina came from. It's an item ball, but you may not notice it because of how obscured it is here.

Also note this item. It's not a fucking Rare Candy, but it's still a hidden item.

Good! Now let's go and...

Door's open. No need to blow it up now.

...Noooooooooooooo...

Music: Sinister Uprising

Sup losers. While you were all chatting away about stupid shit and fighting weak grunts I deleted all of Anony... I mean Team Meteor's private files from here and I got everything packed and ready to move to a new location or something.

But why did you let us in here? The security for that door was surprisingly weak.

Because I wanted to embarrass you all via Pokemon battles! Aster! Eclipse! I'll take care of the gym leaders and you two mess around with the others.

You got it boss!

Umm... Not sure if you're intentially throwing baby pokemon at us as a way of calling us babies or your main grunts really are that pitiful.

Anyway. Fern's team throughout this whole operation is the team he used earlier against Enoby, only in a different order and each Pokmon grinded up a level.

The reason I'm mentioning this now is that this will be the time Fern's pokemon actually starts dying on him due to one of the grunts packing a type advantage.

Should've evolved that Budew, man.

Well that was disappointing. Guess I'm bit outnumbered here. We'll just retreat for now, but remember: We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.

Now that he's gone, I'm gonna set the bombs right here and EVERYBODY HEAD FOR THE HILLS!

Now that Julia blew up the Factory, I'm gonna go fuck off somewhere. Peace!

I'm gonna head off to Obsidia. My plot sensors indicate that something is going to be amiss there. See you later.

I'm going back to my gym. The Voltorbs are set and ready to... I mean everything is ready for your presence. See ya!

Anyway, now that I've doomed myself to having to deal with her later, something new comes to the Grand Hall.

Rebattleable trainers. In earlier versions these appeared after I think winning the third gym battle. Them appearing this early is new to this version.

How rebattleable are they? You battle them and win and then you can challenge them again right away and their Pokemon will somehow be back at full health to be beaten up again for free EXP and money.

If there's one problem I have, it's thay they are shackled to the time system where different trainers are available at different times. At another point there was some trainer boasting about Teenage Mutant Ninja Squirtles (but only has one normal Squirtle, opportunity ruined there).

Music: To Greater Heights (Mystery Dungeon Sky Tower Remix)

It's time.

The 'puzzle' in gym is leading these Voltorb...

...and watching them literally sacrifice themselves to blow up some walls.

What is this, God of War?

Yeah, there's not really any 'puzzle' here. Just a bunch of religious blood(?) sacrifices to the uncaring god of kaboom.

back.

Hell, the gym trainers themselves are mainly complaining about how stupid and bad Julia is.

I do admit, this is kinda neat.

Too bad that banner had to ruin the mood.

Welcome to the Super-Duper Ultra-Hyper Electro-Dazzle Happy Boom-Time House of Cheer!

You actually made it worse?! See, at least Miss "Big Words Robot" used actual big words. You just string in random adjectives in a adjective version of the Human Centipede. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Just ignore all the superlame machinery junk.

So why are you an Electric-type person? Usually machinery deals mainly in electricity, last I've checked.

I need more banners! and streamers! And... hm... Fireworks!!!

No, we need more of this nice animated area without all your added shit.

Wait, is that a safety hazard? Oh, who cares?!

Yes. Your mere existence is a safety hazard on all of Reborn, and that's saying a lot.

Anyway, don't think I'll go easy on you just because you helped us out earlier! I have pride to uphold! As former captain cheerleader, the Onyx Trainers School's honor depends on me!
OTS, we represent! We pack a punch and don't relent! All right, all right, all right! I'm wired so let's fight!

Trust me, when I get done with you...

Why do you look older in that portrait?

Music: Gym Leader Battle (X and Y Legendary Battle Remix)

That's it for this update. The rest of this is describing the madness that is this battle. Okay here we go.

Here's my team I used for the battle:

Dementia and Dark'ness aren't used in the recorded battle

These three Pokemon have an immunity to Electric-type attacks via their Abilities. Notice how I have Pokemon with this kind of immunity and not Ground-types. Well, there are no Ground-type Pokemon that I could obtain (outside of picking Mudkip as my starter and evolving it) between the start of the game and this battle.

Want proof? This is all the Pokemon I could find up to this point.

There's also no Ghost-types on that list, either. I mention this because there's a very bad Normal-type attack that Julia uses that they would've been helpful for.

The rest of my team aren't really that interesting in this battle. They are there to mop up Julia's pair of Voltorbs via damage race and/or act as backup.

You may have noticed that the OTs say Ebony while we're playing as Enoby. I actually did a previous playthrough using Ebony up to here, started another playthrough with the proper name in a different save file, and Used debug to copy everything relevant as well as add all my Pickup shit to the Enoby save, IVs, EVs, Level, Move, everything, making sure to take money out as if I were paying for Pokeballs to pretend I caught a bunch a shit to trade withtraded with myself so that my 'mons get the experience boost.

I think it worked a bit too well, which is why my levels are well over Julia's and why the resulting battle was so one-sided that I believe I made Julia's head mentally implode. Who wants to bet she'll jack off to the notion at night?

In fact, out of these 3 I've only used Raven in the video.

But let's pretend we're going in this completely blind and I didn't have the prior knowledge that this is happening.

Here's a list of trainers can fight prior to the madness that is displayed here.

Most trainers we fought, aside from Fern and at least one of the rebattleable trainers added in this release only have 1 or 2 Pokemon. The exceptions only have 3. Julia has 6.

The game does warn you at least three times prior to this boss fight that all Gym Leaders have 6 Pokemon each. Still, it's such a big spike between the her and everybody else. It would be better off if they cut the amount of trainers up to here by half and double the average # of Pokemon between each of them.

In this battle we're fighing in (normally) permanent Electric Terrain.

Ah, but it's not just your garden-variety Electric Terrain from the more recent games. Reborn does things... differently from the official games.

Here's the Bulbapedia page on Electric Terrain as is in the normal games.

Pokemon Reborn doesn't play by official rulings, though. Its version of Electric Terrain is actually made more complicated and with a bunch more effects than the Electric Terrain in the official games.

If you remember I've deliberately spoiler-tagged out a part of that blabber right after Julia blew up that factory.

Basically, this happened:

Hey, Enoby. Terrain Effects. You know them. Reborn has them. 37 of them in fact. And they are all more needlessly complicated than the Terrain Effects you know. So here's an upgrade to your Pokegear introduced in this version of the game that categorizes all of their bullshit as you find stuff. Here, it's already programmed with information on Julia's precious Electric Terrain-

Waaaaaaaaaa.... Rini you big meanie first you don't let me blow up a door now this why are you siding with the enemy I'll never forgive yoooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.....

This is Pokemon Reborn's version of Electric Terrain:

Here are all the effects for this incarnation of Electric Terrain, with the new effects bolded:

Grounded Pokemon cannot be put to sleep.

Electric-type attacks up 50% when attacker is grounded.

Generated by the move Electric Terrain for up to 5 turns, or Ion Deluge for up to 3 turns if the user doesn't have an Everstone.

The following moves become Electric-type and have their power boosted by x1.5: Explosion, Hurricane, Muddy Water, Selfdestruct, Smack Down, Surf, Thousand Arrows

Focus Punch will always fail.

Charge's Special Defense increase becomes 2 stages rather than 1.

Eerie Impulse is also boosted somehow.

Magnet Rise lasts 8 turns.

The following moves have their power boosted by x2.0: Magnet Bomb

Destroyed by Mud Sport.

Nature Power becomes Thunderbolt.

Camouflage causes the user to become Electric-type.

Secret Power may cause paralysis.

What (unfortunately) isn't important right now is that this incarnation of Electric Terrain can be removed via Mud Sport, which out of all the 'mons we can obtain at this point the only one that can learn it at a reasonable level is Mudkip... by leveling up to 20 before evolving to Marshtomp... yee.

What is important right now for this version of Electric Terrain is that it turns a bunch of moves into Electric-types, including Self-Destruct and Explosion, the latter of which Julia's 2 Voltorbs have.

It also mentions a separate 1.5x multiplier applied to all moves converted to Electric-type, which I wonder if it's because the Pokemon Essentials battle engine won't apply the x1.5 Terrain Bonus to those converted moves otherwise.

If the terrain bonus doesn't apply to such moves, than with Explosion, we're looking at:

250 move base power * 1.5 (STAB) * 1.5 (Extra) = 562.5 base power.

Otherwise, we're looking at:

250 move base power * 1.5 (STAB) * 1.5 (Terrain) * 1.5 (Extra) =

843.75 total base power.

The reason Self-Destruct and Explosion are affected by this version of Electric Terrain is obviously to make the terrain assist Julia's fighting style in every possible way because fuck you. However, this type change is actually worse for her with my strategy, because it means that if they try to suicide bomb someone immune to Electric-type attacks, it would be in vain.

In earlier versions, your only source of info on the Electric Terrain prior to battling her can be found here at the beginning of the gym where Ame talking to you from this thing, giving you less information more abstractly about Julia's terrain bullshit than what Florina gives us in this version.

This gym battle is also the first time we actually encountered Electric Terrain in any form. The other gym trainers here only have the Factory/Gear terrain from the Mosswater Factory. It would be nice if they also have the Electric Terrain as well as more Pokemon between them, so you can get a better idea of what you're up against.

Now that we discussed this abomination of a game mechanic in acceptable detail for this battle, let's move on to Julia's team itself.

I've purposely waited until now to show something from the Profile channel that can be accessed from a TV. I assume its purpose is to cover stuff about the next gym leader you're about to face:

Julia's a bombastic battling babe bursting onto the scene after having graduated from the Onyx Trainers' School. With a history of leading Pokemon and cheerleading teams alike, any challenger is promised an exciting battle against her! Her Electric types fall in right line with this, beating down her competitors with a barrage of her signature "boomies." Sonic Boom and Explosion attacks form the chorus of her routine, so any trainers planning to take her on should be ready to take some hits! Take particular care with her Electrode, whose lightning-fast speed and set damage takes the battle to a crescendo in a blink!

Here's her whole team in its horrible glory:

Helioptile
Level: 12
Held Item: None
Nature: Modest
IVs per stat: 10
Move 1: Charge Beam
Move 2: Glare
Move 3: Mud-Slap
Move 4: Thunder Shock

Voltorb
Level: 12
Held Items: None
Nature: Adamant
IVs per stat: 20
Move 1: Charge Beam
Move 2: Sonic Boom
Move 3: Explosion
Move 4: Rollout

Voltorb
Level: 12
Held Items: None
Nature: Adamant
IVs per stat: 20
Move 1: Charge Beam
Move 2: Sonic Boom
Move 3: Explosion
Move 4: Rollout

Emolga
Level: 13
Held Item: Potion
Nature: Quirky
IVs per stat: 10
Move 1: Charge Beam
Move 2: Nuzzle
Move 3: Acrobatics
Move 4: Quick Attack

Blitzle
Level: 13
Held Item: None
Nature: Hardy
IVs per stat: 10
Move 1: Charge Beam
Move 2: Flame Charge
Move 3: Thunder Wave
Move 4: Quick Attack

Electrode
Level: 15
Held Items: None
Nature: Hardy
IVs per stat: 24
Move 1: Charge Beam
Move 2: Sonic Boom
Move 3: Charge
Move 4: Rollout

All of her 'mons have Charge Beam. Charge Beam has a base power of 50, an accuracy of 90 and has a 70% of boosting the attacker's Special Attack by 1 stage if it connects.

Taking to account Electric STAB and the Terrain bonus, we're looking at 112.5 base power without boosts, which becomes 168.75 after one such boost.

The Electrode and its pre-evolved cohorts all have Rollout as well.

So basically the strategy here is to wreck her shit as fast as possible before she can get her moves powered up and she wrecks your shit.

Remember Volkner from Pokemon Diamond&Pearl? Remember how his team also uses Charge Beam as a signature move? Yeah, we're basically fighting a harder version of an endgame gym battle in the official games as the first gym of this game.

Having an Electric-type Pokemon immune to Electric-type attacks via an ability renders her non-bomb half of the team pretty much impotent. Their MO is paralyzing you then spamming Charge Beam until the cows go moo.

Blitzle learning a Fire-type move seems like some random bullshit type-coverage against Grass-types, but Blitzle actually learns Flame Charge at level 18.

The Blitzle having Flame Charge 5 levels early and the fact her Electrode is half its minimun legal level here indicates that she is in fact, contrary to her earlier statement, not at her best. She must've fed her Pokemon those level-down candies prior to the match, for one reason or another.

Emolga is strange in that it has Acrobatics, a 55 BP move that becomes 110 BP if the attacker has no held item. However, this Emolga has a fucking Potion, which it can't use itself. So unless you steal it, Acrobatics is always 55 BP.

Why? Can't it use something like Aerial Ace? It's only 5 BP higher.

As expected of the Goddess of Explosions, her two Voltorbs both have Explosion. As explained before, in this fight they are pretty much guaranteed to one-shot somebody. By the way, there are no Revives obtainable normally up to this part of the game. So if a Voltorb decides to take your opposing mon down with it, it's unusable for the rest of the battle.

Sonic Boom is also a real bastard of a move. It's a Normal-type move that always deals 20 damage, at the point where your 'mons are lucky to have 40+ unless they're overlevelled and/or evolved.

The only real way to stop it, unlike Charge Beam, is to have a Whismur with Soundproof.

Problem is, you only get one Whismur, which may or may not have Soundproof.

There's also the issue that Julia's bomb half of her team, the ones that have Sonic Boom, also have their other shit mentioned before to ruin your day. If a Voltorb nukes your Whismur with Explosion, well, there goes your only immunity to Sonic Boom.

It's rather telling that as mentioned before, they moved the point to where the rebattleable grind trainers start spawning to just before this boss fight, so if push comes to shove, you can grind everybody to my video's levels and probably brute-force the fight.

Her team may actually be nerfed from whatever original incarnation it was. As said before, her Emolga has the baffling combination of a held Potion and Acrobatics. There's also the fact that her team's highest level is Level 15, whereas the two baby mons used against us at the end of the Mosswater factory were Level 16.

Okay, rant over, update is done, now get out of here, watch that video if you want, and get on with your life. Next update is probably going to be Sunday after next. After all this typing I'm looking into OCR to at least skimp on typing all that game text. Also there may be a special mini-update beforehand
